This book teaches about the beauty, uniqueness and dignity of animals. Beautifully illustrated, and full of fun facts, it tells all about exotic endangered and extinct animals. My favourite is the dodo, but there are plenty of animals to entertain and amuse all tastes.

If you are interested in endangered species, then this is the book for you. Not only does the book outline the reasons for the decline and near extinction of the California Condor ... it also talks about other species in the Carrizo Plain that are near extinction. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in the Natural History of the Southern San Joaquin Valley.

Where Have All the Animals Gone?
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2002-06-12
Where have all the animals gone? I hope I never have to hear that question from my children. In the Beginning is a beautiful, hardcover book featuring several animals realistically portrayed in natural, life-like habitats. Oliver Owl is visited one day by a cloud in the form of a dinosaur. The dinosuar warns Oliver that the humans have been unsuccessful in their attempts to preserve the animals and the environment. He bestows Oliver the gift of communication in order to educate all the animals of the forest in how they can help themselves. The animals therefore are telling their own stories rather than having a human narrate their tales. The idea behind the books are to educate children of the growing problems facing our animals and environment in the hopes that these innovative minds of the future can come up with some ideas to save the animal kingdom and their habitat. The illustrations are realistic yet timeless. I believe education on animals and their environment and ways to help should be a part of every child's education and this book provides you with all of the above. It also has contests in the back in which your child can submit artwork or stories that if chosen, will appear in future editions. PRETTY INSPIRING FOR YOUNG MINDS, I'd say!!!

It's a great way to learn about this endangered animal.

When a friend first introduced me to the book, J. Rooker, Manatee, we were in the middle of an endangered species unit with our third grade classes. We shared this unique manatee story with the students, and they were immediately moved by it's contents (the painted illustrations were beautiful, too). The story of J. Rooker helped the children see how easy an animal's life is threatened when humans are careless with motor boats in our waterways. In addition, the children learned a great deal about manatees from the cleverly placed facts in the story, and from the last few "fact pages" in the book. We've recommended this book to many teacher friends in other states and have bought copies for gifts, as well. It's a truly wonderful story!

Jaguars (The Untamed World)

I think the whole Untamed World series is great (see Black Rhinos and Leatherback Turtles), but the jaguar book is particularly good. It is really hard to find good information about jaguars and this book has it all. It includes sections on fascinating facts, folklore, jaguar cubs, special adaptations, jaguar research and even a jaguar quiz. It is listed as being for kids from 9-12, but it works well for teens and adults too. The book has dozens of impressive color photographs. This highly recommended series is great for both home and school libraries.

One of the BEST first books for babies you'll ever "read"
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 1999-12-11
Several years ago, while pregnant with my first child, I began our board book library. This book was one of my first choices and for obvious reasons: the animals are clearly visible to young eyes, not hidden among scenery. And the selection of animals is not dull either- for example, there are a variety of primates to look at and talk about ("This monkey's name is Mandrill. Look at the pretty colors on him. Can you point to the blue part?"). The book is captivating to the youngest and grows as the mind does, too.

By not using the predictable lion for the letter "L", but a lemur, it has even enriched our visits to the zoo. The animals are no longer lumped into "every primate must be a monkey" category. It has prompted wonderful, albeit toddler-level, discussions regarding animals' diet, environment, etc. At the end of the book, Mr. Baalog implores the reader to be sensitive to this world in which we live, and through this book he provides the foundation for a lifetime of love for animals and the environment.

My three children, husband and I have spent countless hours reading and re-reading this book. Thank you, Mr. Baalog for your thoughtful, beautiful and entertaining work!

A scattering of black-and-white photographs enhance these fascinating scientific analyses. Komodo Dragons is enthusiastically recommended reading and a seminal contribution to academic and professional Zoological Studies reference collections.
