Perhaps it is Phipps' virtues as a painter that invigorate these poems with so much lush color and gorgeous visual detail.
Her poems are also full of music--her Caribbean lullabies and fierce stories. CROSSROADS AND UNHOLY WATER is an amazing
and mature debut!

Intruiging cookbook with a bit of history

This book is a must for any cook who loves to read cookbooks in their spare time. All of the recipes are straight-forward,
yet most of them are very unique combinations ie. walla-walla sweet onion jam, cheddar cheese soup with peppered bacon and
ale. Each page also has a bit of Northwest history and accompanying photos, which are quite enjoyable. As Seattle-ite I
can vouch that these recipes really do use locally available ingredients, but I think that cooks everywhere would enjoy and
adapt these recipes. Only drawback is that pictures and text are black and white only.

This is a wonderful book-rich with history and classic recipes! I grew up eating at Joe's on our annual trips to the Miami
area. The food and atmosphere were always memorable. I have especially enjoyed creating the salads, sides, and luscious
desserts that enhanced the stone crab experience in my own kitchen. This book is a must have for both the recipes and the
tales that have built the persona of Joe's Stone Crab.

On a visit to his friends the detectives Thomson and Thompson, Tintin recognizes a piece of paper torn from the label of a
can. Earlier in the day Snowy had found the can with the rest of the label attached on the street. The label shows a picture
of a red crab on a golden background and is evidence in an investigation into counterfeit money. Written on the back is the
name of the ship. When Tintin accompanies the detectives on a visit to the ship, he is kidnapped and held in the hold as
the ship leave port for an unknown destination.
This Tintin adventure is notable for the first appearance of Captain Haddock. He is a major repeat character in subsequent adventures, with cries of artificial profanity like "blistering barnacles". This book, unlike previous books in the series, has four pages in which a single frame fills a page, each showing a particularly dramatic or humorous moment in the story.

From Hoopers Island to the World

This eloquently written book is more than biography, it is an evocative social-study of one family's travel from a Chesapeake
Bay backwater to modernity. Brice and Shirley Phillips were born and raised on a remote island-promontory jutting into the
sea on the eastern side of Chesapeake Bay. They grew up in the crab-processing business. While preserving that, they gravitated
to the seafood restaurant business, one thing including much hard work led to another, and they prospered. Their son pioneered
crab processing in the Phillippines, Malaysia and mainland Asia, and the Phillips enterprise is now respected globally.
But the story is more than economic. Author Cathell depicts the Phillips as genuinely decent people, employers who valued their employees, treated them well, were reciprocated by loyalty in return, and this mutual benevolent synergy was very key to furthering the success of their business including abroad in Asia. The book is a sweet sociological portrait, too. Imagine grizzled old Hoopers Island watermen being transported to distant Asia, some of whom on their first plane rides, to exchange crab-harvesting experiences with counterparts there. That's depicted. Brice served in Europe during World War II while his young bride awaited back home and his letters to her are touching. Those are depicted too, especially Brice's descriptions of angst about prospectively being transferred to the Pacific Theater for the expected invasion of Japan in 1945. Great was the relief when the two atomic bombs ended the war, saving lives of many Americans and Japanese alike.
In sum, this book is a really good yarn as well as a time trip. Highly recommended.

History as a visual story

As a teacher of language arts and interdisciplinary studies, I recommend Bentley Boyd's work to kids 10 and up. He developed
a strong graphic sense over his years as a long-time political and educational cartoonist (full disclosure: I have known Bentley
for many years, and saw early versions of many of the narratives that ended up in the Chester the Crab series). This makes
his work visually stimulating for readers of all ages.
This series started as an educational tool aligned with Virginia's content-focused "Standards of Learning". The current educational environment promotes a focus on real content; a school that wants its students to learn plenty of real content could do no better than to connect with this author/artist's work. Each page is a stand-alone piece of history that addresses a clear content objective, and each book tells a handful of stories that put years of history in context. The color is great, the layout engaging, and the subtle references add layers of information and humor.
One note: even though this is a series for students, Bentley is unafraid to address sensitive issues and unwilling to gloss over the unpleasant aspects of history. "Heroic figures" are not larger-than-life, and their flaws are not airbrushed away. This is history and art from someone who loves and respects both.

These comics are enjoyed by our entire family. Our 10 year old son can't seem to put them down as the illustrations and content
are clever and entertaining. We love how Bently Boyd brings history to life in a fun, creative and easy reading style. After
my son is finished reading he can't wait to share what he read with the entire family. We have acquired the entire set of
Chester Comix with Content Series and love them all. These make a GREAT gift for anyone of any age or even for teachers as
they are an awesome learning tool. A gift that keeps giving. This is a definate must have for the entire family. ENJOY!
