I have been a scout master and not a very good one. I was not a high achiever in Scouting. After being called to serve as a bishop I got this book and read it. I wish I had read the book long ago. It is a great help. I recommend it especially for those who are not avid and accomplished scouters. The link between scouting and the priesthood is explained and was very welcome to me. I have purchased 4 copies for my counselors and other good leaders that are not sufficiently informed about scouting.

I have read this book several times and have bought copies as gifts for Scoutmasters, YM Presidents & Bishops. It clarifies why we use scouting and how it prepares a young men to serve successful missions. I have also loaned out my copy to friends. I think that this should be required reading for parents of Young Men and anyone else in the Ward.

Finally a GLBT book I can relate to!

Finally a GLBT book that I actually could see myself reflected in! I must have read thirty of them over the last few years. This book had people who had experiences like mine were when I was younger. I was seriously starting to think that I was the ONLY person who had my experiences which were unremarkable and astonishingly normal.

This book was AWESOME. Anyone involved in girl scouting should read it. Everyone should read it. There were some really fantastic and inspiring stories in it, and there were also some really depressing ones as well, as there will be in any book like this. If it were written and just left out the downsides and the bad cases it wouldn't be fair and true.

There were a few places in this book where I actually cried. But what really struck me most was the fact that I could see myself ten years ago IN THESE STORIES. I could actually identify with some of these women. That's never really happened before when I've read other glbt books.

I'm going to treasure this book forever. I actually managed to get an autographed copy when I bought it on amazon. For no extra cost. So very. cool.

Fantastic book!!

Entertaining Reassurance

This is a wonderful book of personal stories and entertaining anecdotal pieces such as 'All I really need to know about being a Lesbian I learned at girl scout camp.' From a personal perspective this book was a gentle re-assurance that I and my circle of lesbian girl scout friends are not alone. This book underlines a belief that I have always had, that the lesbian connection is a spiritual one foremost and a sexual one as a result. There is such a warmth, bonding, and level of oneness that you can feel with a woman, that for me has never been possible with a man, despite my own 11 year marriage. I discovered this "lesbian connection" while being a counselor at a girl scout camp and fell in love with another wife/mother much like myself. Our love bloomed quite naturally and a year later we were both divorced and living a completeness we never knew existed. It was then that it was revealed to us that there were several others like us - in our own council. They sensed what was happening with us, stood back and let the journey take it's course. This book is a gentle and sincere voice that needs to be heard all across America in GS Councils everwhere.

This book is an exceptionally well-done guide to Marine Scout-Snipers in Vietnam. Unlike others who merely repeat a story or two that they've heard, Mr. Senich examines the tactical and technical side of sniping and provides for the reader a look at both the evolution of the sniper's weapon and the revolution in his employment. His research into patents, optics, rifles and sniper employment is unparalled and far superior to the mishmash of gimmicky sniper guides you find written by snakeoil salesmen these days. If you want to know about Sniping, buy this book.

As one who attended the Marine Corps Scout Sniper School in 1966, I was pleased to find that this book was not just some "feel good" propaganda. There was the actual story, warts and all, about the rocky beginnings of the program and the evolution from PX rifles to the rifles of today.

This book is loaded with readable tecnical information about both the eqipment and the Marines pulling the trigger.

I am a huge fan of Bynum's books and this, her latest is no exception! It's fun and funny and gave me the warm fuzzies.

Willy is an adorable Guinea Pig who wants to join the Pig Scouts. All the oinkers tell him he isn't pig enough to be real Pig Scout but little Willy proves them all wrong on a Pig Scout outing.

Adults and children both will enjoy the humorous scenes of Willy trying on his Pig Scout uniform and attempting piggy activities.

A perfect picture book that is pig enough for all!

Willy wanted to be a pig scout. He was a pig after all. But not the common curly tailed wallow in the mud type. Willy was a guinea pig. None of the other real pigs thought he was pig enough to be a pig scout. They taunted and teased him endlessly. But in the end Willy shows them what he's really made of. Find out how Willy proves that his is pig enough and saves the day in the process.

Major Burnham Had the Frontier Fever in His Blood

HERE is a thrilling book. Major Burnham, probably through his own modesty, is better known in Britain than in the U.S., but his breeding on the old American frontier, from the Sioux uprising and New Ulm massacre in Minnesota in 1862 to the Tonto Basin feud and Apache War in Arizona twenty years later, no less than his dash to the Klondike in 1898 and conservation pioneer in the Western States in his later life, mark him as an American frontiersman, a prospector, conservationist, and express rider and scout of the stamp of Daniel Boone. His exploits in North America and as a soldier-of-fortune in three South African Wars, including his heroic actions as Chief of Scouts for the British Army in the Second Boer War and his mentoring of Baden-Powell that inspired the founding of the international Scouting Movement, make thrilling reading.

Riveting adventure, humbly told

Review Date: 2007-09-22
Scouting on Two Continents is the autobiography of one of the greatest scouts who ever lived, and is packed with his incredible adventures. The stories that Burnham tells are simply amazing--hiding in plain sight and yet avoiding capture, floating on a river past an enemy camp, and knifing through unknown terrain crawling with bad guys and somehow managing to get back home in one piece.

Burnham's stories are riveting, but his presentation is humble. His writing style is detailed and to the point, making his adventures all the more believable. While generally exuding the confidence that he must have felt while on most of his missions, Burnham doesn't neglect writing about his fears and failures. Through them we see the side of a man who absolutely hated returning from a mission without success, but at times knew that that was all he could do. He also presents himself as a man who was at times too brash, taking unnecessary risks to perform feats that served his ego but not his mission.

Burnham's book also provides a glimpse at the history of the Old West and of the wars in Africa around the turn of the 20th century. His insights are valuable, but racism creeps into many of his judgments about the enemies he fights.

Overall, this book reads well and is full of fantastic adventures, but it will only be appreciated by the reader who takes the time to carefully read and understand the man and the societies in which he lived and fought. It is not riveting like a modern thriller, but rather because its stories are true, personal, and well-told.

Hesketh Pritchard was one of the greatest ever snipers

Review Date: 1997-10-29
In the 1990s people have no reason to know much about war. Sniping is the very essence of war - one man deliberately killing another, in cold blood. Hesketh Prichard was a British soldier in the Great War (WW1) who was largely responsible for the much needed renaissance of sniping in the British Army. This book is about how he established the sniper school and raised the standard of sniping in Flanders. It also offers insights into the beurocratic mentality that would rather see less change and more casualties in an army than more change and fewer casualties. Not, perhaps, a phenomenon restricted to that army or that time - ask anyone who survived the fall of Singapore, the Vietnam war, or the Atlantic before the convoy system was reintroduced. Further, it offers insight into the peculiar mentality required of a sniper. Any infantry officer should read this book, as should any feminist who feels that as a matter of principle women should serve in all combat arms. It may help the former avoid costly mistakes; it might open the eyes of the latter to the grim realities of war, and show why, perhaps. potential mothers should not be in the front line.

A seminal book, of continuing relevance in the 1990s

Despite some imperfections of style and editing, which may be accounted for by the fact that the author was more concerned about doing a job effectively rather than with the finer points of authorship and literary presentation - this is a key work on the emergence of sniping among the British and their allies in the first world war, in response to highly effective German sniper units, and on the contribution that was made by men (enlisted and officers) who had a background in hunting and rifle shooting for precision accuracy. As a historical record it is essential, along with McBride's "A Rifleman Went to War". It may also be seen in context if read alongside Capt. Clifford Shore's "With British Snipers to the Reich", which continues the history of sniping through the second world war, and shows its second resurgence in this century. A book of great importance and practical value to military historians, modern soldiers, target shooters and those who hunt wild game animals.

The best book available on evaluating minor-leaguers!

Review Date: 1999-01-21
If you are in a "keeper" rotisserie baseball league that allows for the drafting of prospects, then this book is a must. I buy it every year, and believe me, it always pays for itself when I finish near the top of my league, in part due to players that I drafted when they were just reaching AA ball. An example: By now many people have heard of this year's favorite for AL rookie of the year, 3b Eric Chavez of Oakland. But how many people knew who he was before last season? Well, if you read this book, then you knew he was an excellent prospect, younger then most of his peers, with the potential to be a star. I drafted him in my league's reserve draft, and I expect I will be reaping the benefits for the next three or four years. It was the same with Ben Grieve the year before. The other great thing about this book is you will probably learn some things about evaluating minor-leaguers that you didn't know before, such as the importance of strike-zone judgement for young hitters(reflected in K/BB ratio). After reading this book, you will be better equipped to make your own judgements about prospects during the middle of the season, which will come in handy when making trade decisions. So trust me, when the '99 version of this book comes out, buy it. You'll be glad you did.

Stirring, highly recommended historical action-adventure.

Author, journalist, and editor Stuart Murray has written a superbly crafted historical novel capturing the yesteryear feel of 1828 in southern Africa. Dirk Arendt is guiding an archaeological expedition toward a lost city near Zululand. One of the part is an agent for a ruthless secret brotherhood in search of an ancient amulet, thought to be in the hands of Shaka, founder and lord of the newly unified Zulu nation. Dirk's expedition arrives just as rebels are about to overthrow Shaka, and the rebels also desire to posses the Amulet of White Fire. Meanwhile to the southwest, the first Cape Colony Dutch pioneers have launched a journey northward into the wilderness in search of the Promised Land. These independent minded Boers include Dirk's own parents and Rachel Drente. These "voortrekkers" are marching straight into the turmoil and civil war between Zulu regiments and the conspirators who are seeking to overthrow Shaka and seize the amulet. White Fire is a stirring, very highly recommended, action-adventure oriented historical novel which is enhanced for the readers pleasure with a meticulous attention to accurate detail throughout.

I read this book for the first time over 20 years ago. Loved it then, still do. Will Henry/Clay Fisher brings these people from the past alive. They become living breathing sympathetc characters in this book and all his others.

Bravery, cowardice, pathos it's all here. One of my prized posessions is a picture of me by Luther S. " Yellowstone " Kelly's grave above Billings, Montana.

Will Henry/Clay Fisher is far better, than the more popular Louis L'Amour, at evoking a real sense of place, time and history.

"The Little Man With The Strong Heart"

Prior to entering the military in the late 1950s I saw a movie entitled "Yellowstone Kelly." I thought it very good, especially with ole Clint 'Cheyenne' Walker in the lead role. A Warner Brothers extravaganza of the Sioux Wars with John Russell playing the Hunkpapa war leader, Gall.

Later as I began to read westerns I learned that Luther Sage "Yellowstone" Kelly was a real person, and that he actually did accomplish stupendous things out west. So much so that the Sioux not only feared him, but gave him the name "The Little Man With The Strong Heart." In this novel from Clay Fisher/Will Henry he is also known as "Man Who Never Lays Down His Gun."

He did all this while serving as an Army scout for General George Crook in Crook's far-flung Department of the Platte. Some of his fellow scouts were said to have commented that Kelly could smell an Indian in the dark, better than they could see one in the light of day. In his days of Army service he very much helped write the history of the Yellowstone Valley.

This novel based on events from Luther Sage Kelly's life by Clay Fisher was published in hardcover in 1957. In and out-of-print since then, it has more recently been reprinted using Will Henry as author. They were both one and the same author. No matter how they print it or to whom they give credit as author, this is one wonderful saga from the mists of those far gone times.

Do yourself a favor, and spend a couple nights reading this. Your time spent with Luther Sage Kelly, or Yellowstone Kelly will not wasted.

Semper Fi.
