The emphasis in this book is on accidents that have occurred as the result of the unforeseen effects of changes to chemical plants. The descriptions are well written, easy to read and bring out the essentials of each incident. Everyone who works in the process industries, from operator to operations director, should read the book. But what is read is soon forgotten. More will be remembered if the incidents are discussed at toolbox talks or safety meetings. Someone should ask if anything similar has happened locally, if it could happen and, if so, how we should prevent it? In an introductory Chapter Roy shows that the chemical industry has a good safety record, better than many industries that have fewer intrinsic hazards. Nevertheless, none of the incidents need have happened. There is something fundamentally wrong with our safety training. Its weakness, I think, is that it pays too much attention to principles, procedures, codes and standards and not enough to incidents. Accounts of incidents can grab our attention and stimulate us to look into the procedures and codes that will prevent them happening again. If we read only the theory and the codes we soon forget. Accident reports can demonstrate their importance and make us remember. We should start with accident reports, such as those in this book and draw the theory and codes out of them, not start with theories and codes.

i've read this book. its contents make me interested to read more, especially about the producing of chlormethanes from oxychlorination of methane. i also want to know another process to produce chloroprene.
i hope that this book will becomes more complete with many and latest information about petrochemical technology.

Debus, History professor at the University of Chicago who was trained as research chemist and has published widely on Renaissance and early modern science theory. His history CHEMICAL PROMISE embraces both European and American history and philosophy and offers up a close analysis of scientific method, definition, and changing scientific perceptions from alchemy to modern times. College-level students of either science or philosophy will find it important.

This book contains virtually all reference to adsorption studies for suspension up to its publication.
For me an my colleagues it is a far more reliable and quicker reference than any internet search.
You look for published points of zero charge for a given material, yuu will find them. Of course nobody can take away from you the judgment of the entries in terms of a critical evaluation, but you get a very concise overview over then range of publshed values.
To me this book has become a companion over the last years, which I do not want to miss any more.

I wrote this book with environmental specialists in mind, but it will also be useful to engineers, scientists, and other specialists in industry and academia who need to screen chemicals, design industrial processes, design chemical syntheses, monitor and analyze chemicals, or identify outliers in measured values of physical properties. The properties covered are boiling point, melting point, density, vapor pressure, solubility, activity coefficient, air-water partition coefficient, octanol-water partition coefficient, sorption coefficient, bioconcentration factor, diffusivity, and volatility. The methods described are, without exception, easy to apply and properly validated. Input data is readily available for them all. Even so, they give accurate and reliable estimates of the properties of a broad range of interesting chemicals within the normal range of ambient conditions. Statistics, applicability, and example calculations are given for every method described. Lots of reference data on many important environmental contaminants is included, too.

Finally Dr Roberts published his book. This has been a course pack at NC State for several years and was the greatest thing since sliced bread. This version is much easier to tote around, unfortunately it is also much more expensive. Still I am very happy to own one. I learned alot from this text. Topics are laid out well and explained well so that everyone can understand. You cant go wrong with this book.

This is THE book for chemical sensing with FET. Madou, equally comfortable in semiconductors and electrochemistry, weaves through both fields at a fundamental level and makes clear, concise interdisciplinary links. Excellent!
