A "must" for lovers of children's literature!

What a terrific story! I first encountered this version of a popular folk motif at my public library. I read this book to the children in my small home daycare; we were immediately hooked. The story is just the right length for preschoolers, and is fun to read aloud. I love taking on the voice of the insatiable cat and the children chime right in. Readers of children's literature will recognize the similarities between Fat Cat and another of our favorites, "The Clay Pot Boy" (Cynthia Jameson and Arnold Lobel). This morning at breakfast, I was reminded of the fat cat and said aloud, "I may be fat. . .", to which the children replied, "but I'm still a hungry cat." I have to get my own copy. . .today!

I *love* this book! I tutor early readers, and it will be perfect as a read-aloud when we tackle words built with _at--fat, cat, mat, sat, rat, bat, etc. Of course the kids will also love the SLIP, SLOP, SLUUURP refrain, and especially the BURP! And I enjoy that the cat reminds me of a certain rotund member of my own cat family. :-)

Our kids loved this book! It is filled with catchy and simple phrases which our kids could not help but repeat throughout the day. The theme is quite humorous, making this story very enjoyable to read again and again. As well, it conveys a good moral about greed!

If you're serious enough about feline health issues to have clicked on the title of this book, BUY IT. NOW. (Then find out if your vet already has a copy, and if s/he doesn't, invest in another copy for your vet. Seriously.)

If it's absolutely impossible for you to afford the second (2002) edition, pick up a copy of the first (1998, I think) edition. Although it's always important with medical stuff to get current info, even the first edition will leave you FAR more knowledgeable and up-to-date about feline health issues than the vast majority of vets (who are often too busy to keep up with current info and typically more focused on dogs, as well). (No book -- including this one -- can begin to take the place of a good vet; but this book will equip you to tell the difference between a good cat vet who knows his/her stuff, and a mediocre vet with a good bedside manner.)

The Pill Book Guide to Medications for Your Dog and Cat is another very good book for the serious cat lover. (Though it's *desperately* overdue for a new edition. Desperately. But still very useful.)

But, back to the point at hand: BUY THE FELINE PATIENT. Your cat(s) need you to.

I can't recommend "The Feline Patient" highly enough. The information in this book has saved the lives of two of my cats. Soon after I bought this book, my 15-year-old Maine Coon cat became very ill, was diagnosed with diabetes, yet the ever-increasing doses of insulin that were prescribed didn't seem to improve his condition. The more insulin he was given, the higher his glucose level became. Concerned, I began to research the problem on my own, using this book, and hypothesized that my cat had not only diabetes, but also chronic pancreatitis, and that he was not only unable to produce sufficient insulin, but was also unable to effectively use the insulin he was given. Based upon the information in this book, I requested that several other diagnostic tests be performed. These tests confirmed my hypotheses, my cat's treatment has been revised, and I now look forward to more happy months and years with him.

While grooming my ten-year-old Cymric, I felt some very small, hard bumps in her back. These were approximately the size of an ordinary matchhead. Although they were very, very small, they were painful, and she cried when I touched them, even lightly. From having read this book, I knew that any unexplained bump or lump beneath the surface of a cat's skin should be evaluated by a veterinarian immediately. My cat has required two surgeries, but thanks to early detection and treatment, her prognosis is far better than it would otherwise have been.

"The Feline Patient" was written for veterinary practitioners, so the lay person will find the vocabulary challenging, and will probably require a good veterinary dictionary as a companion to this book. Nevertheless, the person who loves and cares for feline family members will find that the benefits greatly outweigh that challenge.

Thank you, Amazon.com, for making this book available to the general public!

Cat Guardians Should Consider this Reference Book

Review Date: 2005-08-12
This book provides excellent insight into feline symptoms. While it uses medical terminology, it's the same terminology you'll see on the your pet's veterinarian visit records, tests, and even in other feline health books. It describes cat symptoms and indicates possible causes. It recommends courses of investigation and explains what to do based upon the results. It also weighs different diagnostic approaches, e.g., x-rays vs. ultrasound.

This information is useful for laypersons who wish to be an even better healthcare advocate for their pet. For example, it explains when and why it's important to pay attention to sneezing: when it occurs in cats aged six or less it is likely due to a viral or bacterial infection, while in cats over 10 years it is likely due to neoplasia (cancer).

I'd like to be a better pet guardian in future, which is why I bought this book. Unfortunately, my vet thought my chronically sneezing 13-year-old cat had simply developed allergies - even after I took her in twice as I was concerned. He was wrong. If I'd had this book to consult, I'd have known to press for additional testing.

All in all, this book is excellent to have on the bookshelves - so that it's there when needed. Cats do not present with the same symptoms as dogs. They often conceal that they are in pain. Once you've been through a cat with illness, I think it will help you to recognize it in other cats.

One other tip that I didn't find in this book - if your cat's vocalization habits change - pay attention. According to material I've seen published by the SPCA, and personal experience, this is a likely indication that the cat is in pain. The SPCA document also indicated that medical attention is likely required most urgently by the time a cat vocalizes about it. In fact, by the time they vocalize, it's likely the disease is significantly advanced. Better to be alert for other symptoms and signs.

Another resource that I'd recommend that is directed to the layperson is "The Cornell Books of Cats: The Comprehensive and Authoritative Medical Reference for Every Cat and Kitten" by Mordecai Siegal. It offers excellent information on how to recognize when an animal is in pain. The signs are subtle, e.g., cats will often simply restrict movement in answer to pain. My criticism of this book is that it glosses over scary subjects such as cancer, and as I see it, encourages readers to think all is well and further investigation isn't necessary.

In the land of Camarrhan, a realm where magic is taken for granted, Empath Cael is mortally wounded by an arrow in his shoulder that was shot by his country's enemy. Cael's Wayfinder (a person who controls the gates between the various worlds) takes him to an Australian hospital on Earth where Jenna Wade, takes care of him. A loner, she surprises herself by being attracted to him. When Verra opens the Way and takes them to Jenna's home to her surprise she heals him and the wayshe does it makes them believe Jenna belongs in Camrrhan.

Jenna learns that her grandmother was chased by an evil man and escaped onto Earth and she is taken to the Guild where she hones her Healing powers. Cael wants nothing to do with her because when he was unconscious, she had sex with him, forming an empathic bond between them. He feels like he was given no chance in taking a mate and while they do try to work out their differences because the bond is unbreakable they have to find and capture who is trying to decimate the magic from Camrrhan by killing those that are strong in magic.

SLEEPING DRAGONS is a fine work of romantic fantasy. Cat Collins has created a world almost identical to Earth except for the fact that technology is banned believing it destroys the planet. Magic works better than technology when properly used and the heroine after learning how to wield her magic has to agree. She is a strong yet vulnerable woman who realizes first that she loves Cael and her new world but readers will want to hit the hero over the head for being so unforgiving to a woman who didn't know what her impulsive act would cause to happen. Cat Collins' debut novel will win the author many fans who hope there will be more books set in the word of Camrrhan.

Reading all the other reviews, including the professional ones, I really can't add too much in the way of description. I think the only things I would want to add are that Jenna feels incredibly compelled to mate with Cael. She awakes after "one of those" dreams, next to Cael, feeling this strong affinity, almost a pull towards him, and she just keeps going. None of this does she ever explain to anybody, because she is so horrified by her actions afterward. And she isn't one to run from responsibility. Cael fights the bonding so hard because he was drilled over and over that it must be made by choice and MUST include Love, Trust, and Passion. Of course, to him, Jenna broke the trust part all to smithereens before it could even begin to form! Since he is so angry with her, he has a hard time admitting to his growing attraction to her, and his growing love. Yes, it is frustrating because in typical male fashion, he takes twice as long as any sensible (female?) person would to come to his senses and admit to himself, let alone her, that Jenna is kind, warm-hearted, honorable, valiant, loyal, and loving to an incredible degree, and that he returns her love in equal measure. The last thing to add is that if you are a person who believes in preserving our world as best we can, you will like the way Ms. Collins has portrayed her world of Camarrhan. Yes, they keep technology out, use magic instead, but not everyone had magic, only some. I really enjoyed the way the author thought through the substitutions, it was well-thought out, and flowed well throughout the book.

I HIGHLY recommend this book to fantasy and romance readers alike! Both will find a lot to enjoy here. This is a very well-paced book. There is never a dull moment, and I could not put it down. I can hardly wait for the following books that are announced at the end of this one. Ms. Collins states that the sequel is already written and so is a third novel set in the same world. I say, GET THOSE BOOKS PUBLISHED! I want to read them, NOW. Welcome whole-heartedly, with open arms Cat Collins! Thank you and keep up the great work!

I loved this. Cat Collins sees with the heart. The fantasy world of Camarrhan is an interesting, parallel world where magic takes the place of technology. Not spell-making or wizardry kind of magic, but a practical, fantastical, imaginative kind of magic that really works for those lucky enough to be gifted. I couldn't put it down. The non-relationship of Cael and Jenna had me both intrigued and frustrated, and the way the author plays them and their emotions off against each other is most involving. I wanted to cheer whenever Cael made some small concession to Jenna, but wanted to thump him often! She's feisty yet vulnerable, strong but not pushy. He's desirable and talented, yet bound by his beliefs and culture. I loved the magic of the land and the way it works. Healers heal (of course), Empaths mindspeak, and can pick up others emotions. Wayfinders provide doorways into other worlds as well as transporting Camarrhan folk around the land and Wielders can call up magical fire for light, heat or as a weapon. The supporting cast of characters is also well-written. The villain is a nasty piece of work, and I thought Cat did well in 'creeping me out' with his sadistic side. I want to visit Camarrhan again, and I definitely want to read more about Cael and Jenna. They are hot! (Cat writes a good sex scene, too -- tasteful, not graphic, but mm!)

Fraidy Cat was my favorite book when I was a kid, I read it everytime my class when to the library. I related to the "gray cat" who was the fraidy cat. I was very shy when I was a kid. It is funny that I have a gray cat now as an adult, and it was not on purpose either! My cat was a fraidy cat when I first got him too.

When I was very young, I had a book called "Fraidy Cat" that I loved. It described a cat that was afraid of the dark. There was cut-out on the cover that had an elevate circle with a very pleasant face of a cat. The eyes lit up in the dark. Somehow over the years it disappeared and I have been searching for a copy for my grandchildren. Is this the same wonderful book???

This book by Posy Simmonds is a wonderful exploration into the death, and life of a dear cat. It is written with ease, and fluidity making it a very read-able book for many ages groups. It was given to my son some years ago, and he is now 16. I asked him if we should get a copy for his little cousin's birthday, and his response was YES, it's my favorite, and I think I've read it a couple hunderd times.

This is not just a kid's book, it's for anyone. Think that you - as me - don't cry too easily? Try this book. Gets me every time - in 22 pages. It just doesn't get any better than that.

If you read it enough many times, perhaps you can read it out loud to your child without becoming a wheeping willow. Then do that - they will get a different perspective on life and death.

It's a shame this book is Out of Print.

I haven't read this book BUT I have seen a short cartoon based on it and it was very good. It's about this familly who's cat dies from CAT FLU, and , of course their very sad about it. Well, one night, the little girl hears a sound. A cat meow! She wakes up her brother and tells him, then they go dounstairs and outside to find a cat dressed in fancy close and a top hat. Ginger { the cat with the close who is from up the street} explains to the children that him and all of these other cats are there for Fred 's funeral. Then out from the house comes the familly guinea pig who says a few words about his best friend. The children then find out that Fred was a very famous cat singer and when they try to explain to every one that all Fred did was sleep, the animals didn't want to hear it. What happenes next you'll have to read for yourself! This book is really good for kids, people with animals and/or people who have lost pets. I liked FRED because it had a good ending, it was interesting and funny. Another good book is curious and comical cats.

"It is rare for a mouse to be a cat's best friend," said Tug. "Right," Milly agreed. "A mouse is usually a cat's best dinner." This fun chapter-book for early readers has lots going for it: situations that make you smile, chuckle and laugh out loud. The illustrations by Jennifer Danza perfectly capture Milly and Tug's relationship. This is very reminiscent of Arnold Lobel's Frog and Toad books. The author also captures the ups and downs of childhood friendships with great accuracy. This would be a great gift for the child in your life who is ready for a chapter book. I hope we hear more from Milly and Tug!

Milly and Tug's spelling bee is one of the funniest I've ever seen--Amelia Bedelia fans will love the word play. When the two friends co-author a book, they run into difficulty right away. Should the title be "Milly and Tug" or "Tug and Milly"?

The pair may have disagreements (while the reader chuckles), but their genuine friendship makes the book touching as well as humorous.

The illustrations--wonderful black-and-white line drawings--add to the humor.

We are all familiar with these tales, but take out the usual characters and replace them with Garfield or Odie and you are in for a real treat and a whole bunch of giggles. The illustrations are outstanding as well. All in all a read winner of a book. Highly recommended.
