I hadn't enjoyed a book this much in a really long time. It may sound trite, but I couldn't put it down. It was hilarious and as soon as I finished it I went online to see what other books by this author were available. Like others have mentioned, it reminded me of a Carl Hiaasen novel and maybe a little of Maarten Troost thrown in.

Satisfying on every level

Great setting, great on the details, and a great read. You'll be happy with the love angles and triangles, the premise and the plot. For some reason I'm reminded of "Sick Puppy" by Hiaasen, in the very best way.

Light and satisfying. Enjoy!

Could not put book down. Aging rock star implants himself in your heart. Evil kidnapper evolves into sensitive caring man thanks to powers of love. Sexy, spicy and constantly drawing you in. Read it on plane trip to Hawaii, and read it again on trip home to JFK, NYC. This guy Smith really knows how to write a tantalizing story!

More fun than a frozen margarita on the beach! Salty is hilarious, raunchy, and continuously entertaining! I read it all in one sitting, and couldn't put it down. Take a fun trip to Thailand with an aging rock star, oh and be careful of pirates and FBI agents along the way. Seriously, what could be more fun than that?

Carl Hiassen meets Bangkok 8

I bought my favorite book of all time, "Boy Wonder" by James Robert Baker because someone described it as "Citizen Kane meets Blue Velvet." I'm a sucker for the one-line Hollywood pitch, and bought this book because of the quote on the cover: "Graham Greene meets the Marx Brothers." I was not disappointed, although, having just read it, I might say: "Carl Hiassen meets Bangkok 8."

As in a Hiassen novel, I loved the quirky characters. Turk Henry, the second-fiddle bass player in a wildly successful, recently defunct heavy-metal band fumbles through a mid-life crisis on the beaches of Thailand, determined to rescue his super-model wife from the clutches of kidnappers. His wife finds the kidnapping a perfect opportunity to deal with some of her own issues.

As in Bangkok 8, we are treated to a wonderful portrayal of the sensuality of Thailand, from the stunning food and smells to the rich depths and variety of the sex industry. Graham Greene is brought to mind by expatriate government agents acting on their own behalf, and actually trying to undermine the rescue effort. As for the Marx Brothers, well, I suppose they ate some Duck Soup, among the many mouth-watering meals.

I had a great time with this book, and put it down with a big smile on my face. I am certainly looking forward to reading Smith's previous books.

Unforgettable story of love and courage!

When I first learned of this true life account of a very brave little mother cat, I was moved to tears. There is no creature on the planet, human or animal, who does not fear fire. Scarlet put her life at great risk, again and again, to save her five kittens. How great is a mother's love?

Scarlet may be just a cat to some, but to me she personifies everything a mother should be! If you care about animals, you can't help but love Scarlet. You will be deeply touched by the many caring humans who became intertwined in her little life. From the truly compassionate firefighter, David Gianelli, to the woman who eventually adopted Scarlet, you'll pleasantly savor and revel in the goodness of mankind.

This book should be recommended reading in our public schools because it lovingly teaches children compassion and virtues. Though the photos of a severely burned Scarlet are graphic, they poignantly illustrate the depth of her devotion and willingness to suffer pain in order to save the lives of her babies.

I loved this book. I love knowing that Scarlet is forever loved and cherished and has left a indelible memory in the hearts of caring people everywhere.

Scarlett was once a nameless, unknown, unloved alley cat -- until a fire, set to the abandoned building that was "home" to her and her five month-old kittens, drove Scarlett to the act of bravery that has touched human hearts worldwide. Five times, Scarlett nosed through the smoke and flames to rescue her babies. Back and forth, carrying her infants to the slushy, winter-drenched street. Scarlett herself suffered massive burns; her eyes were swollen shut and much of her fur was singed away.

She was found in this state by fireman David Giannelli, who tenderly, urgently rescued Scarlett and her brood. From there, a human flood of care, compassion, love, and hope helped the feline family to heal from the trauma...and all (excepting one kitten, who died from a later viral infection) are now happy homebodies who I'm sure have entirely taken over the lives and hearts of their humans!

This story illustrates the very best of human and animal compassion. What better, irrefutable evidence for the intelligence, love, and courage of other species! Take it home and prepare to cry your heart out -- I did!

If this book doesn't lift your spirits and make you feel like there are still compassionate people in this world then nothing will. It is a "can't miss" book for cat lovers -- or for anybody who has a heart. It's the tale of the power of a mother cat's love in saving her family of newborn kittens, and of the people who worked so hard to help them recover. It is an inspiring story to share.

We are purchasing this series one at a time for our daughter, who is also named Jenny. She is eating them up! The stories are simple and sweet, but include lots of old-fashioned adventure, just perfect for young kids. We own several titles now and I have not been disappointed by any of them. Charming illustrations and great stories makes for a perfect combination! I recommend this series highly. Probably up to a fourth grade reading level.

I picked up a Jenny and the cat Club book at a yard sale in the late 1970's. It quickly became my favorite book, and I still have it today. I tried to collect other Jenny books over the years, but they are hard to find in good condition - and expensive - so I was happy to see them all republished in hardcover! My collection grows!!

These books are wonderful - hope you will buy one for your kids - or yourself! :)

I thought this story would be far fetched being that Jenny goes to a "camp." But she actually goes to a kennel and it made more sense to me (talking cats, cat who drives--perfectly normal to me). Nonetheless, the story keeps in balance with the rest of Averill's series. My five year old truly enjoys this series. He loves cats and enjoys the fun adventures Jenny the cat experiences.

This novel kept me glued from the first page and the fast thrilling pace carried through to the end. I am an avid reader of James Patterson, John Grisham and Stephen King. I have to admit Cat LeDevic novels will now be added to that list!!!

This story finally shows a strong, female protagonist in Maggie. She is tough, determined and overcomes witnessing a murder, to being kidnapped, to having to rush her dying sister to the hospital while combatting global terrorists who want what a dying shopkeeper gave to her, the scroll. This parchment had mighty powers, it is an incredibly story that unfolds and I don't want to spoil too much of it, but suffice to say this novel will leave you breathless!!!!

Universal Principals...

This book is about universal principles relating to Christian teachings. However, these universal principles were created by God and are taught quite extensively throughout the Word. For example; Pat speaks of the law of reciprocity which the unsaved world calls "karma". Jesus taught reciprocity when he said "Give and it shall be given to you." Newton even taught about it: "For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction." Pat explains this principle and many more as how they relate to the Word and how they can work in your lives. If you're looking for no nonsense, Bible based yet scientifically grounded teachings...read this book!

I only can hope that this book sheds light on to the athiest world that we live in. If things don't start changing around here a little bit I am gonna have to convert over to Islam or something. I need some God in my life, you know, salvation and all that jazz. Pat R. brings it on like donkey kong. He knows how to throw out some zingers and boy is he smart. One time he said he couldn't understand how evolution takes place and so he prayed to the lord and the lord said 6,000 years is all it takes my son. I mean wow who would of thought that to the answer to all are problems could be solved by a little discussion with Christ. Also, Pat is a healer - I once witnessed him telling the world that he saw a women with no brain in his vision and he said lord give her a brain and then Pat R. said she has a brain. I wish the world knew the Pat R that I know. Read this book and you too can heal - ...

This book shows you how to apply the principles given by Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount to your life. Pat Robertson is saying, these are the principles of God's invisible kingdom, if you apply them you will experience the results of doing so. Applying principles is one thing, knowing the God Who gave the principles takes you a step further and that is encouraged in this book also. Learning about God and His ways is wonder-filled, i.e., abundant living. This book encourages you to tap resources beyond the physical, to learn how God's kingdom operates.

Meet N.

She may be your next-door neighbor or someone who lives down the block. Maybe she is a relative or just a person you happen to see when shopping at the local grocery store. N. has struggles on the rugged track of life - divorced mother, rocky finances, a relationship falling apart - but it's the shadows which lurk in the deepest regions of the soul that seem to be consuming her.

Author Diane Johnson takes the reader on a wild ride of raw emotions, quirky feelings and fears as N. tries to find love - and answers - in all the wrong places. She does a masterful job in developing N. and a wealth of supporting characters, with each one playing a believable role in a story that is rich in imagery and a plot that - like life - takes an unpredictable twist in the end.

And the consequences to shine a strong light on those shadows may be very chilling.

Wry, Tongue-in-Cheek Tale That Can Reach Many Women
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 14 total.
Review Date: 2002-09-12
This is one of the best books I've ever read. It has a tete-a-tete, intimate style (characteristic of many novels written by women from the '60s to the present). You feel as though you are talking to your best friend, who is telling in an informal way a fascinating story whose events are very bizarre and--and this is what makes this book brilliant--very familiar.

The protagonist speaks in the first person. It is the voice of a middle-class American housewife of the '60s. She is thoughtful and sensitive; she is perceptive; she is mild mannered--even a little self-effacing. She is a devoted and nurturing mother of several kids. She has a warm, gentle, bemused jenny-wren-like quality, not unlike many women we have known and loved.

She is recently divorced from her husband because they were emotionally incompatible.

Here's where the story starts to veer slightly to the left of center. The protagonist, although apparently middle class, is living in a public housing development, because divorce has left her in financial straits with several children to raise. And the character seems to become more anomalous when she starts getting death threats. She gets threatening telephone calls, finds dead animals placed on her car windshield, and threatening amulets in her mailbox. This gentle, mild-mannered, self-effacing, healthy, normal, and conscientious woman is being threatened with death.

For the rest of the novel, our heroine casts about in her thoughts, memories, and fantasies, with greater and greater intensity, to think of who might want to kill her.

And as she ponders this mystery, she puts together a longer and longer list of people who might like to kill her.

At this point, we begin to see the black humor peeping out of the structure of this novel, somewhat akin to ARSENIC AND OLD LACE. Femininity, daintiness, nurturance poised against death and violence.

And this is where the novel finally becomes most radical, most improbable, most bizarre. A wry, subtle humor becomes more and more apparent, as we realize that no matter how truly sweet, how mild mannered, how gentle, how nurturing this prototypical woman is, she still has a very long list of people who would like to kill her.

Diane Johnson makes us want to know who the culprit is, and at the same time she has us laughing and nodding in recognition--that women in general have many virulent enemies--even a woman of valor and sweetness; that the most stable, sane, and healthy people have bizarre currents running underneath their lives and threatening to engulf them.

And that, along with the author's brilliant writing style, is what endeared this book to me.

Note:
This is not a review of the Romance Novel by Diane Johnson. This is a review of the 1977 School Textbook "The Shadow Knows" it is a book of Old Time Radio Scripts of the radio series The Shadow.

ISBN: 0-673-03533-6

The Shadow was on the air from 1937 until 1954 one of the longest running Mystery/ Drama series from radio's best and brightest years.

The Text book has many many episodes that do not survive other than in script form. This book is out of print so if you are a fan of the Shadow, and want to read episodes that are 'truly' lost. Find this book. It's out of print and quite hard to find but worth the effort.

Diane Johnson writes with great sensitivity and skill about a divorced woman with four children, a lover, and ANGST. Her protagonist's interior monologues describe the paranoia engendered by the dislocations and unpredictability of modern life. About halfway through the novel, I found the themes too repetitious and I stopped caring. My ennui ultimately marred my appreciation for this well-written novel.

His partner in mischief is a parrot named Stickybeak Syd, who helps Slinky topple furniture, unravel scarves, tip over vases and generally wreak havoc. And the big twist at the end? The humans *don't* come back and put an end to the hijinks! Once again, Dodd crafts a nice, fun book, with a rollicking plot and an effective rhyme scheme... If your kid values meyhem, this is definitely worth checking out!

Slinky Malinki, the cat reformed from the ways of night burglaring, is back and joined by a parrot named Stickybeak Syd. Together the two of them begin to raise a ruckus as they work their way through the house room by room. It is up to the black cat to jump and open each door. Then, togther, cat and bird play and make a shambles of what they find. But with the last door there is a sound on the other side. What can it be? The curious cat has to find out so taking a jump the door is opened.

Another wonderful story from the creator of Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy. Once again the author combines lyrical rhymes with repeated actions to create a fun-filled tale. Like with RUMPUS AT THE VET, this one has an open ending that readers can fill in with their own imagination. Fans of the author's books will appreciate and recognize the cameos that occur. All in all a fine addition to any children's collection. Check out Lynley Dodd's other wonderful books and see why she is often referred to as the Dr. Seuss of New Zealand.

My sons (4 & 2) have enjoyed this book for years now. My 2 year old can't quite pronounce the title, but we know when he says "i-i-nky ma-inky" that he wants us to read it to him-- over and over! The mischief Slinky Malinki and Stickybeak Sid get into is just hilarious, going room to room wreaking havoc. The surprise at the end is just as fun! The rhythm and rhyme in this book is first rate, helping keep little ones interested.

Apparently interfering in planetary evolution is not the done thing, so some of the former's colleagues summon him home for a good old fashioned trial.

This leaves one of them left on Earth to give himself a promotion, and replace himself in the underworld sense with someone not to many people will be happy with, either.

I first read this book and it's prequeal (Waiting for the Galactic Bus) about ten years ago. Since then, I've read it three more times, getting something new each time. The last time I read it, I actually took notes on some of the historical characters - especially the two very important incognito figures. This story has many levels it can be enjoyed on, the most obvious being a comical farce; moving deeper there's a lot of serious philosophy here and a scathing examination of the American ideals of Freedom vs. America's religious revisionists determined to make us a 'Christian Nation'. All in all, an excellent read!

REVIEW OF "THE SNAKE OIL WARS"

Author: PARKE GODWIN, 1989

Submitted by Sandy Buckingham, Daytona Beach, Florida (1998)

Though THE SNAKE OIL WARS was written almost 10 years ago, it is most apropos to this age of burgeoning religiosity in American politics, bombings and killings by Christian fanatics and more and more breaches in laws and principles that would protect our rights to privacy and freedom of choice. SNAKE OIL WARS astounds by being a satire on America's Puritanical decade of the 90's, written prior to the fact. Is this prophecy or what?

No, this is hardly prophecy, for the author takes us on a whirlwind tour of the history of religious fanaticism, and especially the historical foundations of what we now call the "Christian Right" movement. He then shows the logical conclusion of the movement: a fascist theocracy in which science, technology and medicine is subject to "snake oil salesmen" and in which the poor and those less fortunate than ourselves are scorned just because they do not seem to show the "visible signs of God's favor".

This is "must" reading for anyone who wants to know the basic principles behind why Americans increasingly are losing their privacy rights, why freedom of choice is being made to sound like a dirty word, and what the real agenda of the "Christian Right" is.

It is also "must" reading for anyone in the "Christian Right" movement who would like to know the foundation and logical outcome of the movement. Do we really want to live in a country in which our houses and lives are exposed to an "inerrant writ", where the right to privacy is extinguished, and "legal judgment (is made) on the most personal matters"?

In conclusion, I can only quote the erudite author's dedication of the book:

"To those lucid and courageous minds who gave you the Inquisition, the Salem witch trials, Falwell, Robertson and the God-inspired Rule of the Righteous. To those intrepid souls who fight with unflagging zeal to remove from libraries dangerous books they have not read and from theaters those spiritually toxic films they have not seen, believing that thought is a controlled substance and secular thinking hazardous to mental health."

A WHALE OF A TALE

SOUNDING by Hank Searls is without a doubt; "A whale of tale!" I first read this book some 20 years(+) ago. The first edition showed the fluke of a whale as it started it's souding. I have always been interested in things of the ocean and of course, I immedietly bought the book.

I recalled the basic story line after 20 some odd years, and although I had forgotten the specifics, I remembered what a fasinating and enjoyable read it was. Therefore, I ordered the book once again and read it with the enthusiasm of a child reading a classic fairy tale.

Hank Searls is/was a master of anthromorphism, and his research knowledge of the Sperm Whale only serves to enhance it's character.

The reader is plunged into the dark abyss of the seas and witin the belly of a sunken Russian submarine all in one book. Hank Searls weaves a fine tapestry of drama and suspense in the lives of the Sperm Whale and Mankind.

A great read, a fun read, and one well worth enjoying!!

I can't believe I missed this book these many years, but then the title is not descriptive until you read the book and much like "Watership Down" does not at first glance appear offer the depth and breadth to captivate adults as well as children. What a wonderful surprise! This book is now in my personal Top Ten because of the combination of the scope of the story and the beauty of the telling. Mr. Searls immediately validates the scope of his novel by revealing the enchanting facts of his considerable research early on that describe the size and complexity of the sperm whale brain ( the thinking portion is many times larger and more convoluted than man's and was in that advanced state 30 million years before man's ancestors began to grow big brains ). The reader can't help but wonder for what evolutionary advantage that thinking ability began and survives for so long. We don't have to wonder alone as Mr. Searls immerses us in a completely new and expansive world, the society and history of our oft unseen and rarely appreciated cousins, seaborn mammals. If it were only this deep I would love this beautiful story but the truth is he has achieved much greater depth, much like the miles deep dives of the sperm's themselves so hauntingly described here. Among us humans is a deep desire to know we are not alone in our grasp of Life and the Nature of the Universe. Anyone who has ever utterred the words or even had the thought "If they can put a man on the moon, why can't ( here at home ) they...." need look no further. Here is vast wonder that can't help but stir any sensitive reader to a new grasp of the nature of intelligence and what it means to be an "Earthling". It is a solid mile-marker in the journey to view the "oneness" of our rich planet, Mother Earth, including the larger part under water.

Amazing thoughts from a whale

It may sound crazy that this book is from the perspective of a whale, but it is extremely insightful and touching. The whale is recalling his life and the lives of other whales through mental pictures and sounds. He thinks about his kind and their experiences with whalers, other species like dolphin, sharks, etc. and deals with how terribly dangerous humans can be. In a cool twist we also get the thoughts of a soldier on a Russian sub that is trapped, much like the fate of the Russian sub earlier this year. This book is amazing. It once again convinced me of our actions and what we do and don't do and how it can drastically change the world.

I read this about fifteen years ago and I
remember details of the plot to this day.
I was completely awed by the author's ability
to tell a story from a non-human narrator's
perspective. Having been sucked into that
point of view, I was completely captured by
the suspense and excitement of the narrative.
I'm convinced that, if this were not told
from such a radical p.o.v., this would have
been considered one of the best adventure
novels of the decade.

Since then, I've read Cheryl Tardif's beautiful
Whale Song: A Novel and a couple of lesser novels. I think,
after reading them, that the daring pretense
of diving into the consciousness of our most
intelligent fellow mammals creates an
incredible opportunity for us to imagine our-
selves from a distance.

A few years ago, science fiction provided that
opportunity, but today science has overtaken the
fiction. This is a moving, suspenseful story
full of poignant speculation about what it means
to be conscious and part of the living world.

A quickly-read treat and highly recommended.

A one-a-day calendar is the perfect format

Stuff + Cats may indeed = Awesome, but a monthly calendar with the same cat pictures day after day can get tedious. The daily calendar is much better! My only complaint is the occasional low-quality graphics.

makes my day everyday!

I have a cat and it's everyone's favorite game to put stuff on him. So this calendar was a natural fit as a gift. What could be more entertaining than seeing a different cat with stuff on it every day of the year?!
