Having read this book to three to five-year-olds at Halloween for three years running and having it be a HUGE hit every time, I decided to get my own copy. The children love the repetitiveness of it and the spooky pictures. The tension builds and builds right to the end when everything turns out to be just fine. (Note: That's a total of 180 children with very big eyes and almost no wiggles!)

The artwork is beautiful and detailed. My three year old loves to find the cat in each picture and to find the faces in the windows, walls, and curtains. One can always find something new in the paintings. The story uses repetitious wording, so he can virtually read it to me. We have read this book many times, yet neither of us ever gets bored with it.

Once upon a time, there was a dark, dark moor...

This "Dark Dark Tale" by Ruth Brown is simple, short and sports a gothic flair. The illustrations (also by Brown) are nothing short of brilliant. Brown the artist captures the fog, shadows and light of her own dark dark little world. Perfect for preschoolers (my two year old loves it and always anticipates the ending), it holds their attention (there can't be more than 120 words in the entire book) with the repetative prose that children love. Perfect for lovers of children literature and childrens illustrations as well (which is what drew me to the book in the first place). We love it and read it daily.

A wonderful choice for young children at Halloween or any time of year. Reading this aloud is lots of fun -- you can make it seem scary as you go through each page, then watch your child's reaction at the end. My son wanted me to read this over and over. We also have fun looking for all the little critters in the forest: owls, bats, tiny glowing eyes peeking out of the dark places, the cat, even a badger!

This book is rather cute and there is a cat that runs through the pages, making an appearance here and there. I loved the fact that this book presents itself as a "dark, dark" book and it really is funny that it is not a "dark" tale at all. The "darkness" is more about the lack of light than it being about evil.

You start in a moor and walk through a woods. Then there is a dark castle and you walk up to the door. Once you enter the castle, you are in a dark hall and go up some dark stairs. You are in a fairy tale castle and then you see a dark passage. You are tempted to look behind a dark curtain and then the cat stands looking up at a dark cupboard.

The last page shows a mouse in a box with a rather frightened look on its face. So the only fear in this book is that the cat has found the mouse. Although it does seem the cat leaves the mouse sleeping happily in his little bed with his miniature candle and miniature slippers.

The beauty of this book is in the art. Ruth Brown studied art at the Birmingham College of Art and the Royal College of Art. She has worked on animated films for the BBC.

Meowingly Cute.

It gave a true depiction of cats and basset hounds - basically that a male basset hound can be a better mother than a mama cat. Okay, so maybe I'm a little biased about bassets...but I love cats, too! It was a delightful book with marvelous illustrations. Great for the little kiddies (and the bigger ones, too!) who love animals.

The Dog Who Had Kittens

The book is an animal fiction story. The story takes place in spring at the dog, boy, and cat's home. And now that there are little paws running around the house things change. First things get worse. Then things turn better for good news. The book is about a cat named Eloise. She is black, white, and grey. She has 7 kittens and 3 of them look like their mom. A dog named Baxter is a basset hound who spends most of his time with the kittens! One day Baxter starts to love the kittens and takes care of them. He has lots of fun with them. There's a boy in the story too and he doesn't let the dog in the kitchen. That's where the kittens are and you know that dogs hate cats.

I really love the book The Dog Who Had Kittens by Polly M. Robertus and published by the trumpet club. It made me laugh finding out that Baxter took care of the kittens cause at the beginning Baxter doesn't want the kittens around. I was excited to see how Baxter fed them and let them use him for their own personal playhouse. I would recommend this book for boys and girls of all ages.

Best Kids Book Ever!!!!!!!!!!

This endearing book is not only a cute story about a dog and cats, but has a deeper message about love and devotion to others not like yourself. Janet Steven's illustrations are humorous! The dog, a Basset Hound, is very expressive, even with all his wrinkles. Anyone who has had to take care of more than a couple of kittens can relate to the picture of Baxter (the dog) spread-eagled on the kitchen floor trying to keep track of the kittens all going separate directions! This book is a present for my 4 1/2 year old son, and I know I'll be reading this story over and over again, to my delight!

"Marvelous, aren't they?"

In this story, Baxter, a family's basset hound, grows affection for the cat, Eloise's newborn kittens. Once they are born, Baxter is forbidden to go near the little babies, but one day, his curiosity over comes him and he wanders into the laundry room, where the kittens stay. To his surprise, they are tiny, blind, weak, and helpless. Since Eloise is not around, he answers to their mews and feels that he must take care of them. Eloise soon finds him near her babies and makes him leave, immediately.
Soon, Eloise trusts Baxter and he plays with and takes care of the kittens. He is there for the kittens all the time.
When the kittens have grown and are sold to other families, Baxter grows lonely and upset. He doesn't know what to do with out seven little fuzz-balls to look after. Eloise sees how sad Baxter is and comforts him. She thanks him for all of his help in taking care of the kittens.
I think that this charming story, written by Polly M. Robertus, sends a message of love and devotion. It is delightful and enjoyable to read. The illustrations of Janet Stevens are humorous and show a great amount of emotion. This book is great for young children and the parents who read it to them. Enjoy!

I did like so many of the other reviewers really like the story about a farmer & his wife and their very happy farm animals who live happily on their farm until one dark night when a shooting star falls from the sky onto this farmers fields that should have been sprouting baby cabbage plants.... and the rest is explained quiet well by the other reviewers.

What I want to tell you that the others did not mention is the the bright beautiful colors that decorate the pages of this book. The colors are brilliant and the illustrations are just too cute! It's nice when the story is well written and is enjoyed by both parent and child, but when the book also illustrated and the colors choosen grab you, then you know what you are holding in your hand is special! Well worth the space in your personal home library!

You'll enjoy this book as much as your kids will

I checked out this book at the local library for my daughter. We kept it for 2 weeks and my husband couldn't get enough of it. I was shocked the first time I heard him read it for bedtime because it was so strange and so true. This story could have only been written by a DAD who was frustrated with too many breeding cats. It helped my husband bring into perspective the positive aspects of our 14 cats. The farmers wife claims they're no more trouble than house plants. I had to laugh at the echo! My daughter had fun picking out all of the soon-to-be cats and all the other details in the bright pictures. I'm on my way to buy it right now.

It's refreshing to see an unpredictable fantasy for picture book readers.

Scott Santoro's FARM-FRESH CATS tells of an ordinary farm day - or so farmer Ray thinks. But instead of nice cabbage heads poking up from the ground, there are nice cat heads... and instead of picking cabbages weeks later, cats are picked. A comet causes chaos - and what will Farmer Ray do with all these cats? It's refreshing to see an unpredictable fantasy for picture book readers.

One of our all time favorites, along with the sequel: Feliciana Meets d'Loup Garou. We took these books out of the library repeatedly when I was still reading to my children. Jump ahead 5 years and now my 12 year old and I just had an emergency need to read these stories again. Luckily they were at the library, and reading them (as other reviewers, with a Cajun accent) was such a wonderful time. Now we feel we must buy these books, because they are treasures. One of the great reasons to become a parent is to get to read such books to children!

Almost as much fun to read as it is for the kids

I've read this one to a class of 2nd graders who were begging for more by the end. The only complaint I got was that I only read the dialogue with a Cajun accent instead of the entire book! I'm watching for more books by this author and plan to buy every one.

My kids (8, 5, and 3) love this story, and it's a book that's fun for a parent to read, especially if you enjoy putting on just a bit of an accent when you read. The language in this story is wonderful, and the book comes complete with a one-page Cajun glossary and pronunciation guide, to help your kids learn just a little about Cajun culture.

Feliciana is a wonderful little girl, strong, spunky, and definitely more spice than sugar. She has a whole passel of brothers, who keep her on her toes.

The story, set in a Cajun bayou, is one that little boys and girls from everywhere will enjoy, since it involves a hungry alligator, who bites off more than he can chew when he goes after Feliciana Feydra LeRoux.

The drawings in this book are terrific. Colorful, funny, and whimsical -- they bring the story to life.

This is a great book that has the rare ability to both entertain and teach, and I highly recommend it.

I'm complaining about the price! To ask over a hundred bucks for a 1991 copyright is ridiculous. I'll defer to everyone else's assessment, both here and other places. It's evidently one of the essential tomes. But when one (like me) is able to find a 2nd edition copy of Saunders Manual of Small Animal Practice, a decidedly expensive book, in mint condition on Ebay, for $35, it's really odd that one can't find even an "acceptable" grade copy of Feline Husbandry--meaning the front and back panels are intact and all the pages are there, in addition to someone else's marginalia, annotations and coffee stains--at a markedly reduced price. Was the print run for this title, like, 1000?

I can only recommend this book(must have) to every cat owner, breeder and Vet.
It is a little bit medical, but with little effort it is good to read.

It has 8 chapters:
1) History of domestic cat and cat breeds
2) Normal genetics, genetics disorders, development anomalies
3) Reproduction and reproductive disorders
4) Common infectious diseases of multiple cat environments
5) Behavior
6) Nutrition and nutritional disorders
7) Toxicology
8) Cattery design and management

What I miss in this book is a extra index within every chapter especially in chapter 4, so I made one my self. So you do not have to search a lot.

Chapter 8 I find to sterile especially for kittens growing up, I want to breed and grow kittens and let them live in a normal family environment and not in cages no matter how beautiful they are.
That you have to have some isolated spaces for diseases or giving birth that is another thing, but for daily living all my cats live with my family in a secure home and garden.
BTW: his first book is also very good: Feline infectious diseases, but also out of print :-((

An invaluable reference for cat fanciers

This is a book I've given to a number of people. It is EXCELLENT for anyone doing cat rescue, fostering cats, doing TNR (trap neuter return, to stabilize cat colonies).

It's not *that* hard to read! Really sets out and discusses many issues and problems of "multi-cat environment" (> 5 cats).

Highly recommended.

It is a really great book and i haven't read anything better in my life. I can't believe how good his books are and I can't stop reading them. I am constantly looking for other books written by him. I love the adventures and can't wait to see whats else is going to happen. I felt as if I was fighting right along side them, fighting the aweful Duke Toma. I cheared when they defeated many of the drake lords, and I wish i could have given Azran what he diserved myself. I love the ending, and I will keep reading more of his books. I recomend this book or any of his other books to anyone of anyage with any sort of imagination!

And about Cabe's mad father Azran, I wish I could have given him what he deservrd by myself. The ending was better than I could have imagined. This was the first book by Richard A. Ok. This book is awsome. Well, I suppose I should write more. I suppose I could tell you that Richard Knack is one of the best writers when it comes to plot twists. I could tell you about how the book grabs you and makes you want to read the book in one sitting (you should be warned at this time that while reading this book time passes at a much faster rate so set an alarm to go off whenever meals are ready). But the two things that make this book so endearing that you will want to read it time and time again are that Knack is possibly the best writer when it comes to battles of sorcery (his unique ideas and perspectives really make the magic come alive) and then there are his characters. Now I have read many books with cookie cutter characters (I know you all know what I mean) but Knacks characters are both unique and ineresting. All of them have something more going on than the story at hand and that is the way it should be. Alright, I'll give an example, stop shouting. Where did darkhorse come from and what are his motives, is he a friend, or is he just following the best coarse for his own motives. You find out in later books but I'm not going to tell you so there! I could tell you all of that but I think "This book is awesome" pretty much sums it up.

Darkhorse gives a little bit of humor to the book and Shade entrances the reader with his unpredictability. This is a must read for all fantasy lovers! Only one question: Why is this series out of print?

I decided to send out this holiday card this year in honor of my 21 year old cat. I've gotten positive feedback about it from a few of the people I've sent it to, including one man who told me that it was among the favorites of the cards which he and his wife had received. Neither he nor his wife are "cat people" but they still liked the card. Another person who made a comment about the card is my cousin in Hungary, who thought the "snow cat" was "cute"! I also chose this card because it said "Happy Holidays", so that I was also able to send it to people who are Jewish, including the couple mentioned above.

This is the first time in about 20 years I've paid full price (well, okay, Amazon's price) for a box of holiday cards. I found them during a targeted search online and fell instantly in love with them.

When I got them, I was completely delighted. The printing and the paper quality were excellent, the photo was clear, sharp, and even more sweet and charming than it was online. The envelopes were very high quality as well, a good heavy stock with a fine, velvety texture (and good glue!).

Worth every penny I paid for them!

This is a great story, strangely and gorgeously illustrated. It is the story of Bobo, a man who makes food for all the animals - only one day a 'funny thing' comes along. It is not an animal, it insists it is an aMinal.

The funny thing won't eat any of the food Bobo has for the animals, but says he loves eating dolls, not just any dolls, the dolls of very good children. Bobo doesn't like this, so he says he has something much better than dolls, and goes to make it. Something which will make the aMinals tail grow longer, and his beautiful blue points on his back get bluer and more beautiful. The aminal likes the sound of htis and waits happily. Bobo goes back to his house and mixes all the animals food in together and makes a jim jill which he gives to the aminal - which loves it. His tail does grow longer - and his points more beautiful.

A wonderful story of goodness, patience and distraction. Nice lessons for children (and adults!) here. Loved the illustrations - from the same author as Too many cats!

When my children were small they got this book from the library every other time we went, and I just ordered it for my grandchildren. Great to read together - ages maybe 4-7.

One of my mother's favorites as a child, and mine too @ 72.

A delightful dragon with an apetite for "jum-jills" sits on top of a mountain devouring them. The drawings beautifully show his tail growing longer and longer as it curls around the peak. I must have a copy for my grandchildren!

At a local used bookstore, while walking along the picture books aisle, I spotted a text that looked like it had at six to seven decades on it's shoulders. The book was The Funny Thing (a first library edition, too), one that I'd heard of, and even more important, one by Wanda Gag. For those of you who don't know, Wanda Gag is perhaps the best picture book author/illustrator of the 20's and 30's. Ms. Gag was the recipient of two Newbery Honor awards (for writting) and two Caldecott Honor awards (for her beautifully-detailed pen-and-ink drawings). And though Ms. Gag wrote only a handful of books, her illustrations were some of the first in picture book history to be recognized as 'real' art. That's what makes each of them special.

Now onto the review. Within the first page of the story, we are introduced to Bobo, a baby-faced man who lives in a cave on top of the mountains all by his lonesome. Well, except for the animals, which Bobo takes time out to feed every day. He even has a stand where animals can feast on an assortment of dainties including, "nut cakes for the fuzzy-tailed squirrels" and "seed puddings for the pretty fluttering birds". Everything goes well for Bobo until on a beautiful day, he encounters an animal that looks like a cross between a dog and a dragon. This 'funny thing', as he calls it, talks, insisting that it is an aMinal, rather than an animal. The funny thing then asks what Bobo has for him to eat. After showing the funny thing all the different types of food he has to offer, and the funny thing rejecting each food, Bobo learns of what The Funny Thing loves to eat. Dolls. Yes, dolls. Bobo is terribly upset that The Funny Thing eats dolls, thinking of all the small children left doll-less by the aminals appetite. So Bobo decides to combine all the foods he has to make something The Funny Thing might actually like. And it works. But there's one problem: The Funny Things tails keeps growing longer and nothing can seem to stop it.

Wanda Gags creativity cannot be matched, and her books are some of the few that are just as good as they were the day they were published. The text in the story, as you may have noticed are hand-lettered. And, like always, the pictures are amazing. I'm tellin' you guys, Wanda Gag's work is some of the best out there.

Imagine my feelings when I couldn't locate my "over 50" years old copy of The Funny Thing! Not only can I repeat the whole story but also my children and their children. Problem is I can't find my copy and without the pictures, I feel a little lost. This book is a tradition in our family and the uncountable times I have served the children "jumjills" has become a family joke. An invaluable book - wonderful story, but then I've always been a Wanda Gag fan - and so are my children and grandchildren.

I'm now on page 24 and can say for sure that this book is a masterpiece and Jim Davis is a genius! There is not a big number of good comics in the world and Garfield is one of them. The book is large and sure is worth your money. But if you don't like reading books that make you feel happy, this one is not for you.

I remembered buying each certain volume for nearly $... each back when I was still in middle school. Now that they have the 3-pack volume out, this is definitely worth buying.

- It saves you money over buying each volume individually
- 3 in 1 fun
- Great way to start collecting the whole Garfield's series
- Great for anyone! Kids, Adults, or even grandparents that love comic books
- Great way to make your kids love reading

Once you buy one, you will want to buy the other 3-pack volumes as well! When you read, be sure to wear a diaper, because it might make you pee in your pants. :)
