Thanks to Momma's Magical Purse, we have a world of possibilities and optimism preserved in the face of a skeptic, who is thereby transformed. With beautiful color, and the expressive depiction of her characters' emotions, Ms. Bogan gives us a treasure of a book with a timeless message, 'Mom can make it happen'.

Momma's Magical Purse is a wonderful read that any child will enjoy, as well as the adult that's reading to the child. I think everyone likes to believe that there is still wonderful magic around. The books makes you want to run around in the sun, in the grass, in the park and just have fun (with your Magical Purse)!

Kids, get ready for some Momma power.
If Momma can't do it, her purse definitely has something inside that can help. Have you ever seen a picnic fly out of a purse? Well, it does in this book. Momma is prepared for anything and everything, and her daughter Rachael knows it. This story will convince any little one with doubt, that Momma's Magical Purse really is magical. And moms, let's face it. Aren't you always prepared?

This series is so fantastic. One thing I really appreciate about it is that it teaches respect for the elderly. This book in particular is my 5 year old son's favorite. It involves several different animals as well as Mr Putter's quirky neighbor. The illustrations are great as usual. Give it a try!

I used the book for my read-aloud story time at the public library. The children, ages 4 through 9, enjoyed the story and the illustrations. It would be an easy book for a reader at about a 1st grade level. The "bat, bat, bat" that the cat did on the fish bowl needed to be explained to the youngest listeners.

I have three sons aged 1, 4 and 6. All of them love the Putter books and this one especially- I think they see similarities between our cat and tabby. Contrary to other reviews, I did not have to explain the 'bat, bat, bat' thing to them- they got it right away- at least the 4 and 6 year old did. Also, they love how Zeke becomes relaxed, sooo relaxed looking at the fish. I'd recommend this series to anyone with preschool- early readers- and to parents who might get tired of reading some of the 'stories' out there without any substance for this age group.

A must-read for cat lovers!

It's true, my six-year-old loves this book. The truly great thing about it, though, is that it is thoroughly entertaining for the adults reading along with her. Everyone who has ever loved a cat, regardless of their age, should read this book. It's priceless.

For last Christmas, I gave my 2 (nearly 3) year old daughter all the Mr. Putter and Tabby books available -- and I eagerly await the newest release: "Write the Book," (because I enjoy them so much myself!) My daughter had all of the books memorized by Spring. The three that make her laugh the most are "Pick the Pears," "Paint the Porch," and, of course, "Feed the Fish." While reading "Feed the Fish," she laughs as soon as we turn to the page were Tabby's pupils are shaped like goldfish silhouettes. Yesterday, I heard her reciting the part where Mr. Putter had to put a pillowcase over the fish bowl so Tabby would finally follow him to bed, although we have not read this particular book for a couple of weeks.

What I love best about the Mr. Putter and Tabby books is that they are about elderly people and their elderly pets in real world situations -- with a twist of humor, of course. (This is in contrast to the many other wonderful books about children, animals, and fantasy.) I believe this series helps a child to realize that in the real world elderly people are very interesting, even when they are restricted by "cranky legs."

Everyone should read this simple, fun book! We bought this for our daughter's 7th birthday because she checked it out of the library so many times over the last few years. We like all of the Mr. Putter and Tabby books, but this one is her favorite. It is well-written, humorous, and perfectly illustrated. There are funny surprises in this story, and it makes us laugh every time we read it. What a great book! We highly recommend Mr. Putter and Tabby Paint the Porch!

My children, ages three and five, adore Mr. Puuter and Tabby, and I believe this is Ms. Rylant's funniest rendition of their adventures so far. When the box arrived, I read the book alone because I couldn't stand to wait. Ms. Rylant uses a nice collection of short and medium-length words for beginning readers, and the story rollicks along. Mr. Howard's illustrations capture the subjects' expressions beautifully. We checked these books out of the library so often that we finally ordered some to keep.

My daughter loved this book. She loved it to pieces. The last time I saw it, she found it in a box of books I was saving for when her children came over, and she pounced on it (yes, she did!) and said, "Oh, my book!"

And took it home. The covers were off. The front cover long lost.
And at the time that I first began to read it to Melyssa, I think she was about 4, we had three cats that hid in boxes, bags, behind furniture and trees. And we all loved the cats and the book!

We picked up a much-loved copy of this book at a garage sale this summer for about 10 cents. The text is great and the pictures are adorable, and my daughter (now 20 months) has loved it ever since we watched out cats playing with a box one day and then got it out to read. This last week she has been totally obsessed and wanted it read to her 10,000 times, and now she'll flip through it, "reading": "MY cat--boxes!"

The book reads:

(p1) My cat likes to hide in boxes.

(p2) The cat from France likes to sing and dance.

(p3) But my cat likes to hide in boxes.

(p4) The cat from Spain flew an airplane.
The cat from France likes to sing and dance.

(p5) But my cat likes to hide in boxes.

and so on, for the cats from Norway, Greece, Japan, etcetc. There are about a dozen different cats who do cool stuff, but in the end, "my cat" still likes to hide in boxes.

The only thing I don't like is that the text about the other cats builds up until it's really long near the end, but I just read about the next cat in line and skip it. Then again, my kid is only 20 months and has a short attention span--for an older kid that wouldn't be much of an issue.

I just bought two copies for Christmas presents. :)

Great book for younger kids...

I remember reading this when I was little - I just recently found it in my parents' basement. I brought it in for my kids at school, and it works great. (I'm a music teacher.) We are singing "There Was an Old Lady who Swallowed a Fly," and this is the same form, building on what came before it. The kids really loved it and could "read" along with me after the first page. I even had them figure out the rhyme without telling them, and they were really proud that they could do it. I wish it were still in print, but I guess that means I just have to hold tight to my copy of it!

I'm so glad someone finally wrote this book! It's all here -- history, myth, spells your kitty can help you perform, info about the different breeds, touching stories by cat "parents" whose kitties showed psychic abilities, interesting scientific facts about cat behaviour, photographs of exotic cats, folktales, cat deities, etc. Only one thing I didn't like. Was it really ncessary to tell us about cat persecutions and actually show us a picture, albeit an old one from some old horrible time, but, you know, to show us? The truth is harsh and I didn't really want to see a chapter on that in a book I love so much. But, that was only one chapter and the rest of the book is truly loveable. Thank you, DJ Conway, for writing about our furry little bundles of love :)

Nirvana was an iconic album of the alternative rock genre. "Classic Rock Albums: Nevermind Nirvana" is just short of the music CD itself in fully understanding the album that made the grunge movement of the early nineties so memorable. Taking a look at the early days of Nirvana's career complete with black and white photographs of the band's early days, information on recording sessions, and information on each track of the million selling album. "Classic Rock Albums: Nevermind Nirvana" is an absolute must have for any Nirvana fan who can't get enough of trivia for the group.

This book gives an excellent account of what led to the great CD we now know as Nevermind. It briefly describes Nirvana's rise to stardom and gives a glimpse into the personalities of the members, but is at its best in describing how the actual production of the album went. Using numerous sources, the author lets us listen to Nevermind in a completely different way. The only downside is that it is a relatively short work, and I left wanting more

This is an excellent book on Nirvana, and it is too sad that it is out-of-print. It contains important interviews and write-ups from several pop culture mags of that era on the band--on performances--on their overall views...

Does this signal that Kurt was right: Grunge is dead?

Well, perhaps dead but not yet interred into the earth.

Yeah, yeah, it's really lame to buy a book about them and all, but this isn't just another stupid ripoff fan book- this is really good stuff. It's funny. It's sad. It gives Courtney a chance to look less evil- I changed my mind about her because of this book. And it's not just about Kurt like most Nirvana books are- there's a good amount of stuff on Krist and the various drummers as well. Serious Nirvana fans really need to read this.

Hollander puts the selective moral outrage and selective acceptance of evidence of the Left on parade as he follows these blinkered one's through the various Potemkin Villages of the Totalitarians, from the October revolution forward into most of the 20th century. Smug arrogance knows no political party or religious faith, no gender, race or sexual preference, it seems to be evenly spread among us. In this instance the highly developed capacity for self-deception of the Left is on trial and an amusing trial at that. Their tortured explanations of the intellectually unexplainable are a fictive of mankind's marvelous ability "to transform things to the liking of his desires".

Like all those who are "blowin' in the wind", these intellectual hard heads do not seek truth, but instead to validate their worldview. This book is a study of intellectuals, estrangement and its consequences.

Reality versus Romaticism

Hollander hits an important nail on its head. Many members of the intellectual left have a horrible track record of either excusing or turning a blind eye to the brutality of socialist dictators. As such, many twentieth century leftists served as apologists for evil socialist dictators. Of course, these same people have no difficulty finding fault with the US and UK. No problem in the West is too small to warrant condemnation in their eyes.

The sad truth is that the vision of an egalitarian society has been romanticized and popularized. Even today there are some who defend and even promote the USSR. Hollander counters this nonsense with evidence. Unfortunately, there are still some ideologues to whom evidence means nothing. We need more scholars like Hollander.

Peace, peace, when there is no peace.

Political Pilgrims is the amazing story of how Western intellectuals embraced Marxist tyrants at the very moment their colleagues were rotting in prison cells, and the common people everyone claimed to be concerned for, were starving. The book relates how cultural and religious leaders from the West, including familiar names, visited the Soviet Union, China, Cuba, and other communist countries, and told the most appalling lies to flatter their hosts and express their contempt for Western society. It is quite an education, as another reviewer put it. Marx's revolutionary myth dominated history for the better part of the 20th Century, and if we are serious about not repeating the errors of that period, this book should be a part of our education. The short story Buddha's Smile in Solzhenitsyn's masterpiece, The First Circle, brilliantly tells the same story, from the point of view of Soviet prisoners. Lewis Feuer's Marx and the Intellectuals compares Marx and Engels themselves with the kind of people Hollander is describing. I also recommend the writings of the Rumanian philosopher, pastor, and former prisoner, Richard Wurmbrand.

Hollander retells George Keenan's story of a Norwegian radical who, when asked what country he most admired, said, "Albania." Keenan noted that the student obviously knew nothing of Albania, but chose that country "simply because it seems to be a club with a particularly sharp nail at the end of it with which to beat one's own society."

The same reactionary psychology has, it seems to me, been transferred in our day to an uncritical and naive attraction towards what is (simplistically) called "eastern religion." One could write an even longer book about how Westerners project their fantasies on monist ideologies: people like Joseph Campbell and Karen Armstrong "explaining" human sacrifice, the Theosophical Society standing up for caste, Arthur C. Clarke (Did he know much more of Asian history than the Albanian radical knew of Albania?) describing Buddhism as "the only faith that never became stained with blood." Even Hollander allowed that, "While the suspension of disbelief has its place in human life, it belongs more to the religious (or asthetic) than the political realm." But his book should be read, in my opinion, as a warning against all forms of ideological naivite. A love of truth, and a determination to tell it no matter how out of fashion it may seem, is essential to integrity in all walks of life. Political Pilgrims vividly illustrates, in the political realm, the evil that can be done when honesty plays second fiddle to fashion.....

Wrong side of history as usually for the intellectuals

This is an awesome book which helps the reader understand why intellectuals always seem to be on the wrong side of history. They loved Communism even when it was obvious that Lenin & Stalin were exterminating hoards of people! They are defective in their thinking and they stick to it. The author has a quote at the beginning of the book. "A GREAT DEAL OF INTELLEGENCE CAN BE INVESTED IN IGNORANCE WHEN THE NEED FOR ILLUSION IS DEEP." (Saul Bellows) . This book walks you through the 'needs' that these intellectuals seem to have which continually seems to cause them to deny the stark realities around them & cling to their 'ideologies'. I am so glad I read this book as I just laugh now when I hear so much of what is on the news. I GET IT!

As pertinent today as it was 25 years ago...

Review Date: 2005-02-09
25 years ago, "Political Pilgrims" documented beyond any doubt the willing self-deception of intellectuals in love with the totalitarian regimes in Cuba, China, the Soviet Union and East Germany. The debate no longer rages over whether these countries were "freer" than their counterparts in the West. They aren't. What hasn't changed, however, is the continued willingness of intellectuals to find paradise anywhere but in the US.

Paul Hollander brings his trademark meticulousness to the study of Intellectuals who travel to what used to be referred to as Worker's Paradises. Using mountains of evidence, one cannot help but be persuaded that Western Intellectuals experience such a depth of alienation from their cultural birthplace, that they become morally blind to the abuses of its antagonists.

What's truly remarkable, is that none of this has changed. One merely needs to point to Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11 and it's grotesque representation of Hussein's Iraq as an innocently peaceful place of playful children and mothers. At no point in that execrable movie does he mention the mass graves or torture chambers.

Michael, post your wish list on Amazon and I'll send you this book. Promise.

How many books do you finish reading and say, "Wow! That was fun!"? That was my reaction to this one. Each story has its own very interesting setting and an appropriate, but often surprising, final punch. I particularly enjoyed the 55-word stories. Very, very clever. I wouldn't have thought it possible to have so much drama in so few words!

I picked up this slim volume on the recommendation of a friend in order to read one story, Thursday in L.A. I really enjoyed the story and started reading another, and then another. I didn't stop until I finished the entire book. It's a terrific collection: funny, witty, and at times deeply disturbing. This book is a real treat and a must read for anyone who wants to discover one of the most enjoyable writers on the scene today. Particularly clever are the "55" stories, all of which are written in under 55 words. Tight, terse and quirky, they remind me of haiku with a plot.

I enjoyed reading the book Rich Cat, Poor Cat! It was about these two cats one is a street cat and is poor, scubby, dirty, no one pays attention to him, and he has to find his own way to live, his own shelter, food, and the other cat is a indoor cat that lives with a very rich family that cleans, feeds, give shelter, and takes care of him! Yes, I think this book is great for kids because it makes you think about all the cats out there that don't have homes! I think children would like to read this book because it teaches you things about cats and you should take care of every pet you own!

A wonderful book, was a favorite of my childhood, and now my childrens favorite. We named our stray kitten Gwendolyn, after the Heroine. A hearwarming story highlighting the differeneces between the haves and have nots.

A few years back, one of the major school market book clubs published a paperback edition of this lovely book. I think it was Scholastic Book Club, but I gave my only copy to a cat lover who adopts and nurtures every feral cat she finds. She has 18 Gwendolyns, and the book made her cry.

This is the best book I have ever read in my entire life! It touched my heart in so many ways. I realized that there is so much good in the world. I am so happy that Gwen found a good home. I have read this book 184 times and every time gets better! Thank you so much!

I received this book from a dear cousin of mine during a time in my life when I was going through a rough patch. It was hard to read at first because of my fragile emotional state--that being said however, it also helped me to read some of the stories because they opened up a side of me that had stayed hidden for a long time. It took about 2 months, but I finally felt ready to read the whole book and it was truly wonderful. It was an emotional roller coaster--but an inspirational one that I needed.

It was great!!!!

There are several books that enlighten you, and this is surely one of them. Then there are books that change you, books that you take with you for the rest of your life, and these you must share with fellow seekers. These are the books that have unconditionally inspired me to be a better person and that I recommend to anyone searching for inspiration. The first is "The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho" this book is all about a shepherd trying to find his treasure. In the end he realizes his treasure was the journey, the people he met, the souls that touched him(How beautiful!) The second is "Siddhartha by Herman Hesse" A brilliant tale of a man who gives up everything for a journey of enlightenment. On his journey he meets the Buddha, he meets ascetics, and he meets his...(I wont spoil it for you). The last one is for kids, but it is still beautiful. "The Butterfly by Jay Singh" is a tale about a caterpillar in search of her smile! One day this caterpillar realizes she can no longer smile anymore because she is living an inauthentic life. She musters the courage to leave the Silk Palace to find her smile and discovers a whole new world that was hidden from her. Buy them, read them, be inspired!

This collection of stories was an amazing celebration of womanhood, including stories of love, life, and tragedy. This compilation covers all the bases of a woman's life from poverty and love in the heart-wrenching story "Christmas in the Silver Egg" to the humorous "I'll Never Understand my Wife," which deals with marriage. A Second Chicken Soup for the Woman's Soul is satisfying, refreshing, and warmhearted.

These stories are heartwarming and encouraging, and even better because they are true. They are all wonderful stories. Some of my favorites are "Safe-Keeping", "The Baby Blanket", "The Wallet", and "Truly Free".
