Kenneth Boa defines 12 facets of the Christian life and deals with each one in a thoroughly practical, yet deeply theological way. He does seem to think that Christians can be demon-possessed, a view which I do not hold. In spite of that, I recommend the book to the seasoned Christan. Written in textbook style, it makes for extended Bible studies for mid-week gatherings, home studies, etc. There are a great number of resources from which he cites quotes, and the cost of the book is worth the resource list alone. I particularly enjoyed the facet about the Christian Disciplines. In a day of hyper-faith, wealth, prosperity, and health gospel, this book is a refreshing return to sanity. I wish I had it years ago.

I don't have alot of time in the day to just sit down and read something...but this is something that I hope will be passed down generation to generation as a "treasure". I do have a couple of minutes each morning to read a quick uplifting thought to keep my spirit happy for the day and give me something to think about...and hopefully pass on to others. This book should be a staple in every home.

Living Water--Streams in the Desert
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2007-05-17
As a desert dweller, I know how important water is. Here, we never travel without a bottle of water, even to the grocery store. Christ said He came to give us living water--that is what this book does. It quenches the thirst of the soul--that inward longing we all have for more than what can be found in our material lives.
Over the years, I have read many daily devotionals. Streams in the Desert is without a doubt the most unique, and the most encouraging. First published in 1925, this book is a fountain of wisdom and encouragement. While the language might seem a bit old-fashioned to some, it is not a deterrent to the subject matter. The book is Bible-based, and quotes are from individuals, sermons, poems, stories, hymns, and of course, the Bible itself.
All of us deal with hardship in our lives--for me it is cancer. I use this book in tandem with my daily Bible reading and prayer.
Streams in the Desert comforts; it speaks to suffering, encourages faith, and would be an excellent gift for anyone who is going through difficult times.
Or for anyone who is thirsty for that living water.

Peace in a storm

This is one devotional you must have as you journey through life. Mrs Charles Cowman reminds the faithful follower of Christ that storms and trials that beset one actually come to make one more like Jesus.
In it there is refreshment for the soul who cannot seem to see the light at the end of the tunnel, as well as encouragement that the Master has it all planned out for His Glory.
Above all else it tells the age old story - trials are not new, only recycled and are common to man.
In this devotional, each new passage gives one testimony that cheers the soul, that all is well, that all will be well.

I have been a Christian for many years and student of the laws of the mind for the last 8 or so. Im all of my readings, this book, by far, has been the most clear, concise, and complete presentation of the Law of the Universe that i have ever read. 100 or pages of pure power packed truth that is easy to read and understand whether you are just starting this path or have been on it for many years. Whether you believe in Jesus or not, whether you believe in the laws of the mind or not, this IS the way the world works. This book is a must read for the entire world. We are all putting these truths into effect every day consciously or unconsciously. If you dont read another book this year, read this one.

I used to think that success was all about having a lot of money, having a big house, and wearing diamond studded underwear. Sure, there is nothing wrong with these things...except maybe the diamond studded underwear, that is just wrong on too many levels...but to me, success is not so much about externals as it is a deep inner feeling of knowing that you are doing something with your life that can make you feel good about who you are as a person.

I've mentioned in several other reviews how there was a time in my life where I felt like an abject failure...that I was a huge dissapointment to all of life. I'd look at my world and see nothing but despair and negativity and hopelessness. I really wanted to end my life at one time. But looking back on those days, I realize that I didn't want to die as much as I wanted all those thoughts I had about my life to die.

But how do we change our thoughts? How do we go from thinking that we are failures to thinking that we're successful? We change our thoughts about ourselves by changing the thoughts we have about ourselves. I'm sorry to be so simplistic. I'm sorry I don't have some "Wa-zoo" device I could sell to you like the Nega-vac 3000 that sucks away all your negative thoughts and feelings, but the bottom line is that if you want to start thinking and feeling good about your life, then you are going to have to start thinking and feeling good.

You see, we do play a role in our own lives. We do have a say as to what we are going to think about. If you woke up feeling kind of lousy this morning, I want you to do something. I want you to go back to bed. That's it. Put the covers back over you and get up again...but this time get up thinking a positive thought about yourself...this time get up feeling as though you have something to offer life because you do; YOU!

This book is a total Godsend. It is to be devoured. It is to be assimilated. When you read it you can just feel little skyrockets of joy going off in your mind. I'm not gonna kid you, it does take work to change your thoughts and it takes even more work to keep them changed but think about this, the moment you begin to change, the WHOLE UNIVERSE will change with you. It has to! There is no set reality! All reality is, is your ideas about it, anyway.

So you could be a totally boring, mouth breathing drone or you could actually become something wonderful...something beautiful...you could be like me! And I am wonderful! I am beautiful! I am rich! I am successful! But then again, so are you. The only difference is, is that you aren't thinking it...you aren't feeling it. You are a success now. You really are. Consider this your invitation to become even more successful!

I wish you well on your journey of Light.

The wisdom of Ernest Holmes

If you have never read Ernest Holmes before, this is a great book to start with. It is simple to read, yet it conveys Ernest Holmes' wisdoms at the core, and directly.

Ernest Holmes will tell you about the concept of Divine Mind, Spiritual Supply, Mental Laws, and why our thoughts create our experience.

The first time I read his concept of "Entering The Absolute", it really opened up a new way of thinking for me. He says that to enter the absolute means, be able to think independently of any existing circumstances or problems. Meaning, if you have any problem or situation which you wish to solve or get out from, the only way to get out from it is to spend your focus mainly on what you really want - which is the solution/answer. If you are poor, you have to think thoughts of wealth, abundance and success, to dwell on the "Infinite Supply" and never on the present circumstances. Many other authors have written about true stories where people have gotten themself out of their situation of lack, by daily thinking and feeling about what they truly desire.

I recently read that the author Anthony Robbins, many years ago when he was broke, he set such big 'impossible' goals for himself such as owning a huge castle to live in, a limosine, being a multi-millionaire and being the successful person he desired to be. And he mentally rehearsed each goal everyday, as if its already achieved, that within JUST ONE YEAR he achieved all of his goals above! The castle, the limo, the wealth and life he dwelled on everyday!

For those who are interested in this topic, you may want to read "As A Man Thinketh" by James Allen. However, I still think 'Creative Mind and Sucess' is the best. If you are interested in Ernest Holmes, I recommend his other books such as "This Thing Called YOU", "Love And Law", "The Essential Ernest Holmes".

Its kind of hard to believe that this book proceeded Ernest Holmes classic text "Science of Mind", but I am glad it did and would recommend this book prior to reading Science of Mind. This is truly the secret unlocked but with a powerful spiritual foundation. Bottom line we are each God, the Universe in expression, and that truth appears in our life according to consciousness (awareness) and I will say it again and again BELIEF. For those looking for a quick fix, put this book down and go out and find something else. While results may happen rather quickly this spiritual path is for those willing to commit themselves to a better life by expanding their consciousness and putting out to LIFE. Once I embraced and realized my relatonship to the One, a great sense of peace, poise, fearlessness and confidence starting expressing through me. I thought I had these before but the foundation was largely ego based. Many of the ideas and concepts I believed as a child have been revealed to me in this book, concepts, ideas, and truths of prosperity, abundance, peace, poise, health and that I can live in this world bu not be of it. I am by far not a religious zealot or fly by night "im spiritual" type. I use these ideas to better my life and they are expressing through me here and now. I am manifesting more prosperity and abundance in all forms like never before. I pull this book out as a part of my daily study when im feeling good and when I need a pick me up. Former Oaklund A's pitcher Barry Zito sings the book praises for helping him become a a star pitcher.

Ive read all of Ernest Holmes book, but this one has to be the best for those on a new path or wanting to study and practice these principles especially when you cant make it to a local churtch or study group. Science of Mind is the ultimate text, but the language is very rich , Creative Mind was written almost 100 years ago but is still very prevalent today. YOU CANT DO WRONG WITH STARTING HERE!

The theme for this year's Daily Guideposts was traveling, both spiritually and physically. Like all Guideposts it is packed with well-written insight from writers who have earned their credentials. Some are young, some are blue-collar, others are academics and journalists, but they all have something that will leave you thinking after having read their contrbution for that day.

Each Christmas my Mother gives me Daily Guideposts which allows me to benefit from that present 365 times in the year that follows. John Sherrill reminds us of something a train ride taught him, "The slower pace shifted the emphasis from 'getting there' to 'enjoying the journey.'" His perceptive wife Elizabeth "Tib" describes how she travels both geographically and spiritually by recording notes, prayers, insights, and what she believes God is saying to her as she lists places and times such occurrences happen.

Marilyn Morgan King writes convincingly of glimpses she's had into the spiritual world. God touched me through her writing and thus answered her prayer, "Creator God, help me to remain alive to Your magnificent creation and to pass that joy to others."

There is a high value to do this devotional. Writing out your prayers helps you to remember to pray them more thru the day. Also you can go back and write when they are answered and how.

Beth Moore's insights never stop amazing me. The length is just right for a daily devotional. The book is so high quality you feel as if you have an old world treasure in your hands.

Very well written and thought provoking book with plenty of room for contemplative notes ans exercises to help one evaluate and study David. My only problem, and hence the 3 not 5 stars, is she relates and compares, way too often, David to Jesus. It is a book about David according to its title and yet she falls in the same trap as most Christian authors. Everything in the bible is NOT about Jesus nor is there any need to try and force every verse, person, etc. to fit to some explanation or elaboration of him. It is about GOD and his message via his prophets. I would love to see some of the great Christian authors, Mrs. Moore included, give the Bible its just treatment especially when dealing with the Hebrew Scriptures portion (aka OT).

This is such a personal devotional that will take you through the life of David even after all the other studies you may be doing on the Life of David. I cried as I came to the last 2 days - as I did not want it to end. This is a 'must have' - but also a perfect gift for the "woman of God" on your list this Christmas. I encourage all the women I teach in Bible study to get this devotional and go through it one-day-at-a-time for the full 90 days! So good! God will bless you!

I just bought this devotional about a month ago and am thoroughly enjoying it. The book itself is beautifully made and I think anyone would feel special receiving this as a gift.

It is a rather large book (in terms of dimensions), however the daily readings are not overwhelming at all. You read one passage of scripture and are asked two simple thought provoking questions. Beth then gives a one-to-two page devotional related to the passage and questions. It probably does not take more than 15 minutes to finish a daily devotional. But I find myself spending a bit longer just meditating on the message. I usually say to myself, "Wow, I've never seen that before," or "Thank you Lord for giving me new insight."

If you are new to Bible reading and are not familiar with the story of King David, I would recommend reading 1 and 2 Samuel before beginning this devotional because Beth just dives right in.

I highly recommed this devotional.

Such a wonderful piece, in just the right daily amount

I just finished the 90 day journey on a walk with Beth discovering things through the amazing life of David. This book took me 10 to 15 minutes a night and was a great way each evening to close out my day. You learn so much from this book and there is not the level of homework as with the Daniel study, for example, so you can do this book while doing another study and it will not stress you out!

What I love is learning all about the intricacies of David's life -- what mistakes he made, the feelings he had, what he went through as a father, husband, and leader. David was one of God's chosen -- a man truly after God's own heart -- yet he too made very human mistakes. This alone can give you great hope as a sinner and Christian.

If I could rate this book a 6, I would! I've learned so much through my nightly readings about David. This book is also attractively done with large scroll-like pages and a great layout that also just welcomes you into it. It's a book you can place out on the bookshelf after you're through and it will look very nice. You'll want to pull it out later and go through it again also. There are places to put your own thoughts so it can become a journal of sorts for this 3-month period in your life.... You won't regret these 90 days!

THE DAY I MET GOD is filled with inspiring and amazing stories of people who had an encounter with God....even the most unlikely of individuals. There's a story for everyone in this book. It will reach anyone and soften the hardest heart! If you have a friend who is need of God's healing power or truth, this is the book for them. These stories will lead them to God! I particularly was moved by the story of the young man was robbing a man who agreed to give him his money, but told the burglar that he needed to give his heart to the Lord. There's is no doubt in mind that this victim must have prayed for the man who robbed him, because he was later led to the Lord. The criminal was really haunted by the man's words until he gave his life to the Lord. I won't spoil the surprise of how he turned his life around! A great evangelical tool, this is a book that Christians can give to their non-Christian friends without fear of offending them. This book''s gentle stories speak loudly of everyone's need for God and also it shows how we are all individuals and how God meets us not just where we are but in such a special way that it validates how well he knows his children.

"Let us not look back in anger or forward in fear, but around in awareness." ~James Thurber

Gary Henry presents daily moments for reflections in "Diligently Seeking God" where we can find inspiration for any day of the year. September 30 is titled: "On Not Missing the Moment."

Here we find three paragraphs exploring a perspective on time, ideas from the apostle Paul and Jesus' perspective on the future. A verse begins each page and then the paragraphs are followed by a wise quote.

Some of the selections include enlightening information on:

Our Deepest Need, Our Greatest Reward
The Joy of Fulfilling Our Purpose
The Ultimate Paradigm
Silence and Solitude
Inner Strength, Inner Light

Gary Henry presents his thoughts along with biblical wisdom and inspirational quotes. I especially loved the quote by David Smith: "The love of God is the ultimate reality, the deepest and strongest force in the universe; and it is revealed to the man who resolutely girds himself to the conflict."

Every story seems better than the last. Just an amazing collection of brief biographies, that make you want to read more about each individual. I'm half-way through the book. I may write to the author of my own stories: My wife had a tumor the size of your thumb disappear from her neck after a prayer circle with a gifted healer. Verified with x-ray and ultrasound that is totally gone. Years before, she woke the moment a distant friend of mine, whom she had never met, passed away 350 miles away. In her dream, he shook her hand and died. I confirmed his passing the next morning. It was at the moment she had woken up.

One of Dan Millman's stories is of a skeptical doctor who went to Lourdes, and witnessed a women on the verge of death from advanced tuberculosis be cured in 30 minutes after having water from the Grotto poured over her. The doctor first describes her near death state, and then the implausible minute by minute improvements in her appearance and condition.

DIVINE INTERVENTIONS lifts the spirits as it soothes the soul... it is the perfect antidote to all manner of news media, which more often than not emphasizes things that seem to be going wrong, usually without much of an explanation as to why things happen or what makes them happen in the first place.

This refreshingly inspirational set of fifty stories, each less than seven pages long, that describe amazing events in the lives of people from all continents, spiritual traditions, and walks of life. What these stories have in common is that each of them illustrates something so extraordinary that it changed someone's life... sometimes in ways that would likely not have been predicted.

I love the way stories are told from all walks of life and all parts of the world... with a sense that there are indeed more things in heaven and Earth than most of us have dreamed. All kinds of amazing miraculous events have been occurring for thousands of years, and it's just delightful to read about some of them in one fascinating volume.

I give this book my highest recommendation to everyone interested in spirituality, miracles, and the divine.

This collection of people and their life transforming experiences is simply excellent! Each chapter, which summarizes the experience of a different individual, is just the right length (not too long, not too short, and very well written).

My favorites here are the very interesting stories of Byron Katie, Valerie Vener, and Peace Pilgrim.

Open to any page; after reading a paragraph you're hooked on the fantastic experience another has had in the out-of-the-ordinary.

Dan Millman and Doug Childers have included 50 stories in 50 short chapters about real experiences that inspire the reader to realize there is more to understand than science currently knows.

These life-changing events happened to people of all ages, including those as young as 8 year old Lucia dos Santos, one of the 3 children of Fatima, Portugal, in 1915.

This 5-star book reinforced my value on virtues, while giving me a boost of energy!

Remembering the magic in the mystery is Dan's great ability.

Of course I was honored that Dan and Doug asked me if they could tell about my near-death awakening in Copper Canyon (which is told in detail in my book, PRIMAL AWARENESS). But the honor relates, not to having my story included, but in being a part of Dan Millman's wonderful sharing of the joy that surrounds us all. Dan walks his talk and the stories he has selected reflect his deep passion for all that is magical.

If you enjoy seeing humor in the seriousness of faith, Virelle Kidder will become a welcomed new friend. But don't let the light touch of Donkeys Still Talk fool you, Kidder's humor is the vehicle for real depth and truth. Such depth can only be delivered by someone who has lived through the trials of life and has found the secret to lasting joy. I'm recommending Donkey's Still Talk to those attending my Direction: Discernment for the Decisions of Your Life retreats and day seminars as we learn how to hear from God in the midst of the noise and clamor of life lived in the trenches.

This was a terrific book. It helped me to look at the difficult situations (anything I didn't want) as a time of learning. Virelle suggests focusing on what really matters (Godly perspective) versus what I want (me, me, me).

She uses her own circumstances and experiences, some were very trying, to see what the Lord has in store for her and each of us. I found this at the public library at a time when I really needed a change in my attitude and perspective.
I highly recommend this book, especially if you are at place where you feel stuck.

Because God is so personal, he speaks to us through objects we understand. Who can't relate to a wild headstrong donkey? Virelle uses the donkey, a necessity for survival in Bible times, as a symbol for the challenges and irritations braying at our door. She teaches us how to identify our beasts of burden and how to tame them by "letting God handle the herd."

Filled with scriptural illustrations and warm personal stories, Virelle Kidder's book is a must have for your bookshelf. Read it once, but you'll keep coming back over again for encouragement and insight.

A "donkey" can be a difficult person or an unforeseen situation that comes into our lives, often without warning. Who among us hasn't had to deal with one or two of those? We may not always appreciate these distracting and unwelcomed intrusions, but according to author Virelle Kidder, we can learn from them. In fact, sometimes the very reason these "donkeys" are in our lives might be to teach us something. Virelle Kidder is a wonderful writer, and her newest book DONKEYS STILL TALK is both enjoyable and uplifting. I would recommend it to anyone dealing with a difficult situation in his or her life.

I loved Virelle Kidder's soft, friendly manner of writing to encourage me to change how I view the tough interruptions of my life. I was particularly helped with her chapter about unburdening the beast--which helped me realistically view how I tend to blame others, hold onto bitterness, take myself too seriously and lean toward other unattractive characteristics such as anger and complaint. This is an excellent book and I highly recommend it.

This is a good book for someone in alcohol recovery. I am a non-drinker and didn't like the references to "see your sponsor, etc." I recommend it for someone trying to go straight.

I don't think we as human beings actually recognize the power of daily reading, meditation, and reflecting. Practicing these powerful principles allows us to remain mindful of the moment and reflect upon the deeper question in our lives. To devote ourself to a daily meditation and to journal on these quiet times is priceless and will certainly aid in the evolution of our soul. For me this practice has allowed an awakening to take place and opens my life up to all the opportunities that are available in this universe. Please give this practice a try! This book will help you in your journey of living and cultivating an active consciousness in your daily life.
