Review from the journal "Economic Record": ......A great strength of the book is its analytical content. The author has succsesfully combined the institutional, formal theory and economic modelling approaches in analyzing China's agricultural reform. He has also succeeded in conveying a clear picture of the past and present problems of China's agricultural sector. His effort in providing an analytical substance is to be commended. ....In summary, this is a book that sets a high standard of research on the impact of economic reform in transitional economies.

This is the seminal source for Biodynamic farming.

Before Organic farming and gardening, a product of the 1960's revival of awareness of the importance of healthy food and environmental awareness there were already healthy roots in Western Mysticism. (Read also Blavatsky, Besant and Leadbeater) In 1926 Rudolph Steiner delivered a series of lectures to a loyal group of Anthroposophists in Koberwitz, Austria. Reading the text of the lectures is a rare, deep draught of the river of arcane knowledge. In order to absorb it, you must float yourself in it and sink down into it, perhaps to drown. This is not a how-to book. There are some very successful applications of the principles and processes described in the lectures in Australia and North America, which includes the Biodynamic Association in Kimberton, Pennsylvania. Organic gardening is only the first step in reclaiming sustainable and healthy agriculture, and the application of the principles outlined in this book may be an important next step.

This is a huge, gorgeous book for the money. In addition to information about every tractor in America, the machines are presented in large, beautiful, color photos. The way the author tells it, the history of the tractor plays a big part in the history of this country, and it makes for good reading even if you are not a tractor enthusiast.

Insights into traditional farming techniques of the Moors

It'd be tempting to place this survey under 'Home and Garden' for this review - but really, ANCIENT AGRICULTURE: ROOTS AND APPLICATION OF SUSTAINABLE FARMING deserves so much more. It'll reach an audience of farmers, gardeners, and history buffs with the first English translation of Obra de Agricultura, offering an early agricultural instruction manual originally written in Spain in 1513 - and holding importance for modern times. Here are insights into traditional farming techniques of the Moors before their expulsion from Spain: techniques which hold surprising relevance to modern farmers facing global warming and water shortages.

A excellent introduction to Iron Age agriculture
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-09-27
The expert in Iron Age farming was the late Peter Reynolds. His now out of print book, Ancient Farming is the perfect place to start your research into the life of the pre-Roman Celts. His experimental archaeology at Butser Ancient Farm lead to insights not found in traditional archaeology. For example, digging up bones tells us what kind of animals lived on an Iron Age British farm, but Dr. Reynold's observations of actually raising the descendants of these animals informs us as to how the livestock were kept and how that could affected choices made by the farmer.

Chapter Contents:
1. Introduction
2. Nature of Evidence - an explanation of the sources for our knowledge
3 The Sequence of Development - the history of ancient peoples' transition from hunter/gatherers to farmer society
4 Farming - Growing, storing and using plants. Raising and making use of animals
5 The Farming Year - the seasonal work
6 Conclusion

Published in 1987, Ancient Farming is the best and still of the very few general audience books describing Iron Age agriculture. Also seeLife in the Iron Age (Cambridge Topic Book), IRON AGE FARM (COLONNADE BOOKS)

That book is an excellent example of a book that the student of animal industry in my university need to take the classes. It is a complete component in wish the student can find all things about the animals physiology, reproduction and management. I was a regular reader of the Any Fools Principles of Dairy Farming in the British magazine Dairy Farmer, this book is every bit as funny, being a Dairy Farmers son myself I could relates to so many of the awkward situations. Dairy cows are really cool animals with a total mind of their own, some are real characters. Excellent.
