This is a narrative about a boy who becomes an orphan and is sent to live with some wealthy distant relatives in northern China. This story takes place several decades ago when rich Chinese (in an otherwise very poor country) had compounds with concubines, servants, and some distant relatives who were charity cases. The boy is considered a burden. He works hard and when he is not being mistreated he is basically left on his own. The sad memories, particularly of being unloved, accompany him into adulthood.
