Counterfeiters and drug smugglers unmasked
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2004-11-26
On a visit to his friends the detectives Thomson and Thompson, Tintin recognizes a piece of paper torn from the label of a can. Earlier in the day Snowy had found the can with the rest of the label attached on the street. The label shows a picture of a red crab on a golden background and is evidence in an investigation into counterfeit money. Written on the back is the name of the ship. When Tintin accompanies the detectives on a visit to the ship, he is kidnapped and held in the hold as the ship leave port for an unknown destination.

This Tintin adventure is notable for the first appearance of Captain Haddock. He is a major repeat character in subsequent adventures, with cries of artificial profanity like "blistering barnacles". This book, unlike previous books in the series, has four pages in which a single frame fills a page, each showing a particularly dramatic or humorous moment in the story.

If you are reading this to help learn Italian, Tintin comics are good for reading at a Italian 2 level. There are a lot of words that aren't basic vocabulary but it is still easy to follow the story because the writing and pictures tend to reinforce each other. This particular one isn't so good for studying because the captain, a major character, spends most of this one drunk and speaking with a severe stutter.

If you are reading this to help learn French, Tintin comics are good for reading at a French 2 level. There are a lot of words that aren't basic vocabulary but it is still easy to follow the story because the writing and pictures tend to reinforce each other. The video can help in picking up pronounciation, but must be weighed against the extra cost and the potential to buy multiple comic books instead. This particular one isn't so good for studying because the captain, a major character, spends most of this one drunk and speaking with a severe stutter.

We bought all of the Chadwick books years ago when our grandkids were young. Somehow (of course, nobody knows how it happened), "Meet Chadwick" got lost in the shuffle. The oldest grandson wants the set to pass on to his kids. We were glad to be able to replace it still.
Thanks for having it! It arrived quickly and in fine condition.

I like this book because it introduces the ocean as a poetic and playful place to explore. My kids like this book because they get really excited when they find the ocean animals in the pictures that are listed in the text. Beautifully simple. One of my current favorites.

My daughter (age 4) loves this book and could "read" it after only a few times. As a math teacher, I love that it has multiple representations of numbers, and introduces the concept of multiplication. The pictures are great and the concept of this book is truly novel. A must read.

Pagoo Lives On!

Review Date: 2004-08-28
Pagoo is an odd name and an intrigueing title. This is perhaps what first drew me to the book as a fourth grader way back in 1963. Not only is this an engaging story of little hermit crab's life under the sea, it is a scientifically factual lesson on a hermit crab's life cycle and the trials that life forms must overcome to live a full life. A good lesson for all youngsters. Pagoo is short for Pagurus, the species name for hermit crabs. I read this book many time over during my years in elementary school and think it began a lifelong fascination in life science (my major in college). I give this book 5 stars and recommend it to everyone with an elementary school age child.

Elton Glaser's new work presents a rich gumbo of precise observation and down-home longing. Having known Mr. Glaser and his writing for 35 years, I find these poems to be among his finest to date. His potent blend of erudition and Louisiana vernacular creates humor, perception, and profound connection with ourselves. I recommend his work highly to readers who appreciate a master of language, intellect, and emotion in verse.

America's favorite food in the opening decade of the 21st century isn't the hot dog or mom's apple pie -- it is the hamburger

America's favorite food in the opening decade of the 21st century isn't the hot dog or mom's apple pie -- it is the hamburger in all its variations and diversities! The latest addition to the popular Wiley cookbook series 'Recipe of the Week', veteran cookbook author and hamburger authority Sally Sampson has compiled 52 'kitchen cook friendly' recipes that will provide a different style hamburger every week of the year. Accompanied by the superb full-page sized color photography of Yunnee Kim, each recipe notes how many burgers it will make, a brief word of personalized introduction by Sally, the ingredients for the condiment and the burger it goes on, easy and well presented step-by-step instructions for its preparation. From Beef Burgers with Soy and Lemon; to Curried Chicken Burgers with Chutney; to Spicy Chipotle Turkey Burgers; to Lamb Burgers with Herbs; to Cuban Style Pork Burger, to Caramelized Onion and Chickpea Burgers, this is a fabulous collection of gourmet quality burgers that goes quantum leaps beyond anything a fast food join can turn out. "Recipe Of The Week: Burgers" is a welcome addition to any personal, family, or community specialty cookbook collection. Also very highly recommended are two earlier Wiley cookbook collections by Sally Sampson: "Recipe of The Week: Kabobs" and "Recipe Of The Week: Cookies"!

I have used Chester successfully in my 4th grade classroom for years, and he never fails to capture the attention of my students, even my reluctant ones! I highly recommend Chester and all his adventures to history lovers of all ages. Boyd has an uncanny ability to uniquely illustrate historical issues using Chester and his friends which is fun and entertaining to read.
