My boys love this book. We have had it for years, and it is still one that is picked often for story time. What I love most, as a mother, is the educational value, and the interaction with the child. The 'turning of a wheel', is a kind of novelty that not all books have. They have real life pictures of the animals, in all stages of their development. Ducklings, Kittens, Frogs, Rabbits, Lambs, Puppys, Butterflies and Chicks, are represented. When you are looking at the wheel on each page, you read it as if the animal were speaking right to the child.
My boys and I would highly recommend this for any personal library, classroom, or for a gift.

Wish they had more like these!

My nearly 3-year-old daughter absolutely loves this book! She is a huge animal fan. The book is great for even younger children as well. We got the book when she was about 1 1/2 and it has held her interest all this time. My daughter likes to turn the wheel and read each caption under the pictures.

This book caught my eye at the library, so I took it home. It's strange how some things never cross one's mind... did you know that fruit flies were actually our first fellow creatures to go for a ride into space? Cool book. Thanks to the authors for putting the time into this - an enjoyable read!

This book belongs in the library of anyone interested in Space Memorabilia or anyone who wants an understanding of how man finally reached space.
There is a fantastic wealth of information as regards the US portion of the Race but, to some degree, anyone knowledgeable in the US program has come across at least some of this before. What is really mind blowing, at least to this reader, is the wealth of information regarding the Russian portion of the Race. Most of us have heard of Belka and Strelka, the dogs sent by the Russians into space prior to Gagarin's first flight. What we don't know is that they were only two of about 100 dogs who were actively involved in the Program.
The book is filled with photos, charts and tables that make for handy reverence and ease of use.
I would strongly recommend adding this book to any space reference library - or just for a good afternoon's read. You are sure to both learn and enjoy.

One of the Two Best AP Biology Books

I used this book and the Cliffs AP Biology to prepare for the AP Biology exam. I love both of these books and here are my reviews:

Flash cards are cool tools to review your preparation for the exam. I like this style of flash cards though: flash cards in a book. Loose flash cards could be annoying; they are hard to keep together...flash cards in a book are cool..no lost cards...easy to keep them together..Besides, in this book, the flash cards are very much self contained; good and easy to follow answers and explanations....You can use this flash card book with any AP Biology book or without any book...it's not tied to a specific book...The coverage of topics is quite comprehensive and there is lots of space to make your own notes...I love it...

CliffsAP Biology (Cliffs Ap Biology)This book is cool. It's to the point and covers all the topics very concisely. So, that saves you lot of time that you can use elsewhere. However, it gives you all the info that you need to pass the AP Biology exam. It's short and sweet: material is covered in a reader-friendly way; easy to follow, understand, and retain. I used this book in combination with the following book: the Flashcard Quicklet.

I would say these are the only two books you need to pass the exam.

Great book for USMLE and Class

This is one of the best preparations that you can use for epidemiology and biostatistics. The material is very high yield for usmle step 1 and it is an easy text to read. In the past, this text has been criticized for being long. However, I don't think that this kind of criticism has any merit. The text portion of this book is around 75 pages and can be read very quickly. The end consists of a practice test that really pins down the stuff that you need to know. There are also questions throughout the book as you read. Going through the entire text, I finished it in about 4 hours even with a minimal background in the subjects presented! I don't imagine that anyone would take much longer than 6. Keep in mind that this book is devoted to epidemiology and biostatistics, so don't think that it will get you ready for the behavioral science section alone. It will really help you understand the subjects quickly, though. It has been a life saver for my med school class that had terrible notes and lectures. If you need a boost in this subject then this is the book!

I took my USMLE in 1997, I found this review extremel helpfull, I did not have any problemes answering questions in USMLE, which I owe to the great presentation of Info, easy to remember the well organized materials, tables, figures. Now I am a resident, I easily remember the pages, tabletes. I frequently used before journal clubs. I recomended for every USMLE taker. It worth it, it deserve SIX Stars if possible.

This definitive text on aquatic photosynthesis reads like a good novel. It takes the reader on a scientific adventure through the fundamentals of light absorption and the biophysics of the light reactions all the way to the biogeochemistry and evolution. Interspersed throughout the book are particularly interesting anecdotes about everything from the molecular clock to hole burning. A scientific tour de force!

photosynthesis from the subatomic to the global level

Review Date: 1998-12-04
This is an extremely interesting and useful book for anyone working with or needing knowledge of photosynthesis in algae and other aquatic plants. The emphasis on biophysics in the first few chapters sheds a whole new light on the processes of photosynthesis at the most basic level. The information is general and does not give extensive citations to current scientific work, but rather focuses on the historical research leading to current understanding of photosynthesis.

My one criticism so far is with the number of errors, typographical and other, in some of the graphs and figures, making it quite hard to figure out just what is what. Hopefully there will be a revised edition which will correct these.

Another winner from Kingfisher Publications!I just bought this book for my 2 year old daughter and we love it! the pictures are beautiful. The text is well thought out- it is engaging and informative but still will not overwhelm a toddler. I am going to get the rest of the books in this series in hopes that they are all as good.

Food for the Imagination

Written as if the author is speaking directly to the reader, this wonderful book draws the reader into the world of the butterfly. It does a very appropriate job of explaining the life cycle of the butterfly in terms a preschooler can understand. The illustrations are also quite nice, not too detailed or flowery, not too plain. They complement the simple text very well. Especially nice are the ones near the end of the book of the little girl.

However, there are many nice books for preschoolers about butterflies. This particular book's special quality is in the way it invites the reader to imagine what it's like to be a butterfly. My preschoolers greatly enjoy "acting out" the book, starting as a caterpillar eating it's way out of an egg. The text is perfect for a simple preschooler "play". It gives them a creative way to move and physically explore what they've learned.

The ending to the book is very nice, too. Rather than just stopping once the caterpillar turns into a butterfly, or after explaining the common activities of butterflies, the book draws the reader back to reality. The reader doesn't look like a butterfly; the reader looks like, and is, a human child. The book briefly contrasts the differences between the butterfly and the human, listing good things about being a human.

The final pages list interesting facts about butterflies. Most are just a bit too complex for young preschoolers, but early grade school children should appreciate them. The admonition to not touch a butterfly's wings is well done and a nice way to end the book.

This whole series of Backyard Books are an absolute must for every early childhood classroom. The information is written in such a respectful, child-friendly form that the children ask for the books to be re.read. It is in a narrative form but filled with factual information The illustrations are exquisite! I have three of the series and my Kindergarten children are asking for the others! ! !

What a great book! My 2 year old was going through a fear of insects phase and this book helped tremendously. Not only did it educate her on the life cycle of the grasshopper, it did so without talking down to her. Now, she actually looks forward to going outside to "visit all her bugs".

This collection of lectures presented to Professor David Balme is a superb inquiry on Aristotle's natural philosophy by several of the most important contributors to actual understanding of the philosopher of the Lyceum. The book is a masterwork of aristotelian studies that could not be forgotten by those who want to understand Aristotle's conception of nature in a very contemporary and analytical way, and after its publication no academic dissertations on this subject could be accepted without its slow, carefull reading. This collection of lectures presented to Professor David Balme is a superb inquiry on Aristotle's natural philosophy by several of the most important contributors to contemporary understanding of the philosopher of the Lyceum, such as Allan Gotthelf, James G. Book helps engineers looking at an introduction to Biology
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2002-11-28
I was an engineer and interested in learning about Biology. I went to a bookstore and browsed for 4 hours looking for a book that I could comprehend. Only two books fitted the bill - the first one is "Asking about Cells" by a Harvard Professor and the second one is "An Introduction to Genetic Analysis" by Griffith, published by whfreeman. I purchased both the books and I find that they are both good. It helps to read the "Asking about Cells" to put more detailed cellular functions in Griffith's book in perspective. Also, check out the "DNA from the Beginning" tutorial published free online by Cold Spring Harbor Labs. It also gives a glimpse of what is in store.

The main purpose of the book is to remove any phobia one might have towards biology. It neatly explains that Biologists do not know everything about cells (a common misconception of non-biologists). It also shows how they know as much as they know today. Finally, it has passionate interviews from the researchers who say why they continue to do biology daily.

The material is basic enough to be followed, at the same time, informative enough to go to the next level - understanding how genes work. I myself have now become a researcher in biology, thanks to this book. If you have never done biology ever in your life, this book is for you.

i agree with the reviewer below that the stories in this book are quiet, but wonderful. I wish Marvel would buy a clue and continue producing this series of trades and reprint the rest of the back-up stories from the classic X-Men series. A third volume of Vignettes would be easy as there are only 18 more stories to reprint.

X-Men Vinaigrettes vol. 2 collects the short back up stories from Classic X-Men #14-25. These are stories drawn by John Bolton- a wonderful, masterful artist- and written by none other than Chris Claremont himself. They're stories that couldn't be told before due to page limits, or the fact they're personal stories while X-Men thrives on action.

The first story is Lilandra's side of her mind meeting with Xavier, and how it affected her. It also gives a bit of back story before she flees to earth to meet Xavier and the X-Men.

Next is Corsair's story of meeting the Starjammers, but more than that, it's a tale of what happened after Scott and Alex jumped from the burning plane. It's a cool, insightful, well told story and one of my favorites in this collection.

How Banshee met Maeve Rourke and how Tom Cassidy lost her is the next tale. Perfect reading for Siren fans.

There are 3 different Phoenix stories, proving Claremont loves the character he was forced to kill. One involves Mesmero using his powers to turn Jean against the X-Men (I know, how could his powers trump hers? Phoenix was still learning how to use her power at this point). Another is a vacation to Greece story which lays the foundation for becoming the Black Queen. Finally, is a very cute story in which Banshee, Wolverine, and Nightcrawler help Phoenix regain her humanity.

Magneto's story of love gained and lost provides a pivotal turning point for his hatred of humanity.

Two stories feature storm. In one she battles her inner demons and the undead while on vacation, and in the other she's given a chance to become a warrior princess in a galaxy far, far away.

Both Colossus and Nightcrawler have solo stories in which they get to play the hero to beautiful young maidens.

Lastly, Wolverine wraps it all up with a story of what makes an animal and what makes a man.

These might be quiet stories, but they're well done and a treasure for anyone who is an X-Men fan.

Highly Recommended.
