I had read a review that complained about Bullard only using visible characteristics but for quick ids it is a good reference to have. It is a great addition to my collection. Short and easy taxanomic keys. I also have Paul Sandifers Decapods of the Chesapeake Bay and the two go well together. Bullard draws from Sandifer in his book but also has other good drawings for identification. For most species there are drawings for each zoea life stage.

This Tintin is one of the best ever. A timeless plot mixed with humor and non-stop adventure. The french version is the best because french is Herge's first language and it is simple and easy to read (Im learning french now so I know!)

Counterfeiters and drug smugglers unmasked

Review Date: 2004-11-26
On a visit to his friends the detectives Thomson and Thompson, Tintin recognizes a piece of paper torn from the label of a can. Earlier in the day Snowy had found the can with the rest of the label attached on the street. The label shows a picture of a red crab on a golden background and is evidence in an investigation into counterfeit money. Written on the back is the name of the ship. When Tintin accompanies the detectives on a visit to the ship, he is kidnapped and held in the hold as the ship leave port for an unknown destination.

This Tintin adventure is notable for the first appearance of Captain Haddock. He is a major repeat character in subsequent adventures, with cries of artificial profanity like "blistering barnacles". This book, unlike previous books in the series, has four pages in which a single frame fills a page, each showing a particularly dramatic or humorous moment in the story.

If you are reading this to help learn French, Tintin comics are good for reading at a French 2 level. There are a lot of words that aren't basic vocabulary but it is still easy to follow the story because the writing and pictures tend to reinforce each other. This particular one isn't so good for studying because the captain, a major character, spends most of this one drunk and speaking with a severe stutter.

Baggott Writes It All

Julianna Baggott writes outstanding fiction (for adults amd children) but she was first and still an outstanding poet. This one speaks from the voices of women from Lizzie Borden to Mary Todd Lincoln - and each poem is true to the speaker while touching the reader who may have nothing in common with the woman.

First, let me say that I discovered Julianna Baggott in Third Coast - a journal out of Michigan. I fell in love. I went on a search to learn more about my "new" favorite poet and discovered the lizzie borden book and immediately ordered it. I devoured it upon arrival and called my three best friends, (also poets) and suggested that they buy it, too. I read a couple of pieces over the phone to my poet friends and they orderd the book, too. The work is simply alive, though the majority of the women the poems are about are not. Norman Rockwell's wife, Helen Keller, Monica Lewinsky and of course Lizzie Borden are present among others. The poems are biographical fiction - Baggott paints tender, raw, angry, forlorn portraits. These poems are written so well that they ring true...it's easy to forget that they are poems and not pieces of autobiography. There is technique here, and patience with word choice and image. The closing piece, about Helen Keller, is worth the price of the book alone. I cannot recommend this book enough... I recommend it to everyone I talk to who's looking for a new poet (or not!).

This is a valuable reference for anyone who lived and eats from the Pacific North West Marine environment. The descriptions are consise and well written. The colour plates are clear and make identification fairly easy.
It is well organized and will probably be on my Christmas shopping list for a few select friends.

Complete and concise with excellent photography.

I knew Greg when I was a grad student at Western Washington U. while he was still writing this book and photographing subjects. I had many lengthy conversations with him then and would consider him an authority on west coast crustaceans. Now I work at the Humboldt State U. Marine Lab and frequently use his book as a reference (when students aren't borrowing it!). It is easy to use and more up-to-date with the latest taxonomic changes than many other books on the subject.

I saw the book and immediately wanted to buy this little crab and his three friends. After I get my own set, I'll be buying some more for gifts.

The format of the book will catch your eye first. It's in the 3D shape of a crab. With each of the beautifully-illustrated, sturdy cardboard "pages" you progress from the top of his shell, to his eyeballs on stalks, to the tips of his claws, etc. It is small enough to fit nicely into a purse. It would also be a great conversation piece for any adult who collects these animals or has a beach house.

But this book is not just a cute animal toy. The story itself is adorable. The little crab, trying to discover how many legs HE has, asks a variety other sea friends how many legs THEY have--a sneaky introduction to mathematics, not to mention marine biology.

My baby loves this book!

I bought this book for my baby when he was only about 4 months old and he absolutely loves it. It was his first book!

The glitter illustrations obviously attracts their attention and feels great when they run their hands over the pictures. Also some of the pictures use collage photographs which gives it a realistic look - my son loves the rock pool pictures especially.

The length of the book is perfect to read to a baby that's mostly more interested in crawling off and exploring. The text is fun to read and has a nice rhythm to it.

I highly recommend this book to parents. Your baby will love it:-)

A glittery experience

This is one of those books that you see in the bookstore and think...mmmm - "a bit gimmicky". It even comes with a sticker that states "there's glitter on every page". Now this is a sure-fire way to catch your little one's attention but in my experience this type of book is not destined to become a classic in children's literature. Having said that however, I reluctantly bought this book as my two year old appeared to have fallen in love with it. It turns out that my almost five year old son LOVES it. It's a very tactile experience reading it and the pictures are lovely (same illustrator as Aaaaaaargh! Spider!). You just can't help running your hands over all the glittery pictures. The text is nothing to write home about but the rhymes slip off the tongue easily enough.

It tells the tale of a little hermit crab who is none too pleased about sharing his shell with an anenome and a bristle worm. This storyline has of course been churned out many times before but it still provides a good opportunity to discuss the concepts of sharing and symbiotic/commensal relationships etc. with your child. As long as you don't expect anything too original, this book makes a nice little addition to any child's library (particularly for a girl who will no doubt love the glitter which IS very well done).

The best book you're not reading.

Readers know. We like to find new authors before everyone else. W.R. Marshall is just such an author. Funny, sarcastic, then striking straight for your heart with a sentence or phrase that just freezes you with its beauty, simplicity, and perfect explaination of a childhood moment. I'd like to be able to say The Sideways Dance of Blue Crabs is like this book or that. To its credit, I can't. (Of course, the same goes for Catch-22, Franny & Zoey, Slaughterhouse 5, etc., so not exactly bad company.) No, you can't predict where the book is going. No, you can't figure it out. No, Marshall won't spoon feed you. Yipes, you might have to think. And, isn't it about time!
Readers know. So you can start with his first book, and when others jump on the Marshall bandwagon in years to come, you can smile and say, "Yeah, yeah, yeah, been reading him for years."

If J. D. Salinger and Tom Robbins had a love child, he would write a book like this. W. R. Marshall has brought whimsy back to fiction. Like "Catcher in the Rye", the tone in "The Sideways Dance" is lighthearted and fun. But there is an undercurrent that reflects the often serious nature of childhood.

This book was great motivation to get my 7 year old to read! She loves watching Spongebob Square Pants and remembered watching this episode on TV. The book had a very funny story and my daughter laughed a lot. I think it is a wonderful book for fans of Spongebob Square Pants, but maybe not for children who do not watch the show. I plan on purchasing more Spongebob books because they keep her so well entertained.

What a moving and inspiring poet! Ms. Khanna's literary power is her ability to majestically carry you right with her on her literal and revelatory journey. She successfully captures the reader in her struggle for understanding of her Indian and American backgrounds. I felt priveleged to have privy to her thoughts, and hope for a time again to enjoy her savory prose.
What do we have to look forward to, Van?!
Thanks.
