If you're looking for a good, but VERY basic review book, this one is great. I did not make it through the whole book, but the parts I read were very clearly written. However, it is VERY basic. If you're using this book to study for something like the GRE or the Praxis II exam, you will need another book in addition to this one. But it's a good start if you need a good basic background in biology.

I found this book to help a lot when studying the structure of DNA, Genetics and five kingdoms. I was assigned Campell's Biology for my undergrad biology 1 and 2 classes. Although this textbook had every topic imaginable about college biology, I found Biology Made Simple easier to comprehend. I also used
The Ultimate Study Guide for Biology: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations by Patrick Leonardi
Vol 1
Vol 2
Vol 3
These last three study guides were so good for preparing me for the type of questions to look out for on my bio midterms and finals. They helped me get excellent grades.

I just took Biology for the first time in College but during the summer session. Without this book I don't know what I would've done. A whole semester was cut down to a month so absorbing material was a matter of life or fail. This book help me understand what seemed to be the hardest concept. I totally recommend it.

I like Star Trek, I just am not a fanatic. As such, I hesitated in buying this book. Why should I care if, for example a Klingon and a Vulcan could or would want to mate? They don't exist! Still, after I read the back and skimmed through the chapters, I decided to buy it. It was great fun!

First, this book is based on real science. The writers are well educated. In fact, they are both doctors and they explain real biology in an interesting way that makes it more interesting and accessible to the public. Teachers take note.

But, this book is much more then a teaching tool. The writers are obvious fans of Star Trek and both have a delightful sense of humor. I found myself laughing outloud and sharing some of the stories with my friends. But it is hard for me to describe their humor, with taking away the hard scient. I think the fairest thing to do, is just tell you the title of some of the chapters.

-What the future May hold, but Probably won't -Parasitic Possession is Nine-tenths of the Law or -Where No One Will Ever Go

These chapters are about the probablities of telepathy, real example of parasites on Earth, (and why they are unlikely in space) and examples of big bloopers in Captain Kirk's Universe. Why and what made the Klingons evolve, for example.

Utimately this book is a tribute to Star Trek's attempts to potray science fiction in an accurate and truthful way. Science often inspires science fiction. It is Star Trek's great glory that a science fiction series has inspired this, and other works of science and scientist. Enjoy the Book.

This books answers some of the basic questions that Trekers have been asking for ages:

Why do the old Klingons look different from the new Klingons? Could an alien really take over and control a human body? Can ageing be sped up, stopped or reversed?

A really good read with just the right amount of depth. Recommended.

This book asks many of the strange things about star trek that have puzzled us from the beginning (Is Data alive? Are Changlings possible?). And I think this is the book that said: "The idea that a shapeshifter like Odo would fall in love with a 'solid' like Kira is akin to human falling maddily in love with a turnip." I agree, sorry Odo. And just how did Odo turn into that ball of light when he was with Kira in a recent episode? Matter into energy? KA-BANG!!! Goodbye, DS9! This book also explains that so many "human" aliens is impossible. It also shows why star trek is not my favorite show anymore because of these problems (and repetitive storylines).

As a member of the Tucson Herpetological Society, I have been hearing of the genesis of this book for years. I wondered, "How could a scientist in cold, wet, Washington write about Gilas and Beadeds?"
The answer was simple. Dan Beck spent many long, hot months in the Deserts of Arizona and surrounding states as well as in the Tropical Dry Forests of Mexico and Guatemala.
The result is a book that has been sorely needed for about a half-century. I picked it up and read it straight through in a few days as if it were a novel or a Harry Potter Book. I actually bought the book as a birthday present for my biologist son but after presenting him the first one, found I really needed to get one for myself as an easy reference to keep on my bookshelf.
I do not pretend to understand all the graphs and charts but I know they are necessary. Maybe someday I shall.
What I did like was the easy flow of the words as Dan Beck told the story of two of the most mysterious animals in the world. So little is known about these two species that often, writers are content to say, "They spend 95% of their time underground" or similar. Dan Beck fleshes out the story of why Heloderma spend so much time out of view and, presumably, underground. I also liked the manner in which the author introduced the next chapter in the last few words of the preceding chapter. For example, the last words of Chapter 4 on Physiological Ecology are,"we must consider their use of habitat and patterns of activity." Chapter 5 is appropriately titled, " Habitat Use and Activity Patterns." This is done a number of times but it took me several chapters to catch on.
One thing that greatly impressed me was the author's use of anecdotal information as well as research driven data from trusted sources. Many "stories" would have been dismissed years ago but are now considered as valuable information due to his own research.
Maybe this will be the beginning of a true understanding of these mysterious reptiles.

One of the best written so far.

This is one of those books every serious herpetologist interested in Heloderms should have. As a former zookeeper, this book would have been very helpful in solving some of the smaller problems with breeding the several subspecies of H. suspectum such as charlesbogerti and alvarezi. Anyone who wants to learn more should own this book for their reference collection.

I read this as an undergraduate while taking a course in medical ethics. I later went on to medical school, and I read a few other texts and many other sources for most of the same material. This book is by far the best of all of these that I've seen. It's almost perfect in the scope it covers and in its readability. It gives a good overview and raises intriguing questions in each section. It almost perfect. I can't recommend it enough. It is well worth a look.

This is an excellent overview of the myriad of issues that fall under the term "biomedical ethics". This was used as one of the texts for my health care ethics graduate course, and I could actually read this. Although Childress and Beauchamp may be considered the "standards" in the field, they are also when known for being very difficult to read (my prof warned us on day one that their "Introduction" would be very heady, and the warning rang true the moment I opened their book).

This book brings together writings from numerous excellent authors that are all very easy to digest, particularly in light of other "introductions" available. I enjoyed this book immensely. Not only did it help me greatly in my studies, it has also helped me greatly in navigating my own health care. Whether you are reading for academic pursuits, or are otherwise interested enough in the field to buy a book about it, I highly recommend THIS ONE!

Review Date: 2008-04-17
The book and skeleton kit are terrific for any child or adult interested in learning more about the structure of their body and how it works. The book is well written and laid out, easy for any child from about seven to understand. Even though the main focus of the book is on the skeleton each chapter concerns different aspects of the whole body. There are pages on cells, muscles, the circulatory system, the heart, brain and sensory organs, respiration, digestion, the skin and nerves, even a small section on the reproductive organs writen simply to illustrate the difference between male and female and how life begins. The chapter toward the end of the book covering broken bones and sprains is particularly useful for any active child. The very finely detailed scale model of a human male skeleton is excellent. Well worth the purchase price alone. For me or any 1:6 action figure (12" tall) collector, customizer, and sculptor the skeleton takes on hew importance as an artists model and possible fodder for a diorama - the trenches in WWI, or a long forgotten prisoner in the castle dungeon, even archaeological remains (just use your imagination). So overall a very good purchase on many levels at an good price.

I am a homeschooling mom and I am always looking for fun ways to reinforce whatever we are learning. This year, while studying the systems of the human body, I ordered the Bones Book and Skeleton. My daughter had a great time putting the skeleton together while I quizzed her on the name of each bone. When completed, the skeleton can be proudly displayed in the plastic dome that is included in the kit, which keeps it handy for a quick review.
The book itself is not in depth enough to be used alone, but I was able to utilize it as a support tool. The skeleton, once assembled, is sturdy enough to be played with, body actions imitated, made to dance, etc.

I bought this to use for studying anatomy and getting a really good visual concept of the bones and their relationship to each other. It has been fabulous for that. My 6-year old really enjoyed helping me put it together and seeing "what a person looks like inside", so it gave her a great introduction to anatomy as well. A few of the bones were stubborn to connect to each other and the clavicle bone pops out of place easily, but I still think it's a great value. I now use it in my BodyTalk practice as a visual aide with my clients.

Excellent atlas of electron micrographs for histology
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-10-04
This book consists of ~200 electron micrographs comprehensively reviewing the structures most often seen in histology courses. Each plate is accompanied with a page-long explanation of the image, a brief overview of the histological subject, and an orientation diagram is presented in most places that one is needed. The micrographs are carefully chosen to illustrate points that might be lost in traditional light micrograph pictures. I find that many of the explanations are more clear and concise than those in standard histology texts. The biggest drawback is that the explanations of the letters used to call out key structures on the images are hard to spot while quickly reviewing the text. A short key on each page would be welcome. But this is a minor quibble. This book is a fantastic accompaniment to a 1st year histology text, especially as fewer and fewer of them seem to be including EM images at all these days. Get it if you like to see good, informative, real pictures.

This is a good text. I am a practicing organic and polymer chemist, and I had studied cell-&-molecular biology and histology formally between 1977 and 1984 during undergraduate and graduate training. Periodically I read a review article in cell biology to keep current. With the advent, of non-viral transport of genes and therapeutic agents, I needed a low cost review. The text by Professors Cross and Mecer did the job for me and it is a well marked text on my bookshelf.

The best basic allround book on the subject Cephalopoda. Most books about the Phyla are writen from a neurological aspect, but this one differs. I goes into the complex behaviour of the smartest animals to use gills. I doesn't plunge into the dephts of scientific jargon but stays at a level that most layman understand and any biology undergraduate student should understand. Every chapter ends with a tip about futher studies and serves to water a students interest.

This textbook covers nearly every aspect of cephalopod behavior and the underlying neurophysiological basis. Topics include color change, feeding and foraging, defense, reproduction, communication, learning, and ecology. What's perhaps most striking is how well Hanlon and Messenger explain things. This is a highly readable and fascinating account of these most amazing organisms. This is truly a must-have reference for anyone interested in cephalpods.
