Final book in the Church Mice seriesReview Date: 2002-09-25
As usual, this book is full of amazingly detailed pictures, and has a wickedly fun story. It's not the best of the Church Mice books, but I wouldn't have missed it.
Graham Oakley said in a press interview that this would probably be the last Church Mouse book he would write, but that his next project is to bring out an edition of Beauty and the Beast illustrated with Pre-Raphaelite-style paintings.
The final Church Mice book?Review Date: 2002-12-06
Sadly, this could be the last of the church mice series as Mr Oakley has said he's thinking of letting them retire, but it's a good innings for mice that first appeared in print in 1972.

New readers will chuckle at every page turn in this well-paced early reader from Lynn Hazen, with delightful illustrations by Elyse Pastel. Hazen uses clever puns (Grand Rabbits School!) and new twists on old tales to weave her emotionally engaging characters into a tale coordination and confidence which will hit squarely on target with its intended age group.
Hop out and buy it!

During the play, Zoe freezes. But all ends well as her buddies (bunnies?) Woody and Charlie quickly come up a plan to help her get over her fear.
The illustrations by Elyse are funny, dynamic and exprressive. A great team!

Mary Ned Fotis records her family's often harrowing escapades with humour, sensually vivid details and the perspective of someone who
instantly
detects and relishes cultural paradoxes, expanding them to full, glorious absurdity.
Despite the many trials that beset the family, which include thefts, broken limbs, a kidnapped servant,
tropical fevers
and a slipped disc, Mary Ned's narrative remains comforting, bemused, even exultant in the rich contradictions of the complex culture around her.
Many in our book group expressed a wish to linger over the book, savoring
its many hypnotically fluid descriptive passages. Here's one example:
Rajisthan! Sere thirsty landscape, stone walls dividing brilliant green irrigated fields from scrubby patches of brown rocky land. Cactus hedges, brown humps of hills in the background, alternating fields of green, yellow, chartreuse, brown, ochre and tan. Women are clad in brilliant hues with scarves from head top to ankles, backlighted with unearthly brilliance as they walk down the roadside, squat earthen water jars balance on their heads. A touch of Egypt in a Greek landscape with Hindu overlay. Men in dhoti loincloths walk next to others in shocking pink shirts, surrounded by children in red and gold with brass pots gleaming on their heads. How thrilling to bump and bounce through this beautiful and rugged countryside with its roving cattle and turbaned mustachioed men. Two men squat, side by side, in blue paisley turbans - each one a sari's worth of fabric wound and puffed out like an oversized Egyptian cabbage. True glory for the head! Even the most menial and insignificant head assumes dignity in such a turban

My teacher read it to me in my little church school. Now that I read it to my own students I find that I still love it and it still inspires me.
Mr. Hare had a real passion for what he was doing, God and the Karen people.
