I used this book in a manufacturing engineering course at SUNY Stonybrook. Since graduating I now work as a process engineer, and I have found the book's content to be highly relevant to the field and I still use it as a reference guide to this day.

A must for the student of manufacturing

I like this book and think it should be in the hands of every manufacturing engineer. Most of the classical manufacturing subjects for example materials technology is treated, but also modern subjects like computer integrated manufacturning systems and automation. As far as I can see it is updated with the latest research and engineering practice.

Classic Manufacturing Technology Working Book [1989 ed]
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 2000-05-26
This is one of 2 books that captures the essence of a manufacturing management (or industrial engineering) engineering undergraduate degree- the other being an operations management text from Ray Wild, Nigel Slack, or Laurie Mullins. To help get an idea of what being a manufacturing engineer involves, prospective students should envision a dose of intense team & individual industry-based change projects, and striving globally competitive companies to add "seasoning" to these books. The broad `technology' contents are useful for industry veterans, consultants, and undergraduate students alike, as well as being a good starting point for researchers.

Over 1000 pages of richly detailed and illustrated yet concise contents span:

* materials properties- metals, behaviour & testing, properties, alloys, production of steels, non-ferrous production, plastics, ceramics, and composites.

* metal casting processes and equipment- fundamentals, processes, and design & economics.

*forming and shaping processes and equipment- rolling, forging, extrusion and drawing, sheet-metal forming, powder metallurgy, forming & shaping plastic & composites, forming & shaping ceramics & glass.

* material removal processes and machines- cutting, tolls & fluids, round-shape processes, various-shape processes, machine tools and economics, abrasive processes & operations, and non-traditional processes.

* joining processes and equipment- oxyfuel & arc & resistance welding, solid-state welding, metallurgy, brazing/soldering & mechanical joining processes.

* surface technology- characteristics & measurement, tribology, surface treatment, fabrication of microelectronics,

* common aspects of manufacturing- metrology, testing and quality assurance, human factors and safety.

* manufacturing in a competitive environment- automation, integrated systems, competition and economics.

The strengths include the vast amount of detail, illustrations, references and exercises to embed learning; broadness yet correctness of content; and many examples of industrial application and usefulness for industry. An updated version, with further additions on latest technologies, process control, and systems analysis/simulation & change management, would address the only weakness of the text (the section on competitive environment manufacturing). Thoroughly recommended as a reference and how-to book in manufacturing (suspect latest version even better!)

Medicinal Natural Products: A Biosynthetic Approach is an excellent text for the subject of natural products. There are a number of other text available but many (especially the older text) are really biochemical text disguised as natural products text (such as focusing on fatty acid biosynthesis rather than polyketide synthesis). In addition, many text are too short (I possess a text that describes biosynthetic reactions in 29 pages, a far too brief discussion of this complex field). This book is available in softcover at reasonable cost (a very desirable characteristic for students). I particularly enjoy the historical and pharmacological discussions of famous natural products. It is a good text for 1st year graduate students.

This is really a wonderful book. The author has a deep insight in world of biosynthesis and medicinal natural products. I have read it all and am using it as a text to my undergaduate pharmacy students. It is just what i was looking for. Thanks Dr. Dewick, i am looking forward to see your second edition soon of this book, maybe this time we will have more about biosynthesis techniques!

A MUST for anybody interested in natural products chemistry!

This text is absolutely superb and the only regret I have is that I did not write it myself! I have used it almost exclusively for the natural products chemistry component of our Bachelor of Pharmacy degree course and it comprehensively covers all of the major types of bioactive natural products. Anyone interested in Pharmacognosy will find the book an invaluable reference text. This book will be of great importance for future students of natural products chemistry. I thoroughly recommend its purchase!

Comprehensive introduction to the field
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-07-14
This book is mainly aimed at students who have no or little experience in the field of photochemistry, while having a background in physical chemistry.
The text is divided in two parts: in the first one you will find all the fundamental aspects that govern absorption and emission of light, radiationless transitions, energy transfer, and the experimental techniques used to study photochemical processes. The second part is devoted to organic photoreactions, divided in cathegories and presented thru meaningful examples.
All the topics are discussed in a very intuitive fashion: mathematical treatment of the phenomena is avoided alltogether, as are the computational tecniques used to explain the dynamics of the processes.

The text is always crystal-clear (the explanation of intersystem crossing is probably the best i've ever read). The broad range of topics covered make it a great starter, from which one can then move to more advanced/specialized (and painfully expensive...) texts.

If you are new to the subject, it surely is the best option available for the price.

I took a number of chem classes with Nick Turro and plain and simple, the man radiates brilliance. Modern Molecular Photochemistry has been the de facto standard for photochem since the 1960s and loses none of it's excellence today. Good book for any undergrad/grad doing Chem/ChemE-related work. Very useful, very relevant, and just plain excellent.

Review Date: 2002-10-21
This is the first book to read on organic photophysics. Turro is a wonderful teacher; the introductory chapters of this book clearly explain basic concepts that other books skip entirely. I would particularly recommend this book to anyone who is new to the field and/or timid about physical chemistry, although it is certainly appropriate for more advanced students/professionals as well. The advanced reader can skip the first few chapters and still find plenty of useful reference material on energy transfer, photochemical reactions, spectroscopy, etc. There are other photochemistry textbooks available but the price makes this one the best value.

I work in an analytical lab and usually borrow my texts from the Univ. of WA library in Tacoma rather than have my corporation buy them. This text is easy to read and comprehensive. I showed it to our senior scientist asking if our company should buy this text instead of borrowing it. He looked through it and said yes, that it's always good to have good references.

This book is an excelent reference source for all aspects of modern GC analysis. It covers topics in great depth but is still easy to read for less expirienced chromatographers. The important parameters are covered in depth (column, optimization, inlet systems) providing enough information to solve most problems. The end of the book has several chapters on application specific techniques such as pharmaceutical or petrochemical analysis. You will probably learn more from this book then you would taking a short course on the subject, and the cost is much less.

The topic of this book, the physical chemistry of molecules, especially those relevant to biology, is one of the most challenging courses to a college student in chemist. But these authors have tried to make it easy for you - and they succeed. They used figures, pictures and analogies to help you to understand some of the most sophisticated concepts in science. For example entropy. The authors are leading researchers in the field and they brought a unique perspective to the subject; the writing is very lucid.

This book on molecular spectroscopy should be on the bookshelf of every practicing molecular spectroscopist and every post graduate student working in molecular spectroscopy. It complements the classic books of Herzberg in that it gives a virtually complete account of all the theory required for the interpretation of gas phase molecular spectra. The writing is clear and the book covers the subject comprehensively. Bunker and Jensen have done a great job of making a complex subject accessible.

Enjoying Molecular Symmetry and Spectroscopy

Review Date: 2000-05-05
This book authored by P. R. Bunker & P. Jensen is the second edition of the well known book on molecular spectroscopy by Phil Bunker and it is considerably larger than the first edition (probably 50% larger). I feel that anyone interested in theoretical molecular spectroscopy should have this book within easy reach. It is a very important addition to the textbooks by Herzberg and covers the entire field of theoretical molecular spectroscopy in a very lucid and clear manner. I particularly enjoyed the chapters devoted to develop the molecular Hamiltonian in detail and to show how successive approximations can be used in solving it. It makes you love spectroscopy. Indispensable.

THE book for Molecular Symmetry!
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2000-05-02
This book is THE place to learn the modern approach to symmetry in molecular spectroscopy. The clear presentation of the Molecular Symmetry Group and how it is to be used alone make this book an essential item for any molecular spectroscopist. This work, however, does much more than that - deriving the molecular Hamiltonian, the descriptions and symmetry properties of the basis sets used at various levels of approximation, the symmetry rules for interactions, transitions, etc. etc. Clearly presented this book is an enormously enhanced and expanded (by 50%) version of the first edition. There is no other work which covers this ground - and few if any works in this field that have the same breadth and clarity. My recommendation is: You can't do without it!

Molecular Symmetry and Spectroscopy

Review Date: 2000-03-30
Molecular Symmetry and Spectroscopy by P. R. Bunker and Per Jensen is a very much enlarged second edition of Bunker's classic text; the book has now grown into a rather complete account of the theory necessary to understand high resolution molecular spectra. As such it represents a welcome update and complement to Herzberg's textbooks. The writing is remarkably lucid, and in the space of the first three chapters the Molecular Symmetry Group is very clearly introduced. The body of the text explains how this group is related to the Molecular Point Group (which is of much more limited usefulness) and how it should be applied in all areas of the subject. In this way the entire subject is covered. Early chapters cover `The Molecular Hamiltonian and its Symmetry' (Chapter 7), `Nuclear Spin Statistics' (Chapter 8), and `The Born-Oppenheimer Approximation and the Electronic Wavefunctions' (Chapter 9). Later chapters cover a wide range of topics. Particularly impressive are the chapters on interactions (Chapter 13), intensities (Chapter 14), Nonrigid Molecules (Chapter 15), and Weakly Bound Cluster Molecules (Chapter 16). This impressive book is a must for anybody who wishes to study molecular spectroscopy, both as an introductory text and as a companion in the laboratory.

Good for the Intermediate Nuclear Engineer Student
Helpful Votes: 14 out of 14 total.
Review Date: 2004-05-14
This book is one of the two "Bibles" of Nuclear Engineering. LaMarsh's "Introduction to Nuclear Engineering" is the other IMHO. For those interested in a broad overview of Nuclear Engineering, it is my opinion that you should start with the LaMarsh book. Duderstadt's book contains a lot more math and can be difficult to follow without some solid math background and a few Nuc Eng courses under your belt. There are a few cases in the book where a series of equations leading to a conclusion skip a few steps. It's not as bad as the old "A=B and from this we see that e = mc2!" joke, but some work is required.

That said, this books drawbacks are also its strengths. It has stood the test of time [my copy is over 20 years old] and will probably remain relevant for another 20 years. It is to my knowledge well prepared and error free, and a must-have for anyone interested in nuclear reactor engineering.

It links to string theory are facinating as I watched on Nova the other day I felt like I was stepping back in time to the 1900's not into a new universe. Sue www.dowsingcoach.com

A ground breaking contribution to human evolutionary biology

Review Date: 2001-06-10
Professor Ellison has written the definitive book on the physiology and life history of a central pillar of human evolution; reproduction. Moreover, this book is unique in it's elegance and treatment of human reproduction. It melds three often elusive topics that beg to be integrated, evolutionary theory, life history theory, and physiology. As a biological anthropologist with expertise in evolutionary and life history theory, endocrinology, and field methods, Professor Ellison has skillfully woven these perspectives into a concise discussion of how human reproductive physiology responds to environmental challenges. Anthropologists and physiologists have often been at odds in explaining variation in human fertility resulting in frustrating discussions involving the false dichotomy between genes and environment. Ellison rejects these simplistic notions and masterfully outlines how human reproduction consists of an interplay between the genotype and environment, resulting in adaptations that involve graded physiologic responses to ecological challenges such as caloric deficiencies and energetic expenditure. Indeed, the ability of human reproductive physiology to respond to environmental challenges seems to have been a key adaptation during human evolution. 'On Fertile Ground' is the product of years of field and laboratory research by both Ellison and his colleagues, the ramifications of which include a reexamination of human physiological variation, the constraints and selection pressures that shaped human evolution, as well as a fresh perspective on the etiology of contemporary health issues such as breast cancer. The writing is superb and the illustrations are outstanding in their detail and clarity. 'On Fertile Ground' is an extremely valuable and important contribution to contemporary biological anthropology and evolutionary biology as a whole. Indeed, 'On Fertile Ground' will be required reading for undergraduate and graduate students studying reproductive ecology in the biological anthropology program at Yale University. Ellison's work is an extraordinary achievement!

The is a beautifully crafted and engrossing description of human reproductive physiology and sociology. The non-specialist reader will learn more than he or she ever though possible about the nature of being a human being -- and be continually fascinated along the journey. Allan Watts once complained that no "Owner's Manuals" were issued to human beings. Ellison has certainly made a wonderful contribution to one.
