Barbara Goldoftas delivers a moving and insightful illumination of the conflicting forces of politics, economics, religion, and environmentalism in her concise depiction of the destruction of the once-pristine Philippine ecology. Clearly loving the country and its people, Barbara Goldoftas even-handedly explores the reasons for the Philippine's environmental decline, unflinchingly ascribing responsibility where it belongs, yet she offers concrete examples of hope for remedy and remidiation. For realistic environmentalists, this is required reading.

This is an interesting book that describes environmental problems in Philippines from the perspective of a writer who also makes her own perspective very clear. It has useful information about what has happened there, and plenty of colorful anecdotes. A good read for anyone who wants to know about the Philippines.

Everything in this picture book is wonderful: the illustrations, the tone of the text, the amount of biographical and scientific information. This will serve as a fabulous introduction to Mendel's innovative scientific work on genetics for a 5th or 6th grader's science curriculum, or for just general family's enjoyment!

A true biography that reads with the excitement of fiction.

How does genetics work? Gregor Mendle was fascinated by passed-along traits all his life, and overcame poverty to found the science of genetics. He lived the life of a friar and put together an experiment involving growing multiple generations of peas. Kids in grades 3-4 will delight in a true biography that reads with the excitement of fiction.

"Guenons are one of the most specifically diverse groups of living primates, but the true extent of their behavioral, ecological, and phylogenetic diversity has remained largely unappreciated. This exciting volume describes many new aspects of guenon biology. The authors use the diversity of guenons to address, and often question, several major tenets of primate socioecology. Most significantly, this volume thoroughly demolishes the view that guenons are a uniform radiation."

"This book is a cornucopia of recently-gathered knowledge about the natural history of Africa's most species-rich group of anthropoids. The volume is particularly strong on behavioral ecology, but it also presents important new evolutionary analyses and, in a useful section on conservation, makes practical suggestions to address the growing threats posed to the survival of African primates by ever-increasing habitat loss and hunting."

"The Guenons is encyclopedic in its coverage of this remarkably diverse group of primates. From chapters on evolutionary history, behavior, ecology, and conservation, The Guenons also offers a window into the world of primatology, as seen through the lenses of these monkeys and the researchers who study them. Glenn and Cords should be commended for assembling such an impressive set of contributions from so many guenon experts. This volume will be the standard reference on the guenons for many years to come."

"Dhanda applies a case study approach to four timely topics: genetically modified foods, DNA databanking, personalized medicine, and stem cell research. In each case, Dhanda gives a very basic review of the science, discusses the potential benefits of the technology and the ethical issues, and then uses prominent corporate examples to raise relevant issues and draw lessons." Indispensable Guide to Corporate Ethics

Finally, someone has written a book from an insider's perspective that analyzes both bioethics and industry. Having worked in the biotech industry for years, and having an amateur's interest in philosophy and bioethics, I was amazed at how clearly Dhanda was able to synthesize the two. This is a book I wish that I had written, but I cannot imagine how he was able to draw on so much literature from both fields; few in the world could have written such a book due to the immense specialization and division of labor we find in both fields. Not only does Dhanda prove that he understands how both science and business really work (something that I have found few people writing in the field of bioethics have any knowledge of), but he also does a remarkable job of clearly framing the issues confronting the fields today. Guiding Icarus is a book that, while offering insights and wisdom to anyone interested in the general realm of industry, philosophy, and ethics, is particularly recommended to anyone working in biotechnology. Executives in the industry ignore this insightful, indispensable work at their peril.

Imagine if miniature creatures lived tucked away in unnoticed corners of your city? Imagine the adventures those creatures must have when no one is looking! John-Paul Jimenez has discovered such a world by infusing a little bit of science with a whole lot of imagination and creativity. I gave Gutterfish as a gift and both the kids and the parents loved it. I would recommend it to any kid, big or small!

A Great Peak Inside US & Soviet Relations at the Human Level

Hair of the Dog is an immensely interesting tale of the life of an American translator aboard Soviet fishing trawlers during a Joint-Venture in the late 1980s. The story gives insight into the lives of the Soviets and how they lived with constant observation by the political commissars and KGB agents while working alongside the Americans. The friendships formed by the author and the experiences she had as both a translator and representative of America were solid and left me wishing I could have joined her out at sea. The story flows well and was an extremely easy read for anyone interested in Russia, the Soviet Union and the people of both great countries.

She gave a detailed of how the journey would go through out the ship voyage and gives reader a great idea of how brave she was on the ship. This book does not only show the readers that even you only spend most of the time on the ship that you can still have fun and this a once a life time experience. You can imagine how people who sail or working on the ship most of the time, and how they spent their time. It's a great and fuuny book and gives me a imagination of how her journey is.

This is a special book and a very enjoyable read. Oakley perservered in getting it published and we are all the beneficiaries. Give yourself a treat and get a glimpse of US-Soviet relations that few Americans have witnessed. This book is not just a factual account of life at sea; it is a view into the Russian soul and psyche. You will not regret it.

(I'm fifteen years old.)
The reason that I am doing this is because I don't have the access to e-mail.
This is the best book on venom that I have ever read! I have studied this materiel all of my life. I am going to become a zoologist. This book opened up a new world of venomous/poisonous animals. The one thing that it didn't mention; however, was the difference between passivelly venomous and activally venomous. You can kind of say that it is MY theroy. I can't give out my name; but, I will explain it to you. Activally venomous animals like scorpions, snakes, cone shells, etc, use their venom to capture and subdo their prey. Passivally venomous animals like, the platypus, stone fish, etc, use their venom for self defense. The book was great, and I would like to publish one myself. I would love to meet with the author of the book because I could talk about animals for days at a time.

Loved this book

If you read the description you can easily see that this isn't a kids book! I'm a herpetologist and I find this tome both extremely informative and easy to use. There are descriptions of venom chemistry, delivery system, animal habits, the records of how many people were injured and why, and effects on the envenomed in a concise one-book-covers-all way. This isn't for the kiddies nor is it for the average level of interest. The layman may need help with terms and physiological processes.

"Handbook of Comparative Genomics is a pioneering composition illuminating the emerging scientific discipline of comparative evolutionary genomics. Professors Cecilia Saccone and Graziano Pesole have not only provided us with a treasure trove of molecular, structural and compositional information, but more importantly, they have produced a scholarly exegesis of empirical, statistical, bioinformatical, computational, and evolutionary methodology. The Handbook contains both introductory and advanced material, and manages to maintain a degree of lucidity that is as rare as it is indispensable in scientific discourse." Elegant Presentation

Review Date: 2007-01-30
This is the best introduction to ethology I have found: Desmond Morris is a good introduction for someone with no scientific background and "Foundations" by Konrad Lorenz uses words that may confuse the newcomer. If you are intrested in this amazing field this is a must. It has a good theoretical introduction and follows with a well organized guide into conducting a clean research. I am an Electronics graduate and found the book very accessible yet powerfully presented.

An excellent update of a classic
