40 Day Journey to the Heart of God: An Adventure in Prayer, is an excellent resource for those wanting to deepen their prayer experience and know more about Biblical principles and prayer.
Tammy Price writes with a spiritual depth that relates to the believer on every level and the book delivers exactly what it's title indicates.
I bought one copy for myself in the Summer of 2007, and since have purchased two more copies for friends because I will not part with my own copy. I still refer to it on a regular basis and find each unit useful and applicable to my spiritual growth and every day life. "40 Day Journey to the Heart of God" is a powerful tool and work for Christian believers!

I got his book for my wife, she is a big Beth Moore fan and it looked like the same people that bought Beth Moore also bought this book. She is just starting the book, but she said she really enjoys it so far. She showed me some verses that she read as part of the study, and they really hit home.

I'll update after the 40 days is up, but so far this really looks like it's going to help her daily walk.

The Most Powerful Book on Prayer I have Read so far!

When I first started reading the introduction to Tammy's book, I knew I was headed for a deeper understanding of Prayer and of God. To say I was hesitant at first would be an understatement. I had no idea if I was ready for what God had for me in this "40-Day Journey to the Heart of God". It has been exactly what I needed for this time in my life. Tammy is an Esther to me and being used "for such a time as this". Thank you, Tammy! I will NEVER BE THE SAME after going through this "An Adventure in Prayer".

If you have been reading into Kabbalah and enjoy meditating this is an excellent way to focus your meditation. It's small and travels well. It provides brief and direct statements.

This is a very interesting book. I fully recommend it to anyone looking for spiritual answers. You may not agree with everything -- and that's OK. But take whatever you get from this book and simply make it yours. You don't have to become a follower of Kabbalah to put some of the ideas into practice. Try it. You may like it.

This is one of the tools Kabbalah offers us, each of the 72 names is for a specific purpose. You meditate on the name or names (one at a time) that you feel you need, in the way the book explains. The names cannot be pronounced, as they are not words, but combinations of letters, so they really don't have a meaning, but each combination of letters has a diferent energy that helps us in the way that is described in each of the meditations!!! If you want to say any specific name you say the letters, for example Mem Hey Shin, which is the name for healing. The meditations are beautiful, very wise words by Yehuda Berg, that touch your heart and your soul!!!
You can also scan the chart with the 72 names of God, in the way that is described in the book, once or twice a day.

This book is very inspirational and the pages are attractively designed. I appreciate the simplicity and the novelty of the technology given for improving the quality of my life. I use it every day in conjunction with 'The 72 Names of God Meditation Deck72 Names of God: Meditation Deck. The card that I choose from the Deck and the corresponding reading from the text indicate the life lesson I need to learn.Additionally I select the Name that I wish to work with. Alexander Scourby's experience as a Shakespearian actor shines through in this beautiful rendering of the bible. The tenor of his voice and perfect intonations makes it easy to imagine this is a character that has lived in the bible era and is simply recounting his experiences back then.

STILL THE BEST VERSION, STILL THE BEST READER!

Years ago I had the King James Bible on cassette, read by Alexander Scourby. It was getting really old and needing replaced. I had someone recommend another King James version audio Bible, so I ordered one. My husband and I were very disappointed, and agreed the other readers were not nearly as good as Alexander Scourby. So I ordered this one again, and was SO glad I did. I hadn't listened to my old audio Bible in a long time, since the cassettes were in such bad shape, and I had forgotten how very REAL and "authentic" Alexander Scourby reads. He makes the Bible really come alive...seems like he takes you back to those days he is reading about! I would highly recommend this audio Bible...you will not be disappointed!

Please purchase this Holy Word. I can say listening to the Holy Bible has changed my life, has helped me when sad, lonely, depressed and angry. Has even helped me get a job to this day! Even though Alexander Scourby speaks the Word. The real glory goes to Jesus Christ and our Father God and no other. That's why this product is so powerful, because Jesus Christ and God controls it.

But to review, this is a great DVD. You have to get this DVD, for example when you get it listen to Psalm 22, which is
"1My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring?2O my God, I cry in the day time, but thou hearest not; and in the night season, and am not silent 3But thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel. 4Our fathers trusted in thee: they trusted, and thou didst deliver them." And more.

But when you listen to that Psalm he really acts it out. So you all know thats the chapter that prophecies Jesus Christs death on the cross. But he just doesn't speak the verse, when he acts the verse out, you can feel the strain, pain, and wearinees in his voice, as the writer supposedly would have said it in Psalm 22. Other books and chapters he acts the verse out to how they would seem to say it. For example, when Jacob lets all his children go to Egypt with Benjamin, you can hear a cry in his voice which is acted out "If I be bereaved, I'm bereaved". That only makes the Bible easier to listen too, it's more than a book, the Word comes while you listen and it comes alive in your life. But may all glory be given to God. This is a GREAT BUY!!! I FINISHED THE WHOLE BIBLE FROM GENESIS TO REVELATION. ONLY BE CAREFUL, SOMETIMES YOU CAN FALL ASLEEP WITH THIS GOOD BIBLE READING, BUT GOD BLESS ALL YOU CHRISTIANS.

Excellent horse stories about the human/horse connection. Good reading on how horses can mirror our emotions.

A touching collection of essays on the bonds between horses and humans.
Helpful Votes: 13 out of 13 total.
Review Date: 2007-05-01
This book comprises a collection of 38 short essays, all submitted by different authors, about the special ways in which horses have impacted their lives. The essays are divided into four categories. "Love and Dreams" focuses on how a the love of horses can affect people; "Healing and Health" contains stories about lessons learned from equine health troubles, as well as ways in which horses have taught people about their own health; "Courage and Endurance" collects stories about equine heroes and horses that have inspired the people around them; and finally "Spiritual Connection and the Afterlife" explores the spiritual and religious experiences humans have had in connection with horses. After each essay the authors pose a question or two for the reader, designed to prompt reflection on how the story may relate to your own life. At the end of each section is a short, fictional "Ask Zeke" page, where the authors have posed a question to their friend's horse, Zeke, and then composed an reply as if Zeke himself were answering. The stories are a mixed bag of themes, and some impacted me more than others. If you aren't a particularly religious person, you may find a couple of the more supernaturally-oriented stories a little harder to relate to, but on the whole the essays presented here are heartfelt and touching. My favorite pieces were "Emily's Song," about a withdrawn, lonely young girl who finally comes out of her shell in order to help and even lonelier, more withdrawn pony, and "Miracles are Something to Believe In," written by a 12-year-old girl who's pony Lilly saved her life by, counter-intuitively enough, falling on her in a freak accident. The book is a quick and easy read, suitable for horse lovers of all ages, and well worth the time. "Angel Horses" would be a great gift for any horse lover, or a nice treat for yourself.

I loved this book!

This is a beautiful, inspirational collection of real life stories of the love, lessons learned and spirtiual connections that people have with horses.
Each story is sensitively told in the own words of the horse's owner/or the person who has the story to tell.
The book's major focus is on the spirituality and sensitivity of the horse and just how deep that goes in these beautiful creatures.
A gentle plea for people to open their hearts and minds to the wisdom and love horses have to offer at all stages of their lives.
I found the book to be touching and refreshing.

As an Angel lover and an Angel believer I was drawn to this title. It is easy reading and can be quite comforting. During a very difficult time I read it and truly felt better. There are many areas, such as LEARNING TO ASK and WHY PEOPLE DON'T ASK GOD FOR HELP? that give insight. There are stories shared, angelic drawings and changes in ink color to keep you directed and interested. A book that eases you from page to page.

This is probably one of the best ANGEL books I have read both in style and in content.

I read their first book about 2 years ago and did follow it a little bit but didn't believe. I find messages quite frequently from my angels to BELIEVE! The hardest thing for us to do. I went to an Angelspeake class with Trudy which was amazing and opened me up to writing to my angels and talking more clearly with them. I get saddened when people have a bad experience and blame their angels. If they read the book they would know the angels protect us, give us love love love love love! They would know the angels are sent from God to help us in our daily lives. Everyone will deal with sorrow in their life to be able to know true joy. One needs only to trust that your angels are their in your time of sorrow or grief and feel their love surrounding you to help you through it. By virtue that we are still on earth means we have more lessons. Ask your angels for help, believe, let go and THANK THEM! These books have been a true Godsend to me. I highly recommend them to anyone in need of a little extra help from above.

"The Angelspeake Book of Prayer and Healing: How to Work With Your Angels" (1997) by Barbra Mark and Trudy Griswold was given to me as a gift a few years ago along with the first volume "Angelspeake: How to Talk With Your Angels." I read the first volume then, and finally got around to reading this one now. The books were signed by Trudy to me, which made them a special gift.

This volume explains the process of communicating with angels, as did the first book, but it also includes answers and questions people had, letters people had for the authors, and advice on what one can do with the ability of angelic communication. The book reads easy and is enjoyable. One thing I realized from the book was what the expression "surrender to God" means. Having read about the phrase elsewhere, it now makes more sense.

What one takes or believes from the book may vary, but from my experience, this book made me think. Because "The Angelspeake Book of Prayer and Healing: How to Work With Your Angels" is written in a clear, understanding manner, my attention did not wander and I was able to duplicate their message all that much better.

Steve Brown's first book is a fabulous introduction with a keen insight into prayer, written in a down-to-earth language. He affirms where you've been, complete with the good parts and the bad parts. He offers you the opportunity to go deeper, but insists it all depends on God calling you there. I borrowed the copy from church, and had to underline. So I bought another copy for the church, and put the purloined, underlined copy on the Keeper Shelf. A simply great read.

Sound Principles For Developing Meaningful Prayer
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2002-03-22
Steve Brown really delves deep into the doctrine for prayer! This is an excellent handbook for people who really want to know not only how to approach God, but what it takes to have satisfying and fulfilling interaction with Him.

Rather than trying to tell people what to pray or even what not to, Mr. Brown gets to the root of the problem... getting started. Mr. Brown's theory is "Unbelievers don't pray because they are afraid that God might be there. Believers don't pray because they are afraid he might not be." He asserts that God is interested in developing a relationship with us not just hearing from us when we want or need something. He explains that before we can have this relationship we need to trust God unconditionally. To leap forward or fall back in total faith that God will be there to catch us and sustain us, even in times when He doesn't seem to answer or even refuses our requests. It is his contention that in contrast many of us try to manipulate or bargain with God often by trying to find out what prayer or combination of prayers will get God to give us the things we desire or help us gain control over our lives and the lives of those we interact with in life.

Steve Brown goes even deeper, exposing how our innate need to control or take over control when we feel God is not there for us short-circuits God's plans for us. He relates quite a bit of relevant scripture including how Jesus tried to teach much of this in His parables and testimony while on earth. He examines the Lord's Prayer which was given to us by Christ as an example of how to pray, not what to pray. In doing so Mr. Brown identifies the key concepts behind the prayer millions have adopted as their prayer, when in actuality they are more often than not just lackadaisically repeating words.

Mr. Brown encourages us to open our hearts and minds in prayer and share our doubts, our fears, our pain, our sin, and our shame because, as it is written, nothing is hidden from God anyway. He just wants to hear it acknowledged by us. Through this confession as well as by relinquishing control and listening for God to speak to us, we allow the Holy Spirit to work in our lives and bring about what is good for us and to develop spiritual attitudes and outward manifestations of our salvation and growth as believers.

Perfect Companion to Tolle's A New Earth

Review Date: 2008-06-25
I have never before been motivated to post a review on Amazon. However, as the facilitator of a series of 6 week book studies on the topic of spirituality, with The Art of Being having been our latest study, I felt motivated to write due to the overwhelming and unified positive response of participants. Previous to this study, we engaged in a 6 week discussion of Eckhart Tolle's book, A New Earth. Since The Art of Being is a collection of essays centered around the topic of being present and living on purpose, it seemed like a natural next title, for Jones's book takes the principles identified so well by Tolle, and applies them, through essays followed by mindfulness practices, to real life. With the language given to us from A New Earth, we joyfully were able to use the essays in The Art of Being to springboard into marvelously rich discussions concerning relevant applications to every day life. The Art of Being allowed A New Earth to come alive for this group. It took principles of being and turned them into practice, and turned our group from being a class, to being a "sangha" (As Jones describes), or a spiritual community. It is a book whose value grew with each visit. In the words of one of the participants, comparing our last two studies, "Reading A New Earth was like enjoying a fine meal. Reading The Art of Being was like finishing with a delectable dessert."

101 Things I Liked About This Book...

...namely every single vignette.

In a world filled with distractions (or at least potential distractions), author Dennis Jones has assembled 101 peaceful reflections that he uses to help us focus on just being. This delightful book just oozes with a sense of peace and encouragement to be reflective about all that we have been blessed with.

I especially liked the way each vignette was punctuated with a couple of practices for integrating the message of the vignette into our lives.

For me, this is a book to be savored...to absorb one vignette at a time and really reflect on Jones' wisdom. Doing so, as I have been doing over recent weeks, creates a book with the potential to really make a difference in one's life.

I love this book. Triple kudos Dennis Jones.

I have not heard one word out of Dr. Dennis Merritt Jones that is not only brilliant, but very relevant to living a life today on purpose. This book is a must read if you want to get more out of your existance each and every day!

The Art of Being is a practical guide to meaningful spiritual practices that help us recognize the divinity that has always existed within each of our beings. Dr. Jones provides "Mindfulness" practices in the back of each chapter that help bring this recognition into our consciousness. My wife, daughter and I are now reading it together for the third time. Each time we read a chapter, we find something new and inspiring. I highly recommend it, it can be life transforming.

This is a book that I have used, loaned, lost, bought and loaned again. Now I just give it as a gift to any friend in pastoral ministry that seems to be giving too much. It is a book that will quiet the noise of constantly trying to be more than God calls one to be.
I highly recommend it to anyone beginning their ministry.

This simple book has been an important tool in helping me recover a sense of peace and serenity in parish ministry. The challenges and struggles of ministry are intense. The answer for me has been found in returning to a place of quiet, listening, and trust. The Art of Pastoring is a MUST READ for anyone in full-time parish work.

I have used this book for personal as well as community meditation ever since its first publication by CTS several years ago. As many others, I sincerely wish it were required reading in seminary and by corporate-type lay leadership who want a pastor to be a CEO rather than a pastor. I must disagree with the reviewer who faulted the book (modestly) for its lack of stress on the prophetic aspects of ministry. After all, wasn't Thomas Merton a contemplative who had a great deal to write concerning the prophetic issues of peace and justice, let alone racism? This book has been formative in enabling my continuation in ministry.

I felt like I'd had a good massage after reading this book.

After 30 years in parish ministry, I wish I could have read this book slowly each year. I would have been more relaxed and focused. Martin takes the best from Eastern (Taoist) thought and puts it into a Christian framework. It's soothing. It's therapeutic. Especially for Type 'A' pastors like myself. We need these grace-filled thoughts to reflect on. My only caveat is a theological one. A few of Martin's reflections seem to blunt the edge of prophetic ministry--the concern for justice and equality in the world. It's that "everything is already perfect" Eastern notion. I realize the paradox involved in accepting "what is" in order to change or be changed. I wonder what Amos or Jeremiah would think about "everything is already perfect." That being said, I recommend this little volume for its peace-evoking words. I have used it in daily prayer to help me "let go." These words on page 24 keep ringing in my ears: "If you want to be a wise and true minister of the Word, work a modest number of hours each week, then go home." Amen.

It Pretty Well Enlists Everyone to the Battle

I've read a lot of spiritual warfare books, and also Eastern warrior philosophy. What is different about this book is that it draws from all sides of the issue. The Eastern discipline is here, and the best of Sun Tzu, Lao Tzu, Buddha, and the others, but you can definitely see Schnarr's Christian leanings about the battle against the "dark forces" and about the conflict between devils and angels. What this does is instead of alienating one side or the other, the book appeals to the best in all. Whether it's the Holy War of Islam, the conquering of self of Eastern philosophy, or the bold fight against the forces of evil in Judeo-Christian terms, it's all there, and all are called to battle. I also like that the battle starts with the individual, and is not some sort of call to change the world and forget about your own problems. He says if you want to change the world, begin with yourself. It's the best book on spiritual warfare I have ever read.

Physical Warfare as a Guide for Spiritual Gains

Grant Schnarr is someone who has experienced addictions and has had many spiritual battles of his own. He is now a Swedenborgian minister, and uses the lessons of his spiritual battles to help his readers understand ways to make more spiritual progress. In The Art of Spiritual Warfare, he draws on 13 selected readings from Sun Tzu's, The Art of War (often a source for thinking about business strategy), as the base for pursuing our own spiritual journeys. Candor about his own life and thoughts make this book more appealing and useful.

If you are not familiar with Sun Tzu, he was a profound thinker about the strategy of warfare who lived in China about 2,000 years ago. He is best known for the book that is the basis of this one. That description makes it sound like he was some kind of militant war-monger. Actually, Sun Tzu was more of what I would call a "judo" thinker -- use your enemy's strengths and weaknesses to avoid battle and retain the upper hand. "Those who win every battle are not really skillful -- those who render others' armies helpless without fighting are the best of all . . . ." He especially counseled on the importance of spies to help you understand the enemy and advance thinking to select the ground for confrontation in a way that would give you an overwhelming advantage that would discourage the enemy from attacking. So, long before Freud, Sun Tzu was really looking at the nature of human psychology to appreciate how to influence it positively for yourself in the very dangerous business of military preparations and battle.

The strength of this book is that Grant Schnarr is very effective in translating Sun Tzu's principles into insights about how to know yourself better and make spiritual progress easier and more certain. The book is simple, clear, and well-written.

For example, in chapter 4, he cites Sun Tzu as saying "In ancient times skillful warriors first made themselves invincible and then watched for vulnerability in their opponents . . . ." Mr. Schnarr interprets that meaning that we need to focus on ourselves, to "become strong in areas that are weak, seek health where there is spiritual sickness, and build upon the moral and spiritual strengths which already exist within." To do this, he proposes using spiritually guided meditation to prepare stronger defenses against one's own negative feelings. You will still have the negative feelings, but you learn to control them before acting on them. You are then able to step outside the passion of the moment and see yourself objectively, and select the action (or inaction) that best serves your spiritual needs.

There were several useful insights that I received from this book that had never occurred to me before. Perhaps they will help you, too. First, if you find negative thoughts and actions are associated with a given situation . . . stay out of that situation. He tells the story about a woman who fought with her son every morning about getting ready for school on time. This was tearing their relationship apart and making both of them feel terrible all day. Mr. Schnarr recommended that she ask her husband to handle this with their son, instead. The father and son had few problems, and the mother was able to stay in bed. Everyone was much better off.

Second, if you are finding a given spiritual conflict too difficult, retreat and work on an easier one. For example, if you cannot control your anger, but can control your overeating, work on the latter. The spiritual strength that you gain from making progress where you are strong enough to do so will serve you well in those areas where you are not. Eventually, you can return to working on your anger and expect to be more successful because your spiritual capability has grown.

Third, get a better understanding of when you are at your best and worst spiritually. Then use those understandings to week out the former circumstances and avoid the latter. Also, learn to change the way you think in the latter situations. To me, this is a most valuable concept for introspection.

Last year, I attended a discussion of spirituality that left me feeling quite challenged. The speaker, a rabbi, proposed that the correct spiritual standard was to have no thought of doing the wrong thing spiritually or physically. That seemed impossible and unattainable. But Mr. Schnarr's advice helped me see that by organizing my life correctly, I could spend more time in circumstances and thoughts that would leave me with no such temptations. Thank you for these insights!

The book is organized so that each chapter begins with a quotation from Sun Tzu. Frequently, that quotation is also used as part of the text of the chapter. Then you will find examples of spiritual battles, and how Sun Tzu's principle can be applied to them. Next is a brief section called "Further Applications" that looks specifically at one or two examples. Finally, there are tasks (usually three) at the end of each chapter to help you apply what you have just learned. Often these tasks involve introspection and meditation. I found the tasks to be very helpful. In an appendix, there is a guide for using these materials in a workshop if you wish to teach them to others. This is perfect for a mountain retreat type of conference.

After you have finished the book and applied its lessons, I have another task for you. Think of a book that has profoundly influenced you for the better. Write down the 10 most important lessons that you learned from that book. Then, spell out how to apply those lessons to improving the spiritual lives of those you care most about. After you have done that, repeat the process with another influential book. This will keep you on the spiritual offensive and help you become stronger spiritually.

May health, happiness, peace, and prosperity follow you all the days of your life!

Grant Schnarr has successfully interpreted and applied Sun Tzu's ancient military teachings to our own individual spiritual lives and battles.

This book is a well written and easily readable resource for anyone pursuing a journey of self-improvement and spiritual growth. It is unique in its application of ancient Chinese wisdom in a modern spiritual context. Already embraced by leaders of the men's movement, I predict this book will reach far beyond any one movement or group of people.

As a physician, who is also a martial arts student and someone interested in spiritual development, I find this book to be very useful and entertaining.

Mr. Schnarr is to be congratulated on writing a book that brings together ideas from ancient Chinese thought, Taoism, Judaism, Christianity and other religions. He forms a cohesive vision of spiritual development and growth that encompasses all people who have a sincere interest in spiritual growth. By growing ourselves we help others.

As Mr. Sncharr writes towards the end of the book; "...by walking with intention and nobility, as a true spiritual warrior, you make this world a better place for all of us."

Help for Young Men Seeking Honest Answers

This book is so effective because it teaches us how to honestly evaluate our thoughts and behavior. It inspires us to want to change for our own happiness and for the sake of others, without self-condemnation. Tackling destructive thoughts and behavior becomes exciting work. It teaches us how to look to a higher power to do this. Because of the universal truths involved in spiritual battle as described by Grant Schnarr, we can use the book and still feel true to our personal religious faiths. It also will greatly appeal to readers for whom traditional religions haven't worked. Anyone who feels something is missing in their life, who feels disconnected from others by depression, anxiety, or boredom or who needs a fresh approach to personal growth will love this book. I see it as especially useful for young men because it engages the masculine mind to do spiritual battle in a way that inspires the best that is within them. This, in turn, brings a sense of connectedness to other people, fulfillment and a sense of peace. It can be very effective for everyone, but I think this book is ground breaking for men who have been looking for the right approach--creative and active--to personal growth.

A Guide to Inner Peace based on Sun Tzu's Art of War? Well think about it--this is a world of paradoxes. What is the biggest obstacle to achieving inner peace? Perhaps it is our own self. What if we waged a war against our inner negativity, our doubts and our fears? Could we use the optimal book on war to conquer our inner demons and establish a beachhead for a state of personal bliss? This book gives detailed advice on how to view your internal dialogues as potential enemies and allies and finding peace. Remaining always aware and alert to how we think and believe is great advice. The book realigned how I view my personal commitment to self improvement.
