In my second grade classroom we did research projects on endangered animals and I was in need of material that my students could read independently. This book was a great source of information for my students and made the information accessible to all. The vibrant color pictures were a selling point for the kids and me!

A well-researched and excellent addition to the series. Keep them coming! The author shows an understanding of the many problems confronting the condor and writes in an easy-to-read, well-organized format. Students and adults will find this a compelling story. School libraries will find this book to be a valuable resource for science and conservation classes. The reader will be left with the desire to follow the future of the condor with interest.

I've been reading this with my five year old son and it gives very interesting facts about desert animals. It has more information than the very basic books and not too overwhelming. It also has pages about both types of camels, so if your child likes camels, this is the book for you.

Stephen M. Younger writes with clarity and authority about the danger of mass destruction in an increasingly multipolar and asymmetrical world. He is pragmatic yet optimistic that we can successfully navigate through an incredibly dangerous epoch. His style is fluid, pithy and memorable as illustrated by his observation - "Hope is not a plan."

Dierdre Luzwick has scraped the blackboard and chilled me to the bonemarrow with her incredible artwork & accompanying quotes. They say people look at a piece of artwork for an average of 6 seconds, but these drawings draw you in like an unveiling mystery. Unfortunately, and very sadly, they depict such hopeless despair for our world and society that they're just a little too close to the bone for comfort. I would love to find copies of her other books, however.

This is an amazing play. It is a clear and modern way to view teens and AIDS. We used this script in my High School. It's content led us to state competition with it. It is truley a powerful piece.

ENDANGERED is more than a simple rehash of extinction theory

Review Date: 2007-02-03
ENDANGERED: WILDLIFE ON THE BRINK OF EXTINCTION by George C. McGaven is the kind of book which has dual appeal: to public libraries seeking an eye-catching overview for general-interest patrons, and to high school and college-level libraries interested in debating the progress and effects of extinction. McGavin is the Acting Curator of Entomology at Oxford University's Museum of Natural History and has researched the world on the topic - so drawing upon his considerable expertise, ENDANGERED is more than a simple rehash of extinction theory as he deftly examines the different types and scales of extinctions and their consequences.

The book tells the story of Karen Strier's 20 year long research among the muriquis, the largest primate of the Americas, on a rain forest conservation unit in Caratinga, state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Karen's findings have enabled her to write a very influential article criticizing the "myth of the typical primate". It is a solid work of primatology and yet very much readable. It contains scholarly work without pedantry. It documents an exemplary scientific carreer dedicated to research and the environment.
