Balancing and Rich Asian people's images.

Review Date: 2002-08-31
This book is a good source to balance the word and image of Islam and Muslim in the western world. Muslim is not only in Arabian peninsula or Gulf contries, in fact Indonesia is the largest muslim population in the world. Many pictures on the book can give the different side of Islam in Southeast asia. They don't speak arabic, they don't have big nose, they are short, skiny etc. I recommend this book for the people who wants to know Muslim in Southeast asia without reading a long history book.

But there is unbalance information in the book I noticed, specially information about Indonesian muslim in the introduction. Steve Raymer seems doesn't have a good source that he can get the information about Indonesian muslim. Might be because they are so many and he tries to put it in the same ammount as Malaysian which is only about 1/6 or 1/8 of Indonesian in comparison. It is best if he can consult or clarify his information with the Indonesian sociologists, historians, or scholars in order to validate the information. One of the examples is on second page, the picture doesn't not macth the note (citation). The picture is showing the people who are suplicating, is not always in arabic, but he says those people are reciting the koran. This is just small example.
I recommend people who have this book to check with the Southeast Asian people to clarify the information.
More than that, good work and well done.

Good, balanced view of Muslims in Southeast Asia

As one who's lived in Southeast Asia off and on for the past seven years, the thing that strikes me about the book by Raymer are the brilliant photos, yes. But the way they are put together gives a human face to Southeast Asia's Muslim peoples. A fair and realistic look at them is refreshing in light of many Western reports that tout them all as gun-toting extremists.

Captivating

Steve Raymer has done an exceptional job at capturing the humanity of Southeast Asian Muslims through the lenses of the faithful camera. The pictures are breathtakingly beautiful, while the accompanying caption and text serve as an easy-to-read commentary especially for those expecting only an excursion into the subject. His attempt at a sympathetic understanding of a culture that is relatively obscure to the average Westerner is commendable; the journalistic objectivity being a salient feature of the book.

Raymer, in my opinion, succeeded in shattering the perpetuated myth surrounding the perception of Muslims. Not only does he cogently disprove the notion of a monolithic Muslim culture across the Muslim world, but he also demonstrates the existence of diversity with which Islam is practiced in this forgotten region. The cognitive image of either a rich Middle-Easterner or a terrorist brandishing an AK-47 so often associated with Islam must now be relegated to the domain of stereotypes. The book is probably a silent apologist for the peace of Islam.

Caveat emptor for those expecting their stereotypes confirmed and prejudices accomodated; the book is sure to frustrate them.

The maxim that a picture is worth a thousand words had never been truer. The picture is now worth millions of humans.

Garbage have taken time to settle in and become a band that everyone knows and loves. The first album was average but showed me what heights this band could achieve. This album is what they have achieved and it has some great tracks that are just so good. If we sleep together and The trick is to keep breathing are the best two. There are a few in here that they could of done without but the great tracks make up for it, it is worth listening to and if you like thumping tunes, play this.

I really love this CD

This CD rocks. Not only do the first twelve songs kick butt, lick the pavement and thirteen are totally awesome. Especially thirteen. It is a very sweet song that touched me.

Beware when buying this CD!!!

I'd love to write a critical review of this CD, but sadly I've never heard this version. I've been trying unsuccessfully for more than a year to order it, and each time I've received the wrong CD: specifically, the Japanese import with extra track "Push It-- Boom Boom Satellites Remix" instead of extra tracks "Lick The Pavement" and "Thirteen." Apparently, there's a universal ISBN snafu surrounding these two imports.

I thought ordering from one of Amazon Marketplace's vendors would be a better way to go, but I've just received another wrong CD from one of them and I'm so frustrated I could spit kittens.

I'm sure the extra tracks are as good as the rest of the album we all got to hear in the States, so I gave the import 5 stars. But if you order it, be prepared for a long wait and a big hassle returning the incorrect CDs you receive. Good luck!

Awesome plot and I have never read anything like i; well, except of course, the Harry Potter Series which is 1000 times better than this but that's besides the point. However, overall it is a good read.

This edition is now selling for over 60 bucks as a collectors item. Dawson's lastest edition to Rock history, "Rock Around the Clock" is another well written must read and must have collectors book for all those who need to know, Rock and Roll.

A "must" for RnR roots & jump-blues fans.

It's pretty funny that commercials trying to be "hip" are using these songs now. Of course this book doesn't pick one song for an absolute answer. Instead (and as it should be)it traces the various influences which evolved to be "Rock and Roll" - I'm sorry to see this is out-of-stock hopefully there'll be a reprint soon.

Best rock 'n' roll book ever!

I'm sick of reading junky rock books where the author thinks it all started with Bill Haley and "Rock Around the Clock." These two guys obviously know their history of R&B and country boogie and pop music from the late '40s and '50s, and they obviously have listened to the records they write about. Maybe it's got too much detail for a casual reader, but if you love old R&B like I do, it's the best.

This is a great series! The main characters live out their Christian faith in a public school. I was impressed with how the author shared the day to day struggles the teens dealt with everyday and how their faith influenced their decisions. There is lots of mystery, intrigue and twists and turns in each book. As an adult finishing reading one book, I could not wait to start the next book in the series. The story line kept my attention and left me wanting more. A definite superb read!

This book was written shortly after my wife and I spent 3 days in the wilderness with Howe. His knowledge of wild things and passion for it's preservation were evident during this time. Howe is well known in wilderness preservation circles; not to the liking of the government run U S Fish and Wildlife Service and U S Dept. of Agriculture. Howe is the friend of Wilderness and you will be awakened to what is really going on in our National Forests.

I read this book at a difficult time in my life. My mother had died days before, and I was sitting in the closest weeping, when by my foot lay a copy of Will Power! I wiped away the tears and began to read, expectantly, looking for answers.

I was inspired and enraptured to say the least, and my life suddenly took on new meaning. I could breath again, I could sing again. I began to rap involuntarily. I could not stop rapping, until musical ecstacy permeated every pour of my being. I was liberated at last from the sorrows of my recent loss.

Thank you Will Power! for changing my life forever.

I definitely recommend reading her other books because they are just as wonderful. Additionlly, I have actually met Mrs. Houle in person and she is an amazing, warm woman.

I picked this up at a bookstore. My cousin was going to be graduating, but I wanted to read it before I gave it to her. It has all these really great lines from commencement speeches. A lot of them are funny (Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, Conan O'Brien, Kermit the Frog) and it's weird because they're not all by people you'd think were funny, like Kofi Annan and Colin Powell. My favorite advice in the book is from Wayne Coyne of The Flaming Lips, "Avoid jellyfish." I ended up keeping my copy and getting another one for my cousin.

Hey Dude, this is the book we should have been asked to compare and contrast

YesTales is both informative and enjoyable (a rare combination, indeed). It is not encumbered with ranting opinion. I found it to be punchy, poignant and colorful ... a lively account of three decades of Yes. And the Limericks are hilarious! I have been a Yes fan for many years, and love all eras of Yes music. A Yes fan of any era would really enjoy this book, and any real Yes fan will know that says a lot! Three decades is a lot of music, and very distinctive eras. I loved it!
