This is one of Dr. Seuss's best for very young children. It is fun to read, and will surely make you giggle, especially when you see the pink underpants! The pictures are cute and we always pause to talk about them. There are few words and soon your toddler will have them memorized, and be reading along with you. The kids and I highly recommend this book.

We also recommend "Jamberry" by Bruce Degen and "There's a Wocket in my Pocket" by Dr. Seuss.s

A great learning experience with a smooth ryming rythm and nice illustrations

The thing I like best about this book is that the words and the pictures go together nicely. When the words say "Our eyes see bees," there is a picture of a lot of bees. So, from an educational perspective, you can have your child point to a picture while he or she hears the verbal description of the picture. It's helped my baby lean several words and phrases.

This simple concept is something that a suprising amount of childrens' books lack. It is good for two reasons. It helps them put words to pictures, and it helps them learn to read. The book is for children that are 4-8, but it's ability to help children match the verbal sounds of words to pictures makes it appropriate for infants as well.

The learning potential of the book is enhanced by the rythm of the words. The book's sentences ryme and procede in a rythm that makes the book more enjoyable for your child. My baby is noticeably delighted whenever he sees that we are about to read this book.

It is highly recommended.

This is the perfect book for the youngest of Seuss fans. It's a very simply book that starts out with a boy pointing to his eyes and saying what they are...and then to his bunny friend's eyes. The book goes on to explain what eyes do and what they help us see. I thought the pink underpants was a little strange, but they're just kids afterall!

I'm a little surprised that I didn't notice anyone else had harped on its beautiful cover. The cover is absolutely beautiful with its its pretty sea-mint green background and wonderful illustrations. I always thought the boy's eyes looked more like they belonged to the rabbit...they're huge!

To sum it up, it's a cute story about eyes!

My toddler son received this book as a gift for his first birthday. It came highly recommended from a teen friend who had treasured it as a childhood favorite. We weren't disappointed. I am not sure if it is the language, simple illustrations, or the premise but he never tires of It's Not Easy Being a Bunny. Not only do we recommend this book, we have already purchased it for other first birthday gifts. We give it an unequivocal A+ rating.

Great for 1.5-2 yr old boys...

My little guy doesn't have any patience for books except for this one and "Put Me in the Zoo". We have to read this to him almost 4 times a day, and he can finish the ends of the sentences. It's so fun to see him enjoy books, and hopefully it will introduce him to other books too. I highly recommend this one. It's fun, helps with animal recognition, etc..

Now it's my daughter's (3 years old) favorite book.
I don't know how long it's going to last, but it's been at least 3 weeks that we read this book a couple of time every day.
She knows every word in it. And she loves the fun sounds I make( for Moose and to show the expression of P.J. when he tried to live with the skunks)
I don't know how deep she can understand it right now, but it's fun to read and our whole family enjoys it, bacause at least once a day my daughter asks everyone to listen to it.
I'm sure that it will be a nice book for early readers, because of the repetitive words.

Mneumonics are a lifesaver

Review Date: 2008-09-24
I read the reviews before buying this product and I agree with most reviews--I love these cards. However, I am a little suprised that not that many people commented on how useful the mneumonics are.

(By "mneumonics" I mean the memory tricks like on the product picture--the symbol for "ki" looks sort of like a key.)

Admittedly, some of these are a bit of a stretch, but I would have never sat down and thought up cute tricks like this myself, neither would I have guessed how strongly they improve memory retention. Huge difference! At a very leisurely pace I was able to recognize both Hiragana and Katakana after only a week. Regurgitating the symbols from the romanized syllables will of course take longer.

Great product.

Excellent start to learning the Japanese language

These cards have been invaluable in getting me started on the right path to learning the Japanese language. I am a beginner student...very beginner. I've picked up the Pimsleur program and Rosetta Stone, and am trudging through the first few lessons. However, these flash cards provided the solid foundation which I am now building upon with these other programs.

Learning the Hiragana and Katakana characters takes perhaps an hour (each) with these cards. Once you have them figured out, it's only a matter of repetition to ensure you learn them in long-term memory. My method for using these cards was simple: pick up the first 5 cards, and flash them until you have those cards memorized. Then add 5 more cards and flash all 10. Keep adding cards in sets of 5 until you have the whole deck of either Hiragana or Katakana memorized. While doing this, I think it's important that you speak each character out loud, rather than in your head. Ultimately, if you are learning Japanese you are probably learning to speak it, and speaking each character now will make learning and speaking full words much easier. Kana are the building blocks of Japanese vocabulary, and I have found it much easier to pick up new words once I had these characters mastered.

You may need to find a source online to find the proper sounds for each character. While the examples provided on the cards work in most cases, I find them a little sketchy sometimes. I think this may be because of differences in how some words may be read in different English dialects. I suggest finding a secondary (audio) source online to provide the correct pronunciation of each character. Taking the effort now to get these sounds correct will prevent any possible problems later, such as incorrectly learning a sound and having to relearn it (along with every word which uses it!).

If you are self-teaching the Japanese language, these cards are a necessary first step.

No joke, taught myself to read hiragana and katakana in a week - and that on a ten minute subway ride to and from work! If you are visual learner, this set will teach you to read the kana quickly. Simple as that. Very impressed by White Rabbit Press.

Very effective tool in memorizing the Japanese kana.

Covering all hiragana and katakana, these flash cards are an inexpensive and highly effective learning device for memorization of the Japanese kana.

With entertaining mnemonics provided by Michael Rowley, it only took me about one week of going through the cards for 20-30min a day to memorize all the kana... permanently. Each card includes four alternate style writings of the kana (very helpful for beginners), five sample words using that kana (translated on back), and stroke order. The cards themselves are high quality, easy to shuffle, and come in a robust two compartment box.

I do not normally write product reviews, but well-executed products like this deserve special treatment. If you have a desire to learn Japanese, do not yet have the kana memorized, and learn well by mnemonics, then these are the flash cards for you.

Awesome Cards!

I am a beginner in the Japanese Language and it didn't take me long to memorize all of the cards. Hiragana and Katakana together took me about 4 days memorizing 5 cards at a time.
Some reviews have said that the front of the card doesn't have the English meaning. Well that's just ridiculous because then you'll have to cover the English definition on the front and that will defeat the purpose of a flash card. Definitions always go on the back.

The audio in the beginning was a bit challenging because it's all in Japanese. With a little common sense you can understand it. The lady speaking says the card number, how to pronounce the character, then the line number, then the word. Simple no? Really, some people just want something to complain about. You have to learn to say the numbers in Japanese either way. Consider it a bonus.

There is no easy, fast way to learn another language. It takes time, patience, effort, and several resources. Using these cards is an efficient way to quickly learn Hiragana and Katakana as well as some vocabulary words.

Kanji is a bit more difficult for me. So this time I'm going to combine the audio, the card, and writing it to help me memorize them.

I would highly recommend buying a buddha board at [...]
I love this thing. Simply put, it's like a chalk board but you write on it with water and a brush. So, you save on ink and paper, doing your part for the environment. =)

Thanks!

I picked this book up for me because of the beautiful artwork. The detail, color and composition make you wish you could take a seat in the woods and experience the forest first hand. But then, I realized this book also caught the attention of my son. At 12 months old, he began to bring books to my husband and I to read, and this was one of his selections often. To my delight, a few months later, he started imitating the actions of stretching, yawning, sneezing and scratching as I read. At 18-months old, he still gets excited to read this book, and I still love studying the artwork (to find the well-hidden McCue (the artist) signatures)...I've only found a few when there's a bouncing boy on your lap.

I love reading this book to my boys! We love the beautiful illustrations but I have no idea how to find the hidden McCues. At first I thought, is it that mouse? But he only makes a couple of appearances...it can't be the ladybugs and grasshoppers because those are obvious, so I guess they are actual words...but I have yet to find one!

The book and pictures are nice, but it is the puzzle of finding the 13 hidden "McCue" words painted into the pictures that is great. It usually takes me about 30 minutes to read this book to my kid because I spend so long straining my eyes to find the hidden words. Perhaps I need to upgrade from the board book version I have that has such small illustrations!

This is just the most precious book. The illustrations are beautiful and the story invites interaction with the child by having them make the sounds in the story, such as a bee buzzing or a sneeze. I can't imagine anyone not loving this book. But don't get all sentimental about bunnies and run out and get one for your young child- they require a lot of space and adult attention to be happy, so stick to the pictures in the book, unless you do your research on caring for bunnies and have lots of extra time on your hands (and who does, with young children?)

I had been frustrated when looking for dwarf hamster information since so much that I found was focused on the larger size hamsters. This book solved my problems, plus is has species specific information (Campbell's versus Robo, etc). My one complaint is that they do not properly address the issue of diabetes in dwarf hamsters and even have pictures of Campbell's eating fruit.
Regardless, the gem of this book is in the pictures. The photos are of Cute Overload quality and even the illustrations are adorable. Worth buying just for the photos!

It also gives much information about understanding your hamster, what it needs, and about the history and origins of the 4 different types of dwarf hamsters. Another section includes the breeding of dwarf hamsters. It is very scientifical and educational and can really help you with your house pet.

A Gem by Margaret Wise Brown

This book was first published in 1965 and, unlike so many other books, is still fresh and current. I wish that I had had it as a child, but I love it just the same. I did have many "Little Golden Books", and so many of them are classics (like the Saggy-Baggy Elephant, Little Red Hen, The Pokey Little Puppy, and so on), but none of them have the charm and lasting beauty of "Home for a Bunny".

I wasn't sure what a "Big Little Golden Book" was, but I was pleasantly surprised to see what a lovely hard-backed book it is! It is quite sturdy, with no golden "tape" on the spine that peels off in time like the little ones. The illustrations are gorgeous--so clear and vivid. I like how the pictures fill up the whole page, on each and every page, even the front and back plates. Garth Williams portrays a world in bloom at spring, and a shiny glint in each animal's eye.

Margaret Wise Brown's other "Best Seller", is, of course, "Good-Night Moon". This one is probably more well known. I read it too my boys (now grown) very often when they were small. It is also very engaging for little ones. Brown has a knack to really understand how their little minds work and what gives them pleasure in stories.

I originally bought this book for my niece, but after I saw how wonderful it was, I ordered several more copies which I am keeping on hand as a perfect gift for baby showers and such. I am glad to hear from you people who grew up with this great story, how lucky you are!

A Home For A Bunny was my son's all-time favorite book. We read it over and over again. Now my son is nearly 27, and I still have the same book and read it to his 5-year-old-daughter, whom I am raising. It was her very first book and she demanded it be read every single night. We had fun using different voices and she especially liked the happy ending. She decided that the bunnies were a "Mommy Bunny and a Daddy Bunny", and would kiss them goodnight each time.

I highly recommend this book! I buy one every chance I get, whenever I know someone is going to have a baby.

This is such a sweet little book! Probably not much past age 5, but the story has a bunny looking for a place to stay or a home of his own. He proceeds to ask everyone he meets if he can live with them and they all say no. However, when he meets a little white bunny, the bunny takes him in and they then live together. The last picture is just so sweet with the two bunnies snuggling together. The illustrations make you touch the page because the bunny looks so fuzzy! It is very much loved in our house and we highly recommend it!

A TRUE TWO Stars Gets 3

If it weren't for the illustrations, this book would be rated two stars. I saw this book advertised on Amazon's website among other children's books. The cover was so beautiful, that I had to read the reviews about the content and artistry of this book. I was seconds away from making a purchase when I decided to borrow it from the library instead. The pictures are absolutely gorgeous and I liked the way the author took a spin on the mean old woman in a shoe rhyme and made it into a loving mother bunny rhyme. Children get to learn all kinds of uncommon words (at their age) like shed, trellis, etc. but the rhymes are just names of rabbits who sleep on those objects - boring and uncreative. Example, "Zed slept on the shed" The whole book from A to Z is like that. I was wondering why such a beautifully illustrated book was not such a hot seller on Amazon's rankings and found out why. It's pretty but not educational. I don't need my little one to learn uncommon names of people that are supposed to rhyme with the objects. If you want a good ABC book, I highly recommend Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. That is by far the best. It is very educational and very fun. As for numbers, I recommend Ten Little Ladybugs and/ or Over in the Meadow. Both are just excellent.

Illustrations are wonderful. Text is silly fun, but instructive in counting and alphabet. Just don't be so taken by the beautiful bunny drawings that you decide to get a bunny for your young one- they're more adult pets, despite their cuteness. They require a lot of care, research, adult attention and space to roam. Let your kids enjoy the pretty pictures instead.

Mama bunny lives in a shoe, has 26 babes, but knows just what to do. She tucks them into various "beds" as she counts them off. The detailed illustrations are what I like best about this book. My son loves studying them. He gets a kick out of the quirky places the bunnies sleep, esp Frankie in the hankie for some reason. I wish that this was written so that the bunnies' names and the places they slept started with the same letter. That would have reinforced the alphabetic aspect of this book, but maybe it's asking too much. I still really do like this one.

Unlike so many poorly executed rhyming books, this one is a joy to read. The rhymes are well constructed and creative. And the pictures are delightful. Just tonight, my 6 year old asked me to read it again as a bedtime story, because he loves to study the engrossing pictures. And we've enjoyed this book for years. I was happy to just now see that this author/illustrator pair have done other books together.

I'm such a sucker for rhymes. Fortunately, so are my kids. There's nothing like a story with pleasant and soothing rhymes to get them off to sleep quickly (giving me more time to write reviews :D) See, there's an Old Mother Rabbit who lives in a shoe. She has 26 children (those rabbits sure know how to multiply!) but she definitely knows what to do. The tale travels through the alphabet -naming each bunny and where they fall asleep (1 is named Abel, he slept on the table.....and so on) My kids delighted in guessing where each little bunny would sleep (some places were pretty strange - like who could fall asleep in candy???) It also taught them words they don't normally use (e.g. lane, holly, kettle). Counting, the alphabet, and rhyming.... all in one sweet little bedtime story. What more could a parent ask for - besides children who beg to go to bed?

Finklehopper Frog, originally published in hardcover, is being released by Tricycle Press in paperback.

Author Irene Livingston has published over a hundred children's stories and poems and lives in Vancouver, British Columbia. Brian Lies has illustrated over a dozen children's books and lives in Massachusetts.

Wow! Everyone in Finklehopper Frog's neighborhood seems to be involved in a fitness craze and have taken up jogging. Finklehopper Frog thinks exercise is a good idea and purchases a jazzy jogging suit with pink and purple dots. He gets dressed and hits the trails--hopping.

His confidence continues to diminish as other joggers snicker and laugh at him. He's feeling pretty awful until a bunny convinces him that his unique style is `a good thing' and he doesn't have to feel bad about it.

The message of Finklehopper Frog is a good one and is delivered in a manner that small children will easily understand. They will giggle at the pictures and get caught up in the verse. The illustrations are delightful and add to the story.

Armchair Interviews says: Children will enjoy Finklehopper Frog and want to read it again and again.

Very fun sing-songy book

I love this book. It is a very fun book about a frog who wants to learn to jog, so he goes out and buys a funky jogging suit and takes to the neighborhood streets. The illustrations of different animals in their homes as if they had plots in suburbia is hysterical. Poor Finklehopper becomes the laughing-stock of the neighborhood as he can't quite seem to get the hang of jogging. That all changes when he meets Ruby Rabbit who points out that frogs and rabbits hop, they don't jog. The story ends on a nice note of acceptance of all despite differences.

Finally a book we don't roll eyes over when asked to read for the 10th time in one day! Well written and easy to read not to mention that the art work is amazing. I look forward to receiving Finklehopper Frog Cheers.

First this book is for every animal lover, whether you love dogs, cats or rabbits. Second, it is visually a beautiful book, which would make a lovely gift, but most of all, when I started to read this book, it is as wonderful at the book Marley and Me. As I write this review I can still feel the over all beauty of this book. I plan to give this book to many of my friends as their next birthday gifts.

What a wonderful inspirational book!

This book is very catching from the heart catching stories to the wonderful color pictures and cover! Each story reminds us that we are here to help protect those who aren't able to take care of themselves in this world.

The way Ms. Mead brings each rabbit to life in her writings makes a person feel that they are a part of each of the stories. I also loved the way that practical information for the lay-person is included after each of the stories.

At first I thought this was going to be a book that only adults could respond to, however once I began reading I realized that even young children could relate to the stories. This is a most have for anyone that is considering a rabbit as a pet, either as a healthy or as a rescued bun.

BEST RABBIT BOOK EVER

I loved this book! This is a great book for anyone that has ever loved an animal. If you have ever had a rabbit in your life you must read this book. After I read it, I bought another one as a gift for a friend. It's one of those books you will want to keep forever. I have not found anything else like it and I hope she will write another one in the near future. THE BEST RABBIT BOOK EVER!

A must have for rabbit owners and others

This is the kind of book that is very touching as well as enlightening. It offers a view of what makes rabbits tick that not many know.
This is the kind of book you do not want to finish, you want it to continue on and on.
Very intuitive.
