There is a small (but growing) subculture of families in the United States with adopted children from Guangxi Province. For us, there have been few (if any) comprehensive English language texts on Zhuang cultural history. Finally, with the publication of this book, a resource exists which explains the origins of the Zhuang, their cultural history back to the Bronze Drum people, and the social ramifications of gaining offical minority status within the PRC.
Holm's book is written at the level of a college text, but is not a difficult read. The quality of his research is high, and the reader gets a real sense of how little contact there has been between Western scholars and the keepers of Guangxi cultural relics.
I am sure that other parents of children from Guangxi will cherish this book as highly as we do, and put it on a special shelf - ready for the day that our girls want to explore their native culture.

I have the pleasure of just completing The Last Buffalo by Eva Hogan. It was heartwarming to read the love and admiration the author holds telling her family's story, and of Mr. Walter E. Potts, the author's grandfather. I thoroughly enjoyed the historical notes which spoke of our nation's role during the Great War, and how the author intertwined her grandfather's military career.
As a reader, I was facinated by the Potts' family history as an example of so many others. As an American, I loved the way Ms. Hogan educated me on parts of our history of which I knew little.
Ms. Hogan inspires us to research our own family histories, to uncover our own personal stories. I feel that I have grown to know Mr. Potts personally, and am amazed by his dedication and love for his country, people and family. Thank you for sharing his story.

Mountain Lions in Arizona, c.1908

This book is an outstanding true account of a trip made by Zane Grey and a plainsman, Buffalo Jones - one of the last. Jones was a famous sportsmen in North America at the turn of the 20th century and Grey a famous author of adventure stories. Unlike many of Grey's fictional novels of the old west, this is an account of a trip made to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon about 1908, for the purpose of tracking and capturing mountain lions. In those days, the North Rim was famous for the number and size of cougars - one mentioned in the book was 10' long, tip of tail to nape of neck, and weighed 300 pounds. The story is riveting with many details of the Arizona high desert and Grand Canyon areas of that era and gives a wonderful account of the Ponderosa Pine forest now known as the Kaibab National Forest. The details given about the behavior of the mountain lion are well worth finding a copy of this classic work. Grey includes a chapter (XV) entitled "Jones on Cougars", in which he relates the wisdom of this plainsman on the species - gained through a long life in the wilderness including a sojourn as a game warden in the Yellowstone National Park, where he captured numerous cougars alive and killed seventy-two. Although modern views of the mountain lion seem to consider this animal more like an oversized, undomesticated sort of house cat, after reading this book you will definitely treat them with appropriate dignity and caution.

This novel, written by Buffalo Bill himself, provides a clear, accurate, and interesting picture of his life. Packed full with his adventures, I couldn't put the book down until the end! Strongly recommended for anyone interested in the formation and history of the American Western Frontier.

The Meanings of Magic: From the Bible to Buffalo Bill stretches the definition of magic, providing essays by nine scholars who focus on cultural magic from early Christianity to Surrealism, alchemy, and American fundamentalism. College-level holdings considering cultural issues and superstition will be especially pleased with the researched, scholarly tone and will find it an excellent addition to any collection strong in intercultural understanding, literary themes, or social history.

The MIA is a parable about modern terrorism.
The publication date predates the DC Sniper, 9/11, and even Oklahoma City, and it looks directly into the heart of evil.
Technology crosses art in the modern world, with tribal impulses and individualized insticts of creativity and violence as hard-wired into the human condition as DNA.
Published in 1994, I the author naively hoped in my dedication that telling this story might illuminate a brighter world for future generations, but in a culture of violence beholden to the likes of Stephen King, The MIA is a horror story of social-science fiction.
Is Orrels Doloshean a modern American Bin Laden? Is Squillace a prototype for Lee Malvo?
There are times when I would like to unwrite or unpublish this fiction novel out of fear that the worst of the imagination could come true.

I'm a 35 year old black male, big, 245lbs, who lives in the rough part of Northeast DC. I'm also a photographer. I wept when I read along with some of these stories and looked at the photos. Real folks, just like you and me. Folks who worry about their mortgages, dislike their boss, happy its Friday, know how to party, have kids, and wife who can't fit in her wedding dress anymore. Snobs like to classify photography: documentary, post modern portraiture, premature ejaculatory something or other - doesn't matter, cause what this is, is real life caught on film. That's it. And its done with such evident love and devotion devoid of tricks that its revelatory as well as relevant.

This CD is wonderful! Buffalo, NY has more to it than snow! Raya let's you know of the Pan American Exposition of 1901 in a well modulated, expressive voice. Every school and library ought to have this wonderful resource! The only piano roll company in America is in Buffalo, NY. The piano rolls, plus a wonderful Steinway and performer who intreprets these piano rolls, are on this CD. Music underscores the spoken word. At the end of the CC all the music is played in its entirety. It is very wonderful and worth hearing again and again. The little booklet which has pictures of the Pan American Exposition also includes the dialogue and additional (not spoken) information. If you are a history buff of American, you need this CD! Enjoy!
