The book that caused Elvis to hear his call
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 12 total.

Of course I knew about Elvis but I hadn't read much about him. I wouldn't call myself an "Elvis Fan." Then I happened to get a chance to visit Graceland one day and after that visit, I knew that Elvis answered his life's call and was compelled by Spirit to be the legend that he was. So what would influence Elvis to become so great?

The answer is in this book. The book is not about Elvis. It has a little introduction about how Elvis used this book. "The Impersonal Life" was actually first published anonymously in 1916. The author has been discovered but little is known about the author. Elvis bought this book by the case and gave it out freely to friends and acquaintences. He read this book over and over and over, underlining and putting notes in the margins. He absorbed the meaning of the book and you know that is true after you read it.

The book's content is very spiritually fulfilling. It does not include religous language, symbolism or dogma but it is very spiritual. "I AM" is speaking to the reader. On page 122 it reads "I may be expressing through you beautiful symphonies of sound, color or language, that manifest as music, art or poetry, according to mortal terminology, and which so affects others as to cause them to acclaim you as one of the great ones of the day."

Does that not say what Elvis was about? This book contains the words that caused Elvis to hear and understand his call. The book is small and very easy to read. It is rich with Spirit speaking and it compels you to live out your life answering your call, whatever that may be. Wow! I am glad I discovered this book. I, too, will read it over many times. It's definitely worth more than its weight in gold.

A diamond of a little book (will move YOU like Elvis!)

The Impersonal Life is being marketed by DeVorss & Co as "the Little Book in Which Elvis found the light." And for good reasons: it's a sound marketing move, it gets more people to read it....and this potent little book will truly help you find the (inner/spiritual) light if you are even slightly seeking it.

This book has little to do with Elvis, except that he loved it second only to the Bible, handed out hundreds of copies to friends...and it enlightened and inspired him. The Impersonal Life was written in the early twentieth century by the enigmantic Joseph S. Brenner, who wrote and published it under the pen name ANONYMOUS.

So what is it? Firstly, it is definitely a little but very profound book. DeVorss' special Graceland-authorized edition (with a young and thin Elvis on the cover) is tiny enough to carry in your pants or jacket pocket, purse, carry on luggage etc.

Secondly, it's basically an early 20th century version of Conversations With God, although it does not venture near some of the controversial areas that the later (and I think inferior) volumes of that contemporary book did.

The Impersonal Life is also seems like a first-person work(the author speaking as that spark of divinity he contends is within all of us) that could have been written by the great Ernest Holmes, author of the landmark Science of Mind writings. Its core idea is that your mind is linked to a Higher Power so a "Thinker is a Creator...(who) lives in a world of his own conscious creation."

Brenner, writing as the voice of God and appealing and explaining to each reader's own divine spark, writes that "every thing, every condition, every event that ever transpired was first an idea in the mind. It was by desiring, by thinking, and by speaking forth the Word, that these ideas came into visible manifestation."

Why did Elvis care and be influenced by The Impersonal Life -- and why should YOU? This little book, with each of its words as potent as literary dynamite blasting away earthly mental clutter and worries, stresses the importance of belief and nonshakeable FAITH...and argues that inspiration and intuitive flashes just don't happen. There's a reason. And if you follow these impersonal flashes you can live an impersonal life....uplifted from the personal human concerns and preoccupations, better focused on spiritual concerns and increasingly empowered with increasingly documentable spiritual power.

The words that comforted Elvis & ME!

This is the Elvis that few people have ever seen or known about--the Spiritual side. I truely enjoyed reading the SAME words that comforted Elvis in his times of need. The words contained with in this small, but powerful little book spoke out to me as if IT was written just for me. This must have been how Elvis felt while reading it too. This book is like an instruction manual directly from God, speaking from within. I will keep this book and read it many times as a reminder of the power of God, which is found within. It makes a great gift for those who are interested in the spirual side of Elvis, but most importantly for those who want to discover more of the spiritual side of themselves.

I am an intermediate guitarist and although I will never match Carlos Santana, this product is great for learning the licks and methods of some of his greatest tunes. The backing tracks are adequate for playing along and learning the timing and the songs are varied enough to be challenging. The book is invaluable for reading the music or finger placement. All in all, a fun product that I wouldn't hesitate to recommend.

This is a wonderful tool for learning Sanatana songs. I want to check out the other titles in this series as well. The quality of the backing and solo tracks is excellent, and the selection of songs is very logical. I have been playing guitar for a year, taking lessons for about half that time, and this is challenging, but doable material. Highly recommended.

The easiest way to play something hard!

Having only been playing the guitar for a year or so. I bought In session with Carlos Santana thinking it would be something I could aspire to in the next couple of years. Well I was wrong, with the well-structured cd, offering slowed down solos, and excellent backing tracks, I have nearly mastered Moonflower in only a couple of weeks. Don't get me wrong in thinking this is only for beginners, so of the tracks are challenging to say the least! I thoroughly recommend this to anybody. It's the best tab book I've ever bought.....and there have been many!

"The incredible secret formula book" gives plenty of neat little things to keep you and your kids busy on those boring summer days.

Most of the things in this book use items you probably all ready have in your home: paper, corn starch, sugar and various food items.

This book details things like How to make invisible ink or disappering ink. If that doesn't interest you there's making chalk out of egg shells or how to recylce paper. you can even make "Mutant slime" a kids favorite. Don't like mutant Slime? how 'bout psylly slime or miss muppet slime? victal slime or udderly Gross slime? lots of fun for kids and thier mom and or dad.

Peter was my professor and I had to read the book for his class, but I liked it anyway. It was very interesting and concerns an issue that is very important in today's world. It is even an easy read for those outside the academic world (unlike books by certain other professors I could name). Thanks, Peter! And go ahead and get Nina that American Girl.

Great photos of The Great Man Himself. Full page photos showing Jimi in London from when he first arrived here. He always seems to appear larger than life - really happy to add this book to my Jimi collection.

What do you want in a photo book of Jimi Hendrix? You want lots of high quality photos that are not tiny, that are big and all over the book where there's minimal written word and the photos just keep comin'. From the back cover: "Over 130 iconic, rare, and previously unpublished images of the Jimi Hendrix Experience from the archive of Rex Features, Britain's leading picture library." Published 2005. Almost half the photos take up the full size of a page. If it's Jimi photos with and without the band, that you're lookin' for, do not pass up this book. I own about 12 Jimi books and this is the best photo one, no question. My copy has a cover photo that I think is a better photo than the one shown here. He's got a cool coat, a rose pattern shirt and red pants and leaning on a staircase wall with a cigarette.

A top pick for any dedicated Hendrix fan

In 1965 guitarist Hendrix signed with former Animals bassist Chandler and went to England, making a name for himself with his Jimi Hendrix Experience and returning to the U.S. several years later to become a star. REX COLLECTIONS: THE JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE gathers color photos to follow his career form his earliest London shows and 1967 tours to later years. Many of these photos are new to this book, most are full-page presentations, and the commentary provides a fine survey of Hendrix's life. A top pick for any dedicated Hendrix fan.

The previous reviewer probably didn't understand the title, that's all. This book is fascinating! It's about the music of Jimmy Page...where he got his ideas from and how he put it all together. The book also lets the reader learn about the tangents he would go off on during concerts but he always kept it within the framework of the song he was playing. He and Led Zeppelin were best known for their improvisational skills on stage. This book tells it all and has a ton of great pictures in it!! Well worth the price of admission on this book!!

Just like the book is titled, Joe Satriani: Surfing With The Alien is a note for note transcription for guitarists looking to add to their repertoire, or just wanting to practice some challenging material.

The book itself has some amazing insight into the complexities behind Joe Satriani's guitar technique and musicianship. There's a 4-page intro that reveals secrets such as which modes, scales and chord progressions each song is built upon. As if that wasn't enough, the reader is again brought "up close and personal" with all 10 tracks having their inner workings revealed through thorough explanations.

The rest of the book is like any other tablature: a note-for-note transcription with easy-to-read tabs underneath. If you're like me, you don't have time (or patience) to guess which notes you're playing. After purchasing this book, you're well on your way to practicing some of the best (and most challenging) rock guitar music of our day.

Surfing With The Alien is a great album.

This book is very awesome. It has all the tabs for the "Surfing with the Alien" Joe Satriani album. While some of the notes may be a little off in a song or two, it's very well transcribed and tabbed. A lot of the stuff here is a little difficult, so I'd recommend it to a serious player who wants to do some serious shredding & rhytmn guitar. It's even better once you learn a whole song, pop the cd in the player, and play along with Joe.
The feeling it's great, but you'll need to spend some time practicing. Remember, practice makes perfect.

This is a great reference book to use when trying to determine where particular songs on the mainstream rock and modern rock charts topped out at. It's also a great browse to see what songs you haven't heard in a long, long time.

There is not too much to say other than this is a comprehensive book that covers those two Billboard charts in their entirety for the time period listed.

A great companion book

I had bought Whitburn's Billboard Book of Top 40 Hits 1955-2000 and while it's a fantastic book charting all the pop hits of the last 1/2 century, it was lacking in the representation of the album rock I grew up listening to. For example, AC/DC has only 3 tracks listed in the Top 40 Hits book, but there's 28 tracks listed in the Mainstream/Modern Rock book. In the more modern era, Pearl Jam has 7 tracks in the pop book but 33 tracks in the rock book. I highly recommend this book to all the head-bangers, grungers, and new wavers looking for a little history of the music they love.

I stumbled onto the original version of this book and almost didn't buy it. I didn't buy it at first, but after finding myself spending 30 minutes or more paging through it on two subsequent occasions, I decided that it might be a worthy addition to my library after all. Boy, was I right. My original copy, now a tattered paperback, is in dire need of replacement. This is an invaluable reference if you grew up listening to the album rock stations in the 80's. I've found several obscure songs that I couldn't track down through the traditional Top 40 or Hot 100 books, which made the book pay for itself in my estimation.

This book does a good job of covering John Lennon's life from his youth in Liverpool to his meteoric rise to fame as an artist and later as a political activist.

John Lennon was a very complex man. Brilliant and high-spirited, the "Chief Beatle," the man who founded the world's greatest band and who made the world listen by the time he was 23 has commanded the world's attention once again. Readers will come away Imagining the world through John's works.

The book isn't one he wrote but a complilation of things he's said and his opinions. The book is funny in some places and well...not funny in others.
