Case-study approach brings instructive reality to this generative collection of insights into thoughtful revolution. If you cherish self-determination, enjoy political science and/or strategic studies -- savor this book. Send 1000 copies to Iraq, China, Cuba....

This books insights are needed today in America.

This is a terrific book which uses case studies to draw concrete lessons for peaceful political activity. Their application in places like Cuba and China is fairly obvious, but the lessons are needed by political activists in America as well. Election to the Congress today brings virtual life tenure; incumbents have rigged the system so that 395 of the 402 candidates running for reelection to the House in 1998 won.

Reformers need a way to revive the political system by working outside of conventional political channels, and this book offers guidelines.

The specific ideas for refining strategy can save reformers thousands of hours and dollars, and make the difference between success and failure. Very valuable.

An outstanding indictment, history and study
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2004-10-25
It isn't easy to encapsulate the enormous scope and import of this book in a short review. It is a seminal work on what its title states - a treatise on those who have always been every society's ideal victims. The work includes comprehensive chapters on the history of such abuse, explanations on how it can flourish away from public consciousness, the factors that contribute to it and threaten it, and suggestions for change. The author had many years' personal experience working in an institution for developmentally disabled adults, and is the director of the Developmental Disabilities Center at the University of Alberta, where he is also a professor of educational psychology.

Note added 5/8/06: This book is now extremely rare because it is out of print, very few copies are circulating, and very few people seem to want to get rid of their copies. Over the last 2 years, I've seen offers for it go from $100 to over $750 for a used copy. If you can afford it, it's far beyond well worth it (especially if you're an institutional buyer). This is the definitive book on abuse of people with developmental disabilities. It is incredibly thorough, researched and referenced. It is also the first comprehensive book on this topic, to my awareness - I have searched WorldCat (a catalogue of many libraries across the world) and have found nothing like it.

A Real Eye-Opener For All Us Do-Gooders!!

"Violence and Abuse in the Lives of People with Disabilities. The End of Silent Acceptance?" provides the reader with a real insight into the "helping world" of people with disabilities. The author does not just speculate on the issues of violence and abuse, he provides statistics that should make those employed in the human service industry ashamed. I would highly recommend reading this book regardless of your field or profession. I would hope that this book would inspire people to initiate and make changes in both the individual live's of people with disabilitis and the systems governing their services.

Communist Manifesto In a Comic Panel

_You Don't Have To Fuck People Over To Survive_ is a gripping collection of images, comic strips, and visual history. Both political and deeply personal at the same time, Tobocman takes a stand on Mumia Abu Jamal, Israel's military-industrial complex, relationships and the world of bosses, bastards and bohemians that populate New York City. The words aren't as important though, one of Seth's panels would be as powerful pasted up on a shattered wall in Belfast or New Delhi as it would in your hands. And he's right you know, you don't have to fuck people over to survive. Or yourself.

A heritage to treasure
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-03-28
Between the 1890s and the mid 1920s, a million people moved into the coal fields of Kentucky,Southern West Virginia, and Southwestern Virginia. Between a quarter and a third of these people, including my grandparents who went to the US Coal and Coke (US Steel)company town of Gary West Virginia, were African Americans.

Given that since the end of the coal boom in the 1920s, the depression, mechanization of the mines after WWII in a way that hit Black miners the hardest, most of these Black people and most of the whites have moved away since the 1940s. However, this is an important part of the heritage of both African Americans and working people. This book provides the history of African Americans in Eastern Kentucky in the old cold camps of Benham and Lynch near Cumberland Kentucky and the national organizations they and their descendants formed to keep their heritage alive.

There is a lot of overall discussion of the problems all miners faced finding unity against the companies fighting for a union, as well as the battles Blacks in the coal fields waged against Jim Crow in the mines and in Kentucky in general. The book also talks about the special bonds of pride that Black miners forged and how that heritage remains strong for those who have moved away and their children.

A four-volume set, The Encyclopedia of the Arab-Israeli Conflict: A Political, Social, and Military History is an in-depth scrutiny of one of the most vicious, implacable, and long-running territorial disputes in the history of the world. In the past sixty years, the proliferation of nuclear weapons and the increased scarcity of oil have dramatically amplified the global consequences of this conflict. The Encyclopedia of the Arab-Israeli Conflict provides an impartial wealth of information on this hot topic in over 750 alphabetically organized entries covering key people, places, events, and social topics. Each entry is enhanced with cross references and recommendations for further reading. Maps and photographs add a visual aid to comprehending this complicated issue. The final "documents" volume of The Encyclopedia of the Arab-Israeli Conflict is a collection of more than 150 primary sources. The result is an accessible, exhaustive and invaluable reference to a potentially critical modern issue, and carries the absolute highest recommendation for public and college libraries as well as international reference collections.

I was first exposed to this book six years ago when I was a freshman in high school. As the primary text for my History of Guam class, this book served as a significant resource. The book is full of color (in the words) and life. It is not a dry review of a people, but tells their story. Rather than just stating facts, Larry told about the culture and the people as a whole. This book truly brings back to life an ancient people.

This is a wonderful, simple book about a young girl's visit to Israel with her family. Her parents give a bit of background on each point of interest. Short and to the point, I found it a great book for children 3-6 yrs. old.
