Quite a short book, but it's not a huge topic. Oriented towards the forensic science arena in the USA, it doesn't offer any tips for internationalizing its summaries, so the international reader is left with little idea of the differences in the way the field is structured. That said, it does summarize the opportunities available for general criminalists, pathologists, toxicologists, crime scene managers and so on, and gives rough salary, training estimates, brief job descriptions, along with example job advertisements for each section.

This book is for any potential students who wish to explore careers in Forensic Science. I purschased this book out of plain curiosity, and this field of science is truly amazing to practically no end. Forensic Science is a fascinating career to discover, and if you are the type of student who needs constant stimulation then you should read this book.

Dr. Shanefield was an improtant colleague and advisor back at my first job with Western Electric Engineering Research Center, Princeton.

Dan gave guidance to me while I worked through a critical problem in a WE ceramic manufacturing process. It was during this period that I learned to focus on the obscure and think. We had a great team.

Well...I am a little (!) biased at the get-go in writing this review since I know Dr. Shanefield in person (in fact his office is next to mine!). This book aims at providing the reader with a sound backround in ceramic processing, as well as the essential "working tools" needed in real life. It is written rather densely. You will find useful information in almost every single sentence of the book. The text is nothing but a reflection of the infamous DJ Shanefield trademark of competence that is recognized all over the world (spanning three successful decades of industrial research).
The book addresses all the main aspects of ceramic processing (from powder characteristics to colloidal processing and sintering) and provides the reader with great insights into the underlying chemical phenomena from an operational point of view. What I particularily like about this book is its very concise summary of the underlying organic chemistry principles of binders. Consequently, the reader does not have to make recourse to organic chemistry books and extract the necessary background information for him/herself. This book, terefore, is a very valuable source in aquiring the threshold amount of information on organic chemistry for an array of applications in processing science.
The book also contains many case studies (including laboratory experiments) at the end that are derived from the author's many years of experience in industry. Many footnotes are included in the book as well, which are very entertaining and educational. In my opinion, the book deserves special recognition since it blends "science" and real life together in a very effective and balanced manner, which some of us simply call Engineering! Specifically, in this book the reader is exposed to problem solving en lieu of being bombarded by a wealth of encyclopedic information which, unfortunately, is the case with many books on this subject. I highly recommend this book to those who want learn more about Ceramic Processing.

Holum does a superb job of explaining a complex topic! (Buy this book, but DON'T share it with anyone! :-) Because of this book, I aced this course. I took this book to class for a presentation. My instructor asked to borrow it. He was so fascinated by the book that he kept it the rest of the semester and he now includes it in his course agenda as an excellent reference book.

This textbook answers the need for an introduction to biochemistry for students who have little or no background in organic chemistry. Although the current edition includes the effective use of color and photos, the student does not drown in 1000+ pages that typlify other popular biochem texts. You don't need to know much about chemistry to get a lot out of this book

these are pretty good flash cards. someone said they were really thin but definitely are not fax paper thin. i wouldn't want them any other way. sometimes you have to carry a lot of these cards around and the thickness is perfect for reliability and ease of use. flash cards are short and sweet and to the point.

These flashcards are an excellent supplement for learning organic chem.

With the sheer number of reactions organic chemistry classes must cover, there's not time to draw out every reaction. And because some professors organize thier units differently from the textbook, textbooks are not much help for learning the specific reaction mechanisms that will let you score high on a test.

These cards are saving me a ton of time in Chem 205, and for that I am extremely grateful.

My only gripe about these flashcards is that they are very thin and pliable, not much stiffer than fax paper. However, considering the number of cards and the low cost, this is to be expected.

Perfect/new condition with VERY fast shipping. Cheapest price I could find, and was significantly cheaper than elsewhere. I had the first lab, and ordered the manual that night assuming that it would not arrive before my next lab, but it did! I was very pleasantly surprised. Thanks!

An inexpensive, yet effective lab manual for undergraduate organic chemistry. The students do not have to buy a hard cover text, full of colors. The reagents used are cheap and, generally, available at low cost. There is great variety of experiments- some are standard syntheses, some are kinetcis, but above all there is a great qualitative analysis chapter. The techniques illustrated in the first few chapters are essential in running high yield syntheses. An excellent set of appendices with subjects like % yield, how to make solutions and how to balance a redox equation. This is a book where one learns how to do expts. without necessarily running a very expensive lab.

This book is simply great. The scholar and very clear presentation by the authors make the subject of each chapter almost self-explanatory. The first two chapters introduce the organic reactions which are relevant in biosynthesis, stereochemistry of biological molecules and the major classes of primary metabolites. In the following chapters the authors discuss, with care and in detail, the biosynthesis of every class of primary metabolite, showing mechanisms for every single reaction. The last chapter on biosynthesis presents examples of some natural products biosynthesis (classical examples). Unfortunately, no example on the biosynthesis of phenylpropanoid derivatives is included. However, even though, the book is worth of purchase for students and teachers interested in the mechanistic aspects of primary and secondary metabolites biosynthesis.

This book is most suitable as an organic chemistry text for biological pathway and would be valuable for undergraduate students. Each of mechanisms are well illustrated with colorful charts. To my reglet, there is no description on the nitrogen fixation. Nevertheless I recommend it as one of the valuable study-aid book.

The author is a professor at the university I attend, so maybe this review is biased, but oh well. The book reveiws many different situations in which the paradox of intention reveals intself. This ranges from the paradox in christian, buddhist and even atheist traditions, showing a possible uniting theme in the way major religious traditons think. The book is easy to understand and well written, as well as an excellent text for comparing buddhism and christianity, which is how I came to read it.

This funny little book is an excelent book for those interested in many types of philosophy. Some might think it is a Lutheran theology while others might say it is existential in nature. I would say that it is both. It covers a wide range of religious traditions and examins the paradox of intention in each of them. It is also very easy to read for those who may not be well versed in philosophical jargon.
