It's hard to believe that something as arcane as flyfishing history can be fun, but this little book shows you a good time. From ancient history to nearly the present, Law carries the reader from milestone to milestone with humor and effortless prose. His engaging style and command of the subject are a pleasure to find amidst a sea of mediocrity and hyperbole on the subject.

Good light reading. Witty and irreverent. Written with a light touch. I chuckled from beginning to end. I can not wait to see the next book by this author

If you are like me, then you always want to cook up some seafood but aren't sure what type to buy or if the shellfish is fresh. This book covers all aspects of fish and Shellfish, from how to clean it to how to eat it. It describes all most every type of fish you can imagine and several ways to cook them up. It is truley and ENCYCLOPEDIA!

Learn to cook fish fabulously!
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 9 total.

This is one of the best cookbooks I've ever come across (I have the British version.) Even fairly competent cooks are intimidated by fish. Apart from grilling them with a bit of lemon and parsley, what do you DO with these complex creatures? The first half of the book is a biology lesson - a listing of every fish and shellfish you can think of, a simple description of what it is, where it lives, what it tastes like and the best generalized ways of cooking it. Then there's a second half of recipes. These range from fairly simple to fiendishly but rewardingly time-consuming. I must have tried at least fifteen and all but one (octopus stew) has been absolutely sensational! The green curry, and the Moroccan tagine are real dinner-party conversation stoppers. I wouldn't usually take the time to write an amazon.com review, but I enjoy using this book so much I wanted to tell everyone how good it is.

I've been a fan of SmokeeJo's for a long time. I love his segments on Napa's "North to Alaska." His recipes are not only delicious, but easy to understand and usually fairly simple to make. SmokeeJo ROCKS!

I am a culinary student, and was given this by a friend- what a wonderful resourse! (be advised I did find one or two editing quirks). I really enjoyed the 'overview' of the resturants, recipes, suggested menues and layout. Very Wonderful cookbook (tho the Montery is the weakest of the series). I got an 'A' using the Cajun recipes from this for a final project!

My favorite cookbook

I have a lot of cookbooks, but this is the one I turn to time and again when I want something tasty and spectacular. Pamela McKinstry invented the Morning Glory muffin, and that is just one of the many delicious recipes you will find here. Her recipes are easy to follow, and simple to adjust. A great gift for any true "foodie" who likes to cook.

Wow cool fish!!!

Review Date: 2005-12-02
This book is about the diversity of fish in the tropics, from tiny gobies which can be just 1cm, to massive manta rays with a fin span of 6 metres! Linda Pitkin is an award winning underwater photographer, and also is a biologist interested in marine life. The book includes over 100 of her award winning and spectacular photographs.

Highlights:
- I particularly like the section about light organs on page 94, about Flashlightfishes that emit light to see and divers have said that the light appear to eerily float in mid-water.
- I also really like the section on false eyes in "How do they protect themselves" on page 28.

Critique:
- I think that the photography in the book, taken by Linda Pitkin is really amazing.
- I like the blue boxes of interesting information in the book.
- The information is easy to understand and concise in each topic, not too technical
- The book could have been longer! This is my only criticism!

I would definitely recommend this book. It is really interesting and I have learnt a lot about coral fish from it!!! The pages are bright with clear, easy to understand text. The photography is amazing as well!!!
I would rate this book ***** because it is really amazing!

Best Red Sea marine life guide ever
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.

Simply put, this is the best guide to the marine life of the Red Sea available today. Great images, reliable identification, clear and interesting texts, enormous scope, handy size, reasonable price - what more could one ask? Divers and u/w photographers planning to visit this specific area cannot do without it - one of its authors, Robert Myers, has also produced another landmark in area-specific marine life guidebooks, the incredibly complete Micronesian Reef Fishes.
