This was my favorite book when I was a kid. It is the only one I really remember and it was one of the things that led me to major in Wildlife Biology. I have since worked on the Bison EIS(Environmental Impact Statement)in Yellowstone National Park. Thanks Shag!

As a child I remember this book as the first I read and gave me the desire to learn more about the west and the days of the pioneer spirt. As I approach the time of becoming a grandmother I will cherish the time I will spend reading this book to my little ones over and over again.

This was my favorite book as a child. It is meatier than the typical children's tome, and filled with simple yet real life information about the buffalo and its environment toward the end of its heyday in the 1870's. I highly recommend this for any parent who wants to introduce their child to a slightly more challenging story that will stimulate the brain and encourage a more advanced intellect, without sacrificing the charm and innocence that a children's volume also needs.

Paul Gobel books are favorites of mine. The Grandchildren ask for them to be read every visit. When I purchased a tipi we were inspired by Mr Gobel's excellent books to create a traditional design with personal meaning.
This book arrived in time for our initial use of the tipi and brought greater meaning to the experience of putting up the tipi and living in it for a week of Camp Grandma. We are looking forward to "furnishing" the tipi next summer.

Excellent and Comprehensive, a must own!

Filled with insights and great respect for this horse culture. I passed a copy on to a friend of Mongolian descent who took it to Mongolia where it was received with great interest and reverence. The artwork and symbolism should be tremendously helpful to future generations of young tribal members and descendants as the memories fade ever further.

A vivid, outstanding survey of the spiritual and culture meaning of the Native American structure.

Paul Goble's TIPI: HOME OF THE NOMADIC BUFFALO HUNTERS blends traditional insights into tipi construction and development with a retelling of old-timers stories and a blending in of art to make for a fine survey of construction techniques, decorations, cultural meaning, and more. TIPI includes over a hundred color illustrations and drawings and makes for a vivid, outstanding survey of the spiritual and culture meaning of the Native American structure.

The battle of Adobe Walls is a little known incident that set the "gold standard" for long range shooting. This book is an excellent reference; I really liked it but it may be a little too much in the "scholarly" style for some readers. If you are interested in shooting or the American West this is a great book for reference and background.

The most in-depth look at the 1874 Adobe Walls post I have found, if you are interested in archaeology, and history of the buffalo hunters site, this is the book for you. The last 3/4 of the book deals with the arch. of the site. First quarter deals with the historical information. Photos of Billy Dixon, J. Wright Mooar, F. J. Leonard, and James N. Hanrahan (operator of the saloon at adobe walls) are included. Photos of many artifacts recovered during arch. excavations, include iron arrow points, grinding stones, iron tools, plate shards, buttons, etc. Great illustrations of the plan layout of the adobe walls site as it was in 1874, as determined by the arch. evidence, including perspective sketches of buildings, and the way each building was constructed. I have nothing but the highest praise for this book and commend the two authors for their publishing the book, as well as A&M press.

If Bill had posters on the wall of his newly built frontier home, they would show Kit Carson and Jim Bridger, frontiersmen and gentlemen both, also Bill's cousin Horace Billings...and Bill's beloved father Isaac.

Like Richard Peck and Harper Lee, Kimmel provides a simple definition of manhood (and womanhood): Stand your ground, keep your cool, do what's needed. Unlike today's hair-trigger instant-microwave world, the 19th century has Horace and Isaac and even Bill talk their way out of danger, rather than reach for fists and firearms.

An Exciting Start to a Fantastic New Series

Bill Cody is only eight-years-old when his twelve-year-old brother, Sammy, is killed while riding a wild horse. He blames himself, and knows that he should have tried harder to get Sammy not to get on the horse, but why would Sammy listen to him? Sammy was a man, Bill was just a kid. So starts TO THE FRONTIER. With the tragedy a few months behind them, the Cody family packs up and decides to leave LeClaire, Iowa, as well as the bad memories that it holds, and head towards the newly established Kansas Territory, where they hope to claim a great piece of land before anyone else can. However, Bill quickly realizes that Kansas is nothing like Iowa, as there's a real city, and the people (especially the men) are rougher than he ever expected they'd be.

As a fan of historical fiction, I was ecstatic to find the new series THE ADVENTURES OF YOUNG BUFFALO BILL in the local Barnes & Noble, and just knew that I had to purchase TO THE FRONTIER, as I've always been interested in reading about Buffalo Bill. What I found was a fantastic new series, that I hope to read more from in the future. Bill is a fun character, who, at the age of eight is wise beyond his years, in both the horse business, as well as the family business. His sisters are fun characters to read about, though they don't make the greatest appearance in this book, and his parents, especially his Pa, are exciting and good-natured. What makes the series even more exciting is the fact that E. Cody Kimmel is a distant relative of Buffalo Bill, so you enjoy reading what she has to write about him. All in all this was a fabulous book, and a must have for anyone interested in cowboys, Buffalo Bill, or historical fiction.

I was looking for a gift for a true western history buff. Many of the books out there sugarcoat the story of the West. This one is the best book I have seen on an amazing man. The details of the adventures along with the non-colorized photos are just excellent. For anyone interested in this section of American history, this book should be on your bookshelf. It's also a very good coffee table book. Highly recommended.

If you enjoy skillfully-crafted character studies, this is the perfect book for you. You will fall in love with the town and people depicted in this excellent read. My only disappointment with this book was that it ended. I found myself missing the characters and wishing I had lived then and could have known them in person. My daughter actually introduced me to the book when it was on her required reading list for an English class when she was in high school. It is a book worth having in your collection to read over and over again every few years. When you read it again, it's like meeting up with an old friend who you haven't seen in years, but can converse with like you had never been apart.

Buffalo Dreams is grounded in Native American Spirituality.
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 1999-11-10
BUFFALO DREAMS is grounded in Native American (Sioux) spirituality including a retelling of the legend of the White Buffalo Calf Woman. The newborn white buffalo calf is the focus of the story, but Sara, the protagonist, learns something about herself as she touches the magic of the calf. Sarah says, "Maybe magic doesn't make you do something special. Maybe you do something special, and it makes magic." Young readers, with an adult's help, can make a dreamcatcher using Doner's clear instructions. The illustrations are delightful, particularly the buffalo clouds. Doner states in the author's note: "For a culture to thrive, Story must be breathed into the mouths of the next generation and ever passed on." BUFFALO DREAMS is a such a story.

In Tears Laughing

Review Date: 2008-09-18

I grew up outside of similarly snowy Rochester, NY, in the 1970s and this book had me crying with laughter and memories - waiting for the bus with frozen hair, parents yelling about the high cost of energy, being able to see your breath in the classroom because it was so cold. Pedersen gets off hilarious one-liners about it being too cold to wet the bed and how kids fought to sleep with the dog for extra heat (we did!), keeping a shovel INSIDE the house (to dig yourself out), cleaning the car windshield at every stoplight, corrosive salt turning cars to rust buckets in just one winter, and religious Catholics crossing themselves while driving on ice, thereby making the roads even more treacherous. Pedersen also focuses on the true grit of good people and how they never let down their neighbors, or a stranger, even in a blizzard. She talks about a neighbor's walk being shoveled with no note, and that's so true. Pedersen does a great short history of the ups and the downs of the area that makes informative and very funny reading. I remember the family fights over the thermostat, money, and the Vietnam War, and unfortunately it feels like those bad times are on us again between another energy crisis, the banking collapse, and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. BUFFALO GAL is a terrific escape into a similar time gone by that we somehow managed to get through. People say they long for the old days when there was a real sense of community and people pulled together in an emergency. Well, it's still right here in Upstate New York.

SNOWY & VERY FUNNY

Raised near Glasgow, Scotland, and a New Yorker for these past 25 years, I admit to never having been to Buffalo. But this is a great personal history of an industrial city (which has a lot in common with Glasgow from a work and weather standpoint) that was highly entertaining and also surprisingly informative. I loved hearing all the local expressions, meeting the resident eccentrics, and understanding how trade and innovation can lead to not only the rise but the fall of a region. Pedersen does a wonderful job at showing how weatherproof locals will not only not be undone, but consistently rise to the challenge of their sleet strewn situation and take pride in what they do have, which includes a lot of neighborliness, ingenuity, and good humor. And of course the Buffalo Bills football team which made it to the Super Bowl four times in a row but lost each time. You can't beat a crowd during the great Blizzard of '77 that's running out of food but takes time to sing "Send in the Plows" to the head of transportation. Pedersen's laugh-out-loud true life stories have made me want to go have some Buffalo chicken wings, only not the extra hot ones where she advises that you'd better put the toilet paper in the fridge.

I was intrigued right from the start. The author combines romance with a touch of suspense and wry humor to create a real winner. A Seattle heroine (okay, it can't be all bad if she's from my home town) gets plunked down in North Dakota with a pregnant bison and a hunk of a ranch foreman. A very nice change of pace from the standard fare I've read lately. The secondary characters are great, and the hero and heroine have plenty to keep them apart. The ending was very satisfying. This is a new author I will want to follow.

I've heard this is a first book, and it is well worth giving it a try! The story is laugh out loud funny at times, but also is a wonderful romance. I spent the entire book trying to figure out how to get to North Dakota to meet a hero like Mike Winterhawk! Get this book and treat yourself to a delightful read!
