This is a very informative book on the environment. The first chapter teaches us about life on earth and the things that we need to live. The next chapter tells us about threats to the earth such as population growth, the greenhouse effect and air pollution. The third and final chapter is all about things that we can do to help protect the earth such as conserving resource, recycling, and wildlife protection.

What did you like or not like about the book?

I liked the fact that at the end of each chapter has a section called Go Further. This section features vocabulary words, websites, and booklists that kids can look for to learn more.

Would you recommend this book? Why or Why not?

This is a great book for kids ages 8-11 interested in ecology. They will enjoy the mix of pictures and useful information. The book would even make a great resource for report writing

In most industries, those advocating change initiatives (usually consultants) only need to run around warning that the sky is falling in order to be heard - and indeed in many industries the sky does look a bit shaky. Apparently, that claxon-sounding process is a bit more complicated in the banking industry, where no one wants to suggest that something might be, um, unsound. Kern and Dombret have adapted the phrase "a less rosy future" to describe their concerns regarding the issues that European retail banks face today. Make no mistake, however, despite their delicate and responsible phrasing, Kern and Dombret see an immediate need for banks to undergo a serious transformation. The traditional market activities of banks - the value chain - must be broken up into more specialized parts, and banks must find a market segment they can serve, and then adapt to serve it. While the topic is a bit specialized, we strongly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in the future of banking.

Helping and accommodating Florida's wildlife

This well written book, should be useful for both land manager and concerned citizen. For many of Florida's "fragile species", Don presents background natural history research, but most importantly highlights survey and land management methods. For proactive management, this may include the use of fire to manipulate habitat succession, for example to help the gopher tortoise. Wood also sees the opportunity of species coexisting with other land uses, for example caracara and agriculture, or set back distances from eagle nests. He offers some urban strategies such as not feeding sandhill crane, or accommodating burrowing owls. Wood recognized some common problems among the species, such as habitat fragmentation, the need for urban strategies, and the confusion of resident versus winter populations when doing population surveys.

Although the pictures are useful, their use is sometimes uneven. For example, there are three examples of a gopher tortoise burrow, but no picture of salt marsh sparrow habitat. The maps were not always included, e.g., there was no map of the Florida Grasshopper sparrow distribution. I would have also liked some discussion of coastal shorebird and tern species, which would also benefit from human awareness.

This is a good book for a young adult who has a strong interest in pandas and their endangerment. It would also be a great addition to any home school library. It is packed with fascinating facts about pandas & how they live. The book starts out with a profile of the panda bear. This encompasses ancestry, classification, diet, socialization, mating and how they care for their young. Next, a history of how pandas were discovered is covered. The rest of the book is dedicated to the plight of the vanishing pandas including poaching & their threatened habitat. A discussion of captivity & breeding programs, as well as current action plans to save them is also detailed. A glossary & suggested readings are a nice bonus. My only wish was for better pictures. All are small and are in black & white.

This is a fascinating, eclectic collection of observations by a wide range of interests. From the purely academic, to the impassioned researcher, to the perspective of zoos and medical laboratories... Their observations will stretch your mind in all directions.

I have to admit that there were paragraphs that went so deeply into Latin terms that I had to skip over them. But that was rare -- mostly, I appreciated the fact that the authors didn't take their readers for idiots, and totally engaged us in their thinking and their arguments.

The reader is left with the impression that people may have different ideas about what the great apes need to thrive, but all of us are trying our best to give our primate relatives the respect and rights they deserve.

One can't help but be left with an uneasy feeling, however... With all of these great minds, doubtedlessly representing colleagues the world over --WHY CAN'T WE COMBINE OUR EFFORTS TO SAVE THE GREAT APES FROM THEIR COMING DESTRUCTION?

I got this book for my four month old daughter and she (the true critic here) likes it. This is a rather small and short popup book that contains 6 popups of various endangered North American species. The popups are not interactive -- that is, you only have to open the page to make them pop up -- but are clever and filled with bright colors. My daughter seems mesmerized as we turn the pages, and the book holds her attention well. Her reaction is usually something like "aaaaAAAAAAAHGGGGghhhoooOOOOAAaaa!" said with a smile. A sign of a hit! And it's inexpensive to boot.

The last part of the book is for adults, and contains suggestions on how to help protect our endangered wildlife.

This book is beautifully illustrated, and the rhyming text is well versed. It is geared for perhaps the schoolaged child, with the meaning a good one, but hard to grasp for little minds. The story is about the environment and what we can do to protect it, a message that is never too late to teach. The list of endangered or extinct animals at the end of the book will probably grow each and every year. A good book for the animal lover in your family.
