My father saw a review of this book and asked for it. He loved it! He's in a nursing home and tells everyone who visits him about this great book and how fascinating it is - he had me buy more to send as gifts to friends and relatives.

Who Knew Lobsters Could Be So Entertaining?

This was an awesome read and was the book that began me interested in reading books about obscure animals. Since this book, I have read books about the platypus, coelacanth, and other wonderous creatures of the world. I learned alot about the lobster and the men that search for them as livelihood or scientific endeavor. This book willnot disappoint! Read it!

Self-imposed or Government-mandated regulation?

Trevor Corson does a great job of putting a face on the lobster fishery, including its past, its future, and of some of the people who participate in it. It also does a super job at opening the door so we can catch a glimpse of relationships between lobstermen, the scientific community, and government agencies that have connections to America's fisheries.

I am an invertebrate zoologist by training, and I teach courses in marine biology and invertebrate zoology. Even a of couple years after reading this book I refer to it in my classes. Corson provides some good summary information on the status of our understanding of the ecology and reproductive biology of the American lobster, as well as the status of the Maine lobster fishery.

If you are like me, you will be impressed by the self-regulating fisheries practices developed and used by lobstemen that have maintained the lobster fishery for many, many years. If the info in the book is accurate, it appears that problems crop up in the fishery most often when government agencies try to develop and impose their own regulations on lobstermen. That was an eye-opener.

Another delightful part of the book explored interactions between lobstermen and the scientific community. Their developing relationship appears to have potential to benefit both parties.

I found the book to be readable and enjoyable through and through.

5 stars for fun (and food)

A great book for kids who like to play with bugs
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 1999-06-24
This book has information about rolypolies, which are my son's favorite bugs. It also has many activities you can do with rolypolies, such as making a rolypoly hotel, a rolypoly playground, racing rolled up rolypolies down a ramp, and much more.

These activities seem pretty silly to me as a parent, but the kids loved them. The book also encourages the kids to observe many different things about the bugs and their behaviors. Heightening the kids awareness of small details is a good skill the kids can apply to other activities.

Useless to anyone in the eastern US; probably elsewhere

Apparently, my eternal quest to find a decent guide to western Atlantic crustaceans will remain just that, eternal! The author must be quite impressed with it as his photo credits are written in a bigger font than the names of the animals! While these pictures are wonderful, and the descriptions provide a fair amount of information, glaring omissions are the rule rather than the exception. For instance, the three most important and common commercial shrimp in the southeastern US, , and < Litopenaeus setiferus>, are not mentioned anywhere in the text! Nor is , the ubiquitous blue crab, and most of the other Portunid crabs of the US (note: is mentioned in a small blurb, though not described). None of the common hermit crabs, lady crabs or purse crabs of the western Atlantic is listed. Forget about anything that may be most common in brackish settings such as the marsh crabs, shore crabs or mud crabs! is listed, but a juvenile is shown in the photo! There are only two species of fiddler and box crabs listed and only three spider/arrow crabs. Even Palaemonetes vulgaris, the grass shrimp that is so common I've found them in the pockets of my bathing suit, is omitted. Don't think you will be able to use this as a key either. There is nothing that compares species that might be confused. I cannot imagine who this book was intended for, but it is useless to anyone, scientist or layperson, in the eastern US. I am not an expert on Indo-Pacific, eastern Atlantic or Pacific forms, but I would imagine the same for those regions; the book is not that big! If you need a guide to the Crustacea of the US, you will have to stick with Ruppert and Fox's "Seashore Animals of the Southeast", though it is far from comprehensive; the FAO Marine Resources guides, limited to commercial species; or the scientific literature.

This is an incredible achievement - stunning photographs of shrimps, crabs and 'prawns' from all over the world - more than any diver could hope to see in a lifetime. The quality of the reproductions and the wealth of biological information makes this a must-have book for anyone who likes to see more than just a few coloured fish when they dive. It is particularly accessible to the non-scientist and I can't imagine anyone with an interest in marine life reading this and not learning something.

Crustacea Guide Of The World

Crustacea Guide Of The World, althought written for the lay "marine biologist" is none-the-less scientifically correct. The book is divided into two sections, Atlantic decapods and Pacific decapods, giving the reader the ability to more acurately and quickly identify the animal of interest. Included within the text are short stories illuminating interesting behaviors of decapods. Paired with a photograph of each animal the author has provided, along with a concise description, the geographical distribution. For anyone interested in marine life I highly recommend this book to be added to their library.

Sad lives and deaths

Review Date: 2004-03-29
Paul is the narrator. Every chapter alternates from one timeline to the other. First chapter tells of Paul starting a pilgrimage of sorts on what would have been the 6th birthday of his dead son. He is going to the seaside town where he died, and where Paul lived some of the few moments of happiness in his life. Chapter 2 reels back to his days in art school, where he met his wife Ruth, and where his days of true happiness began. Paul had a very sad childhood, among secrets and hidden feelings, his mother dead and his father emotionally absent. The death of his son gives Paul an opportunity to reflect on his losses. As tragic as his pilgrimage is, it ends up on what to me sounds like a hopeful note of acceptance.

An intimate journey

Andrew Cowan's newest novel begins in sadness: the narrator Paul addresses his dead son Euan with a muted sorrow that finds the beauty in the most simple of scenes. This quietly emotional novel continues on a journey of the past to explore Paul's relationship with Euan as well as with others integral to his life, including his own father. Illuminated by his grief for Euan, Paul's life comes into sharp focus as the author leads the reader inexorably to the conclusion.

This is a purely literary work, recommended for those who love language and the meanings of gestures, who like to discover greater truths through the details of ordinary lives. Cowan's prose is lyrical yet clear, at times self-conscious but always impressive. His abundant talents for literary fiction are on full display in this book. However, if you are searching for an uplifting book with a compelling plot, I recommend that you look elsewhere.

The previous reviewer must have a big ax to grind! His ad hominum attack on the author is outrageous, and ridiculous! I have both a medical research background, and lived many years near the Atlantic Ocean. Horseshoe crabs were once so common, you practically tripped over them, now they are virtually nonexistent!

Horseshoe crabs are in such big trouble that the Governors of New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland and Virginia have drastically reduced the allowable catch off their shores! The situation has deteriorated to the point that the Audubon Society is concerned about the potential extinction of certain migrating birds, which are dependent on Horseshoe crab eggs! Should we just sit on our hands in order to keep one tiny, and economically insignificant industry - whose sole purpose is to turn these ancient, and medically priceless, creatures into bait - happy? Sorry! No way! These offshore waters belong to all of us! They are not anyone's private domain to destroy at one's leisure for monetary gain!

No stars!

This book appears to be largely the product of one man's personal agenda. Readers should use extreme caution in reading and using the "information" in this book. I encourage every reader who is seriously interested in horseshoe crabs to follow up by fact-checking with research scientists, biologists, and local conservation groups-there are many involved with horseshoe crabs. Hence, there is information available on horseshoe crabs from reliable and reputable primary sources. Before spending your money here..do your homework! and before acting on anything in this book, find the truth for yourself from those who do scientific research, who have dedicated their lives to studying these unique animals, and who take a pragmatic and scientific approach to conservation without manipulating the public with overly emotional and inflamatory propaganda. After that, if you are still curious, check it out from the library first...you'll thank me later.

This is a good field guide to aquatic insects. It gives basic information on a wide range of insects and crustacceans, primarily in Eastern United States waterways. Although I own other guides that are much more comprehensive, you can't beat the price ($7.95 U.S. Cover Price)for what you get here. Definitely a good value.
