Ruth Berman's Perfect Book about the Truth about Sharks!!
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.

Ruth Berman has written a fantastic book about the Truth about Sharks! With wonderful photographs and an enormous amount of infromation for a book from that year, "SHARKS" tells children, like me, a 5th grader, about how sharks rarely even attack people and they always have a reason! In fact, sharks are endangered because of humans!! Ruth Berman covers it all! It is my favorite nonfictin book about sharks. I enjoyed every minute, every second, of reading "SHARKS"!! You MUST read "SHARKS"!!!

This is an incredibly fun and informative book. My 4 year old and I enjoyed it immensely! And it made such an impression on him, that he decided to take it to school and give a presentation to his class about sharks! As a pre-school teacher and parent, I highly reccomend it.

Snakes! (Know It Alls) by Christopher Nicholas

Review Date: 2000-10-12
The Know-It-Alls series of books by Christopher Nicholas and Mike Maydak are wonderful tools that we use in our second grade classrooms. They are well written with many useful facts and are on a level that can be easily understood by children. The synopsis at the end of each part of the book is great for helping the students research a particular topic. We have used the snake books, spider books and have now ordered butterflies and bugs. We can't wait to receive them. Thanks!

Did you know that there is shark that glows in the dark? I didn't until I read this very informative books on sharks. Lots of species of sharks are discussed and full color photos of sharks are shown! There is even a chart that shows the various body parts of the shark! Open this book and learn more about the shark!

The book does a great job of reporting interesting shark facts. I learned a lot form the book.

Yes we would. The words are simple enough for a primary student to read, and the illustrations justify the reading.

This book on sharks rocks! Sharks are so damn cool(the only animals cooler are of course little cats, wolves, hyenas, and big cats)and this book has so much to show about their lives! Good God, I mean, the photographs are beautiful and/or cool looking, the many species of shark are given full respect and are shown in both art and photo, lots of amazing information is given on everything from tiger sharks(my favorite shark of all time)great whites, makos, hammerheads, grey sharks, whitetips, blacktips, lemon sharks, blue sharks, whale sharks, basking sharks, megamouths, & all the other species of this cool animal that lives in the ocean. Also, it tells how many people study them. Any shark lover needs to get this RIGHT NOW!

Sharks demystified

Review Date: 2004-08-27
This is a wonderful introduction to sharks for young readers, with good photography. Howard Hall discusses the different types of sharks, how their feeding habits are reflected in their size and shape, how they see, swim, and locate prey. I was surprised to read that they can actually dislocate their jaws and thrust them forward past the end of their noses to bite their prey - and this happens so fast that it can only be seen on film in slow motion. Hall explains why the sharks close their eyes before the attack, that their eyes are so sensitive that they can see in near-darkness, and many other fascinating facts. Although the author uses some advanced terminology such as ovoviviparity, heterocercal tail, Ampullae of Lorenzini, etc, all words are well explained within the text and in a special glossary. It's a book worth having.

Invaluable for Northwest Shell Enthusiasts
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2002-04-08
As a newcomer to the Northwest, I sought a book that would enable me to identify the various seashells I had begun to collect on area beaches. This book is the only complete "non-scientific" field-guide type of text I have found on the subject. In other words, species are referenced by English common names, rather than simply by their more correct, but intimidating Latin names. All species are depicted in color photographs, with corresponding descriptions of habits, habitat, physical features, abundance, etc. Of particular interest are the color photos of the "shows", or siphons, of buried live bivalves.
There is some room for improvement in a future edition. I would like to see more specific information on distribution and abundance, collecting techniques, and on distinguishing species of similar appearance. However, it is the best existing guide to the topic that I yet know of, and it has greatly expanded my knowledge and enjoyment of Northwest shells.

Excellent book for pre-K through 3rd grade ocean life unit.
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2000-10-17
This book contains several projects that thematically integrate ocean life across the curriculum for pre-k through 3rd grade students. The projects help students experience the ocean life they are learning about. This should be a very helpful resource for teachers and student teachers planning a unit or theme on ocean life.
