I've read Tulliver's Tunnel to the 4- and 5-year-olds in the preschool where I teach. They love this story of a young rabbit leaving home because he doesn't want to wash his face. Children can easily relate to Tulliver's insistence on doing things his own way. He meets other animals as he travels across a field to find a place to dig his own burrow. The little bunny gets quite muddy and hungry as he digs, and his new burrow doesn't feel very homey but he spends the night in it. Tulliver is in for a surprise when he wakes up the next morning. The story gives a positive message without being preachy. The illustrations are warm and engaging, as is the love between Tulliver and his mom.

The mischief baby

What a shame that this totally engaging title is out of print. Mrs. Fitzwarren takes her unwieldy children on a new outing on each page--to tea, for ice cream, to the beach. Someone always loses patience with the kids--sometimes Mrs. Fitzwarren herself--and the baby always gets lost. Children love finding the lost baby, whose ears pop up in the most unexpected places--in the teapot, in the trash can, in a sand castle, nowhere, in Mrs. Fitzwarren's handbag, and finally, fast asleep. Our children memorized this book, and ended up reading it to us. They never tired of finding the baby, or calling out the places he was lost. Our copy is falling apart. If you find one, treat your family to it. You won't be sorry. Alyssa A. Lappen

My kids now get the same stories I had

My father used to read us Uncle Wiggly. We loved all of the stories.
These are great bedtime stories for the little ones.
They are written in a fun odd way, I'm not quite sure how to describe it,
perhaps "old english", but the kids understand it enough to follow along.

The world that the funky old rabbit lives in is wonderfully described. You'll picture
it perfectly after the first few stories.

Delightful, interactive book for toddlers

Initially, in our home, this book was called the "scary bunny book," as the pop sound with its accompanying "ding!" startled my 12-month-old daughter. Once the jack-in-the-action was no longer a surprise, this book quickly became her favorite.

It has sweet, colorful pictures, and a button which can be pushed on every page, causing the nicely-made plush little bunny to pop up. It is a short, fun book, perfect for the 1-2 year age range (not for ages 4-8, as recommended in the "official" review.) Also contrary to the "official" review of this book, the main character in this book is a girl bunny, not a boy bunny. She wears a pink shirt, and is referred to as "she" and "her."

Very fun book -Bonus, if you're a veg*n parent!!

Veggie Soup is a great book - it's true that the prose is not Dr. Suess, but it's a very entertaining read. And considering the myriad of badly written children's books out there, it is my opinion that (for literary's sake) this book exceeds the less-than-stellar editorial reviews above. Miss Bun starts to make a soup (her grandmother's veggie soup recipe) for an impending dinner party comprised of various animal guests. Her guests arrive one by one and bring their own *interesting* contributions to her soup. She tries to accomodate everyone and the soup ends up being horrible. She re-makes the soup, this time following her grandmother's recipe without any additions. Everyone agrees that the soup is delicious. The middle of the story is repetitive with only the animal and extra ingredient changing (which works well in this age range, in my opinion). Your child will delight in saying "Eww!! The Crow wants to add that??!!" And, if you haven't already guessed, this is a gem for vegetarian parents. The recipe that Miss Bunn is cooking is included at the end so that you can make it with your child. And, for those of you looking for the moral? Well, I suppose it could be "You can't always please everyone" (and honor your grandmother's soup recipe at the same time) You could very easily find yourself having this discussion: "Well, what should've Miss Bunn done?" "Stay true to herself and made the soup as she wanted to and asked her guests to bring their contributions as a separate featured dish?"...or perhaps another solution? The cut-out illustrations are also delightful and unique. You won't be disappointed with this book.
