I bought this book before making the big mistake of blindly plumetting into marine aquriums. It openes my eyes before hand to what ws in store. I truly got a head start of the game with this precise, simple great eexplaining fun to read book.

THIS SHOULD BE YOUR FIRST BOOK

No doubt about it, if you need to buy one book to get aquainted with the hobby, this book is the one.

Being a librarian and new to the hobby, I have purchased about 12 books on marine aquariums now, some very good, but this is definitely the one to start with.

Information is current and presented effectively. It's filled with actual aquarium photos, unlike some great books that rely heavily on pictures from the ocean.

One complaint, and this was probably an editing ploy to sell more books, Kurtz claims you do not need to be proficient in fresh water aquariums in order to try marine. I HIGHLY DISAGREE WITH THAT, because you can learn a lot of lessons MUCH cheaper with freshwater fish than having to learn to manage water changes, overfeeding, medicating, and algae blooms with your salt-water friends.

Another complaint, my copy had poor binding and fell apart quickly.

Great for Beginners...but a bit confusing

I really have to give this book 5 stars - it is the first book I read on marine aquariums and it is the source that I bounce all new info off of. This book gives a great introduction to both fish-only and mini-reef aquariums. But that is also it's problem.

It took me a long time to untangle exactly what information in this book pertained to which set-up. The emphasis of the book is on mini-reefs (and I have since started a simple 55-gallon mini-reef, as well as a 29-gallon fish-only tank), but the best set-up for a beginner would undoubtedly be a fish-only or fish with hardy invertebrates set-up. And this book does cover these issues, but it all seems to get mixed-up with the full-blown mini-reef (which requires higher, and more expensive - way more expensive - lighting, filtration, and livestock). The sections on fish selection are informative, but incomplete (like exactly what should you feed each fish?).

All in all - no book is perfect, and this is a great place to start. For a briefer, but clearer, discussion of the types of set-ups, I would suggest that you consult The Conscientious Marine Aquarist. It covers the basic differences between each set-up in a much clearer fashion.

All in all, a fish-only saltwater aquarium is nowhere near as difficult as most people believe, especially if you have experience with maintaining water quality in a freshwater aquarium, and if you carefully choose your fish. This book will help you do both - but keep on reading when you're done - the more you know about this subject, the better. Especially for your fishies!

This is an extraordinary book I spotted in a local bookstore.
Immediately I knew that I had to get "Sleeping Giant: An
Illustrated History of Southern California's Inland Empire"
for my son-in-law's Christmas.
The format is inviting, table-top size, and the vintage photographs have been selected with care.
The book was placed in a sturdy white custom-sized box by the
publisher.
Great book! Would recommend to anyone interested in the early
history of Southern California.

As an author and historian of the book "Southern California Miscellany", I live in the Inland Empire of So-Cal and I appreciate this wonderful book for leaving no stone unturned in conveying a thoughtful and entertaining account of the Inland Empire.

Definitely a beautiful book!

Rob Leicester Wagner has put together a magnificent book, containing a good narrative and delightful photographs, about one of the fastest-growing areas in the country which still maintains a sense of character and place, unlike many locations in southern California which have grown and changed through the years. There is still to this day a sense of openness and freedom in the Inland Empire, compared to the more densely populated areas along the coast. And the more moderate housing costs continue to attract residents who are willing to brave commutes to jobs in Los Angeles, Orange and Riverside counties.

I just read "Solomon Starbucks Striper." What a pleasure!
Author Rowan has Orwellian talents. I've fished for
everything from sunnies to sailfish but never before
conceived of a fish with wisdom. In fact, this striper
shows dazzling intelligence as he probes the secret
depths of the Atlantic. From beginning to end this
charming book is a winner!

You can't swim your way to a better world

If the laws of nature tell us to find food, to avoid being food, and to multiply, then Solomon Starbuck Striper adds that to be truly human one must follow their heart, learn to trust and forgive, rid yourself of inhibiting assumptions, and visualize how you want to be.

Author Roy Rowan has written a delightful tale about the life experiences of a young striper fish, named Solomon, who grows up being discriminated against because of his coffee colored strips. On his journey to find "the place where the sky meets the sea," Solomon discovers a world of fresh ideas and unlimited opportunities. He confronts his competitors, and discovers that life is about more than mere survival. "You can't swim your way into a better world, I'm afraid," says a giant octopus in the book. "Only an altered state of mind will lead you there."

Rowan, who has traveled the world for Time and Life Magazines, learned thru personal interviews many of the philosophies of some of the most powerful figures of the 20th Century. Rowan relates this fish story to some of life's great lessons. His earlier book, Surfcaster's Quest, lures the reader into the experiences of a fisherman casting temptations to nearby fish. Both of these books are wonderful tales of how the struggle between man and fish is ultimately about survival. Even so, life is filled pains, worries, great ideas and personal ambitions. The ending will surprise you.

Roy Rowan's delightful fable about a charming, philosophical denizen of the deep, "Solomon Starbucks Striper," will entrance old salts, fishermen and landlubbers alike. As an unabashed Rowan fan, I especially enjoyed this first sortie by him into the realm of fiction. Drawing on his vast experience observing and writing about the world and its people in his books and for Time, Life and Fortune, he has constructed a marvelous fable that is much more than a fish story.

Most of what is found in this book is in False Prophet and Islam in the End Times. But there are still little nuggets here and there that are worth reading. I just skipped over the other stuff I already knew. All in all, I would say this is a book worth having. You can never have enough [spiritual] ammunition.

"He who testivies to these things says, 'Yes, I am coming quickly.'" Revelation 22:20

Verses like this in the Bible have plagued me with doubt as long as I can remember. How could the Lord be coming quickly if these words were written 1900 years ago? Throughout the last two millenniums, Christians have always believed the Second Coming was at hand. Doesn't this seem to take away from the validity of the Bible? I struggled with this problem until I read this book.

SOZO by Ellis Skolfield is a must-read to any Bible scholar, skeptic, or student. It is intense reading filled with historical facts backed up by prophetic scripture. From the Islamic mosque, the Dome of the Rock, sitting high on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, to the uncanny victory of Israel in the Six-Day War, this book does what no other book on the market does: its shows us how Bible prophecy is real.

With Splish Splash Sarah Weeks has written a charming story that beginner readers will want to read over and over again. Ashley Wolff's illustrations are a delight. The colorful animal characters capture the eyes and imaginations of young readers and pre-readers. My six ear old enjoys reading the story while my 3 year old enjoys looking at the picutures again and again.

Slpish Splash is a wonderful beginner reading book. Chub the fish enjoys sitting in his tub and when ten of his friends want to come in chub says "jump in if you wish". But can a tub so small hold them all? The story is fun for beginner readers and Ashley Wolff's illustrations add colorful and playful fun that beginner readers and non-readers will enjoy looking at time and again. My five year old enjoys reading it and my 2 and a half year old just likes to hear the story and look at the pictures! A fun, beautiful book!

Took a chance and we are very happy with the book as are the kids in the family. It is obvious that Barbara Hughes, the author, has a good background caring for children. The illustrations are very friendly and we are ready for another ! Thank you for giving us an alternative. Thank you for a book we can trust to send the right message. Can we have another one before Christmas ?

I purchased Starbortz for my 4 year old grandaughter. The story is about a starfish who is sad because nobody thinks he is important engouh. My grandaughter is very shy and hestiates to speak up. She grinned from ear to ear when Starbortz found his special gift that matterd.

Children go through critical years afraid to speak up , ultimately impacting their adolescene years where self esteem is so important. This book teaches that everyone has a special gift along with the hidden message that everyone should be careful when critisizing too quickly. The illustrations were wonderful and truly brought out the feelings of the little starfish. We love the book.

Starboortz Fish is a cute, well-illustrated story about finding and using your special skills to become happy and successful. Isn't that what we want for our children. My school kids love the book and Starboortz Fish is their new hero.

I bought Starboortz Fish after hearing talk show host Neal Boortz discuss it on his radio program. Starboortz Fish was referred to as the answer to Rainbow Fish which is a book in direct opposition to what I believe our children should be taught. Mr. Boortz devoted a full chapter in his book "Somebody's Gotta Say It" to the - anti-individual, anti-success, anti-personal property rights - story told in Rainbow Fish. Rainbow Fish sends a terrible message to our youth.

I hope that others will start reading Starboortz Fish. We need children to learn that... 1. They are special, unique individuals; 2. Using their talents to provide a needed product or service leads to success; 3. Success is a good thing. Job well done Ms. Hughes and Ms. Clark!

ABOUT BLADY is a touching book about life and death. It inspired this poem which I hope will suffice as a reveiw.

HE DIED OF CANCER HE WAS 68 HE DIED OF CANCER HE WAS 36 HE DIED OF CANCER HE WAS 24

LATTER RAINS come sparking on a comet's tail out of control

strike a silent blow to grow in him out of sight coming in visionary midnight dreams

frightening misunderstood meaning clear in afterthought

after ravaged body nears end of capability felt end of being

Pain no pills can erase subdued by chords of Beethoven passages of Mozart

Sunshine overshadowed by death clouds a peaceful finale echoes through stainglass windows to silence

Laurens van der Post gives us glimpses into various parts of his life, and finally bears down on the subject of the title of this book, a mare called Blady, spotted in a field by a young horsewoman of Argentine origins in Spain, purchased on the spot, and trained and ridden by her against against the greatest rider in all of Spain. Van der Post writes the story with great affection for the for the young woman and her mare. Many insights are given into the complex interrealtions and customs of the Spanish, none more interesting than Laurens' reflections on the meaning and symbolism of the bullfight.

As a young kindergarten teacher, I looked forward to our lessons each year on the life cycle of frogs. Reading Tim Tadpole and the Great Bullfrog to my students was always a fun experience, as the children identified so closely with the growth and change that Tim was experiencing. The triumph of the ending, when Tim emerges from the water using his strong new legs, was thrilling for the children. The copy I used from our school library in the early 80's was already quite old. I've scoured used book sales and thrift shops in vain, hoping to find a copy for my self. Maybe one day this book could be reprinted, perhaps with colorful new illustrations to appeal to today's 4-6 year olds. I would be first in line to buy it!
