Since my niece became a new mommie, she shared this book with me. It is a fabulous collection of ideas to put the "quality" into quality time with the kids. Since I have found this treasure, it has become an item I love to include with my gift for baby showers. Don't pass this up!

This book is an incredible resource of creative, interactive ideas for activities to do with children of all ages. The activities are designed to take advantage of materials parents already have on hand, and they require very little preparation time. The book clearly shows how such diverse activities for children can assist them to build skills as leaders and organizers, develop their creative thinking and help them to become capable game masters.

Upon reading the book to my 3rd grade class my students were mesmerized. They loved the pictures, the writing was easy to understand, and the story line came alive. Ray does an excellent job with the illustrations - they complement the author's beautiful words. Benoit Slawson's writing is absolutely wonderful - my students could not get enough of this book. In fact, we continued our storytime by following the book up with a trip to the local apple orchard (insisted upon by my 8 year olds!). I just wish Benoit Slawson would come out with her next book; although, it will be hard to follow the perfection of "Apple Picking Time". I will be the first one to buy her next book, and I am positive my students will love it as much as their beloved "Apple Picking Time". The book is both poetic and informative - such a wonderful combination for this brand-new, highly talented author!!

This book is funny because of the plot, especially the middle part of the story. The most funny part is that part of Teacher Bob dating. But there are a lot of other moments I can't recall, but the authors really did a good job on this book.

When Brother and sister hear that there is a new cub in town. They are all hoping thatit will be someone who is good at basketball so that they can beat the pants off of too-tall. When they find out that the new cub is in a wheel chair. They feel so strange around him. Worst of all the new cub is so touchy about his wheelchair.
Will the cubs be able to make friends with the impossible cub?
It is a very good book that teachs kids that all cubs are the same and that it doesn't matter if you can walk or not.

Brother and Sister Bear's new friend uses a wheelchair and the cubs have many questions for their mother about it. The concerns and questions they have are well explained and the story moves beautifully towards the conflict where the new cub proves himself. The story is well thought out and is very well geared toward children. The story's conflict and resolution are delightful.

A Change is Gonna Come

Those seriously interested in eliminating racism and making our society representative of it's famous constitutional creed, must read Beth Roy's "Bitters in the Honey." Roy interviews several adults, black and white, who were students at Central High School-Little Rock, Ark. during the school desegration of 1957-58. Roy clearly points out how the priviledged white students perceived the move towards equality as infringing on their rights, thus making them victims. While the nine black students-the true victims-, the martyrs for positive change, had to withstand constant harassment and acts of violence by angry white students. Even more pathetic, Roy describes how the white students blame the monumental court decision for them not reaching their expected goals in life. Blame, responsibility, guilt, denial are common themes expressed by the white adults, who unknowingly had the power to affect change that would in turn, empower everyone. This book should be on the Oprah Book List, because until serious discussion about race relations is undertaken between people, there will continue to be two victims: the hater and the hated. And this society will continue to weaken from divisiveness.
Understanding desegregation across the divide of race

In this excellent book, Beth Roy examines the lives of whites and blacks who attended Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1958 - the tumultuous year of Central High's desegregation. Drawing on life histories with former high school students, Roy paints a complicated and layered picture of understanding, and more importantly, misunderstanding between whites and blacks across time - the interviews were done 30 years later - and across racial difference. I use this book in course I teach on the history of affirmative action in 20th Century America - and my undergraduate students respond strongly to this book. Some are quite surprised by the white students misperceptions about the black students who came to Central High and their seeming indifference to the experiences of black students. Others are upset, even angry by this indifference. And, still others are embarassed as they read their own feelings into the life histories of the participants. It is also terrific for teaching about the dilemma of memory in reconstructing life histories. Roy demonstrates how the people she interviewed often unwittingly reconstruct their stories of the past to fit present day narratives and understandings or race, race relations, and "white victimization." Rather than dismiss their accounts as "untrue," however, she uses these examples to understand why her interviewees tell stories that diverge from actual accounts written at the time of desegregation. In all, this is a terrific book and a terrific read. I highly recommend it.

this book is fantastic! it is sooo good. i mean, i read it like three times, (maybe more), and i'm not sick of it yet. my friend got this book mega-cheap at a garage sale and the only reason she bought it was caus it was accidently in the bag she put books in. i'm really sorry (and mad) she didn't get more. There were a ton of em'! okay, i'll tell you what it is about. see, the seven sleepers were sent to this island to help a bunch of really uncivilized people. they talk to the captain of the boat who brings them there and he shuts up and refuses to talk about it. finally they get the cook or someone to talk about it. he starts babbling bout these monsters on the island. later, the seven sleepers find out the "monsters" were dinosaurs. They also meet 2 tribes that war against each other. They found out about only one at first. or rather, the tribe found them. they were saved from having their hearts cut out by the chief's daughter. they taught the tribe all these stuff, like making bread and weapons and how to help other people. later, they helped make peace between the two tribes. I'm not telling how, that's giving away too much. i've already said too much. all i'm gonna say is the ending is pretty funny, especially to me. darn, i'm really bad at making endings so i guess i'll make an unoriginal ent to match with an unoriginal beggining. You know, great book! the end

Great book for a student of tea

I would reccommend this book for students studying the Japanese tea ceremony. This month by month guide tells which flowers, foods, pottery and poetry are appropriate for each month and season. It also has lists of all the important days of every month and gives key words and phrases asscociated with each month. It has some history regarding tea masters and it has a great glossary which gives the meaning of many tea words. This is a beautiful, useful and well written book if you are planning an actual ceremony...However, I must warn anyone considering buying this book of a few things: This book DOES NOT teach you how to perform a tea ceremony! This very thick book does not have many pictures other than a few dozen small black and whites of various scrolls and ancient art. There is not much in this book regarding different types of matcha. This book does not have photos of the many (and fairly expensive) tools you will need to make matcha the traditional way...In fact, if you have never taken a tea lesson I would hesitate reccommending this book. I had no idea what most of this meant until I took lessons! I have been taking tea lessons for about two months and TRUST ME when I say, it's practically impossible to learn how to do a proper tea ceremony from any book! (It would be like trying to learn martial arts by watching TV!) Most teachers will tell you this too. You learn the steps of a ceremony with your body and not just your mind. Other students in my class have been taking lessons for over ten years and are still perfecting their skills. The tea ceremony is a wonderful, relaxing and fun hobby. Like any fine art, it takes years of practice, patience and dedication to get really good at it. Please don't let this discourage you from learning or reading about tea ceremonies. Green tea can bring you a lot of joy and many health benefits! I made matcha lots of times before I ever took lessons and I always had fun but nothing compares to learning how to do it correctly. Overall, if you already have a fair amount of knowledge about tea you will really appriciate this wonderful book. If you know nothing about tea you might feel a little lost and may be better off with a more basic Japanese tea book. Either way, it is a very rewarding and most beautiful hobby. I encourage anyone who is interested to learn more about it. Tea ceremonies are truly the kind of thing you can keep learning more and more about for as long as you live and you may learn a lot about yourself in the process!
For experienced tea people.

Creep's time travelling adventures may be too harrowing for younger readers; in the past he is subjected to apalling child labor (slavery) and physical abuse. However, this is an important subject for older kids. The book is intriguing and suspenseful, and will keep you reading so you will learn some general history in a uniquely concrete, real way. I couldn't put the book down; but I felt the end did not explain everything to my satisfaction, the novel's only drawback.

This book is what led me to become interested in the Victorian period. You can't put it down. Younger children will be put off by the unfamiliar English, but older children who have a little more historical background and patience with language will like it. I think this is a brilliant depiction of the horrors of the Industrial Revolution, where child labour was so brutal and so prevalent. Stylistically, it's lyrical and has what we don't often see: the "kind of" happy ending. It really makes you think about our own society and where we have come from. Books like these are important because children can feel a link to kids in the past, and therefore come to a better understanding of the past. Yes, it's gruesome (children get beaten and disfigured), but that's historical truth for you. This is the perfect antidote for the books (and teachers) that insist on never rocking the boat. A thoughtful child of about 11-14 will enjoy this book.
