This is currently the best scorpion book available. The late Gary A. Polis was the world's leading scorpion ecology expert until his tragic death. With chapters written by the world's leading authorities, this book involves all aspects of scorpion biology and can be enjoyed by both researchers and hobbyists. An essential book for all interested in scorpions.
There are quit a few book from Gary A. Polis that are kind of good,,

I read this as an undergraduate while taking a course in medical ethics. I later went on to medical school, and I read a few other texts and many other sources for most of the same material. This book is by far the best of all of these that I've seen. It's almost perfect in the scope it covers and in its readability. It gives a good overview and raises intriguing questions in each section. It almost perfect. I can't recommend it enough. It is well worth a look.

Biomedical Ethics is a wonderful introduction to bioethical issues. The authors' styles of writing are (usually) easily understandable, and the inserted case studies make for interesting reading. More of a textbook than a "quickread".

This is an excellent overview of the myriad of issues that fall under the term "biomedical ethics". This was used as one of the texts for my health care ethics graduate course, and I could actually read this. Although Childress and Beauchamp may be considered the "standards" in the field, they are also when known for being very difficult to read (my prof warned us on day one that their "Introduction" would be very heady, and the warning rang true the moment I opened their book).
This book brings together writings from numerous excellent authors that are all very easy to digest, particularly in light of other "introductions" available. I enjoyed this book immensely. Not only did it help me greatly in my studies, it has also helped me greatly in navigating my own health care. Whether you are reading for academic pursuits, or are otherwise interested enough in the field to buy a book about it, I highly recommend THIS ONE!

This is a good book for bobcat enthusiasts, or those who really like wild cats. It contains all rounded, non-technical coverage on bobcat lineage, appearance, anatomy, behavior, life cycle, ecology, hunting, management and conservation issues. You may like it if you are interested in wild animals and conservation generally.
There are several pages of glossy color photographs in the middle of the book. For a book on bobcats, I would say the more photographs, the better. Photographs help attract young readers, gently easing them into the world of wildlife and conservation. Photographs also attract readers who like wild cats generally but who may not otherwise slog through 200 pages of narratives.
Instilling a love for wild animals is the best strategy for promoting their conservation.

Okay, I confess I'm a big fan of bobcats, so I may be a bit biased, but if you have any interest in these animals, this is a must-have resource. It has up-to-date information on bobcat behavior, biology, habitat, and conservation. The material is well-organized and has a good bit of detail without being unduly technical. The book also has a center section with a few photos. However, don't buy this book if you simply want glossy wild cat pictures (there are better books for that). This is a book for people who like to keep reference books on their favorite animals (yes, I'm one of those).

From the vivid introduction through to the 34-page bibliography, this is a well-constructed story about our crepuscular neighbors the bobcat and Canada lynx. Hansen brings years of field experience, moral sense, and an academic knowledge of bobcats. He outlines research needs and awakens a sense of the increasing dangers to these creatures.
Based on observations by others, tracks in the snow, and scat in the trail, I've been aware that wildcats were nearby. This book, with fine photographs, makes them substantial.

The book and skeleton kit are terrific for any child or adult interested in learning more about the structure of their body and how it works. The book is well written and laid out, easy for any child from about seven to understand. Even though the main focus of the book is on the skeleton each chapter concerns different aspects of the whole body. There are pages on cells, muscles, the circulatory system, the heart, brain and sensory organs, respiration, digestion, the skin and nerves, even a small section on the reproductive organs writen simply to illustrate the difference between male and female and how life begins. The chapter toward the end of the book covering broken bones and sprains is particularly useful for any active child. The very finely detailed scale model of a human male skeleton is excellent. Well worth the purchase price alone. For me or any 1:6 action figure (12" tall) collector, customizer, and sculptor the skeleton takes on hew importance as an artists model and possible fodder for a diorama - the trenches in WWI, or a long forgotten prisoner in the castle dungeon, even archaeological remains (just use your imagination). So overall a very good purchase on many levels at an good price.

I am a homeschooling mom and I am always looking for fun ways to reinforce whatever we are learning. This year, while studying the systems of the human body, I ordered the Bones Book and Skeleton. My daughter had a great time putting the skeleton together while I quizzed her on the name of each bone. When completed, the skeleton can be proudly displayed in the plastic dome that is included in the kit, which keeps it handy for a quick review.
The book itself is not in depth enough to be used alone, but I was able to utilize it as a support tool. The skeleton, once assembled, is sturdy enough to be played with, body actions imitated, made to dance, etc.

I bought this to use for studying anatomy and getting a really good visual concept of the bones and their relationship to each other. It has been fabulous for that. My 6-year old really enjoyed helping me put it together and seeing "what a person looks like inside", so it gave her a great introduction to anatomy as well. A few of the bones were stubborn to connect to each other and the clavicle bone pops out of place easily, but I still think it's a great value. I now use it in my BodyTalk practice as a visual aide with my clients.

The information in Born to be a Butterfly is easy to read and the pictures are crisp, colorful and catches the eye, which draws the reader in. Our household typically loves to read DK books because the pictures are very interesting. My small complaint about Born to be a Butterfly (and also pre-level 1 DK reader "On the Move.") is that some of the photos are across both pages. The crease in the middle makes it difficult to see the whole image in a few cases. A good example is on pages 18-19,where the picture of a chrysalis is in the middle of both pages, cut up by the page crease. It is a small complaint, because the text for born to be a butterfly is great and the pictures are fantastic.

I have always thought that the transformation from caterpillar to butterfly is just amazing. In this story, a butterfly flits from flower to flower and looks for a leaf where she can lay her eggs. The photography is stunning and you can actually see the caterpillar growing inside the egg. Once the caterpillar hatches, she eats and eats and eats.
As the caterpillar gets bigger and bigger, she sheds her skin until finally she looks for a sturdy leaf and hangs upside down. The outside skin turns hard and inside, she is turning into a beautiful creature. One day the chrysalis splits open and a new butterfly emerges to dry in the sunshine.
On the last page, there is a picture word list and your child can sign and date the back cover to remind them of their accomplishment when they are able to completely read this book on their own.
Educational!

For the starting cadaver dog handler this book is a must. I recommend it to all my students. It does an excellent job of detailing the scent imprinting training, establishing a readable alert and the advancement of training. Not only does it cover the handling and training of the dog but discusses in depth the handlers responsibilities and information useful to any agency wishing to deploy the cadaver dog. Excellent information in a basic readable form. Not much experience in scent work needed prior to implementing these techniques. A wealth of information.

Excellent atlas of electron micrographs for histology

Review Date: 2006-10-04
This book consists of ~200 electron micrographs comprehensively reviewing the structures most often seen in histology courses. Each plate is accompanied with a page-long explanation of the image, a brief overview of the histological subject, and an orientation diagram is presented in most places that one is needed. The micrographs are carefully chosen to illustrate points that might be lost in traditional light micrograph pictures. I find that many of the explanations are more clear and concise than those in standard histology texts. The biggest drawback is that the explanations of the letters used to call out key structures on the images are hard to spot while quickly reviewing the text. A short key on each page would be welcome. But this is a minor quibble. This book is a fantastic accompaniment to a 1st year histology text, especially as fewer and fewer of them seem to be including EM images at all these days. Get it if you like to see good, informative, real pictures.

This is a good text. I am a practicing organic and polymer chemist, and I had studied cell-&-molecular biology and histology formally between 1977 and 1984 during undergraduate and graduate training. Periodically I read a review article in cell biology to keep current. With the advent, of non-viral transport of genes and therapeutic agents, I needed a low cost review. The text by Professors Cross and Mecer did the job for me and it is a well marked text on my bookshelf.

The best basic allround book on the subject Cephalopoda. Most books about the Phyla are writen from a neurological aspect, but this one differs. I goes into the complex behaviour of the smartest animals to use gills. I doesn't plunge into the dephts of scientific jargon but stays at a level that most layman understand and any biology undergraduate student should understand. Every chapter ends with a tip about futher studies and serves to water a students interest.

Topics include color change, feeding and foraging, defense, reproduction, communication, learning, and ecology. What's perhaps most striking is how well Hanlon and Messenger explain things. This is a highly readable and fascinating account of these most amazing organisms. This is truly a must-have reference for anyone interested in cephalpods.

Chassin's operative strategy in General Surgery has the most common and essential procedures with the step by step operative technique(s) for use by any general surgery resident at any level. It does cover basic and advanced laparoscopy, choice of incision and closures, knot tying and suture strategies. As a PGY-2 surgery resident who spends 1/3 of the year at a busy private state of the art "Operative Factory" where the Intern operates about 4 days a week and and sometimes during the night on-call, this is a very useful guide.
It is also an easy read and excellent companion to any thorough General Surgery Text.

The price may be off-putting but to the serious surgical trainee, they will see this book as an invaluable investment.

I've been practicing for 3 years now, and I still refer to this book. It's a very practical text with clear illustrations, good text, and potential pitfalls. It also includes "legacy" procedures -- those operations that don't come up too often, but you will still need to perform once in a while -- and it's nice to brush up on them.
I've got Zollinger, Sabiston, and a couple older atlases -- but this is my favorite.

I know that Zollinger's and Sabiston are the standard reccommended readings. If you have the money to go ahead and get them, but if you are on a budget like most residents the one book you can't pass up is Chassin's. It is clear, current, offers basic tips and explains common pitfalls. The diagrams and pictures are fabulous. You will definately be prepared for any OR case if you review this book the night before.

I first came across the book when a family came into my office with it. The kids were around 5 years old and loved the book. The pop-ups, pull-tabs, and flip-ups looked so fun that I went on a search for the book. The book store in town carries the book for $20 and Amazon carries it for nearly half the price. While the book is fun to read (pull a sticky tongue, stretch out intestines, spin a stomach wheel, and more) you also have a better understanding of the digestive system - without really trying! I know keep my copy of the book in my office and highly recommend it to kids and adults. Too bad more books aren't done with this much fun.
This book is gross & fun

"Chewy, Gooey, Rumble, Plop!" is a very exciting book about how poop is formed. The grossness starts on the front cover with a fake tongue that is so real I screamed. My mom thought it was disgusting, too. She said to put the book away before she threw up from looking at it!
First we learn about the mouth and how we taste our food. The four tastes are bitter, sour, salty and sweet. Once you get a little deeper in the book it got even more disgusting. This book has all sort of tabs to pull, pop-ups, close-up real photos of things inside the body, and diagrams and foul facts. You learn about throwing up, stomach juices, and how our intestines make poop.
The book ends with a child on the toilet. You can use your imagination to figure out what he is doing there. I used my imagination to make farting noises to help tell the story. "Chewy, Gooey, Rumble, Plop!" is gross but fun to read!

I purchased a book called "The Pop-up Book of Phobias" for one of my daughters who happens to be a Clinical Psychologist for Christmas this year and when I happened across this book while browsing around BJ's the other day I just had to get it for my other daughter who is a Pediatrician! The book is adorable: tons of popups, lots of good accurate information and a really uckky feeling "tongue" that sticks out from the cover. It's written for kids but I suspect it will be a bigger hit among adults. I'm more excited about exchanging gifts this year than my grandchildren are! I think I'll make the girls open their books at the same time!
THis book is a HIT!
