Take a journey back in time!

Review Date: 2007-10-31
A young lawyer named Amos Trumbull in Braintree, Massachusetts, hears a knock on his door one rainy night in April of 1775. Amos opens the door to find John Hancock standing there! The trustworthy young lawyer is about to begin on an amazing journey that will take him to Monticello, Virginia, in order to deliver important papers to Thomas Jefferson.

Soon finding himself enduring hardship after hardship, Amos Trumbull risks his life traveling by coach, ferry, horseback and endlessly on foot. Journey to Monticello is an eye-opening view of the difficulties of life in colonial times.

A grateful Thomas Jefferson asks Amos Trumbull, "Amos, my friend, tell me what you think of as the worst part of your journey."

"Frankly, sir," said Amos, "it is the thought that I must travel all the way back!"

This book is a wonderful tool for a young student's understanding of life in the 18th century.

In this fast-paced age we live, it's even difficult for adults to remember that traveling didn't use to be so easy. JOURNEY TO MONTICELLO illustrates the hardships of traveling in colonial times in very dramatic and graphic detail by telling the tale of Amos Trumball on a journey to deliver an important letter to Thomas Jefferson. Amos travels from his home in Braintree, Massachusetts to Monticello, Virginia. Along the way he rides in a coach, ferry, on a horse, and travels by foot. The trip takes several weeks and Amos incurs several hardships. Great book for introducing children to colonial times and also for helping them realize how blessed we are nowadays.

I don't know what it is with this book but somehow the word jump out at you. It's so realistic, the characters really live. It's almost as if Linda Crew is writing an autobiography of her own life. Rulez.

Buy this book for yourself and your kids!

A coming of age story with a difference; Linda Crew's young heroine comes from a stable,
middle class family that has done a good job of raising their two children, twins Kathy and Kenny.

Kathy struggles with choices typical for teenagers in the sixties and makes intelligent decisions.
She isn't perfect, just smart. She also is funny, scattered, passionate and thoroughly likable.

Each anecdote rings true, from her disappointing audition for "The Miracle Worker" to the
confrontation with a group of "jocks" one morning before school. Linda Crew makes Kathy a real girl, someone to cry with, cheer for and relate to.

The problems Kathy faces as a teenager in the sixties are the same problems teenagers are
dealing with now. Her ability to make wise choices makes her an excellent heroine and role
model, not just for kids but for their parents too.

An excellent book for the younger generation.

Review Date: 2004-09-24
This book is approximately A4 size containing 64 pages aimed at the younger generation. It is, nevertheless, an excellent addition to my growing collection of books by this world-famous Oceanographer.

Whereas most authors would start at the beginning of their own particular story and leave any "discovery" to near the end, Ballard gets right down to it by showing us the remains of the Isis almost straight away before telling us what it was all about and what was involved. Of course, he only goes so far before he adds plenty of ancient history to fascinate the reader. Then it's back to his incredible work as he skilfully reduces all the technical jargon - which must be a serious part of his job, into another exciting and very readable account of the discovery of another important ship and, in this case, the recovery of ancient artefacts.

Well supported with the right amount of artwork for those ancient scenes - from an age long before cameras were even a concept.

Altogether an excellent book for any youngster who admires the work of Dr Ballard.

Robert Ballard discovers an ancient Roman shipwreck

Review Date: 2003-02-04
Robert D. Ballard, of course, is the discoverer of the "Titanic" and several other famous shipwrecks of the 20th century. However, this story of "The Lost Wreck of the Isis," is more interesting because this time the ship in question is an ancient Roman ship from the 4th century. With the "Titanic" we have hundreds of images of the ship before it sailed on its maiden voyage into history, but discovering an ancient Roman ship is an entirely different matter, something for archeologists to investigate and to uncover details about the lives of people a long time ago.

This book tells the story of the JASON Project's exploration of the deepest ancient shipwreck ever found. This Mediterranean expedition used the same underwater camera sled that had found the Titanic a few years earlier. A year later Ballard and his crew returned with archeological experts to explore the ship they now called the "Isis." JASON was the name of the brand-new high-tech underwater vehicle, which at the time was the most advanced deep-water robot ever crated. JASON was able to beam back live images of the deep sea, as they were happening, to young students in science museums around the world. Students were able to ask questions of Dr. Ballard and the other scientists.

"The Lost Wreck of the Isis" not only tells the story of the JASON Project's exploration but also recreates the final voyage of the ship. The fanciful story focuses on Antonius, a young merchant's song, who is excited to take a trip from Rome to North Africa and the port city of Carthage. The attempt is to recreate what life was like for Antonius and others in the 4th century, a time of public baths, gladiatorial arenas, and the like. The book is illustrated with photographs, illustrations, and diagrams, bringing alive history, archeology and scientific exploration. My only complaint is that the book takes too long to get to the really interesting part, which for me is the discovery of the ship and what they found on the bottom of the sea. But the book gives equal weight to the technology of discovery used on this expedition, the wreckage that was recovered, and the reconstruction of the times in which the "Isis" sailed.

A story about a new teacher's first day of teaching on the first day of the school year.

I liked this book. The text was adequate, and the illustrations were pretty good. They worked well together. The book is 26 scenes long. Some scenes were 2 pages wide, and others were less than a page.

The story is about Mr. Ouchy (pronounced like Grouchy) who is nervous about his first day of teaching. It follows Mr. Ouchy from the day before to the end of the day he began his career as a teacher. And his mom still looks over him just like the mothers of his students look over them.

I would have liked the book better if the main character had been a female elementary school teacher and not such a mamma's boy. And I think the text could have been better by emphasizing the bigger aspects of the story rather than getting caught up in dialog. 4 stars!

In this adventurous story a group of three kids go back in time. They get transported to a colony called Roanoke. The only way to return to their own time is to solve the mystery of how the people of Roanoke disappeared. In the process, they make friends, learn about the past and grow spiritually. It's unpredictable and will keep you on the edge of your seat!

An interesting book !

After reading another book about The Lost Colony, I decided to explore further. SECRET OF THE LOST COLONY is an interesting interpretation of what may have happened to the lost men, women and children of the 1587 Roanoke Colony, and certainly gives a different answer to what caused them to vanish without a trace. I don't think historians would agree, however, that most of them drowned in a hurricane. If you want to read a fictional account which is historically researched and extremely logical in its conclusion, try THE LYON'S ROAR, by M. L. Stainer. It's exciting, accurate, and absolutely enthralling!

This series is amazing, and never leaves you at a loss for whatwill happen next, but the suspense is overwhelming! Tag and Walkertogether make the strongest pair of friends I have ever seen in a novel. Their lives span centuries and their stories capture you! I strongly recommend this book, and the others in the Walker of Time series, to enjoy over and over again as I have!

Action sequel beats the original.

This sequel easily got 4 stars. In the beginning Tag the main character travels through timefrom 1250 to a lot of different times. All through that time he protected the canyon he lived in with his best friend from grave robbers. In the end he finds his dad and the canyon is protected. I thought that the author characterizied Tag and the people he met well. It is very suspenseful and made me read on. This is a very good book to read if you like the Indian culture or action books.
