One of those books you'll save and re-read as you grow up, like Milt Gross, Charles Addams, Tove Jansson.

Good, not too-scary, story, and detailed, funny illustrations that reveal something new at every reading-kids will want to read it over and over again.

Let's have something from these guys for every holiday!

Oooooh Scarrrreeeeeyyyy!

Halloween Motel is a rare Halloween Treat that captures the color and fun of Halloween. Sean Diviny's story is hillarious and spooky in all the right places. You'll wish you had a reservation at this hotel when you see the wacky cast of characters created by Joe Rocco. There are many delightful nooks and crannies in this book that make you want to look at it again and again.

Awesome!

This is such an excellent book, both for kids and adults alike. The story was so charming! (Of course, Halloween is my favorite holiday, so I'm a little biased.) The illustrations were particularly striking. The wild and wacky characters just jump right off the page, thanks to Mr. Rocco's illustrations. I recommend this book for anybody who loves Halloween.

This book has alot of good events and creepy adventures about thses haunted animals. You would be really, really, really scared when you read these shourt stories about real animals. My favorite short story was the Twister Farewell. This short story was about this dog named Twister, but his real name is Baxter. This flashback when his real name was Baxter, he had an onwer named Tracy. Tracy was about to go to school when suddenly Baxter started barking at her. He was barking cause he doesn't want her to go. She asked her mom if Baxter could stay inside, but she said no. So tracy went to school. In school, The principal got a report of a twister coming. Everyone got under a table to get covered, except Tracy. She wanted to go out but the principal stoped her. After the twister she ran outside and the neighborhood look desreted. Then this man saw a him going inside the twister. She went out looking for him. She found him and decided to call him twister. If you want to know more you have to read the book.

I will make my review short and to the point. This particular book was unbeleivable (considering I read it back in 1998). It kept me wondering whether these stories were real. Allan Zullo, I must say, is magnificent in collecting all these stories to give "us" readers to enjoy.

While Christopher Pike has been popular among older teen readers for decades, he's expanded his books to a younger audience of readers (8 - 12 year olds), in his recent series called Spooksville, which has some similarities to R. L. Stine's Goosebumps and Fear Street books.

In this third book in the series, four friends (Adam, Watch, Sally, and Cindy) go into the Haunted Cave in search of man's evolutionary missing link--something that's part human, part ape. However, three of them get trapped inside the cave without a way out, stuck on an endless trail of bloodthirsty trolls and bats and impending death, while the remaining friend tries to find a way to rescue them.

I thought "The Haunted Cave" was more of an adventure story than a horror story--and definitely not as bloody or provocative as some of Pike's older teen books; so this book is appropriate for all ages, particularly preteens. Still, I prefer his other books.

Wishbone is a lovable ,talking, pooch full of stories. He has a tail overflowing in excitement, as the humans around him try to grasp what is truly going on.
Aside from all the cuteness,Wishbone explains words the reader may not know. His words are bold, for simple reference.
This story isn't overly scary, nor wordy. It has enough adventure to keep young readers wanting more.

This book was fun and mysterious.

This makes for a doubly mysterious book. It was funny and kind of scary. It as a surprise at the end as all mysteries are. I liked the book and thing everyone should read the whole series.

I bought this book for my husband because he grew up around that area and because of Voorhies Castle. We both read it, this book is wonderful. Reading any kind of books having to do with the towns you grew up in and the histories are interesting. I plan on buying other books of Troy Taylors.

This is an excellent book. Decatur, IL native Troy Taylor wrote an entire Haunted Decatur Series, then went back and revamped the series, adding more info. on the places in it, as well as adding new locations. Who better to write about the History and Hauntings of this historic IL town than one of it's own.

Troy's revision of "Haunted Decatur" is great. As a resident of Decatur, I enjoy Troy's works. As an English teacher, I would like to see more careful editing, but that does not deter from the importance of his work. As a long-time "ghost hunter" and student of the paranormal, I have found Troy's works helpful and informative, as well as right-down scary. It is helpful to visit the sites he discusses and see first-hand the locations that are described. Having seen the sites he describes in many of his books, I can say that his descriptions are "on the money." I would love to co-author a book with him some day!

Haunted Houses

Review Date: 2003-07-05
Because the body is the house of the soul, it should not be necessary to focus on abuse, either emotional or sexual - actually, one and the same, really, as limited only to females; many men are composites of enormous stress, unresolved conflict resolution, and highly leveraged disciplinary measures from childhood and indeed up until manhood. As I watched a parent today require his 2 year old son to remain sitting in the chair he was in (despite his son's drive to "move" consistent with nature's instinct and drive), I wondered how such patterns of restraint might affect him, and their relationship later. What messages were being sent by the father? What messages were received by the son? Beyond the fact of this dominance display, the reasons were frail if not inadequate to produce the mandate in this instance, although they are not always. The pattern was used throughout the day by both parents, and I wondered if they were trying to teach "patience, and self restraint" in so young a child who is little more than a bundle of energy, new to the possibility of moving, and hence, inspired by his new found ability. What happens to the desire to move when it is so abrubtly curtailed in so young a soul? When nature conflicts with man's desire to control nature, doesn't nature always find a different avenue of expression, some not so natural? Requiring a child to "stay," as if he were a pet may not be the ideal method to teach values or mechanics, but instead displays power that children are apt to emulate as they become adults. While safety is always an issue for children, convenience often supercedes the issues of safety and become the dominating factor in relationships instead, to the detriment of nature's logical progress, destroying the ability to reach the compromises characteristic of natural selection. Nature rarely destroys, but instead adapts.

The BEST book for me as a spouse.

This is easily the best of a dozen or so books I have worked through. It is defininately Christian in its approach, even if you do not hold this world view there is comfort and information for the spouse of a sexual abuse survivor.

This book ties for first place in my list of resources with Laura Davis's "Allies in Healing" (NOT a Christian work but excellent nonetheless). Spouses, you are not alone, unique or crazy! These volumes will help you grasp what your survivor is working through and give you help in dealing with the damage of sexual abuse (for yourself and the survivor).

This is a fun book that provides some great Montana travel tips. Stevens primarily focuses on haunted locations you can visit, but in many of the comments at the end of each section she also provides information about other unique places in the area to visit. Stevens' tips will provide travelers with an intimate experience of Montana.

I also really enjoyed how the sections were divided up so the reader knows how likely it is to encounter something at each location. The stories and personal experiences provided for each location give the reader a bit of history, insight into the ghostly activity and a desire to visit each place in person.

Haunted Montana is an entertaining book in and of itself, but it is also a useful tool for those looking to visit Montana.

Karen Stevens' book "Haunted Montana: A Ghost Hunter's Guide to Haunted Places You Can Visit -If You Dare!" focuses on haunted places in Montana that are accessible to the public, so that you too can go and try to experience the spooky goings-on yourself! This is a guidebook for ghost hunters in Montana, as Stevens is an avid ghost hunter herself.

While this book does cover some of the most famous sites in Montana mentioned in previous Montana ghost books by Munn and Baumler, such as the Grandstreet Theater in Helena, and Virginia City, it is different in several ways:

1. Stevens covers only publicly accessible sites, no private homes, so that you can go and do a little investigating yourself.

2. Stevens adds some new sites, especially in eastern Montana, not covered
before.

3. One of the best features is a ranking of the frequency of ghostly activity at the site, whether low, moderate, or high; very useful to the novice ghost hunter

Following is a listing of the sites this book covers, first the town (or closest town) and then the sites themselves:

Anaconda: Copper Village Museum and Art Center (originally Anaconda City Hall); Anaconda Copper Company Smelter site with stack

Bannack State Park: Meade Hotel; Bessette House; Grasshopper Creek; Old Jail

Big Hole Valley: Big Hole National Battlefield; Chief Joseph Pass

Billings: Western Heritage Center (originally Parmly Billings Memorial Library); Union Depot/"The Beanery"restaurant; Juliano's Restaurant; Parmly Billings Library

Bozeman: Casa Sanchez restaurant; MSU Strand Union Theater

Browning: Highway 464/Duck Lake Road, between Browning and Babb

Butte: Arts Chateau Museum (originally Charles Walker Clark Mansion); Rookwood Speakeasy (originally Rookwood Hotel); old Hirbour barbershop; old City Hall Jail

Deer Lodge: Old Montana Territorial Prison; Grant-Kohrs Ranch

Fort Peck: Fort Peck Summer Theater; Fort Peck Hotel

Fromberg: Little Cowboy Bar

Gallatin Gateway: Gallatin Gateway Inn

Garnet (ghost town): Kelly's Saloon; J. K. Wells Hotel

Great Falls: Tracy's 24-Hour Family Restaurant (originally Stanton Bank & Trust foundations and Hank's Hamburger Haven); Paris Gibson Square Museum of Art(originally Central High School); Black Horse Lake (near Great Falls, north on Highway 87, near mile marker 9)

Hamilton: Marcus Daly National Historic Site ("Riverside" mansion)

Hardin (Crow Agency): Little Bighorn Battlefield

Havre: Park Hotel; Havre Railroad Museum and Havre Beneath the Streets (underground display of exhibits); Oxford Bar

Helena: Grandstreet Theater

Highway 382 (Perma to Hot Springs): Markle Hill

Hobson: Meadow Brook Farm (Bed and Breakfast)

Hysham: South of Interstate 94: the old Bridger Trail (?)

Kalispell: Conrad Mansion

Lincoln: Hotel Lincoln

Miles City: Club 519 (originally First National Bank); Olive Hotel (originally Leighton Hotel)

Missoula: Fort Missoula

Nevada City: Nevada City Hotel

Red Lodge: Pollard Hotel

Reed Point: Hotel Montana and Wild Horse Saloon

Virginia City: Many of the buildings have ghost incidents, including Bennett House (now aB&B), Wells Fargo Coffee House (originally Buford Store); Bonanza Inn(originally a Catholic hospital), Bonanza House (originally nun's rectory), Opera House and rehearsal hall behind.

West Glacier: Belton Chalet and railroad station

All in all, "Haunted Montana" is a splendid addition to Montana's ghost lore, and especially valuable for tourists and ghost hunters of all ages!

Hauntingly Excellent!

Haunted Montana is a must read for paranormal enthusiasts everywhere. Karen Stevens writes with an expert pen and is a ghost hunter and paranormal researcher of highest integrity, skill, and experience. I know, having had the privilege of joining her on many ghost hunting forays to England and Wales as well as a few stateside. As a research librarian, she also knows books - understands what makes a book a good and entertaining read. In Haunted Montana, she combines this knowledge with her extensive paranormal experience to give readers an incredibly appealing ghost book.

All sites listed are open to the public which is a tremendous bonus sure to please those wishing to explore the hauntings on their own. Even site telephone numbers are given, along with the addresses. But armchair ghost lovers won't be disappointed. Stevens' well-written essays transport, taking the reader right to the scene as if you were there with her.

Another very helpful feature is the rating scale of 'Ghostly Activity Level.' Noted at the top of each new listing, the scale immediately shows whether a site's paranormal goings-on are Low, Moderate, or High.

In addition, as noted in the book's introduction, another perk is that Stevens chose only sites with recently recorded paranormal activities. This makes the book an invaluable ghosting guide, increasing the chances of catching a glimpse of the activity for those wishing to explore on their own.

The essays themselves are varied and fascinating. Stevens gives a brief summary of the site's 'History' and then delves into the actual 'Phenomena,' detailing the haunting in a refreshing combination of Stevens' interviews with eyewitnesses and then describing her own experiences and impressions upon visiting the site.

Another feature I really enjoyed are the little personal commentaries at the end of each essay. Sometimes amusing, sometimes poignant, each one is the perfect wrap-up to the listing. The observation to the account of the Nez Perce haunting at Big Hole National Battlefield (The Spirits of Big Hole National Battlefield) was particularly touching - and revealing of Stevens' integrity as a paranormal researcher: she reminds possible visitors that the site is 'a place of tragedy and should be approached with respect.'

Lastly, the book closes with Stevens' own 'Tips For Ghost Hunters.' Concise, insightful, and definitely helpful, this feature alone is well worth the price of the book. Karen Stevens is indeed an authority in her field and has amassed her knowledge through decades of hands-on experience. No one does it better.

Don't miss Haunted Montana. It's a guaranteed ghosting good read!

If you like true ghost stories, you can't miss this book! All of the Haunted Ohio series are great, but this one is my favorite. Chilling stuff like a haunted covered-over swimming pool at Stivers Middle School (gulp!), the many ghosts of Dayton's USAF museum, and a strange drum with something rustling inside (sure, it sounds harmless enough, but wait till you read the story). Plus time warps, poltergiests and just about any type of haunted building you can think of! Not to mention some great stories of unknown creatures. I usually don't find bigfoot stories very scary, but two in this book -- "Buckeye Bigfoots" and "Bigfoot in Greene County"-- really gave me a major case of the willies! And if you can sleep after reading the "Harmful Haunts" chapter ... well, you've either got ice water in your veins or else (gasp!) you're already a ghost yourself! Buy this book today -- you're guaranteed to lose some sleep!

Chris Woodyard always has such intriguing introductions to her books. In Haunted Ohio she talked about second sight running in her family. Now in the II volume she talks about being haunted herself as she collected the stories and about readers she's met and their experiences after reading her first book. I think she should write an entire book of these stories alone.

In the chapter Things That Go Bump in the Night, she explores the poltergeist phenomenon. Woodyard says, "Poltergeists rarely produce apparitions or a spirit with "personality." It's been my experience that a noisy apparition is a ghost not a poltergeist so I disagree with that statement especially since other spirits can become attracted to the released energy.

Many of the places the author went to personally and records her impressions along with those of her interview subject. I found this book as scary and well written as Woodyard's last. I label Haunted Ohio II a spook-tacular read!

I loved it! It should be required reading for all Ohioans!!

I love to read books. As soon as I am done with one, I have to get another, and I had been eyeing Haunted Ohio in the bookstore at the mall, and my curiosity got the better of me. And I am glad it did! I loved the book! It really struck home with me. It also put a fright into me! I found that I could only read it during the daylight hours, or I would lose some sleep!! The book was wonderful, and my mother thought so to, she called me everyday to see if I was done reading it so that she could borrow it! And now that she is half-way through, she calls asking if I bought the next one yet because she wants to borrow that one too!!!

Once they hear one of the stories, they will do anything, yes anything, to hear another. I have been fascinating classes with this book for 3 years now. I have actually had students look me up over the summer to get me to read them the ending to a story if the bell rings before we finish. The stories are just creepy enough to be interesting, yet not enough to give nightmares to the littler ones. I always begin the telling by reading the introduction where Allan tells how the stories are really true....and of course we read them with the lights out! Attention all camp out leaders, teachers, sleepover planners, BUY THIS BOOK!

Meet Joe Sherlock, a boy who dreams of following in the steps of his namesake (last name that is). Joe is your average school boy who happens to be the middle child and the only boy in his family, a fact which he finds most annoying while his older and younger sisters seem to delight in embarrassing him at every turn. He embarks on the case of the Haunted Toolshed at the behest of his neighbor, Mr. Asher and what ensues is quite hilarious for the reader, but poor Joe Sherlock...he's got some issues, not the least of which is keeping his Captain Wink Wink obsession a secret while trying to solve the mystery with his sisters Girl Chat sleepover backpack and walkie talkie. It seems he spends the entire book "dealing" with his annoying little sister, who seems to have her head a little straighter than Joe, but even with her help, will he solve the mystery? Will anyone find out about his Captain Wink Wink toothbrush? Read it and find out!

Delightfully irreverent, something quite nice in a kids story! This one was for both our Boy (6) and our Girl (8) and we think it's just the right amount of silly! To my way of thinking, there was an excessive amount of VERY descriptive passages...I think it's overkill from an adult perspective, BUT I think this is great for kids, especially emerging writers. I'm constantly admonishing girl to add in more detail and use more descriptive words, with Joe Sherlock, I can pull countless examples from this book. So for that alone it's worth it. From the perspective of solving a mystery, I think this was a semi-miss...the clues were not all there, so it would be hard for a reader at this level to figure out who done it ahead of the detective...but it's funny, imaginative and fast paced! I'd recommend it for reader's grades 3-7 (read aloud) and 8-10 (or so for self-readers)...but probably would be most appreciated and enjoyed from the grade range listed on Amazon. I give it a A...it was just fun! My favorite line:

"Mr. Asher is a chunky, bald man who combs the wispy hair from the back of his head up and over his bald spot, which he then swirls around and around into a sort of hairy cinnamon roll."

...this one actually made me laugh out loud...ok, so maybe I'm lame, but I thought this book was funny and a good quick read for kids!

A Great New Series for Kids AND Parents!

My 5 year old son and his father read chapters from Kid Detective every night. They've just started #3. They both enjoy them because they're not only funny, but also introduce new words (with definitions) and ideas. Keane also has illustrations on every page. My sons stays engaged with the story and always wants more! Keane tells a great mystery!

(by Spenceer age 8) I liked the book because I wasn't able to figure it out myself. It is funny how Joe Sherlock's sisters annoy him so much. I think it is funny how he has to use all of his sister's girly stuff for his investigation. I cannot wait for more of the Joe Sherlock books!!!

I love joe sherlock

Joe Sherlock is a nine year old fourth grader that thinks he is Sherlock Holmes. When he is solving his mystery he has a few problems, so he thinks of what the famous detecive would do. I love the way Mr. Asher asks Sherlock,"Is that a girl chat sleepover backpack?" And the way he loves Insector Wink-Wink.
