Great product for kids that wish to learn to draw without expensive art lessons. My daughter, age 9 has several books and is creating a wonderful folder of art and bonus I can even draw and my talents are very limited.

Through the use of basic shapes like circles, ovals and triangles, children can learn to draw a variety of creatures from the sea. You can start with easy sea shells and move on to the more complex shrimp and octopus.

The Clown fish begins with a simple oval and the instructions take you through a instructional and visual journey. All the steps are sketched out making the drawings super fun and easy to copy. A pencil, eraser and colored pencils are all you need. You could also paint the final drawings.

The pictures include a cute Sea Horse, Sea Turtles, Crab, Shrimp, Coral Reef Fish, Dolphins, Whales, Anemones and many more...

1-2-3 Draw books are perfect for new artists learning about the basics of drawing and this book will provide hours of fun activities. Once you learn how to draw the sea creatures, you can then put them all in one picture with a coral reef.

Having been introduced to the 1-2-3 books at our local library, I was excited to see the ocean life being released as the aquarium is one of our children's favorite places to visit. They love to draw the different types of sea creatures and the way that the illustrations are broken down, even very young children can create a fish that resembles the actual creature. I love all the 1-2-3 books and we use them regularly.

This is a great book for kids who aren't able to read yet. Having pictures of the objects to find at the bottom of each page is just great. My 4 year old gets very frustrated with the I Spy books, because he isn't able to read the lists of objects to find. With these books he doesn't need to read and feels like a Big Kid because he can work on the book all by himself!

Good book to grow with!

This is our 3 year old's favorite book. We read it cover to cover every night before bed. He loves to find all of the sea creatures and the ecotourist Billy on every page. As he gets older, there are other skills to explore, such as finding ALL of the polar bears, etc. on each page (right now we just find one of each specimen). Can't recommend this highly enough! It's fun for everyone.

This book contains some of the best material to stimulate young minds. It will challenge their sight and memory as they look over these excellent illustrations in search of the objects in the list. While their scanners are active, the children will also learn a bit of the science of the sea, as they are required to identify objects found in and hear the oceans of the world.
The images are:

*) Open sea - a selection of what can be seen some distance away from land
*) Water sports - what you can see on a recreational ocean beach
*) Icy north - the creatures that can be found on the ice pack of the north
*) Coral reef - a sample of the creatures that can be found on the coral reefs
*) By the seashore - what you can see on a sand beach
*) Underwater forest - a sampling of what can be found in the shallow water near the land
*) On a cruise - a demonstration of some of the activity that takes place on a cruise ship
*) Deep down - a sampling of the creatures found in the deepest of ocean waters
*) Sea village - a demonstration of the activity that take place in a village on stilts at the edge of the ocean
*) Lost city - the activity associated with an underwater archeological site
*) Chilly south - a sample of the wildlife found in the area around Antarctica
*) Grassy seabed - a sample of the very shallow seawater ecosystem
*) Shipwreck - an example of divers exploring a ship at the bottom of the ocean

Brief answers are included at the end, although they probably will not be of any assistance.

In "Adventures with Sharks" underwater photographer Jonathan Bird manages to combine spectactular photographs with exciting tales of his personal shark encounters. Somehow, he also slips in lots of details on shark biology, so that the reader comes away with a far greater understanding of these magnificant creatures. I'm anxiously awaiting his next book!

One very kewl book!!!

I received my copy of Jonathan Bird's Adventures With Sharks right before a planned visit to my brother and his family. I took the book along thinking that maybe my 9-year-old nephew might take an interest. I don't get to see him very often but I know that his world revolves around dinosaurs, B-B guns, and Pokemon. Being my only nephew, I've held the hope that someday he'd learn to scuba diving and be a dive buddy. Sitting down near him with the book while he was watching a cartoon, he quickly noticed the photo on the cover. "That's a Great White shark, isn't it?" he asked. "Sure is" I answered, "what do you know about them" I asked as he moved over and sat next to me. We began thumbing through the pictures and he was hooked. I asked him if he wanted to read a story with me and told him he could choose which one. He flipped to the back cover photo of the ragged toothed Sand Tiger shark and said he wanted to read about that one. I read to him the story about the author's adventure with the Sand Tigers of North Carolina and stopping from time to time to discuss some of the science, biology, and behavior. At the end of the story, he asked if I had ever dove with Sand Tiger sharks, and I told him no but that maybe someday he and I could make a road trip to North Carolina and dive with them together. It's hard to imagine anything making me a cooler uncle than Mr. Bird's book had at that moment.

I can't recommend it highly enough!!

"Adventures with Sharks" is both entertaining and informative, and I highly recommend it to anyone with an interest in sharks or the undersea world in general. Sharks have simultaneously frightened and fascinated humans for years, but the author, Jonathan Bird, carefully explains how these marine predators, honed by millions of years of evolution, are largely misunderstood by people. Bird has traveled the world to dive with a variety of shark species and presents his exciting experiences in an easy-to-read style accompanied by many stunning pictures. The photographs are outstanding - well composed and clearly chosen to illustrate the beauty and behavior of these remarkable animals.

Each chapter is a story about Bird's experiences diving with a particular species of shark, from the sleek and graceful Blue Shark, to the mammoth yet harmless Whale Shark, to the infamous Great White, and many others. There are lots of great facts and details about what science knows, and has yet to learn, about these incredible creatures. I came away from the book with a new appreciation for sharks - in particular their diversity and the adaptations they have evolved to survive in a wide variety of environments and conditions. I also learned about the vulnerability of many shark species to over-fishing and other human practices that threaten their very survival. If you like sharks, want to learn more about them, or just enjoy a good adventure story, then this book is for you!

Have you ever wondered about sharks? Did you know that there are more that 250 species of sharks? Did you know sharks don't have bones? This book will teach you these facts and lots more. It even includes some shark safety tips.

All About Sharks is a very informative book. This book will help children understand these creatures of the deep better. I enjoyed looking all the pictures the book had of all types of sharks.

We recommend this book to children ages 5-8. Kids are curious about sea life and this is great book for them to read to learn more about sharks. The book would be a great reas aloud to science classes as well.

This book is an epiphany. Kittredge is the best essayist writing about the American west living today, and the photographs are almost perfect. This book will introduce readers to an area that has remained mostly obscure, an area where huge environmental dramas have long since began, and are still being played out. Many sympathies are presented in this book; lots of heros, too. An amazing read.

Camera and Pen Weave a Story for Stewardship

Five stars... without a doubt! Blake, Blake, and Kitteridge craft a compelling case for stewardship of the ecosystems we inhabit. The story is grounded in the Klamath Basin of Southern Oregon where a complex dance of men and nature is being played out. Historically, the federal government in the form of the Bureau of Reclamation identified the water rich basin as a region to promote for farming. No surprise that today the area is largely given over to farming and ranching. Prior communities consisted of local Native Americans who for the last hundred years or so have been driven out of the basin either by our military or our legal system. And last, but not the least in importance, the bio-diversity that suffers at the hands of lost habit, chemicals used for pesticides, and misguided management by public institutions.

Farmers, the indigenous Klamath people, migrating birds and native fish, all have their claims to the basin. From recalling the basin from his early childhood to driving the dirt roads to meet the 3rd generation farmers and ranchers, William Kitteridge's writing is exceptional at putting real faces and names to this place.

The story is made sublime with some of the most outstanding western wildlife photography you are likely to find. The photographs represent the sacredness of a place that serves as a stop for millions of migrating birds that no words can begin to portray.

A tragic postscript to the publishing of this book was a fish kill of some 30 thousand salmon on their way up the Klamath River to their spawning beds. Its been concluded that in stream flows got drawn down to the point where the migrating salmon stacked up in swallow and warm pools which ultimately depleted the water of oxygen. Only recently have federal wildlife managers admitted that diversion of water to farmers in the basin caused the massive fish kill in the Klamath.

Excellent narrative that provides the historic context for what is emerging as one of the most difficult and contentious fights between economic and enviromental interests anywhere in the US. The photography is outstanding and Kittredge's discussion of the people and the issues in this beautiful area provide concise insight for anyone interested in understanding the tragedy of US government policies on the management of the land, the people, the fish, and the birds of the Klamath Lake basin. Strongly recommend!!!

This book touched me so deeply. The stories are powerful and incredibly moving. It's a must read for anyone who calls themselves an animal lover. I have a new found respect and insight for the dolphins, as well as, the people who put themselves at great risk to save them. I, like many others, merely think about helping these wonderful creatures... thank God there are actually people out there that walk the talk and are making a difference for the lives of these amazing and beautiful beings. This book has lifted my spirits and inspired me in way that no other book has done before. Bravo!

This book was amazing. It was an elegant yet honest exploration of swimming with dolphins and dolphins in general. It was like taking an outdoor class with some of the world's best and most varied dolphin experts around the world. Nowhere else can I learn about dolphins in original pieces by Jean Michel Cousteau, Marc Bekoff, Sy Montgomery, Kathleen Dudzinski, Diane Ackerman, John Lilly, Paul Spong, and other stellar dolphin pioneers. I'm a marine biologist and yet I learned things about dolphins and interspecies communication that I never have learned anywhere else. It opened my eyes to new things about dolphins and people ... how dolphins save human lives, how people save dolphins, and how people can even unintentionally hurt dolphins because they want to be so close to them. I drank this book up, and when I see dolphins now, I relate to them so much more. The only downfall was that the book had some sad notes, but that is how the real life of a dolphin is. Overall I thought it was incredibly inspiring and I felt like I'd been swimming with dolphins for years after reading it!

Finally, a book that looks at dolphins and people from a scientific perspective and not just the standard New Age hype. It was exciting to read essays by the leading experts in this field - some of the world's leading nature writers and dolphin biologist together. The writers aren't afraid to take an honest look at how we influence dolphins, which may be surprising for those who frequent Sea World waiting for a free ride from a dolphin. Instead, look forward to a seminal collection about how far (or little) we've come since John Lilly first spoke about human dolphin communication 25 years ago.

One look at researcher Paul Thompson's book and it's easy to see why bottlenose dolphins continue to be the world's favorite aquarium animal. Thompson's incredible knowledge coupled with lively photographs of bottlenose dolphins effortlessly flying from the ocean in unison and weaving in the depths of the azure sea make for a treasured book. He explores the world of these fascinating creatures from physical to sociological structures. Thompson writes of the dolphin family structure; feeding habits; and relationships with humans and whales, dolphins and porpoises.

Unlike so many other books about dolphins this book focuses only on the bottlenose dolphin. It gives the reader a basic idea of the life of this species and includes a lot of interesting facts about them. The authors are not writing down second hand info but are both researching these dolphins off the coast of Scottland. Instead of having school book like anatomical drawings and graphs this book remids me more like talking to a dolphin expert while going on a boat watching them in the sea.

I saw this book at a friend and liked the photos so much that I knew I needed it for my collection, too. Being a wildlife photographer (with a special focus on dolphins) I always enjoy looking at as good photos of dolphins as found in this book. This book makes an excelent gift for any dolphin fan.

Includes gentle info about how manatees get hurt by boats, and how few there are left in the world. Beautifully illustrated, and received a Parent's Award. "Chessie" is for the Chesapeake Bay, which he entered on this first trip. Five stars because my son loved it so.

My Uncle was a just person who valued everyone. In a time when mostly guys were honored, he took me duck hunting. My brothers watched as I waited with my Uncle. We watched the ducks come in. My feet were freezing and he warmed them in his coat.We never did get a duck, but I have never felt so valued. I think I am the only one in my family to fly with Uncle Pat. He showed me how to do dive bombs on clouds. My brother Bob served in Desert Storm...He also died...There are precious people that we love..they show us what honor is about.

Lt. Gen. Frank E. Petersen, the author of "Into the Tiger's Jaw", said Flynn taught you "how to rise above all the racism" without being "confrontational toward the Marine Corps . . . You had to follow him. Everybody respected him. Everybody loved him. I have never met another man with the sincerity, conviction, and strength of [Flynn]. Chief was a legend."

I personally know author Sean J. Flynn and was the first in line to pick up this book at his book signing in Mitchell, SD, where Professor Flynn is an assistant professor of History at Dakota Wesleyan University. In "Cheif - Marine Corps Warrior", Flynn follows the military life of his father, John P. "Pat" Flynn (also known as "Chief"), a direct descendent of Chief Spotted Tail, the uncle to Crazy Horse.

Pat Flynn's military career began as a Corsair pilot in the Pacific during World War II as well as a Corsair pilot during the Korean War, where he was shot down and taken captive for nearly two years.

Flynn's determination and Faith sustained him during his time in the hands of Chinese Communists where he was placed under enormous physical and psychological strain, which is greatly described by Sean Flynn.

This book is a tribute to one of the greatest heroes of South Dakota and the United States. If I could've given this book more than five stars, I would have.

This is a damn good book about a damn good American.

This is a book which is accurate in its drawings, with the official names for many, if not all, the different species. I am an adult, a frustrated artist with no talent whatsoever for drawing. I have really enjoyed coloring these pictures with colored pencils. There is a lot of small detail work in some of the pictures, which I think would be difficult with crayons, but of course, all the detail doesn't need to be observed. I have loved this book and have colored 2/3 of the pictures. It is my favorite of the half dozen coloring books I bought. There are completed colored pictures of about a quarter of the drawings, which I appreciate very much, as it gives inspiration to those of us who would like to experiment with shading, etc.

Adults and kids who enjoy art and/or nature will find the books in this series enjoyable. You can simply enjoy putting colors together to create your own world of creatures or flowers (depending upon which book you order) or you can do the research and create a realistic world of color and beauty complete with learning the different names for the fish and under water foliage or the flowers or the butterflies etc in other books. Whether used as a learning tool or just for creative expression adults and children alike enjoy these books. I keep a selection of these types of coloring books around around the house with a very large selection of gel pens and markers for my neices and nephews and they come over frequently to visit while we all sit down to color, nothing else, Though I wouldn't sit to color a regular coloring book, these and the geometric or mandrel design coloring books are more on an adult level and I enjoy sitting with them as we chat about what is happening in their lives as we color. I believe they open up more because the coloring alows them to avoid the intensity of one-on-one coversations about emotional things in their lives. Open a door, sit and color with your pre-teen or teen and just be available to talk. You may be surprised at what doors you are opening, beyond the creativity of a child and yourself.
