Great!Review Date: 2006-02-06
When we first opened it (post holiday period) we could not get past the graphics, plot and the feeling of wanting to read it over and over again.
This was a great book to read in between our chapter books. I often find her reading it to herself. I look forward to another bad cat book.
2 Thumbs Up!
Bad cat is a fun cat!Review Date: 2008-02-02
First example: He finds several cans of open paint and a paintbrush in front of a store. He picks up the brush and begins painting in first one color then another. The owner comes out shaking a stick at Bad Cat, chasing him away. When the man discovers the beautiful graffiti on the store front, he calls Bad Cat back. But Bad Cat is singing: "I'm a bad cat, bad cat,/ said that man,/ he thinks I live/ in a garbage can!" as he runs away.
My favorite example: Two rather large people, man and woman, each carrying groceries, slip on a banana peel Bad Cat throws down. They crash into each other, spilling groceries everywhere. Other people grab him, intending to do harm to our Bad Cat. Lying on the sidewalk, the two people look into each other's eyes and fall in love. The people celebrate this wondrous occasion by having a block party. To Bad Cat, they say: "You're not as bad as all that!"
In the last episode Bad Cat meets a character that shows up in the next book, a marmalade cat with glasses, representing perhaps the domesticated cat versus the stray cat with sharp teeth. Bad Cat also represents the desire to think outside the box. You know those children who won't follow directions, but follow the machinations of their own minds to create new ways of doing things. Bad Cat does what others think bad, but ends up creating good--all against a backdrop of intense colors. There's a definite message here.
The illustrations are intensely bold and colorful, created in Photoshop on a Mac. I would love to know how because they are so fabulous! Created by a writer/illustrator, this book is sure to please. I am looking forward to sharing this with my library children! You rule, Bad Cat!

L.A. Johnson for Midwest Book ReviewReview Date: 2003-02-03
The artwork is pleasing to the eye, and each story pairing cat and human is either humorous, heart warming, or touching. Ms. Weinstein's insights into taming feral felines, cat behavior, and maintaining optimum health are priceless.
If you count a cat lover among your family or friends, or if you are a cat lover yourself, Cat Book would be an ideal gift for any reason or season.
I highly recommend it.

Weinstein's creations are awash with colour and life and often make you smile. Some of her pieces look almost avant garde and a few resemble puzzles but the cat hidden away in the bold brush strokes makes his or her presence known eventually. The accompanying narratives and anecdotes only make this slim volume that much more enjoyable.
Ms. Weinstein is a firm supporter of animal shelters, rescue agencies and welfare groups and some of these agencies are using her book as a fund raiser. The last few pages also discuss Neuter/Spaying programs, alternative pet care and other valuable information for pet lovers. Cat Book is a must read, whether you're a cat lover or not...

Intro to WiccaReview Date: 2007-08-18
I'll never forget one character's trek across a hell where maggot-filled raindrops fall and Hitler crawls around as a little worm.
The preacher of the fundamentalist church was creepy carrying around that mummified hand in his shirt pocket-especially when it would move.
Then there was the scientist that had a fetish for torturing cats, and who performed death experiments on animals. Loved the passage when the toad was drifting away to meet his golden toad goddess!
I read this book back in 1988 when I was 13, and all this stuff has stuck with me. This book really challenged my Southern Baptist upbringing (understatment), and Steiber really lead me to consider what really happens after death. I would consider this book to have a theme about the contrast between organized religion and more pagan/"earthy" beliefs.
Finally, I absolutely LOVED the leader of the Wiccans-Constance and the leather garters passed down from preistess to preistess from ancient times.
Strieber wrote this book in his pre-Communion days and includes a note that the fairy characters (with slight stature and large eyes) seen in the book may be a subconscious expression of his memories of the grays.
I highly recommend this book for the sheer imaginative qualities that Streiber used.

Best book I've ever readReview Date: 2002-08-09
A.J.Quinnell is the best author I have ever read. I'm surprised that he isn't required reading for students. I have read all of his books (except one, and that's because I can't find it) and I can honestly say that each one was as enjoyable as the first.
If you are looking for intrigue, fast-paced action, a book that you can't put down and are ready to lose a little sleep at night because you have to read one more chapter, read this book.
One of my FavouritesReview Date: 2005-01-06
Wasnt very long, but the story and realistic was he presents it was incredible... It takes place quite some time ago and I didnt understand some of it due to my lack of history of the USSR and Soviet Union but I managed. What a great book. If you havent read his others, please do so, they are amazing as well !
The Real Deal, Folks!!!Review Date: 2004-08-31
Well, folks...I got news for you! A.J. Quinnell, the author, was the REAL DEAL. As he himself explained, he had been an intelligence officer--a spy. That had been his job. And THAT is why his book seems "so real," aside from the fact that [get ready!!] Mr. Quinnell himself clearly stated--in several television interviews that I witnessed when the book was first released--that his book was taken from FACTS that he had heard in the intelligence circuit. He appeared on all the morning talk shows for about a week.
He said, in fact, that the world of intelligence--just like any other profession--has its coffee houses, "after-set" joints, etc. It's a circuit. And ON that circuit, he learned that Yuri Andropov had been MURDERED by an employ of the Vatican. He decided to write a novel about something that REALLY happened.
To us, it all sounds like conspiracy theory. But he said that it was very natural, during the Cold War, even for enemy spies to meet in Vienna [a well-known gathering place of spies of all kinds, for you young folks who may not have known that], and have dinner, drink liquor, and generally exchange news that they'd heard. It's a profession. They hung out, exchanged ideas, shared news, etc., just like people in any other profession.
He said that he could easily tell, by the pattern of information he was receiving, that the rumors were on target. He would know!
I LOVE this book!! I'm 53 years old. The book came out in the 80s, and I still read it--over and over again. One reviewer hear hit it on the head: the book is, in a sense, very inspirational, in that you feel like anything can be done.
The leader of the Soviet Union, at that time, was the most guarded human being on earth. Yet the Vatican [well, or so the "fiction" goes] was able to plant a fake "kidney specialist" right inside the Kremlin...well, I can't tell you the rest of the book! Read for yourself.
If your life is very busy, and you have many things on your plate, DON'T READ THIS BOOK!! Because, if you do, you'll be HOOKED! You'll be reading it once a week.
Here's what REALLY, REALLY bugs me: How on EARTH has Hollywood missed this novel!!!!! The Cold War is finished. But SOMEBODY should create a flick of this book, before Cold War memories die. [Spielberg, WHERE ARE YOU!!!!!!]

We watch as Bad Cat wanders the city, stumbling into one situation after another - he paints a wall, sprays water, picks flowers, drops a banana peel, bounces on a bed - and always sings songs. People yell "Hey, you, bad cat! Don't you do that!" and only realize after he's long gone that "Bad Cat, Bad Cat, you're not as bad as all that!" Bad Cat is a loner, a bit of a rebel, and probably has an attention deficit problem, but he's also a catalyst who makes good things happen as he jumps from one misadventure into another.
Kids often feel misunderstood by those around them but unable to articulate what really happened - they'll find it very easy to identify with Bad Cat's antics and sheer exuberance and realize that they're "not as bad as all that".
