"Those who aren't already cat lovers are not likely to rad this book. Assuming that we could use more cat lovers, that is a shame. This volume is bound to create more feline fanatics. It takes the reader behind the cat's clever intelligence, its devilish tricks, its emotional attachment (and sometimes nefarious perfidy.) It virtually guarantees homes for many a deserted kitten."

This is a must read for all the million of cat lovers out there! Mrs.Fitzgerald-Galloway does such an excellent job of describing in vivid details the personality of the cats she encounters one can almost get the sense these are people not animals. Even if you aren't a cat lover you'll enjoy reading about her experiences with our furry friends and her family as well. I truly enjoyed this book and can't wait for the next one.

The parade of feline characters that have passed through Ms. Galloway's life will leave their mark on yours, as they are brought alive in her pages. I laughed at the antics of Bunny the clown and cried for Tina. Each cat is so well described that I felt as though I were cat sitting for a friend. I loved how each cat brought something different into her life, as we all know every cat has it's own unique personality, and the unconditional love from a pet shines through.

This is one of the most beautifully done books I have seen in a very long time. The cover alone is worth the price of the book with a feline "Cindy Crawford" adorned in a "real" jeweled collar in a true Hollywood glamour puss pose.
And it only gets better inside the cover. The subjects are some of the most enchanting furry gods and goddesses this side of heaven. Their personalities just jump off the pages and when they share their feline wisdom in everything from behavior, "Don't whisper when you can roar", beauty tips "Remember that good lighting is more important than good genes" and fashion "Embrace your irrational love of shoes" we realize that we can indeed learn much from them.
As a cat lover and owner of three felines with their own attiutdes, I could not resist reading this book from cover to cover (easy to do as it is about 60 pages) the minute I got it.
This book is a must have for any or all cat lovers or just anybody who appreciates great photography and very errudite wisdom.

Last Christmas a friend gave me the book, "Catwatching" also by Desmond Morris, and I was so intrigued with the book and the beautiful photography that I began searching for other books by the same author. I finally came across this one and was equally as pleased. Catworld is absolutely fantastic! The coloured photography is exquisite and the book, with just under 500 pages, contains anything and everything you want to know about your feline friends. From big cats of the wild to the various breeds of domestic cats, from the origin of Puss and Boots to cat care, this book contains a wealth of well-organized information, all in alphabetical order.

I have two Persians, and "Catworld" is a book I definitely would not want to be without. No matter how broad your knowledge is on cats, novice or expert, you are bound to find some new and interesting facts and amusing trivia contained among the pages. There are some recently published books on the market that do not contain nearly as much information as this one. "Catworld" is an excellent resource book for your library and you are bound to enjoy the stunning photography. I highly recommend this top-notch book...and your cat will love you for it!

"Cat World: A Feline Encyclopedia" by Desmond Morris is a great reference and a wonderful browse for cat lovers. This encyclopedia contains nearly a thousand illustrated entries covering eighty breeds of domestic cats, thirty-six species of wild cats, plus articles on feline anatomy, behavior, biology, folklore, history, literature and art.

Other sections list "The 100 Best Cat Books," cat films, cat societies, and cat welfare organizations. One of my favorite entries is a list of authors and their cats, and their quotations about cats. For instance, Brian Aldiss and his cats, Macramé, Yum-Yum, Foxie, Jackson, and Nickie list the two things cats cannot stand: "The wretched Door, the horrid Fence."

The one deliberate omission in this encyclopedia is the subject of feline veterinary care. A good reference for this sort of information is "The Cornell Book of Cats," edited by Mordecai Siegal.

Morris, a trained zoologist, was the curator of mammals at the London Zoo from 1959 to 1971, where he was responsible for the largest collection of wild felines in the world. He has also authored other popular works on zoology, including "The Naked Ape" and "Catwatching."

As might be expected from his background, the author's entries on feline behavior are some of the most interesting in the encyclopedia. Morris states that cats have a much greater acoustic range than dogs or humans, especially in their ability to hear high-pitched sounds. Cats prefer to hunt by stealth and need to be able to detect the ultrasonic squeaking of their prey.
I'll never forget the time I accidentally shut one of my cats in the room with me when I was practicing my violin. I happened to turn around and there was Calvin, pressing his enormous, furry body against the door, a piteous look in his eye. After reading this encyclopedia, I prefer to blame his behavior on his enhanced acoustic range rather than taking it as a commentary on my musical ability. After all, Calvin probably knew that violin strings used to be made of sheepgut, not catgut as is popularly supposed. Morris believes the term 'catgut' replaced 'sheepgut' because of the noises some people made while scraping on the strings.

As to why I turned around and saw him there, read Morris's entry on feline ESP.

'Cat World' is filled with feline anecdotes, both repeatable and some that are almost too bizarre to believe. Be sure to check out the entry on P.T. Barnum's 'cherry-colored cat,' and the story of what happened to the great English novelist Thomas Hardy's heart--coupled with the mysterious disappearance of his beloved cat, Cobby.

Fascinating book!

After looking through this book for a few hours, my husband and I immediately began trying to think of who we knew who would like it for a gift. Not only does it cover the subject matter you would normally expect from a book on cats, such as rundowns on all the recognized breeds, but it has interesting entries on such subjects as why cats eat grass. Beautiful pictures. A perfect gift for the cat lover on your list. Wish my friends would take the hint and buy me one!

Someone gave us this book, and since I didn't have anything else, I started reading it to my baby (3 months old) every night before bed. I couldn't BELIEVE IT but she would stare and stare at the cute little (african themed) pictures. The words are probably fun for her to hear, and the simple story is just darling. She will sit still the entire time I read it, and sometimes try to grab the bright little animals. I LOVE this book.

Normally I am very tired of hearing authors make up new words and using little sound bites, but not with Chicky Chicky Chook Chook. We read this with a classroom of three-year-olds and they were giggling away. My son loved it at least 7 times! I had to keep reading it just to hear him attempting the new sounds he heard. The talent of Cathy MacLennan goes even further with illustrations briming with imagination and texture!

I bought this book for my nephew who is 18 months old. He absolutely LOVES it. The manner the author/illustrator uses is VERY good. Upon the first reading, my nephew thought the chicks were actually fuzzy. The sounds that make up the text are mesmerizing. The story features bees, chicks, and cats. Children who are learning animals will be captivated. Many times when playing, we'll hear him, "Chicky, chicky, chook chook," or "Snuggle, snuggle, sleepy shine."

I was also taken with the methods of illustration. The author was born in Zimbabwe and now lives in the UK. Influences of Africa are apparent in the vivid and sweet illustrations.

This book is very enjoyable for toddlers and adults alike!

Clever Character-Building Composition

Review Date: 2005-03-30
It seems some barnyard cleanup is in order: one cat gossips; another is a bully. When Christopher Cat's mother informs her son that cats need to learn character, but that cats can't be taught, Christopher takes up the challenge. He is sure that if they launch a Character Club, the other barnyard cats - all inquisitive creatures - will want to join it. And they do.

Christopher's enthusiasm is contagious and wins over his mother. Through her character, young readers will hear such gems as: "Character is ... always doing the right thing, even when nobody is watching." And "How can we learn character if we don't know what it is?"

The cats learn that everyone has character traits, "like little tags hanging from your collar, telling everyone what you are." They find out that character isn't something that happens as a result of wishful thinking; it takes effort. They also learn that character means little unless it's put into practice.

This is a delightful and instructive book, good for countless re-readings, and should be on the shelf of every parent, teacher and caregiver. Desirable character traits are listed for easy reference and will make discussion easier. Best of all, in our age of quick fixes, children will learn that building character isn't an overnight achievement but an ongoing process - and that the benefits are priceless.

Character Formation with Literary Value

"I am particularly impressed with the beauty and richness of the language of this work. Rich, colorful imagery and warmly personalized narrative combine with natural dialogue to engage and delight the reader. Hamilton's little animal characters romp across the pages with a vibrancy, verve and level of reflection, easily modeled by young audiences. Beautiful illustrations punctuate the margins, providing visual cues for the young reader and prompts for enriched class discussion. (In this latter regard, it is a welcome relief to see beautiful illustrations, rather than the clumsy, often horrific caricatures that currently populate children's literature, cartoons, and even textbooks.) Thank you for the "visual treat"

I can picture the Character Critter series (especially, Christopher Cat's Character Club) taking its place on bookshelves alongside classics such as the Raggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy series, Charlotte's Web, and Winnie the Pooh."

I agree wholeheartedly with the other two reviewers. This was one of my favorite books of my childhood. When gathering books for my children's library I was devasted to find out it was out of print, but managed to find a copy through a book search company. Every time I look at the illustrations I find new things that I didn't notice before; the detail is phenonmenal and the story is hilarious.

I was so fortunate to have a good librarian when I was a child. She had every Graham Oakley "Church Mouse" book ever made, plus the "Changes" one that is also completely spellbinding. Of course, I was in elementary school in 1976 when these books were still in print - having tried numerous times to find them since, and failing, has been more than disappointing. I agree with the other reviewer - it is a complete SHAME these books ever went out of print. They were hysterically funny, deep (in their own way) and unforgettable. My sisters and I still quote from these books and we're all in our late twenties, early thirties.

All of Graham Oakley's children's books are splendid in all the ways that a picture book should be - the text and plot are simple enough for young children to grasp while entertaining enough to amuse older siblings and adults, and the illustrations are superb. But The Church Cat Abroad is the very top of the line. It's an utter shame that the thing should ever have been allowed to go out of print. The scene of the cat and the mice painting each other in watercolor is not-to-be-missed

We bought this board book for our 16 month old daughter at the art museum in Chicago because it was so colorful and cute. My daughter loves this book so much. She is almost 2 now and she can say many of the words and loves to say and mimic the things that cleo is doing on each page. We were so happy to find that more Cleo books exist at the library too! There isn't a night that goes by that we don't read this book before bed. It ends with Cleo going to sleep and is very good for reading before bedtime.

My son got this book as a Christmas present when he was 9 months old. The book was a great read then, and we still enjoy it now that he is almost 2. I think it has a lot more use left in it. The book has really nice pictures, and a nice rhyme. We are cat lovers here, so this book was an especially big hit.

I love looking at children's books now that I have had my first child. But as I have shopped, I've learned that many books marked Baby to Preschool are not always appropriate for a baby under 1 or even 2 (aside from being excellent for chewing) because the topic or text is too advanced. But sometimes, it's nice to find a book that conceptually works for the little ones. And this book is perfect. Very simple text about a little cat who wants to find a friend and a home. The story is not too cloying, and it's not silly. But it is humorous, cute, and sweet. The colorful artwork matches the sweet, rhyming text. Highly recommended.

In 1912 in the Sierras, life is not only hard for everyone, but most people believe they are worse off now than a few years ago. Ten years old Daisy James insists she sees angels, but her two older brothers and her younger siblings look upon her as a lunatic. Still, Daisy believes while knowing that all the townsfolk are sad, especially her mother Abigail, who stopped singing and laughing when she lost the baby last year.

Daisy has a plan to bring joy and God back into the lives of the beleaguered locals. She wants to build a church, but no one heeds the words of a preadolescent female. With the patience of Job, Daisy writes a play, COME, MY LITTLE ANGEL, in which she persuades her peers to participate on the journey back home.

COME, MY LITTLE ANGEL will catch the attention of the reader from start to finish with its "Little Engine that Could" story line to inspire everyone at a time we need books like this. The historical tale never slows down as readers feel the pain of the charcaters and the hopes of the little heroine who refuses to bend from peer, parental, and sibling pressure. Diane Noble provides a noble experience for those readers who need a lift or who want an angel in their life should share the novel with their children.

I decided to read this book based on a recommendation by Liz Curtis Higgs (one of my favorite authors)and I am so glad I did. This book is a wonderful little story about how God honors the faith of a child. I read alot of books and it has been a long time since one moved me to tears, but that is exactly what this one did. It is easy to focus on the bad things in this world, especially now, but this book reminds us that God does care about us and our world and he will answer prayer.

I was given this book many years ago, but have discovered it anew since we started reading it to our toddler son. The story is really too complicated for him, but he is entranced by the beautiful cats. Their eyes, in particular, are mesmerising. Any cat lover will treasure this book. It's a combination of beautiful cat illustrations (which are really almost portraits) and tongue-in-cheek poetry that captures the nuances of personality with which all cat owners are familiar. My fiancee and I have had fun writing Leman-esque poetry about our own cats, inspired, of course, by this book.
