This is would be a great addition to any home library or a fascinating educational gift for any child. It is in full-color on glossy stock and packed with photos of these magnificent creatures.

Rhinos are pictured grazing, socializing & caring for their young. Others are simply resting in fields or taking an afternoon bath. One rhino is even shown with birds on his back.

Also included are dozens of facts about rhinos. Children learn about the rhinos features & classification, as well as the many different rhino types. How rhinos communicate & care for their young are also discussed.

Food, habitat, & folklore are explained as well. There is a section in the back on how the rhinos are vanishing , what steps are being taken to prevent them from becoming extinct, and what can be done to help.

Don Merton is a hero!!

This is a wonderful book. It's the story of the Black Robin and how they were saved. There were only 5 left, and only one was a female. She was already older than breeding age. Don and his crew moved them to predator free Chatham Island. Old Blue (the female Black Robin) suddenly changed mates and started laying eggs. Don had the idea that if he took the young chicks to be fostered by another species, she might lay more eggs. It worked and now there are over 100 Black Robins. I know Don personally, but even if I didn't, he would be a hero to me. Don also saved the Kakapo, the world's largest parrot by weight, and one of the most endangered. He's a genius when it comes to birds, and very humble about it. There must be a special place in Heaven for people like Don Merton.

I used this book in a summer literacy program for kids transitioning to sixth grade. They enjoyed the information presented and the detailed color pictures. I valued the section on folklore and the consideration of differing perspectives on whaling and whale-watching. A very informative book that worked well with sturggling readers.

Excellent history of wildlife re-introduction.

A must for wildlife watchers! This small but impressive book gives us behind the scenes info about how various species were brought back from near extinction in Tennessee to large populations - deer and turkey are two marvelous examples. Markham, via interviews, makes even the failed effort to bring back the red-cockaded woodpecker an interesting story. Many little known facts appear about species we may think we know - the book is worth it just for that. And Markham has done a wonderful job of writing - try it, you'll be facinated!

A colorful look at caimans

"Caimans," by Sam Dollar, is part of the "Animals of the Rain Forest" series. This is a short, easy-to-read book. Included in its 32 pages are a glossary, a short list of relevant Web sites, and an index. A map of the caimans' range puts the subject in geographic perspective.

The clear text delivers the facts effectively, and is well complemented by a rich assortment of crisp, full-color photographs. There are even a couple of photos of cute baby caimans. The text covers the basics: anatomy, how they hunt and eat, life cycle, and different species of caiman. Overall, an informative and visually enjoyable book for young readers.

The landmark work on the California condor

Noel and Helen Snyder have done an incredible job, of capturing the history of the condor, its biology and much of the essence of the politics of high-profile endangered species recovery. While this meticulously researched book that will fulfill a scientist's needs for accuracy and detail, they have managed to relate that information with a personal touch that provides the lay reader with the sense of the adventure that the authors are recounting. They have tiptoed through a political mine field to bring out the stories and facts so necessarily missed or mis-understood by the media and distant observors. While many books are available on the condor, not since Carl Koford's work in the 50's has someone so close to this species told its story.

In my second grade classroom we did research projects on endangered animals and I was in need of material that my students could read independently. This book was a great source of information for my students and made the information accessible to all. Being able to read about the less talked about animals in danger was gratifying and made the book well worth the purchase. The vibrant color pictures were a selling point for the kids and me! I am certain to use this book in years to come for various projects and reading assignments.

helping to save cheetahs
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-09-23
Only about 12,000 cheetahs are left in the wild, and about 3,000 of them are in Namibia in southwestern Africa. Namibia is the location of the Cheetah Conservation Fund, where the author lived and worked while writing this book. The book begins by explaining what the CCF does, saving injured cheetahs and either rehabilitating them and releasing them back into the wild or giving them a good home and food for the rest of their lives. The book also gives information on how cheetahs hunt and live in the wild. It ends with what the reader can do to help this endangered species to survive. It also contains a glossary and an index.

This book is packed with beautiful pictures and detailed information about cheetahs. The author talks about her experiences working with the cheetahs in a very casual, personal way that makes it fun to read. It is a good read for animal lovers who are interested in endangered species. Readers will also be happy to know that portions of the proceeds from the book will be donated to the Cheetah Conservation Fund's programs.
