No one believes me when I say the best seafood restaurant I have ever been to was Bob Chinn's in Wheeling, IL (just outside of Chicago). I was in the Navy and traveled a great deal always savoring the foods. When I was stationed at NTC Geat Lakes, I was introduced to Bob Chinn's and my wife and I made at least a bi-weekly visit there. It wasn't uncommon to arrive 2 hours after opening and find yourself with a three hour wait.
Now we live in VA and remember the days of the greatest seafood ever. You have no idea how estatic I was to find this cookbook searching on the web for similar recipes I have tasted at Bob's.
Even if you have never eaten at the restaurant, this cookbook will make your freinds believe you are the greatest seafood cook in history.
Thanks Bob.

For those of us lucky enough to have spent many a night "chowing down" on the out-of-this-world seafood and garlic rolls at this 600 seat suburban Chicago institution, what a THRILL it's been to own a cookbook with all the restaurant's best recipes! While other cookbooks from well-known restaurants omit favorites, due to secret/family recipes, etc... this book spills them all. From my all-time fave, sauteed scallops (in sherry-lemon sauce!!), to the irresistible garlic rolls, it's all here, along with great asides/behind-the-scenes talk and some nice photos. Though slightly simplified for home cooking, the recipes are absolutely comparable to "being there." After regular trips to Chinn's for years, I now live 2 states away, yet can still "savor the flavor" - and without the 2 hour wait. Highly recommended, especially for those who've been lucky enough to experience Bob Chinn's in person.

We have been reading this book, on and off for three years now and Felix and his parents still havent tired of it. It really is a wonderful book and it is a shame that most of his books are out of print. The pop-ups are brialliant - they really are sturdy, although Felix has ripped some of them I was able to tape them.

As the title suggests, stories are a central theme in this collection. Katz is especially skilled at taking a fresh approach to historical places, figures, and events. One especially memorable poem, "A Nation So Ignorant of Itself" deals with John Wesley Powell exploring the Grand Canyon, the experience itself and afterwards how terrible it must be to discuss what he has seen with others, that they can never see or understand. Other poems are incredibly location based, like "In the Old Jewish Cemetery, Prague" which focuses on a crowded cemetery where tombstones are placed on top of each other and look "like molars in a small jaw."

The poetry of Joy Katz blends the art of a fabulator with the art of a sculptor to create a sensual and impressive autobiographical poetry in Fabulae. Her poetry ranges from the comedic to the philosophical and weaves a linguistic delight through her remarkable and memorable use of word rhythms and imagery. The Word Wife: When the silence between them/was a new thing--a morning in a garden--/he took a pencil and sketched her feed./He matched her ankles/in crisp lines falling like wisps/of hair from a boy's first cut./The quick strokes were moths/lighting her body, the background/white, like the word wife, first light/touching the violet's hair. The new word/husband, hush of a car up the street./Pigeons swallowing their tongues beneath the eaves.

Grasper is a young crab who says he ''feels as though he is going to burst''. The other crabs tell him he is going through the process of molting for the first time. ''Be careful Grasper,'' they tell him ''for when your shell is soft, so is your heart, and that is a dangerous life''. Grasper ventures above the rocks of his home and into a lush coral reef where he discovers a world full of hidden wonders. Lewis's intricately detailed illustrations are enough to take one's breath away. They capture that ''underwater feel'' reminiscent of Grame Base's classic picture book THE SIGHN OF THE SEA HORSE. GRASPER is a beautiful parable about how an open mind can achieve miracles.

I really enjoyed this book! What makes it even more special is that I got to visit with the author, Andie Weathers, at Christmas time. She graciosly spent the time discussing the whole process of writing and publishing a book. I highly recommend this picture book for any child who wants to learn about sea life and Charleston, South Carolina!...I thoroughly enjoyed it and learned a lot from it. I look forward to Andie's next book!

This beautifully illustrated book is an engaging tale about a little hermit crab that travels to various real-life destinations looking for a new shell (because Hermy has outgrown his old shell). Like most children, my kids (ages 8, 6 and 4) love the beach, and they were captivated by the Hermy story and illustrations. The main character is a hermit crab, but the cast of characters includes some other ocean favorites, such as a sand dollar and a sea horse. The lighthouse and shipwreck captured my son's attention. The innovative format includes a map of Hermy's journey, and an informative "Hermy's Beachside Glossary" that answered many questions that my children had. There is also a detailed write-up of the biology of the hermit crab included at the end, which provided enrichment for my 8-year-old and me! My children are avid readers and it is often difficult to find new books that capture their attention---Hermy the Hermit Crab was a welcome, rare find. We have given this book to other kids for a birthay present, and it was a winner.

The book is well written for children of all ages. It is a wonderful lesson about the creatures of the sea. While it captures the true essence of the sea life of the South Carolina coast, it is a book that anyone across the country will enjoy and relate to.
However, it is the incredible illustrations that make the book come to life. The animated creatures appear human-like but do not lose their sea creature-like quality. The vivid colors and attention to detail will capture the attention of the reader (young or old) for hours.

I loved the storyline of this book in addition to the beautiful illustrations. After reading it, I decided to try crabbing with my two children. Watching the joy on their faces as they pulled up crabs from the ocean was priceless. We pulled up about 20 crabs in less than 1/2 an hour. We have read this book over and over. This book will last for many years as a great summer read in addition to an anticipatory story for summer to come.

I know this book is out of print but sometimes it is available on the secondary market.
This is an amazing book. The illustrations are beautiful and the story is simple. It's about a hermit crab who outgrows his shell and goes looking for a new one.
My kids loved this when they were babies and they still love it...at six and three years old. I love it too.
Helen Ward is an amazing illustrator and she identifies all of the creatures pictured in this book and tells a little bit about them.
It's educational and beautiful.

The illustrations are what caught my eye with this book about a hermit crab's quest to find a new home. The cover shown above gives you an idea of the detailed artwork within. At the end of the book are line drawings explaining the various plants and animals that live in a coral reef. My 7 yo daughter has been enjoying this book for a couple of years now. A nice simple story.
A very highly recommended story of problem-solving & change.
