A great learning experience with a smooth ryming rythm and nice illustrationsReview Date: 2007-06-26
This simple concept is something that a suprising amount of childrens' books lack. It is good for two reasons. It helps them put words to pictures, and it helps them learn to read. The book is for children that are 4-8, but it's ability to help children match the verbal sounds of words to pictures makes it appropriate for infants as well.
The learning potential of the book is enhanced by the rythm of the words. The book's sentences ryme and procede in a rythm that makes the book more enjoyable for your child. My baby is noticeably delighted whenever he sees that we are about to read this book.
It is highly recommended.
Gorgeous illustrations!Review Date: 2006-06-24
I'm a little surprised that I didn't notice anyone else had harped on its beautiful cover. The cover is absolutely beautiful with its its pretty sea-mint green background and wonderful illustrations. I always thought the boy's eyes looked more like they belonged to the rabbit...they're huge!
To sum it up, it's a cute story about eyes!

Favorite bookReview Date: 2006-07-10
I don't know how long it's going to last, but it's been at least 3 weeks that we read this book a couple of time every day.
She knows every word in it. And she loves the fun sounds I make( for Moose and to show the expression of P.J. when he tried to live with the skunks)
I don't know how deep she can understand it right now, but it's fun to read and our whole family enjoys it, bacause at least once a day my daughter asks everyone to listen to it.
I'm sure that it will be a nice book for early readers, because of the repetitive words.

Mneumonics are a lifesaverReview Date: 2008-09-24
(By "mneumonics" I mean the memory tricks like on the product picture--the symbol for "ki" looks sort of like a key.)
Admittedly, some of these are a bit of a stretch, but I would have never sat down and thought up cute tricks like this myself, neither would I have guessed how strongly they improve memory retention. Huge difference! At a very leisurely pace I was able to recognize both Hiragana and Katakana after only a week. Regurgitating the symbols from the romanized syllables will of course take longer.
Great product.
Excellent start to learning the Japanese languageReview Date: 2008-07-28
Learning the Hiragana and Katakana characters takes perhaps an hour (each) with these cards. Once you have them figured out, it's only a matter of repetition to ensure you learn them in long-term memory. My method for using these cards was simple: pick up the first 5 cards, and flash them until you have those cards memorized. Then add 5 more cards and flash all 10. Keep adding cards in sets of 5 until you have the whole deck of either Hiragana or Katakana memorized. While doing this, I think it's important that you speak each character out loud, rather than in your head. Ultimately, if you are learning Japanese you are probably learning to speak it, and speaking each character now will make learning and speaking full words much easier. Kana are the building blocks of Japanese vocabulary, and I have found it much easier to pick up new words once I had these characters mastered.
You may need to find a source online to find the proper sounds for each character. While the examples provided on the cards work in most cases, I find them a little sketchy sometimes. I think this may be because of differences in how some words may be read in different English dialects. I suggest finding a secondary (audio) source online to provide the correct pronunciation of each character. Taking the effort now to get these sounds correct will prevent any possible problems later, such as incorrectly learning a sound and having to relearn it (along with every word which uses it!).
If you are self-teaching the Japanese language, these cards are a necessary first step.

Very effective tool in memorizing the Japanese kana.Review Date: 2008-03-30
With entertaining mnemonics provided by Michael Rowley, it only took me about one week of going through the cards for 20-30min a day to memorize all the kana... permanently. Each card includes four alternate style writings of the kana (very helpful for beginners), five sample words using that kana (translated on back), and stroke order. The cards themselves are high quality, easy to shuffle, and come in a robust two compartment box.
I do not normally write product reviews, but well-executed products like this deserve special treatment. If you have a desire to learn Japanese, do not yet have the kana memorized, and learn well by mnemonics, then these are the flash cards for you.
Awesome Cards!Review Date: 2008-01-25
Some reviews have said that the front of the card doesn't have the English meaning. Well that's just ridiculous because then you'll have to cover the English definition on the front and that will defeat the purpose of a flash card. Definitions always go on the back.
The audio in the beginning was a bit challenging because it's all in Japanese. With a little common sense you can understand it. The lady speaking says the card number, how to pronounce the character, then the line number, then the word. Simple no? Really, some people just want something to complain about. You have to learn to say the numbers in Japanese either way. Consider it a bonus.
There is no easy, fast way to learn another language. It takes time, patience, effort, and several resources. Using these cards is an efficient way to quickly learn Hiragana and Katakana as well as some vocabulary words.
Kanji is a bit more difficult for me. So this time I'm going to combine the audio, the card, and writing it to help me memorize them.

I love this thing. Simply put, it's like a chalk board but you write on it with water and a brush. So, you save on ink and paper, doing your part for the environment. =)
Thanks!

A Gem by Margaret Wise BrownReview Date: 2008-10-10
I wasn't sure what a "Big Little Golden Book" was, but I was pleasantly surprised to see what a lovely hard-backed book it is! It is quite sturdy, with no golden "tape" on the spine that peels off in time like the little ones. The illustrations are gorgeous--so clear and vivid. I like how the pictures fill up the whole page, on each and every page, even the front and back plates. Garth Williams portrays a world in bloom at spring, and a shiny glint in each animal's eye.
Margaret Wise Brown's other "Best Seller", is, of course, "Good-Night Moon". This one is probably more well known. I read it too my boys (now grown) very often when they were small. It is also very engaging for little ones. Brown has a knack to really understand how their little minds work and what gives them pleasure in stories.
I originally bought this book for my niece, but after I saw how wonderful it was, I ordered several more copies which I am keeping on hand as a perfect gift for baby showers and such. I am glad to hear from you people who grew up with this great story, how lucky you are!

Author Irene Livingston has published over a hundred children's stories and poems and lives in Vancouver, British Columbia. Brian Lies has illustrated over a dozen children's books and lives in Massachusetts.
Wow! Everyone in Finklehopper Frog's neighborhood seems to be involved in a fitness craze and have taken up jogging. Finklehopper Frog thinks exercise is a good idea and purchases a jazzy jogging suit with pink and purple dots. He gets dressed and hits the trails--hopping.
His confidence continues to diminish as other joggers snicker and laugh at him. He's feeling pretty awful until a bunny convinces him that his unique style is `a good thing' and he doesn't have to feel bad about it.
The message of Finklehopper Frog is a good one and is delivered in a manner that small children will easily understand. They will giggle at the pictures and get caught up in the verse. The illustrations are delightful and add to the story.
Armchair Interviews says: Children will enjoy Finklehopper Frog and want to read it again and again.

What a wonderful inspirational book!Review Date: 2008-06-13
The way Ms. Mead brings each rabbit to life in her writings makes a person feel that they are a part of each of the stories. I also loved the way that practical information for the lay-person is included after each of the stories.
At first I thought this was going to be a book that only adults could respond to, however once I began reading I realized that even young children could relate to the stories. This is a most have for anyone that is considering a rabbit as a pet, either as a healthy or as a rescued bun.
