What has drawn us all to Brian Lumley is here in smaller portions. Having read all of the Necroscope series (most more than once) I wasn't sure if this book of shorts would do him justice. I was wrong. If you long for more of this author this is a fine way to get it.

I think it's time I delved into Titus Crow. He promises to be another great character.

As good as the rest...

Anyone who loves Lumley will love this book. With some hard to find short stories thsi book really delivers the goods. The deeper look into Titus Crow's past what made me buy this book and I was not disapointed. The short stories about Keogh are in fine form. The stories about Hero and Eldin are a pleasent surprise for those of us who love the Dreamland series and were left wanting more. If you are versed in all of the characters' backgrounds you will enjoy the deeper plundge, and for those who are just buying it for one of the characters then maybe this book will spark your intrest in the other heroes of the Lumley Mythos.

A taste of the great

This book was excellent. As a long time fan of Lumleys living in the states it introduced me to Hero, a series not on any of our book shelves. I couldn't put it down. When Lumley writes he wisks me away to lands of fantasy, horror and fun. As a writer myself I could only wish to acheive his level of realism in fantasy. Any fan of horror would drool over this and be hooked on Harry and Hero.

For fans of Lumley and anyone who enjoys Lovecraft

HARRY KEOGH: NECROSCOPE AND OTHER WEIRD HEROES is clearly for fans of Brian Lumley and anyone who enjoys Lovecraft. The collection contains eight long shorts/novellas starring four of Mr. Lumley's top guns. Three stories feature Titus Crow (psychic detective). David Hero and Eldin the Wanderer (Agents of the king) travel in Dreamlands in two contributions. Finally the title character stars in three new stories not previously published.

Each tale is well written displaying Mr. Lumley's skill at world building in a realm of horror rarely seen as descriptive; my heart still remains in my throat as a power failure occurred in the middle of a Keogh thriller. This reviewer read the book by lead character, meaning first Crow's trio, then the Hero-Eldin duo and finally the three Keogh stories over several days. Thus savoring a strong collection.

This is a fun-to-read, informative book full of interesting ghost stories. It can be used for informative, historical reading or for pure enjoyment.

After reading "Haunted Texas Vacations," my husband and I set out on our own ghost hunts in San Antonio, Spring and Jefferson and, I'm happy to report, we were privileged to experience first-hand a couple of unexplained phenomena mentioned in Ms. Farwell's writings because we knew exactly where to look.

Please give us more, Ms. Farwell!

This was my first really good book on haunted places. Anyone who is interested in local (Texas) ghost stories just has to read this one. I am planning my vacation around some of these towns and I am very excited.

This book is so well written that it held my interest for hours and gave me quite a chill more than a couple of times. The way the author put Texas in sections made it even easier to find a particular area I was looking for. Although I was looking for San Antonio, I found there are all kinds of interesting places in between and beyond. I intend to eventually visit them all.

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in our haunted history or just a great ghost story.

"Remember, ghosts were people too" says Farwell and what a cast: frantically romantic lovers, dashing Edwardian gentlemen, poor pirates, southern belles, war heroes, war victims, and even--well, what other state would his ghost inhabit! --John Wayne...

What great stories!

For example: the story of the 19 year old boy who fell in love with a beautiful girl in the 1860's...she had not only the beauty but also the warmth of a diamond. He proposed, she declined, he shot himself...in a back room of the Texas Governor's Mansion. The boy was the governor's nephew; and shortly thereafter, the family was forced to flee because of the fall of the Confederacy. They simply shut the bedroom door on the blood, guts, fingers and toes. The mess remained until the next governor moved in. Witnesses say the poor spirit remains, still in love, still sobbing late in the night...

Cocktail-party-chatter-sized facts are also included: The average sighting is 15 seconds, ghosts usually have no sense of time, most ghosts are heard, felt, etc. but only rarely seen.

If you like a good story, you'll love Texas Haunted Vacations...Fun! You might not fall asleep so easily tonight, but who wants to sleep when spirits are walking the hallway and shaking the china...

Dont leave this plane without it.

This is a great book to take on a trip to add that extra worldly dimension to your vacation. The book divides Texas into six regions. Then the specific location is discussed there are key symbols to let you know about such things as "Ghostly Missions and Churches" or "Most Haunted Location." It includes such subjects as "What is a Ghost?", " Ghost Hunting", and "A ghost Hunter's Tool Kit."

A place that is eerie enough with out being haunted is the Monahans Sandhills state Park. When you get out the dunes they seem to go on forever. However I sounds like the ghosts are more interested in the "Visitors' center building".

"According to legend the visitors' center a Monahans Sandhills State Park is built on the sight of a nineteenth-center Comanche burial ground. In 1967, two boys digging neat the building unearthed a skeleton, lending credence to the ghost story."

An excellent atmospheric Hellboy romp, as usual. For a concept or even character design when you first see it, somehow it works. It looks ridiculous, sounds like it would be silly, but it is not. Hellboy is exactly the kind of guy you would love to buy a beer for (hopefully out of range of any monsters). Mignola's style just fits.

The last collection(for now..sigh) ends with a big bang as Mike Mignola continues to delve into the history of those pesky nazis. As Indiana Jones would say,I hate those guys! Just as Steven Spielberg understands and honors all those pulp stories in his Indiana Jones movies(along with another guy who understands the pulps, George Lucas) Mr. Mignola brings out Lobster Johnson! to combat the Nazi nastiness! If all comics were even a quarter this well produced I'd be broke! Good news for Hellboy fans, the fun continues in Weird Tales and B.R.P.D!

With his impeccible voice, M.G. Miller spins an iniquitous tale of voodoo, passion and madness set in the dark and haunted Louisiana of the late 1800's. Miller's characters fairly ooze from the pages like Black Bayou mud. Every time you catch your breath, something jabs a bony finger in your ribs and beckons you to follow. You'll wonder if this novel was written in blood.

What can you say about a book that creates images that follow you into the night. Like a spider, M.G. spins a web that settles imperceptibly around you and doesn't let you go. He captured the mystery of the swamp and created a story that explains why you should feel uneasy when you venture into its inviting depths. Vivid descriptions make the story come alive. No longer will I seek out abandoned plantation houses without thinking of Vanessa and her story.

Wow! This isn't your mother's horror story. "Tales from the Crypt" will seem tame after you read this bolt of lightning. Not for the faint of heart or the prudish, but it's a visit to the darkest of the dark side. Not that it matters to most horror aficionados, but the language and usage are higher class than you find in most popular fiction. I don't mean it's hard to read. It's just a better read. I can't wait for Miller's next book.

A Wild Ride

Review Date: 2007-11-25
A Highly Placed Source is a whirling satire. The ride starts with an ordinary moment and swells (ahem) into a giant thunderstorm that zings lighnting bolts at all deserving targets -- Big Media, Big Church, and Pretentious Politicians. Using a mix of sex and schools as its flashpoint (like "The Abstinence Teacher"), A Highly Placed Source plunders the material for humor, exposing self-righteousness and opportunism at every turn. On the day I was finishing this book, the local newspaper published a story about a 13-year-old girl who had prayed to God for guidance on another hot-button issue and had immediately launched a political campaign based on "his" advice and guidance. Somewhere, Michelle Dally must be laughing -- and wondering whether Gail Abernathy isn't about to be sent out another crazy assignment. A Highly Placed Source takes nothing seriously. The skewers are many and they are all piping hot. (Full disclosure here that Michelle Dally is somebody I met recently through writing friends in Denver.)

In A Highly Placed Source, 12-year old Peter Banks declares that God has spoken to him and revealed that a Congresswoman's staffer and a hospice nurse will witness miracles. What ensues is a wild ride through the worlds of politics, the media and religion. Dally takes you deep inside these institutions, then skewers their hypocrisy and self-importance with intelligent glee, reminding me a lot of Tom Wolfe's novels (Bonfire of the Vanities, A Man in Full, I Am Charlotte Simmons--take your pick). Ultimately, she makes the case for infusing society with compassion and understanding. This book made me laugh out loud, and once I started it, I couldn't put it down.

A great read!

Review Date: 2007-11-12
This book made me laugh, it made me cry, and it made me think about what really constitutes a miracle.

It's a normal day at Rory Middle School until twelve-year-old Peter Banks finds himself caught between his raging hormones, a voyeuristic bully, and God. This smart and always-funny novel explores what happens when a young boy's earnest prayer turns a nation upside down. When Peter relays God's message that in just seven days miracles will occur to prove His existence, not one institution can resist jumping on the bandwagon. The orbiting worlds of media, religion, and politics collide, leaving everyone to question what faith really means. Biting social satire and characters to love are just part of Dally's whirlwind adventure.

A wickedly funny tale about media, religion and kids

Sharp satire and a winning story about newspaper reporter and a twelve-year old who makes national news and then suffers the consequences. If you ever wanted to know how a 'big story' gets played out on TV and in national newspapers, this is a fun way to find out - but be forewarned, it's not pretty. Both Gail, the reporter, and Peter, the kid at the center of the story, are likable and real. The story includes fictional political and media leaders in Denver that make you wonder who Dally was remembering while she wrote - this would make a great holiday gift for a Coloradan who's interested in politics. A great book that reads fast because you can't put it down.

The Homecoming is a great read for those of you who, like me, are bored with the same old genre plots. This one covers all the ground without being predictable and winds up to one hell of an ending. Walk on the darkside with Samuel Blue or fret over the safety of "sweet Darby" whatever your into - this'll keep you coming back for more.

However, after reading it, I saw the 1944 movie "Gaslight", and I believe the author of this book just watched that movie and totally STOLE THE PLOT. This is a completely absorbing page- turner with fascinating historical details. I thought Emily, the protagonist, was particularly interesting. Many authors label their protagonists, giving them a certain type of personality that isn't very common among teenagers. Emily is normal in every way, yet she shines. This is because she is very realistic and likable. Though she is a bit downtrodden from major changes in her life (a divorce, a new home, and a new school), she doesn't whine excessively, nor does she take it unrealistically with no complaints. I was also very pleased with the ending. There was no corny parting scene where Emily's seventeenth century friends go back to their time through a swirling vortex with tears in their eyes.

I immensely enjoyed reading this book. My only complaint concerns the title. Although the book's title is The House on Hound Hill, it was originally published in Britain as Here Comes a Candle to Light You To Bed. I think the original title is much more intriguing and should not have been changed.

Everything from visions of ghosts repeating the cycle of their tragic lives, the protagonist becoming lost in the past, the past intertwining with the present, plague pits, and death make this story a favorite of mine.

The House on Hound Hill by Maggie Prince was a very good book. it had suspense, adventure, and history. it is about a 16-year-old girl, Emily, and her experienceswith the Black Plague of 1665. She has just moved into an old house in a London neighborhood called Hound Hill. She starts seeing, hearing and even smalling things from the time of the Black Death. She was transported to 1665 several times. Then she begins getting stranhge symptoms. On one last trip to 1665, she learns more about the horrors of the Plague and her new acquaintances from the time. For this trip, she stays an unusually long time and, like the other times, she doesn't know how to get back.

Wow, this series is awesome. The Hunt is the second book of the series Year of the Cats. This series is very hard to find. If anyone who read L.J. Smith's books, will like this series too. Because it is kind of like that. This series contain horror, adventures, and romance. 5 Stars and 2 thumbs up!

Like a good scare in the middle of the night?(Make sure it is on a school night too)! The Hunt is the perfect book for some-one who likes that little bit unpridictableness of what happens with the nature of the characters. For example: Character one.Alex Sarandon. Original nature:Charming , sweet , romantic. Secondary nature:Evil , unpridictible , dangerous.

See?Bye!

I started this series when I was 13 and 1/2 and I fell in love with it . Though I will add the 3rd book gets a little confusing . ( It also took me 2 years to find it ) I ended up finding it at the local libariy in Indiana ( I`am from CA.)Anyway the second book is the most importent in this 3 book series . This is where everything changes and true agendas are showen . Well most of them . It shows who Alex truly is. A cold , unremorseful , savage , self centered maniac. Who relishes using the gift for evil. Yet , you also see a different side of Holly. A young women with a gift of evil and fights it to protect the ones she loves. This book is such a dramtic turnig point in the series . It`s a must read and forgive me if I don`t make it sound like a great book . It is , there `s just so much you`ll find it`s hard to put in words.
