Excellent Guide and Reference - A Must Buy!

I bought the Sixth Edition during my last semester in college and found information not told in my art/design classes. This is a packet that you can easily turn to for a quick reference on print preparation and production. During the past two years, I've mainly worked on web projects and now started to do print work. Graphics Master is a BIG help. GET IT when you see find a chance. The Eight Edition may be out soon. No other books out there offer the information bundled in this packet; from listings of over 1200 fonts, type weights, copyfitting charts, swatches, binding info. and etc. It's a gold mine! This is one of the main components you will need throughout your design career.

An essential reference for all graphic designers!

With all the attention on the World Wide Web these days, it is easy to overlook the continued importance of the world of printed matter. With the domination of computer-based production, it becomes all too easy to believe that the computer is the only tool necessary for making graphics "happen". But the computer is but one component in a chain of problem-solving and production planning activities. Knowing how to make compelling art and design is one thing, but what do you do with the content after your brainstorm? How will you plan to use your creations in any given production format? This essential reference contains a wealth of just this sort of information, and belongs on every designers' bookshelf. Most of my students are amazed at the amount of information in this book - they always learn something new that was never covered in school. A thorough working knowledge of the subjects covered in Graphics Master 6 can make the difference between being regarded as a "junior" designer, or being regarded as a well-rounded, experienced professional. Even if your world seems to only include designing for on-screen media, there is a lot to gain from browsing through this reference work. I am frankly amazed at the growing number of "so-called" graphic designers who don't know much of anything contained in these pages, and I don't know how they will be able to be considered true professionals in the world of creative design and production.

HOW THINGS ARE IN THE MATERIAL WORLD

Review Date: 2002-04-05
Thirty-four writers present a short essay, typically four or five pages long, each on their specialist subject or subjects. Many of them succeed brilliantly and repay respectful re-readings.

However, this is a difficult book to review since, as the title suggests, it is both broad and ambitious. Although there is no real danger of acquiring a full 'science toolkit for the mind', there is a splendid amount of well-presented science herein, and the best parts really do what the title suggests, and will teach you how to critique the not-so-good parts if you are persistent enough, which is even more entertaining than watching Star Wars and Lord of the Rings back-to-back. To score the book as a whole I gave each essay a mark in the range from one to five. The mean essay score is 3.2, but ten of the essays scored 5/5, so I give it an easy 5 stars on a value-for-money basis. (The modal mark is 5, the median 3. Six essays scored 1, six scored 2, eight scored 3, four scored 4. The essay on quarks by Alan H. Guth baffles me, so that might well be a five too for all I know, but I gave it a one on the basis that he should not be so out of step with the others - I understood the other three or four physics essays well enough.)

My top ten essays are:
1. 'What Happened Before the Big Bang?', by Paul Davies (physics).
2. 'The Joy of Water', by P.W. Atkins (physical chemistry).
3. 'Who Do We Blame For What We Are?', Jack Cohen (genetics: how DNA really works and why Jurassic Park cannot happen).
4. 'The Puzzle of Averages', by Michael S. Gazzaniga (danger in calculating averages from raw data and assigning meaning to results. Cases studies from psychology of language development in children, and physiology of human brain asymmetry. This essay does explicitly demonstrate the use of a tool for scientific reasoning.)
5. 'Ceteris Paribus (All Else Being Equal)', by Pascal Boyer (how to construct a hypothesis and move it towards a theory. Demonstrates use of simple coherent generalizations to separate the wheat from the chaff yet still recognise the weight of 'an embarrassing, unexplained fact'. Wonder stuff, an indispensible tool for the mind, you don't have to agree with his psychology of religion.)
6. 'Minds, Brains, and Rosetta Stones', by Steven Rose (philosophy meets psychophysiology: the mind-body problem and anti-reductionism, ie, levels of meaning and explanation in the various sciences. Sends B.F. Skinner, E.O. Wilson, and Jim Watson packing with a frog's leg.)
7. 'Study Talmud', by David Gelernter. (Computer science. Wow - any propeller-head who can explain the usefulness of Talmud study for the precision use of language in science and make me want to read up on the programming language specification for ALGOL60 and the supplementaries by D.E. Knuth as exemplars should get a prize. Supplies references with essay. Amusing sideswipe at the sociobabble of multiculturalism in postscript.)

GOTO StudyTalmud

8. 'What Is Time?', by Lee Smolin (physics).
9. 'Special Relativity: why you can't go faster than light', by W. Daniel Hillis (physics). Not as complicated as I thought, to my relief.
10. 'How Long Will The Human Species Last? An argument with Robert Malthus and Richard Gott', by Freeman Dyson. (On the right selection of a priori probabilities and assumptions in forming theory, cf Pascal Boyer. An elegant deconstruction of Robert 'Gloomy Science' Malthus' famous work on population growth, and Gott's similarly pessimistic and overly simple mathematical model of Man's not-special place in the universe.)

As the introduction puts it exactly : Reading the essays is like overhearing a conversation among scientists dining at a nearby table. The book of a set of essays by great scientists. Each essay is short and focused. Each scientist's biographical details are given. All have tried to write to layman. The major themes are : Thinking about science, Origins, Evolution, Mind, Cosmos and the Future. My own interest in the theme of mind. They are essays by Shank, Dennett , Hao Wang and others. There is a interesting essay by Gelernter titled " Study Talmud". It actually discusses about ALGOL Report & evolution of PASCAL language. The issue of identity in internet is explored in an essay. Ian Stewart explains about symmetry. Every library should have a copy of the book.

This book presents a great variety of short essays written by top scientists. Each essay is just a few pages long, and I was able to understand all but one very well. (I have no background in science.) I've already ordered several of them from my local library.

And here's what I liked best: At the end of each essay is a short bio sketch of the scientist/author. Included in those bios are the titles of other books written by those authors...and most of them write science books for laymen.

The purpose of this book is to inform the reader about general aspects and procedures regarding how the legal system works and the role lawyers and mental health professionals play. In addition the second part of the book comprehensively reviews the history of hypnosis and how the courts have scrutinized hypnotically refreshed memories within the legal system. Finally, the book takes an up front approach to addressing the recent crisis of sexual abuse in the United States and profiles sexual types of abusers provides insight into abuse.

This book gave me a great understanding of how the legal process works and the different types of law. In addition, I have been facinated by hypnosis for years. This book gives the most comprehensive review of the history of hypnosis that I have ever seen. Not only that, but this book also reviews how the court system has viewed hypnotically refreshed memories and the legalities involved in that.

I would highly recommend this book to any reader!

This is a great book! It explains in an understandable manner what the law is and how it works. Not only that, but it provides great insight into the workings of the legal profession, i.e., what lawyers do and the role of mental health professionals.

Additionally, it has a great section regarding mental illness and and explanation of different mental illnesses and also common defense mechanisms that people have and use.

Finally, I brought up great points regarding the crisis of sexual abuse in society and broke it down in a way that helped me understand the issues involved in abuse.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning an overview of how the law works, what lawyers and mental health professionals do within the legal system, and the issues of sexual abuse in society.

Okay,so like me a few weeks before Christmas you marked up all the power tools you'd like in a trade catalogue and left it lying around the house. Again, if you were lucky like me, you got most of them!! Herewith the first problem, how do I use them? Most of them I only felt at ease with plugging in to the nearest socket without switching on. I searched high and low for publications for each tool particularly aimed at the beginner but with no success. If you're in the same boat then this book is for YOU. Covering stationary and portable power tools displayed in easy to read sections full of advice on use and safety, all liberally doused with photographs and illustrations. Even for the more accomplished among us I can see this book being a valuable reference source. It is in itself "a TOOL without a motor" but nonetheless full of "the POWER of knowledge".

I think this is an excellant book for someone who wishes to know if woodworking is for him/her. I have purchased several more specific books , such as routers and their applications, but this book (which was a birthday present), provides a broad overview for someone who wants to know the basics of a tool which will be enough to get him/her started. . . If only Amazon.com would bring the price down, I would send it to friends & family. . . In my dreams. . .

Encyclopedia + cookbook

Review Date: 2004-07-01
I keep this book nearby because it serves as an encyclopedia of quality techniques that span the full spectrum, as well as a step-by-step guide to using each of the tools listed.

The entire collection of tools contained and described within are put into context in the first chapter that covers the continuous quality improvement story and its five steps - reason, current situation, analysis, action plan and results. Subsequent chapters are devoted to classes of tools: the basics (flow charts, check sheets, facts vs. inference, and how to construct tools such as Pareto diagrams, histograms, and control charts). Supporting tools, covered in the next chapter, include pie and bar charts, frequency charts, Likert scales and related diagrams.

Basic quality improvement techniques given in the next section go beyond just tools, and include vision and mission statements, group interaction techniques, problem classification and concepts. Among the tools are development charts, force-field analysis, checklists.

Advanced techniques, covered in the next chapter address process ownership, and some fairly substantial tools such as quality function deployment and Taguchi techniques, both of which are explained well in a surprising few pages.

The remainder of the book discusses quality improvement systems, such as JIT, ISO standards; and brief bios of Deming, Crosby and Juran and their approaches. Selected readings on various quality standards round out this book's treatment of the subject.

What I like about this book is the way a large number of topics and associated tools are thoroughly covered in a relatively short book. I also like the way you are clearly led through the construction and use of various charts, and how to effectively use tools in a step-by-step manner. This is clearly a useful introduction to quality tools and techniques, as well as a desk reference.

Easy to use...full of good tools

Review Date: 2006-05-07
Tools And Techniques For Character Interpretation: A Handbook Of Psychology For Actors, Writers, And Directors by New York actor, dialect coach, and writer, Robert Blumenfeld is an informed and informative study of the interpretive science of psychology and the methodical analysis of acting and character interpretation on stage or before cameras. Presenting a superbly written instruction manual on the performance art of acting, Tools And Techniques For Character Interpretation provides readers with a thematically appropriate interpretation of the great psychologists Freud, Klein, and Jung, as well as a practical understanding of the applications of psychological analysis in acting. Tools And Techniques For Character Interpretation is to be given high praise and strong recommendation for all aspiring or practicing actors, directors and screenwriters for its remarkable coverage of the psychology involved with the art of acting. Also very highly recommended by Robert Blumenfeld is "Accents: A Manual for Actors" (Limelight, 2002) and "Acting with the Voice: The Art of Recording Books (Limelight, 2004).

Rich resource for creating deep and individual characters
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2006-07-04
Anyone who acts or writes should aspire to creating the deepest characters they can -- and what a wealth of contradictions, loves, fears, resentments, childhood hurts, faith and joy is every person on this earth, both the ones born with flesh and the ones someone writes and acts and who often seem realer than your neighbor. (I refuse to even consider that Hamlet or Shylock never lived.) Robert Blumenfeld's new book gives us a history of psychology and how it can be applied to creating many-layered characters; even more fascinating, he delves into specific interpretations of many great characters, and the psychology he himself used when portraying the Marquis of Queensberry in the off-Broadway long-run, complex drama, "The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde."

This is a book about not saying lines as an actor, or writing scenes as a novelist, but portraying the deepest soul of a character, no matter how short the role may be. Doing this is a great joy, and will make the audience member, or casting director, or reader sit up slowly in their seat and find themselves rapt with attention, listening to the endless reverberations under every word and gesture before them.

Keep this book on your shelf and consult it often!

Hmmmm.....

Review Date: 2006-04-11
In his preface, Blumenfeld explains how his book "takes from the science of behavior tools and techniques that will be useful to the actor in practicing the art of behavior, to the writer in creating characters with depth, and to the director in interpreting scripts." This handbook is fairly heavy reading, but is still accessible to people who are not very familiar with the world of psychology. Thankfully, Chapter 8 is nearly 50 pages of alphabetized psychology terms and topics. Blumenfeld covers basic psychological principles and theories with examples from film and television.
