Another great book by these authorsReview Date: 2001-05-24
Editorial reviewReview Date: 2001-02-04
Comprised essentially of four main parts, the book is a must for research workers in high resolution molecular spectroscopy and in quantum chemistry. It is also highly useful to undergraduate and postgraduate students of physics and chemistry, who are just starting out in the field.
The four main areas covered include:
1. Ab initio calculation of potential energy surfaces and other electronic properties of molecules
2. Perturbation-theory-based and variational approaches to the calculation of spectroscopic data
3. Theory of calculating rovibronic energies, including the Renner and Jahn-Teller effects
4. Special topics of high current interest: highly excited states and local modes, semi-classical approaches, time-dependent phenomena, and the Car-Parrinello approach

EXCELLENTReview Date: 2002-11-24
This ought to be required reading!Review Date: 2002-07-15
What I believe is so great about this book is that it exposes the fallacies in the beliefs people have about certain chemicals, from sugar (and artifical sweeteners), cholesterol, fats, and fiber, painkillers (and other medications), PVC, dioxins, and carbon dioxide (global warming). People are misinformed by the media and even medical sources as to the dangers of these things, when many of these things are actually good for us!
This book was written from a logical viewpoint. John Emsley, who is a great author, discusses both sides of a topic, and really just makes the book interesting.
I believe it should be required reading in high school because then so many kids would be exposed to the fallacies that the media puts out about everything from sugar (It's not bad!) to body health. We as Americans believe so many things blindly without realizing the actual scientific proof. This books is great!

Chock-full of detailed technical information.Review Date: 2001-06-09
Because I am merely an interested layperson, I'd hesitate to buy the book at full price-- I was fortunate enough to find a used copy.
This book was written for professional cosmetics chemists, and contains information about various toiletry products, from toothpaste to hair dye, from shaving cream to lipstick, from hand lotion to contact lens solution. Each chapter briefly discusses the history of the cosmetics product in question, and how it is intended to work, and what are considered to be desirable qualities in a product of that kind. In many cases, formulas for different versions are given. Each chapter has extensive references at the end, and each volume also includes a glossary of trade names for the various products. This glossary is helpful if you are also using older "make cosmetics at home" books (as compared with most of the modern book which are all about smearing guacamole all over your body), as many of these list their ingredients by trade name.
A great book to learn more from if you are the kind of person who really enjoyed "Creating Your Own Cosmetics" by Nikolaus Smeh.

The best description of crystallography anywhereReview Date: 1998-09-04
Crystallography for the undergraduate student.Review Date: 1997-11-20
This crystallography text was prepared for college undergraduates who have had no prior experience of the subject. Even before I became an undergrad student, I recognized the worth of this text (I snapped up the hardcover for $10 at a used book shop; what a bargain!).
Chapters include:
1. External Symmetry
2. Crystal Classes, Axes, and Systems
3. Crystal Nomenclature and Calculations
4. Crystal projections (stereonet etc)
5. Crystal Forms and Class Determination
6. Translational Symmetry: Lattices
7. Internal Symmetry: Space Groups
8. Crystal Chemistry
9. Principles of Crystal Structures
10. Structural Variations, Composition & Stability
11. Physical Properties
12. Crystals and Light
13. Introductory X-ray Crystallography
Atomic Weights, and INDEX.
Each chapter in sections, and most chapters include references and recommended reading, and most include a few exercise questions and answers.
This may be the best text for the student in print. It is lucid, clearly well written (as well as a college text can be expected to be), and treats well a subject which is often found difficult by students. Many a later text refers to this one for much of its information on the subject. You really have to be into crystallography to learn it; if so, consider this text. -DMM
