Fr. Barry has provided so many insights into ways to further friendship with God especially by asking the reader to pause, imagine, and reflect on a scriptural experience. His encouragement to "talk" with God about any situation is particularly helpful to this reader.

Good - But Not What I Expected

This was a helpful book, but I guess I expected it to be more "warm and fuzzy" in terms of developing a friendship with the Lord. The book was more theological, focusing on Bible passages, etc. I did find these scripture verses to be helpful, but the book has a much more serious tone than I was expecting. I am not against this kind of tone for a religious book, but for a book focusing on FRIENDSHIP, I did expect a little more warmth. I'm not disappointed in my purchase as there was much wonderful content in this book and it did help my friendship with the Lord grow. Just not as much as I was hoping.

A beautiful book....

Fr. Barry has done it again. I fell in love with his writing in his book
God and You and it has proved to be a constant source of spiritual refreshment. Now A Friendship Like No Other rests on my night table and offers peace and new insight every evening. His fine mind asks us to tackle the most provocative questions honestly: why God allows bad things to happen; where are the "thin places" in your world, places where the Irish say the border between heaven and earth is thinner, more porous, and God is able to "leak through." His allusions to victims of the Holocaust are especially poignant. Another beautiful, accessible book from Fr. Barry. Mary Claire Richardson PS I have sent it to my 88 year old Aunt and my 40 year old friend suffering from a brain tumor.

Simple and compelling metaphor

Review Date: 2008-05-13
It is easy to get lost or confused when trying to love God or feel loved by God. Religions provide so many rules. Father Barry gives us a simple metaphor, a loving relationship. He asks us to consider how much we live as if God is out to punish us; he urges us toward a new understanding of God and Jesus. The path to a closer relationship with God is the same as the path to a closer relationship with another person. In thinking this way, I can come up with all kinds of ways of loving God more and feeling more loved by God. This book is also a modern interpretation of the Ignatius Spiritual Exercises. Almost all 21st century Christians will find Ignatius's 16th century exercises daunting and altogether politically incorrect. Barry's exercises blend imagination and scripture reading in a most Ignatian way. Although specifically Christian in some chapters, the book is written in an open way to invite anyone who believes in God to build a closer relationship with their higher power.

Excellent book I recommend for all women. They will definitely know their worth in GOd's eyes and give them direction in their life - for them and their families, friends, etc. Johnnette Benkovic is a gifted writer and evangelist. No woman will be the same after reading her book. Everyone I gave it to agree with this and it changed their lives.

As a Catholic women in her 20s, I often feel that literature is written to women older than me who have children at home or even grown children. I find it hard to relate to these kind of books, and I usually try to stay away from them. This was not the case at all with this book. I found myself relating to it on so many different levels, and now, several weeks after finishing the book, I still hear Benkovic's words in my head as I go through my daily routine, attend Mass, and seek to live a Christ-centered life. I believe Catholic women, of all ages and levels of spiritual maturity, will be able to relate to and benefit from reading this book.

When I realize that I missed the opportunity to meet this man by a just a smidge, it instantly makes me want to cry. I had been into Buddhism at the time he was still alive, but not too seriously. I collected books, you know, and half-read some, finished some and all the while wasn't sure exactly what I thought of it. If I could blame someone other than myself, I suppose I would blame the New Age market out there which seems to expand exponentially every year and seems to be giving the same generic advice to an ever-broadening audience of desperate hopefuls that any path can lead to enlightenment while all the while never sticking to one path. Rather, it's mixed into a bubbling pot of flavor-of-the-week to sip now and again, as desired. By contrast, any form of Buddhism, including the watered-down westernized "psychology-only" flavor seems too tough and too complicated or too boring, too austere.

But this book is different! This author is different!

Chagdud Tulku Rinpoche's many available books, practice text, cassettes and cds are unfailing evidence that this man was a great teacher. This book is no exception. He has an extraordinary ability to make the notoriously complex Tibetan Buddhism very simple and easy for westerners to practice. This book might be the pinnacle of those powers. So clear, so precise, so simple. All you have to do is follow his advice.

But, this is where most people have difficulty. Many other books make the practice seem simple enough on the outset, but the actual practice of doing this stuff hangs over your head because, while it might be simple enough, and make enough sense, there is no real desire to actually do the practice as others teach it. This is not true with "Gates To Buddhist Practice" (or ANY of Chagdud Tulku Rinpoche's books). This book immediately inspires you to practice. Just reading a few paragraphs makes you want to put it down and do a few prostrations, some visualization, some mantra, some generosity... SOMETHING! ANYTHING! This is because Chagdud doesn't just make it easy to understand, he teaches with compassion and lots of it. Compassion is the understanding of our suffering condition from the perspective of one who knows better. That compassion comes through loud and clear, so not only are you emotionally moved by his generosity and effort in these brilliantly crafted lessons, you get a sense of the understanding from an enlightened perspective. For example, if you see someone suffering and you don't know what to do about it, you will feel sad for sure; but, if you see someone suffering and you know exactly WHY they are suffering and WHAT to do about it, this awakens a different emotion in you similar to a maternal instinct. This is the compassion that Chagdud communicates. Once it is communicated, it changes your outlook completely and inspires you to action.

In fact, this quality has been carried on in Chagdud's students, which again shows what a great teacher he really was to produce so many more fine teachers. Go to any Chagdud Gonpa center and you will be moved. Go check out some of Lama Tsering Everest's podcasts available online and you will be moved in that same way.

This man knew the essence of the dharma and he knew how to teach it.
If you don't know where to begin with Tibetan Buddhism, this is the book for you. As Chagdud says on page 53, people are in a hurry to move beyond "kindergarten dharma" but the essence of the dharma is very simple! Because it is simple, it is often overlooked. People mistakenly think, "oh yeah, I get that, but there must be more..." while never "getting it" at all. You can't just read about the Four Thoughts, the Four Immeasurables, Bodhicitta, et cetera without actually transforming yourself by practice and think "oh yeah, I get that." It's not an intellectual abstraction to "get" in a relatively superficial sense. The essence is completely transformative to the mind and must be cultivated thoroughly within oneself in order for the essence to be "got."

Ignoring the simple essence in favor of superior teachings of the Highest Yoga Tantra, for example, will get you nowhere fast because you must realize when advancing to the superior teachings that the superior teachings are only superior if you realize they contain all the inferior teachings as well. One does not go beyond the essence of the dharma no matter how superior the teachings become. The danger of the more advanced teachings for westerners is that we are already highly intellectual and this is tied into our cynical nature. We love to dissect and evaluate things almost as a form of entertainment which, like all entertainment, achieves nothing but distraction. The higher teachings are incredibly abstract and difficult. They can entertain the intellect for years without accomplishing a thing. This is the reason they are traditionally saved for LAST in Tibetan culture. With the chinese occupation of Tibet, however, the dharma has been spread out around the rest of the world maybe a bit unevenly. Even a lowly practioner such as myself was able to receive transmission for the Great Perfection practices. I'm not complaining because it has been very helpful to me. In fact, it clarified what the Lesser Vehicles were trying to teach me.

And, for this reason, reading Chagdud Tulku again with a fresh eye makes me realize what an astounding teacher he really was. He combined the highest teachings right in with the simplest essence of the dharma. He had the View of Dzogchen and he integrated it with Vajrayana practice. If only one reads his advice and practices, that person will go far with Chagdud's instruction!

If this book inspires you as I know it will, my advice for the "next step" would be to seek out the practice texts and explanatory books and lectures on Red Tara Practice and Dudjom Tersar Ngondro from Chagdud Gonpa's online website, TibetanTreasures-dot-com. These tantric practices have been concisely perfected and translated into English by Chagdud Tulku himself for western students and are perfect for these fast-paced times.

Now available in a newly revised edition, Chagdud Tulku's Gates To Buddhist Practice: Essential Teachings Of A Tibetan Master offers the reader a firm grounding in Buddhist principles, illustrated with many anecdotes from the Tulku's native home of Tibet. Tulku is a meditation master, artist, and healer who has continued to travel and teach in both the East and the West; the questions he encountered while teaching form the basis to the revisions of this new edition. Gates to Buddhist Practice is a sobering, thoughtful, inspiring presentation that covers numerous aspects of Buddhism in depth, from karma and Bodhicitta to preparing oneself for death. Strongly recommended for Buddhist Studies reading lists and reference collections.

As this book makes clear, at its heart Buddhist teaching offers an approach to living that emphasizes compassion, simplicity, and peace. Understanding this core is essential to spiritual progress, but it's rare to find a text that so elegantly addresses the cultural issues that may impede this process. "Gates to Buddhist Practice" is such a book. I found the frank discussions of all kinds of issues refreshingly straightforward and clear. Chagdud Rinpoche is obviously a teacher of profound insight and consummate skill, and I'd recommend "Gates" to anyone interested in gaining fuller understanding of a Buddhist approach to critical issues of life, death, and spirituality. At a time when a lot of us are feeling unmoored and stressed out, it's a blessing to have difficult questions answered in a way that is insightful and provocative without being pat or simplistic. I highly recommend this book.

A great read for both newcomers to Buddhism and scholars

Those who love reading books by the Dalai Lama and Sogyal Rinpoche will enjoy the clear, insightful writing of Chagdud Tulku Rinpoche. Newcomers will love the simple prose and delightful stories from old Tibet and modern America. Those who have read much of the American literature, will appreciate the simple, subtle references to the many dimensions of Tibetan Buddhism. This book is a favorite which I read and re-read, always finding more sustenance.

Those who are interested in bringing a non-violent and humanistic approach to world problems, will love Chagdud Tulku's willingness to bring the benefits of the Tibetan Buddhist approach to daily life at home and in the world. I work with law students and lawyers who are trying to bring a non-violent approach to a profession weary of aggression and the old ways. And, I assign "Gates of Buddhist Practice" to law students of all faiths. It is fascinating to watch how Chagdud Tulku talks about Tibetan Buddhist tools for cultivating compassion, skillfulness and wisdom. While he uses some Buddhist terminology, his tone is open and inclusive. It serves as a "gateway", itself, into ecumenical dialogue. In these times in which so many conflicts find their roots in misunderstandings among religious perspectives, this skillful and wise approach is sorely needed.

I can't imagine a better book to give to a friend or to buy for yourself. (Put this book under the tree for yourself!) I hope that you will find much joy, solace and understanding in this book, as I have..........And, I hope that you, too, will hear the greatest gift of this book, which is between the words on each page..the love of a great spiritual master.

In this so-called introduction into Tibetan Buddhism, we learn from a great wisdom tradition about the contours of human consciousness and we come away lighter and refreshed.

I love this book. In it Chagdud Tulku Rinpoche offers the most clear, complete and concise overview of Tibetan Buddhism that I have read. The teachings can be appreciated, and clearly understood on many levels, from a person who is completely new to Buddhism to an experienced practitioner. I have often recommended the first edition of this book to friends who are curious and looking for an introduction to Tibetan Buddhism, and they have found it very helpful. This new edition has been expanded to include more questions from students, many of which are very in-depth and result in detailed answers that make the reader feel as if they were sitting in front of Rinpoche while he teaches.
The book also includes many of Chagdud Tulku Rinpoche's wonderful stories and Tibetan folk tales that serve to illuminate the teachings in a very down to earth manner. This book is like a polestar, such a comfort to come back to again and again for inspiration and guidance, showing us the way to tame and train our minds. I would recommend this book very highly.

Other reviewers have described the breadth and depth of Glass-Coffin's study of Northern Peruvian curanderas and have noted how effectively she weaves her personal story through the book. I would like to add my kudos as well. I appreciated the solid historical context and enjoyed reading about her experiences with some of the ancient healing traditions and their modern incarnations. Having traveled through the region myself, I have can concur with her observations about some of the differences between male and female practitioners. It provides much food for thought.

Glass-Coffin's book will provide a great deal of insight for anyone interested in healing traditions or South American history. Although Post-conquest influences have mutated the expression of native spirituality, they did not completely eradicate time honored practices.

We have all enjoyed the charming and entertaining look at sorcery and witchcraft as experienced by the fictional Harry Potter. No less interesting and fascinating is Bonnie Glass-Coffin's realistic look at sorcery and shamanism as they exist in South America today. "The Gift of Life" incorporates Glass-Coffin's extensive research as a talented anthropologist with her own personal healing experiences to produce a highly readable and well-documented book on female shamans (healers) in Northern Peru. She provides a history of sorcery and healing in South America, a contextual explanation and description of the healing practices of five different female shamans she met while in Peru, and an examination of gender and socioeconomic differences in the world of spiritual healing. Academic rigor does not preclude a "good read". Scholars and general readers alike will be pleased with this book. When I loaned the book to a friend who has traveled in Peru, she returned it quickly, noting "This is too good not to have a copy of my own!" I recommend it highly.

Contemporary Women Healers in Peru

Prior to THE GIFT OF LIFE, little had been written about the role women play in healing and shamanism in Northern Peru. Part of the reason for this oversight had to do with the way European colonization brought the concept of "witchcraft" to Peru, and the fact that Peruvian women who practiced traditional healing arts were frequently beaten and tortured until they confessed to standard European-style "witchcraft" practices. Author Bonnie Glass-Coffin was trained as an anthropologist, so she knew that women have historically played a large part in shamanism from looking at the ancient sculptures of the Moche and Chimu, which both portray women involved in healing arts. With the intention to find and interview modern-day women shamans in Peru, Glass-Coffin set out to do exactly that.

Bonnie Glass-Coffin shares the stories from five female curanderas (shamans) she met with between April 1988 and September 1989. Her extraordinary book, THE GIFT OF LIFE, describes the daily life of these female curanderas and the story of how they became healers, and includes black and white photographs of their mesas (curing altars) and healing herbs (plants such as the San Pedro cactus). Glass-Coffin's background in anthropology and her accounts of her experiences living in Peru as she grew up give this book a unique feeling of personal relevance and social perspective.

I was impressed that THE GIFT OF LIFE does not shy away from describing the ways curanderas have used their spiritual powers on some occasions for sorcery. Glass-Coffin describes "dano" as intended harm by sorcery, and tells stories and includes pictures of how Peruvians have discovered and dealt with the harmful magic of others. She also describes some of the differences between male and female healers in Peru -- such as the way female curanderas tend to involve patients more directly in their healing. I was also impressed that Glass-Coffin described her own personal involvement being healed by curanderas, giving this book tremendous warmth. The first-hand accounts of what it feels like to suffer as the recipient of a dano help the reader better understand the way our thoughts and feelings affect one another.

I give this book my highest recommendation to anyone who is interested in ancient traditional ways of healing, wishes to know what is unique about women healers, and is intrigued by reading stories about how our thoughts and feelings affect others.

I like learning all about the Bible and the people and stories. But my favorite part of this book is the crafts. I made the Bible bag (page 24) and take my Bible and stuff to church in it every week. I also did the tie-dye shirt (page 41) and I can't wait to do the rest of the crafts.

As soon as I opened "Give God The Glory! Called To Be Light In The Workplace" by Kevin Wayne Johnson, I knew that this was going to be one of the most inspirational book reads of my life. Kevin Wayne Johnson sums up all of a worker's desires, and wants as one takes on responsibilities in the workplace. However, this book is told with the kind of clarity, spiritualism and focus that will lead readers to carry the book around like a bible in the workplace for all to see.

Kevin Wayne Johnson's book heralds what a modern day worker should aspire to be, from the moment one walks through the workplace door, takes on the role of being a leader for the well being of all, and of course serving God as one's only source of inspiration, hope and guidance who embodies all that is precious and good.

Then and only then, will a worker be able to displace negativity with growth, stamina, will power and the determination to succeed. I was inspired by the cartoon depictions, and powerful quotes in this professional and spiritual book of guidance, such as " I missed more than 9000 shots in my career, I've lost almost 300 games, 26 times, I've been trusted to take the winning shot, and missed. I've failed over and over again in my life, And that is why I succeed," as quoted from the legendary Michael Jordan himself.

The care and authorial symbolism constructed in this treasure is a journey every person on their way to success should take and keep in mind like Attorney Johnny Cochran, Jr. has mentioned as well, "People are successful not because of what they say, but because of what they ask." You will ask many questions as you read Give God The Glory: Called To Be Light In The Workplace, but of yourself and place in society along with God.

There are also, spiritual quotes from the bible and soul-filled messages by Kevin Wayne Johnson himself, who is not only on his way to completing 9 books for The Give God The Glory Series, but helping folks from around the nation to develop a personal relationship with God to find inner peace, success, and the will power to enhance one's life with daily prayer. I am a believer in this man's work, and like T.D. Jakes and others who have taken a leading role to use the written word to influence a nation, I believe that Kevin Wayne Johnson is on his way to being a leader of our time. "Give God The Glory: Called To Be Light In The Workplace" is a powerful message YOU must not miss.

There is a song I remember from childhood, with the words 'rise shine give God glory', and this book brought this memory to mind, but I digress. GIVE GOD THE GLORY is much more than a song or a memory. It is a wake up message about family.

GIVE GOD THE GLORY: The Godly Family Life is Johnson's teachings on the family unit according to the dictates of God. He believes there is a formula for living and it starts with family. He focuses first on the persons who make up the family base; fathers. The father is the foundation of the family, family is the foundation of the church and the church is the foundation of the Body of Christ.

But GIVE GOD THE GLORY talks about every component of the family unit. It is sectioned in three distinct parts 'The Significance and Role of the Father', 'The Impact and Role of the Mother', and 'The Phases and Role of the Child'. With the use of scriptural men, biblical scriptures, his own life experiences and indisputable statistics, he substantiates his beliefs. Johnson envisions this book will change lives.

This is the fourth book, of his Give God the Glory series, and he believes this may be his most compelling. He forecasts that if the principals taught in this book are applied, they will strengthen existing families and serve as a guide to those who want to start successful families. Along with his messages he has included worksheets at the end of each chapter for personal accountability. This is a thoroughly inspirational read.

Deacon Johnson has used his own walk with the Lord and scriptures from the Bible to assist in teaching us how we should Glorify the Lord.
This book can be enjoyed by the seasoned Christian reader as well as the novice. All of the scriptures have been so eloquently broken down in language that we can all understand. "Give God The Glory", will put a fire under you to get out and spread the Word.
The scriptures tell us that we each are given spiritual gifts. This book expounded on those gifts and helps us to identify our spiritual gift or gifts. Also, how we can use them in our everyday life.
References to the scriptures, the men in the Bible and what steps we all need to take to become stronger Christians are all included.
The thought provoking questions provided at the end of the chapter helped to reinforce the learning process.
Pick up a copy of this book and grab your Bible. This book is an excellent study guide to add to your library.

Kevin Wayne Johnson's Give God the Glory is a wonderful instructional book broken up into two parts: KNOW GOD and DO THE WILL OF GOD. In Part One, he teaches readers how to glorify God at all times, comprehend that they are "called" whether they realize it or not, and learn how to recognize and utilize their personal spiritual gifts. In Part Two, he teaches readers to spread the gospel, stand tall, and be a blessing to others.

While those may seem like simple requests, most people do not act upon them daily and Give God the Glory shows us how we can make it a habitual part of our lives. Each chapter ends with a list of questions to consider, which enables readers to analyze what they have just read and fully acclimate it into their souls.

For those searching for an easy-to-read guide on spiritual enhancement, Give God the Glory is a wonderful selection. It is extremely positive to see a young African American male pen such a book because our male youth need more mentors to look to for assistance in their spiritual growth.

You are a Christian, Now What?

Have you ever asked yourself what it means to be a Christian and how can you
glorify God and do his will? These are the questions that Kevin Wayne Johnson
tackles in his first book, Give God the Glory.

The language used in the book is descriptive, understandable and clear. For
each topic that is discussed, the reader is provided with Old and New Testament
Biblical references. In addition, the author provides contextual information,
references and lots of easy to understand definitions. The book provides a
blueprint of how to strengthen your Christian walk.

One of my favorite parts of this book was the section that covered spiritual
gifts. In this section, different types of gifts were identified and
explained. This section led me to ask myself, "What are the gifts that God has
given me and am I using them or letting them go to waste?"

This book will have you grabbing pen and paper so that you can take notes. It
is thorough and inspiring. The book raises a lot of tough questions that need
to be addressed by Christians. You will find yourself searching your soul as
you try to answer the questions he raises. Most important, reading this book
can help put you on a path that will help you strengthen and further develop
your relationship with God. I am sure that if you read this book with an open
heart and answer the questions to consider that the author has listed at the
end of each chapter, you will be touched. This was an excellent book and I
hope that Mr. Johnson continues his writing for the Lord.

This is a beautiful book. Sentiments of comfort and hope are combined with beautiful art and photography for a book that is lovely to behold. It was a great comfort to me when I found it after multiple pregnancy losses. It is one I give to friends when they lose a pregnancy too. The hope of eternal life for grieving parents is shown in these pages. I highly recommend it as a gift to the grieving.

This is a beautiful book of prose and suggestions regarding the loss of unborn children. It should, however, be titled "...: Surviving the Loss of AN UNBORN Child, Words and Poetry to Calm a Broken Heart." Though the artwork and prose evidence Ms. Brady's talents in art technology and advertising, this book is not for one who is looking for clinical assistance in overcoming the death of a child. I was hoping for more clinical details describing the stages a parent might go through in dealing with the death of a child, and how medical and social professionals could assist them through this extraordinarily difficult period. HOWEVER, I HAD to give the book at least four stars because it is ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL, and the writing is spectacular. I would definitely recommend it as a purchase to give to a friend or family member who has lost a young or unborn child.

This book is a must for anyone who has been touched by the loss of a child. It has been 14 years since my son died from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. I wish that someone could have handed this to me that first day to help me through some really tough first nights. The book is full of comforting words, great insights and wonderful advise. You will want to have this book on hand for emergencies, now you can make a difference immediately by giving such an incredible gift in a time of need. Kimberli touches your heart with words of comfort, encouragement and healing...I can't wait to read her next book.

I rarely get real excited about devotional books. However, this has become one of my favorite books. It balances well the use of Scripture and the use of anecdotes. I shy away from books that rely strictly on stories to convey their message. This relies a lot on Scripture, but not so much as to be overwhelming or hard to read. It truly helped me to see God in a different way. I highly recommend this book!

We all have times of doubt about who God is and if His character is consistent with who He claims to be. Chip Ingram brings the one true God, the God Almighty, before you and gives you a clear understanding of who God is and why He is Lord of All. Chip Ingram is one of my favorite authors, there is no question he is led completely by the Holy Spirit and his style of writing is so personal that you are moved from the moment you begin reading his books. This book is no different from his others in that they are powerful, inspirational, and filled with a message straight from God. You will find yourself face to face with God throughout this book and you are sure to draw even nearer to Him. I would highly recommend this as well to anyone who is questioning their beliefs in God, a friend or relative who does not know God, or someone just struggling in life who needs to know God is with them. I HIGHLY recommend, "God As He Longs for You to See Him!"

We love this book! My husband and I read it to our 4 year-old son. The storiess cover topics like temper, empathy, charity, obeying, anger, love, etc. It teaches Christian themes with a Bible verse for each story. They are not "bible stories" like Daniel in the Lion's Den. But, it is surely Bible based. The stories are about 1/2 page and then have 3-4 simple questions at the end. There is also an activity/craft with each, also.

This book has been great for family devotions! I have three kids under 5, and they all can listen and learn from these devotions. The book also has good applications for each lesson, and the stories have engaged my kids. The stories are fun and don't seem contrived. My kids always enjoy doing devotions now!

I have two boys. One who is almost four, the other is two and a half. They both enjoy this book, though it seems more suitable for my oldest. Each "lesson" is two pages. One page has a story and questions to discuss. The other page is a quick activity that relates...and can be photo copied for each kid. It's a good way to get your kids thinking about who God is and why that matters to them. Also the questions for discussion could probably meet one or two curriculum standards for homeschooling if that interests you.

You don't need to go in a particular order, so you can choose to use the topics you're dealing with at the time. This is a character-building, educational and interactive devotional.
