The setting begins on a bus in the middle of the Arizona desert, on its way to an exclusive spa. Through out the story the "desert" setting is constant, but the feeling of the heat has yet to be passed through the text to the reader. For brief periods of time there are trees (forest trails), and cliffs, but mainly events are centered around a very comfort pleasing spa, except for the fact that every one is put on diets to help stay fit and nutritious. It was almost like a fat camp or something, since some of the characters had to sneak sugary snacks to keep their sanity.

The main characters are Nancy, Bess and George. They are all close friends and traveling on this trip together. Nancy is of course the well know child detective who does not scare easily and has a nose for any possible mystery needing to be solved. Bess is constantly concerned about her weight and seems a bit more absent minded than the rest of the characters, becoming the annoying comic relief of the story. George is athletic and becomes Nancy's sidekick in the book, completing ideas and strategies. Some other important characters are Hank, the villain of the story that is out for revenge, as many are who have been jilted in life. Alan also has a large role and the athletic trainer at the spa, who is very into fitness and takes his job super seriously. Other characters that do have a large role but are significant to the plot twist (which is minor) are the Rozier's who own the spa, being very business oriented and secretive.

The plot is simple, as in many Nancy Drew novels, but can hold the interest of someone young and a Nancy drew fan. While the three girls are at the spa, as always a mystery seems to develop following Nancy Drew around like an enjoyable plague. Horrible sabotage is being down to many of the facilities causing not only expensive damage but also a danger to all guest. In Nancy's search to find the culprit, she discovers the horrible secret that is the cause for all the problems. After a few facing death experiences, Nancy soon uncovers the culprit.

***The following is from the back of the book; I DID NOT write it***

In search of a saboteur, Nancy finds that every desert trail leads to danger...

Nancy, Bess, and George are spending a week at the exclusive Spa Solaire outside Tucson, Arizona - a place for relaxation, rigorous exercise, and complete beauty make-overs. But they soon discover a much more sinister aspect to the Solaire program when an unexpected visitor welcomes them to their cabin: a poisonous black widow spider!

Every new activity poses a new risk to the staff and guests - beginning with sabotage and ending in kidnapping. The key to the case is Jacqueline Rozier, the world-famous model who runs Solaire. But what is she afraid of, and what shocking truth is hidden hidden in her past? Nancy must find the answers before the desert campaign of terror takes its final, fatal twist!

My review:
Overall I have seen both better and worse Nancy Drew books. To me this book was just average. The characters were not all that original although I did like a "secondary" ending that occurred in the last few pages of the book (there were two separate resolutions in the same story line). A good addition to complete a Nancy Drew collection but don't expect anything spectacular.

Action, Suspense is here if you need it!!!

Again I say 5 stars for this Nancy Drew book. All I can say is BUY IT!!!!! It is worth the money, for all that action and suspense. Espacially at the end when Nancy and her friends are trapped...... You will have to read it to see if Nancy escapes this one.[of course you know the answer.] Well, buy this book is all I can say!

John has put together a book packed with information and beautiful pictures. Confused about the various art covers on Girks' series books? Problem solved. John does an excellent job explaining the different covers and each one is illustrated in beautiful color photographs.

Buy it for the information. Share it for the photographs. The pictures alone make this a great book for the coffee table. Even non collectors will enjoy seeing the beautiful dust jackets from the books they enjoyed as children.

Worth so much more than the price. John presents his material in a straight forward easy to understand format. John's book is a must have for serious collectors, but non collectors will enjoy it just as much.

I bought it, and I love it. The only regret I have is I wish I would have bought it sooner.

Worth the price for the pictures alone

The title of this book may mislead some readers to believe that it covers many girls' series books, when in reality it covers only the following: Nancy Drew, Judy Bolton, Kay Tracey, Beverly Gray, Penny Parker, and Ruth Fielding. (The subtitle of the book indicates that these series are featured, but it is still not necessarily clear that they are the only series in the book.) That being said, this book is clearly a labor of love by a person who knows what he's talking about. There is intelligent discussion on collecting books, cleaning old books, estimating values, and different formats.

And then... the pictures. This book includes full color photographs of all the book covers in their various incarnations. For instance, on one page are placed the FOUR different covers for Nancy Drew's "The Clue of the Broken Locket." It's fun to see how the covers evolved over the years, and the author offers much historical information about the cover artists, the Stratemeyer Syndicate in general, and the various editions in which the books have been offered. The other series mentioned above are treated in a similar manner. Overall this is an attractively designed book that can give pleasure whether you browse leisurely or read closely. Enjoy!

Book is renamed for New edition! Grrrr

I ordered Secret of Collecting Girls Series books as well as All About Collecting Girls Series Books, both by John Axe... Well, after ordering both of the books, I found out that Secret of.... is just the first edition. It contains info on Ruth Fielding, Nancy Drew, Judy Bolton, Beverly Gray, Kay Tracey, Penny Parker and I think Cherry Ames. {I say "I think" because the book got returned, but I know it at least goes up to Penny Parker} Problem is, this EXACT SAME INFORMATION is found in All About Collecting... with the addition of three or four other girls' series books. I felt [disappointed] because the two books are obviously just a first edition and a second edition with some added material. I've never heard of a 2nd edition being RENAMED something else, albeit a similar title. So word to the wise. If you don't care about the other series mentioned in All About (Vicki Barr, Connie Blair, & Dana Girls) then get this book and save a few dollars. But do NOT get them both thinking they are "companion" books as inferred on several web sites.

Carolyn Keene once again shows that she has her finger on the pulse of what young fans want to read about. This time, the background of the mystery is soccer team rivalry!

Nancy and her friends are all on the same soccer team, and when a new girl moves into town and joins their team, strange things start to happen to disrupt practice. You just can't help but suspect the new girl, because she used to play on the rival team!

Could she be the one who put salt in the drinking water, put equipment in the trash and even slimed someone's shoe? Don't go jumping to conclusions. It's Nancy Drew that will crack the case of The Soccer Shoe Clue!

Recommended.

I think it was a good book, but when Nancy found clues in all the books that I've read, it was the most interesting. One that I really liked was called the "Sercret at Solaire".I read alot of Nancy Drew books from my school library. But the Soccer Shoe Clue was one of the best.

Carl Sandburg Elementary School has a pretty famous graduate! It's newspaper reporter, Alice Stone, who is coming back to her old school to write a report! Naturally, everyone is really excited, especially Nancy Drew. She's the lucky student who'll be sitting next to Alice Stone in her third-grade classroom! This is an exciting honor, and the entire class is on its best behavior so they can get a good review in the news.

But soon, Nancy will be called on to do some reporting of her own, if she wants to save the reputation of her class. Detailing every prank, suspect and clue in her trusty blue detectives notebook, Nancy has to crack the case of The Third-Grade Reporter before Alice Stone publishes her story!

Carolyn Keene has written yet another mystery that her young fans will adore.

I've read a lot of Nancy Drew books and frankly I think that this book is to juvinile. I see where Keene is coming from wishing to provide a series for the younger generation but I think she should stick to the other books because I believe it is cramping her style.

This is a well-constructed mystery about a former student who returns to Nancy's school for four days as a grown-up reporter. Most of the kids are thrilled she's there and want to impress her. The only problem is someone is after her. But who and why? Nancy leads the search to find out the answer and save her school from a bad newspaper review. I found the story a lot of fun.

A kid's series it would appear, that you could call Veronica Mars really, really, really, really, really, really lite. As in this is aimed at the single figure and slightly later crowd.

It is supposed to be somewhat manga styled, and the 'professor' that is the villain of the piece looks like he is about 23, that sort of a thing. Also, a combination of artwork, and computer graphics, maybe so they can pump them out faster? It is done pretty well, and the background artwork is not so detailed, so maybe that is a labor time thing. Doesn't seem to detract.

Basically, the story is a young boy goes missing with a camcorder that has some evidence, and so does an artifact of archaeological significance.

This is the first that I've read of the new series of "manga-esque" graphic novels featuring the classic "girl detective", though it's the second to be published. All in all, it's pretty good, with an interesting and not-at-all simple plot, and above average artwork -- Nancy, George and Bess all look great! (I'm particularly fond of George's -- ahem -- "boyish" look, given the early history of the character. Heh heh.) It's definitely several notches above the companion "Hardy Boys" manga-esque graphic novel that I've read, which relies way too much on gimmickry and (for a kid's book) excessive violence. This, on the other hand, is a good, old-fashioned, not-terribly violent mystery that still manages to be pretty thrilling in its climactic moments. Its one weakness is a few moments where Nancy is made out to be kind of a ditz. Nonetheless, kudos to Stephan Petrucha and Sho Murase.

I'm usually a big fan of Nancy Drew's, but this isn't what I beleive to be one of the better ones. Nancy and George head off to Emerson College to visit Nancy's boyfriend, Ned, who is participating in the clues challenge along with Nancy, George, and some others from Neds college. Soon the contest turns nasty. I myself was kind of bored by it however. There have been better Nancy Drew's, but nevertheless, it was still a-ok.

In this Nancy Drew Mystery Story, Nancy goes to her boyfriend Ned Nickerson's university with her friends Bess Marvin (a petite, boy-crazy blonde) and George Fayne (Bess's completely opposite cousin--actually a girl, who is sporty and athletic). They are going to be on Ned's fraternity's team in an annual 'scavenger hunt' called The Clues Challenge, but things start to go wrong for their team from the beginning--is someone from another team sabotaging them, or is it part of something deeper...and more mysterious yet. To paraphrase Nancy, 'I'm sure you'll find out!'

OK, the mystery was good, but I HATED how she was with Sasha Petrov. He really bugged me. Then Ned(GO NED!! GO NED!!) comes to visit and has to win nancy back and that is VERY tiring and it gets old.

according to me,this is quite a ridiculous book.in this book, nancy is not allowed to enter the mapleton country club.so what does she do?she sneaks inside the club at 11 p.m. at night and also takes puppet, slave ned with her.talk about illegal!even if she wants to sneak inside in the night, why should poor ned do the same?otherwise it is quite an OKAY book, but not too worthwhile.

An excellent book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This book is about Nancy being framed for something she really didn't do. People say that there is a girl extortionist named Nancy Drew and the police are pointing a finger at the real Nancy Drew. Nancy tries to investigate but the police won't let her. This is very frustrating, and time's running out, so Nancy better find the real criminal before the police arrest her for something she didn't do!

I think I was 13 or 14 when I first read this book, a gift from my godfather for Christmas. I always heard good things about Nancy Drew but never took the time to read them. Course I'm talking about the older ones, which I have read as well. I enjoyed this book, as I have enjoyed every other Nancy Drew book. I own most of them, would love to own them all. I would recommend this to any teenage girl, Nancy Drew is a good role model....course I wouldn't go and get myself into alot of trouble like she seems to do, but it still seems like fun!

Doesn't Nancy know that she's being stupid about the whole going home event. Jake can't help it if he doesn't see her side because he's never been in that kind of situation before. And Bess needs to get over Paul, even though the accident just happend. She just can't hide away inside of herself forever because she's upset. And stephanie is stupid for playing around when she has such a great guy. But i think it's because she's afraid to get hurt. Overall it was a good book- read it.

I don't know if people consider this Keene's best book, but I wouldn't. I like Ned better than Jake, and thought it was sad what happened to Bess. I broke down in tears the exact time she did. I wouldn't be able to come back to college after that. As for Stephanie, I thought she acted pretty much like a loser. Why take it out on your friends? The plot was pretty easy to follow and I ended up solving it without trouble. (Of course, I wasn't there)
