Handbook of Pharmaceutical Excipients
Helpful Votes: 27 out of 27 total.
Review Date: 1999-12-30
This is an excellent book that contains every phamaceutical excipient that I have ever had the need to know about. I work for a dietary supplement manufacturer and we quite often get calls from customers that want to know all about all those "other ingredients" that are listed on product cartons. The book has a section for each excipient and each excipient has the following sections: Nonproprietary Names, Synonyms, Chemical Name and CAS Registry Number, Empirical Formula and Molecular Weight, Structural Formula, Functional Category, Applications in Pharmaceutical Formulation or Technology, Description, Pharmacopeial Specifications, Typical Properties, stability and Storage Conditions, Incompatibilities, Method of Manufacture, Safety, Handling Precautions, Regulatory Status, Pharmacopeias, Related Substances, Comments, Specific References, General References, and Authors. While I have a background in Biology, I found several of the sections to be easy to understand by several of our employees that do not have a science background. While, still, there was highly technical/scientific information as well. Each excipient's information is contained in 2-4 pages. The book is arranged alphabetically which makes finding information easy. In addition, it contains an index that is very well constructed. For example: If you are looking for an Emulsifying Agent, the index lists all the excipients that can be used for that purpose. I can't say enough how easy this book is to use. Its information is pared down to the essential text, and is chocked full of graphs, charts and microscopic photos of the excipients.

Very Practical Reference

Review Date: 2001-02-22
We have used successfully the "Handbook of Radioactivity Analysis" as a reference for training courses on Liquid Scintillation Analysis. The material in the book has been useful for course participants from a wide spectrum of fields including the biochemical, nuclear and environmental sciences, and health physics. The sections on Semiconductor Detectors for those interested in radiation spectral analysis, and Radionuclide Imaging for researchers using electronic autoradiography in the biosciences are also packed with lots of practical information. The book is highly recommended as a reference for anyone who uses radioisotopes as tracers in research or must analyze radioisotopes in all types of media including low-levels in the environment.

The text is very readable. Many illustrations and tables throughout the book provide useful information. Hundreds of cited references and state-of-the-art concepts and procedures are included. Even the most experienced and knowledgeable scientists in the field should find the book useful. I highly recommend the book to anyone interested in the absolute activity analysis of radionuclides used in research or low levels of radioactivity encountered in the environment.

Excelent introduction to process integration.
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 1998-08-26
The goal of targeting (energy, area, unit, cost, etc.) is to address optimum conceptual design prior to actual design. This book provides an excelent introduction for targeting heat exchanger network design and synthesis. This book also covers extended targeting methodologies to address distillation column, CHP, furnace, batch-process, etc. A very good book for students and industry people.

Excellent coverage of process integration

The fundamentals of process integration for better economics in the chemical process industry are explained in this book. The author has done a very good job in providing detailed examples using the popular methodologies of Pinch Analysis and Mathematical Programming. Highly recommended as a text for students and as a handbook for practicing engineers.

HGS Molecular Set a Wonderful Study Tool.
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2005-10-14
This organic chemistry set is very detailed and much more helpful than basic ball-and-stick sets. It is much more representative of the actual structure of a molecule. The instructions are not the greatest, and don't put the information right in your face, but they do help you figure out what kind of bonds to use, etc. I would definately recommend this set for a high-school level or above BioChem or Organic Chem class.

Excellent hands-on learning tool for o-chem
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2004-07-25
This molecular model set is excellent for those who need 3-dimensional visual aids to learn chemical structures. Building the molecules is very helpful in understanding the rules behind organic chemistry and helps the structures stick in your mind. The instructions that come with this modeling set are clear, and the variety of colors makes it easy to learn structure. I just wished there had been more pieces for "oxygen" and "nitrogen" so that I could have used the set for my biochem classes as well. But overall, a great learning tool for organic chemistry!

I initially ordered the wrong edition of this text (Lesson: Be VERY careful when making your purchases from Amazon; note the correct edition of your text! I inadvertently ordered the 5th instead of 6th edition of this book) needless to say I was frantic to get the 6th edition in order to be able to fully participate in the History class I'd taken. The book came overnight and all was again well with the world... Or at least MY world anyway!

Valuable Resource

In this anthology, Chafe and Sitkoff have collected a number of articles that are critical in understanding the major issues in American history during the past 50 years. Despite the broad thematic scope of essays--ranging from post-war foreign policy to the creation of an "urban underclass" during the Reagan administration--the organization and careful editing of the book provide the reader with a clear understanding of America's recent sociopolitical transitions. The lucid and well-written individual essays, submitted by leading historians and well-known political figures, work particularly well alongside the documents and commentaries they are paired with.

Word problems made easy
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2003-12-11
I decided to buy this book while I was enrolled in a general chemistry course, in order to get more practice at solving word problems and to gain better insight at how to do so. This book presents any type of word problem that you are likely to face in a general chemistry class ( stoichiometry, concentrations, gas laws, thermochemistry, electrochemistry, equilibrium, colligative properties, and thermodynamics), and describes how to solve it along with explanations of the concepts involved.

Each section starts with a short description of the theory behind the problems to follow so you gain an understanding of the chemistry behind the problem. Afterward, serveral word problems of that type are fully worked out so a full understanding can be gained. Each chapter concluded with numerous supplementary problems followed by the answers. Highly recommended.

Solid clarification, even for the VERY LOST.

For all those who thought they had substantial mathematical skills and overall capacity for learning chemistry (and realized they were sorely mistaken by the third lecture), THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU. I am a reasonably intelligent person and a really good student, but my ego shrank to infinitesmal proportions when I tried chem in preparation for medical training.

Goldberg's written word sounds like you're sitting in a lecture, only clearer. Don't give up, just get the right way to learn it. Goldberg's writing is a good start.

One of a series of Four

Review Date: 1999-07-16
Volume I covers Monoaromatic Hydrocarbons, Chlorobenzenes, and PCB's. Volume II covers Polynuclear Aromatic Hydrocarbons, Polychlorinated Dioxins, Dibenzofurans. Volume III covers Volatile Organic Chemicals (Hydrocarbons, Halogenated Hydrocarbons & Ethers. Volume IV covers Oxygen, Nitrogen, and Sulfur containing compounds (Alcohols, Aldehydes & Ketones, Phenolic Compounds, Carboxylic Acids, Esters, etc. While the series is not comprehensive, it contains invaluable info. If the compound you want is not listed, they suggest you consider the next closest one. Each book contains physical-chemical data for similarly structured groups of chemical substances which influences their fate in the environments of air, water, soils, sediments and their resident biota. Granted this is a compilation of existing data some of which is incorrectly reported, so one must take the "best fit" approach. These books provida a means of having comparison data readily at hand, helping to overcome the problems of identifying errors and estimating properties. This entire series is essential for all environmental scientists & engineers.
