best for beginnersReview Date: 2004-05-13
THIS SHOULD BE YOUR FIRST BOOKReview Date: 2006-07-11
Being a librarian and new to the hobby, I have purchased about 12 books on marine aquariums now, some very good, but this is definitely the one to start with.
Information is current and presented effectively. It's filled with actual aquarium photos, unlike some great books that rely heavily on pictures from the ocean.
One complaint, and this was probably an editing ploy to sell more books, Kurtz claims you do not need to be proficient in fresh water aquariums in order to try marine. I HIGHLY DISAGREE WITH THAT, because you can learn a lot of lessons MUCH cheaper with freshwater fish than having to learn to manage water changes, overfeeding, medicating, and algae blooms with your salt-water friends.
Another complaint, my copy had poor binding and fell apart quickly.
Great for Beginners...but a bit confusingReview Date: 2004-06-09
It took me a long time to untangle exactly what information in this book pertained to which set-up. The emphasis of the book is on mini-reefs (and I have since started a simple 55-gallon mini-reef, as well as a 29-gallon fish-only tank), but the best set-up for a beginner would undoubtedly be a fish-only or fish with hardy invertebrates set-up. And this book does cover these issues, but it all seems to get mixed-up with the full-blown mini-reef (which requires higher, and more expensive - way more expensive - lighting, filtration, and livestock). The sections on fish selection are informative, but incomplete (like exactly what should you feed each fish?).
All in all - no book is perfect, and this is a great place to start. For a briefer, but clearer, discussion of the types of set-ups, I would suggest that you consult The Conscientious Marine Aquarist. It covers the basic differences between each set-up in a much clearer fashion.
All in all, a fish-only saltwater aquarium is nowhere near as difficult as most people believe, especially if you have experience with maintaining water quality in a freshwater aquarium, and if you carefully choose your fish. This book will help you do both - but keep on reading when you're done - the more you know about this subject, the better. Especially for your fishies!

Southern California HistoryReview Date: 2007-01-08
Immediately I knew that I had to get "Sleeping Giant: An
Illustrated History of Southern California's Inland Empire"
for my son-in-law's Christmas.
The format is inviting, table-top size, and the vintage photographs have been selected with care.
The book was placed in a sturdy white custom-sized box by the
publisher.
Great book! Would recommend to anyone interested in the early
history of Southern California.

A Striper with Dazzling IntelligenceReview Date: 2004-04-29
Author Rowan has Orwellian talents. I've fished for
everything from sunnies to sailfish but never before
conceived of a fish with wisdom. In fact, this striper
shows dazzling intelligence as he probes the secret
depths of the Atlantic. From beginning to end this
charming book is a winner!

You can't swim your way to a better worldReview Date: 2004-04-23
Author Roy Rowan has written a delightful tale about the life experiences of a young striper fish, named Solomon, who grows up being discriminated against because of his coffee colored strips. On his journey to find "the place where the sky meets the sea," Solomon discovers a world of fresh ideas and unlimited opportunities. He confronts his competitors, and discovers that life is about more than mere survival. "You can't swim your way into a better world, I'm afraid," says a giant octopus in the book. "Only an altered state of mind will lead you there."
Rowan, who has traveled the world for Time and Life Magazines, learned thru personal interviews many of the philosophies of some of the most powerful figures of the 20th Century. Rowan relates this fish story to some of life's great lessons. His earlier book, Surfcaster's Quest, lures the reader into the experiences of a fisherman casting temptations to nearby fish. Both of these books are wonderful tales of how the struggle between man and fish is ultimately about survival. Even so, life is filled pains, worries, great ideas and personal ambitions. The ending will surprise you.

Eye Opening TruthReview Date: 2000-09-30
Verses like this in the Bible have plagued me with doubt as long as I can remember. How could the Lord be coming quickly if these words were written 1900 years ago? Throughout the last two millenniums, Christians have always believed the Second Coming was at hand. Doesn't this seem to take away from the validity of the Bible? I struggled with this problem until I read this book.
SOZO by Ellis Skolfield is a must-read to any Bible scholar, skeptic, or student. It is intense reading filled with historical facts backed up by prophetic scripture. From the Islamic mosque, the Dome of the Rock, sitting high on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, to the uncanny victory of Israel in the Six-Day War, this book does what no other book on the market does: its shows us how Bible prophecy is real.

Children go through critical years afraid to speak up , ultimately impacting their adolescene years where self esteem is so important. This book teaches that everyone has a special gift along with the hidden message that everyone should be careful when critisizing too quickly. The illustrations were wonderful and truly brought out the feelings of the little starfish. We love the book.
Great story for childrenReview Date: 2008-02-13
I bought Starboortz Fish after hearing talk show host Neal Boortz discuss it on his radio program. Starboortz Fish was referred to as the answer to Rainbow Fish which is a book in direct opposition to what I believe our children should be taught. Mr. Boortz devoted a full chapter in his book "Somebody's Gotta Say It" to the - anti-individual, anti-success, anti-personal property rights - story told in Rainbow Fish. Rainbow Fish sends a terrible message to our youth.
I hope that others will start reading Starboortz Fish. We need children to learn that... 1. They are special, unique individuals; 2. Using their talents to provide a needed product or service leads to success; 3. Success is a good thing. Job well done Ms. Hughes and Ms. Clark!
