Learn how sea turtles survive in the wild
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2001-10-18
After laying her many eggs deep in the sand along a Florida beach, a female loggerhead sea turtle returns to the ocean. Thus begins the hatchling turtles' arduous and dangerous journey to survival since only one in a thousand sea turtles live to adulthood. But even before this batch of eggs can hatch, a tropical storm threatens to destroy the entire nest. That's when Buster and his friend Rob help a local wildlife officer save some of the hatchlings -- including two they name Okee and Dokee. In the process, the boys (and the readers) learn everything from how to track the path of a tropical storm to how sea turtles survive in the wild. The latest in the outstanding Frederick Press "Buster's Adventures" series, John Harms' text offers an entertaining and informative blend of fiction and expository writing ideal for young readers ages 7 to 12, and grades two through five. Other highly recommended titles in this superbly presented series include: The Saving Of Arma Armadillo (0965387119, ...); The Saving Of Valiant Blue Heron (0965387178, ...); and The Saving Of Sly Manatee (0965387135, ...).

This book does not have many pages, but all the pages are packed with beautiful, colorful illustrations. It is one of my 15-month old's favorite books. She loves to point out all the animals and use sign language to identify them. Beautiful book!

Sea Horse By Rebecca Stefoff is a very good book to use for research. It has large type and easy words, but it has a lot more info than you think! It also has pictures with two or three word captions. It's a good research book for elementary students.I'm a fourth grader that's researching the Sea Horse, and I have at least five file cards filled with information an the Sea horse, and I haven't even finished it yet!

A Taste of the Biodiversity in the Sea of Cortez

Alex Kerstitch used to drop by the Invertebrate Museum at the University of Arizona when I was assistant curator there. I was always happy to see him and hear about his explorations in the Gulf of California and to accept his specimens, which were always in excellent condition. Alex was the consummate field biologist. I was sad to read in the current 2nd ed. of this book that he had died. We had lost touch over the years and I was unaware of the event, which happened in 2001.

"Sea of Cortez Marine Invertebrates, 2nd ed." was well revised by co-author Hans Bertsch and each page brought back memories of my own travels around the fringes of the Gulf. Indeed, the invertebrate fauna is rich and this book is but a taste of the complex mix of organisms. Most that I have seen are illustrated and the photographs are generally very well done. It is especially nice to see the organisms living, within their own environment, as they should be seen.

This is, of course, not a remotely complete treatment, but it is still well worth the price. It admits the reader to the fascinating world of the sub-tropic sea that is the Gulf of California. Still, the only real way to appreciate it is to see it yourself. In that case this book can serve as an introduction to the creatures you will find from El Golfo de Santa Clara to Cabo San Lucas. I highly recommend it!

I am 13 and in the 8th grade. We had to read a nonfiction book for a science book report and I chose this one! It was very interesting and easy to read. It took me about an hour to read it. I found all the information very useful! SOmething I found useful was the facts about sea otters at the end.....it summarized the basic info from the book which made the report very easy to wrrite! Usually I come to amazon.com to find the book cover so I cna print it out for my posterboard, and was very disappointed that there was not one for this book....other than that i really love amazon.com. I think kids would enjoy this book becasue although it has facts it is not boring! So but the book and read it! I also thought it was very good that they had enviromental issues included in the book!

Beautiful pictures!

This book is a collection of poems about sea animals. It includes a wide range of animals, from the well-known sea otters and beluga whales, to the less familiar sea cucumber and pipefish. Each poem has a corresponding picture, and there is a "looking deeper" section at the end of the book which gives more details about each animal.

The beautiful pictures make this book a must-see. The poems are short enough that they can be enjoyed by those with short attention spans, but they are detailed enough to interest more advanced readers. This book would be best suited for middle school readers because some of the vocabulary is difficult, although younger readers can still enjoy the pictures and the rhyming. The short poems and eye-catching pictures also make it an easy book to pick up and put down over and over. This would be a nice coffee-table type book for a classroom.

This book has information on how to identify a sea turtle, how they nest, where to see them nest, and how to help save the sea turtles. I learned a lot from this book, so I advise you to get it. I'm only 11, so it's hard for me to write more complcated than this, but the book was wonderful!!!
