It's not just a job, it's a career.
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2001-04-06
Scientists and engineers are indeed a breed apart, and not just in their own minds. They should at least try to find to find a career -- or careers -- and not just a job. In this book, John Borchardt, an experienced chemist and technical writer, describes career management for this breed of professionals. Not only are individual skills and values discussed, but interaction of the individual with the work team, the organization, and the profession are treated as well. Use of computer technology and Net/Web resources are stressed throughout the book in addition to more traditional basics of all of the topics.

The book is divided into 18 chapters in four sections: Professional Skills, Today's New Working World, Job Hunting, and Back to the Beginning. Each Chpater is well referenced including works by such authors as Peter Drucker and Tom Peters.

Times are changing and the author stresses the need for self-evaluation and adaptability. Job performance may not be the only reason for either career advancement or stagnation, but evaluation and improvement of one's performance sure beats the alternative. I recommned this book to all who are -- or want to be -- in a scientific or technical career.

A Must for any Chemistry Undergraduate Looking for Advice!
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-16
This book combines information on the skills, talents and career paths of many different chemists that have pursued nontraditional or alternative careers in chemistry. In addition to all this, the book provides basic information on the interview process, along with helping you list all of your accomplishments and even helping you write a resume. This book is a must for anybody that is not interested in a career in academia and is looking for alternatives. Unfortunately, this book is already out of print from the ACS. If you can find a copy, hang on to it. You will use it for the rest of your career!

A must for an enzymologist

Enzymology was developed in the hands of chemists and can be best appreciated and understood by chemists. That generation set the foundation of enzymology with great elegance and immense patience in a rather artistic and poetic manner.

I was happy enough to reach this book in 2001. Not too late in a career. Its written style is clear and crispy much like running mountain creeks. The insights by the author demonstrate a deep harmony of the theories, experiments and understandings.

Enzymology is not equal to kinetics plus site-specific mutations; enzymology means much more than that. Time has changed and some claims are too easily made. However the true values go on to hold
.
To be serious in enzymology and catalysis, one needs to read this book a few times.

By then it would be hard to claim an enzymologist.

one of the more important books on catalysis

jencks' classic tome "catalysis in chemistry and enzymology" gives such insights into the mechanisms of enzymes which many people are still working with. it's hard to believe this book is as old as it is, given how insightful the material remains.

this should be on the desk of every biochemist and enzymologist, it is that important. what jencks clearly outlines are how the major forms of enzyme reactions work, what their mechanisms are, and how these reactions are catalyzed in terms of kinetics and thermodynamics. only a handful of people can write so clearly and authoritatively, and jencks is near the head of that class. in graduate school i read through this and i am glad i did. i was empowered with insights and knowledge i haven't found elsewhere. on more than one occassion this saved my bacon.

the layout of the book is not only natural but extremely effective. you'll find it easy to navigate and study.

my only complaints with the dover edition is the quality of the binding. given the size of the book, you'll have to crack it open and the binding will weaken. be careful with the book, it's possible you'll wind up with pages falling out afer a few years.

the dover edition is nice in that it adds an important paper by jenck on enzyme-ligand interactions and their energetics (from 1975). don't let the date of this book put you off, it's as relevant as any book from the past five years if not moreso. everyone builds on this, and no one has yet surpassed this material.

It's difficult to wrap one's head around some of the modern catylst chemistry. This book is basically a collection of papers from the 70's which was the springboard for catylitic converters. Many of the papers have nice graphs which show oxide reduction as functions of different things. A good read for anyone trying to make alternative NO2 reduction systems as it's much cheaper to get this book than pay for the articles online.

I am a korean graduate school student majoring environmental eng'g. I think this book is very useful to students who study environmental eng'g, chemical eng'g and automobil eng'g and researchers who work motor companines. There are fundamental information about the catalyst of air pollution control and principals of fuel combustion and production of pollutants from emission and so on. So I'd like to translate this book to korean.

Food for thought

Review Date: 2008-10-05
When I finished reading this fascinating book, I found myself wondering: why have physics and physicists been the subjects of so many biographies, other nonfiction, novels, plays, and even opera - and chemistry and chemists so few? Not for lack of significance: Chemistry is Us. And not for lack of dramatic potential: as Patrick Coffey shows very skillfully, the history of modern chemistry is replete with profound moral quandaries, contentious outsize personalities, and epic quarrels. I recommend Cathedrals of Science to everyone, even if you've forgotten your chemistry (the author stirs it in gently). This is a compelling story, with much food for thought.

A Fascinating Story, Eloquently Told

A remarkable study of a genius, one who's greatest enemy was himself. Coffey's book is scrupulously detailed and brings to life a story of war, politics, deceit, passion and betrayal in the rarefied atmosphere of the scientific elite. It is a riveting account of the psychological, political and scientific struggles that consumed some of the greatest names in chemistry as they sought the Nobel Prize for themselves and as some conspired to deny it to Gilbert Lewis.

It is also a cautionary tale. As we read of the excesses and abuses of government and society in a turbulent period of our history, we are reminded of the social and political unrest of our own time. Coffey writes with wit and wisdom and his biography of Lewis does justice to an amazing man and his extraordinary accomplishments. No background in science is required to enjoy this work, just an appreciation for thorough research and fine writing by an accomplished author.

Any prospective teacher will say that studying for your teacher certification exam is nerve wracking. We have taken the pain out of the equation. Our team includes a textbook editor, college professors, and a biochemist. We have done all of the research, all you need to do is learn the material we generated. We even included problems within the chapters and a test at the back so you can check on your learning. Good luck!
